Disclaimer: I do NOT own Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, Boruto: Naruto Next Generation or any of its characters. The Naruto franchise belongs to its respective owners. I only own my OC and the idea for this one shot.
Author's Note: This story was inspired by Eminim's song Need Me (ft. P!nk) and it's not a songfic. I only kept a few key lines from the song to help with the inspiration. Also while I was writing one part of this story I was listening to one of Mr. Buddy's videos on YouTube. Oh don't forget that I'm not very good when it comes to describing OCs. Anyway enjoy the story.
Aki was currently walking home after she got work with music softly playing from her earbuds; she was currently wearing black jeans, a white v-neck shirt, and a long black rain coat with the hood up. She was slightly taller than average height for a woman, had a muscular build, and her hair was cut short and was slightly spiked. The music was just loud enough to keep the silence away, but not too loud so the blonde could still hear her surroundings. As she was walking Aki began to think of her life over the past few months. Two months ago the woman she was in love with moved into her apartment, the only reason Konan was now living with Aki was because Konan's fiancé, Yahiko, died in a shooting. The muscular woman knew Yahiko since he was the reason Konan was happy and that was all that mattered to Aki.
Konan had not wanted to live in the apartment she had shared with Yahiko anymore since she wanted to get away from the majority of the memories. So the day Konan arrived at Aki's apartment the blonde allowed Konan into her home. During the two months Aki had not once charged Konan any kind of rent or had asked the blue haired woman for any help with the bills. Even if Konan had offered to help buy some groceries the blonde haired woman wouldn't had let Konan help.
Realizing where she was Aki walked up to the entrance of the apartment building. The building was painted a dull grey color and was actually a rather tall building, not quite as tall as the other buildings around it, but it was still fifteen stories high. Walking over to the stairs that were outside Aki began her ascent to the top. Once Aki arrived at her apartment door, which was the last apartment on the top floor, the blonde grabbed her keys out of the pocket of her jeans and unlocked the door. Opening the door the blonde looked at the living room and saw a few bottles of beer on the coffee table. Looking on the couch Aki saw her best friend sound asleep. Sighing slightly Aki closed the door softly before she bent down and took her shoes off. Shrugging her rain coat off Aki hung it up in the small closet in the entrance of the apartment before she walked over to the living room, "I can't stay mad at Konan."
Placing her house keys in the pocket of her leather jacket Aki walked over to the coffee table and picked up the bottles, "I know Konan is hurting over the loss of Yahiko, but I wish she wouldn't drink as much." Looking at the sleeping woman on the couch Aki's face held the look of sadness, but it didn't last long as a smile soon appeared on the blonde's face, "She can always make me smile." Aki then walked over to the kitchen and placed the bottles in the recycling bin, "I'll let Konan wake up on her own before I move her to her bedroom." Walking over to the stove Aki began to cook herself something to eat.
A few hours later Aki was washing the dishes when she heard the leather from the couch squeak. Looking over her shoulder Aki saw that Konan had awoken; smiling the blonde watched as Konan fully sat up on the couch, "I was expecting you to sleep a bit longer."
Placing her right hand on her forehead Konan looked at the coffee table, "What time is it? And when did you get home?"
Rinsing off the final plate Aki grabbed the towel and dried her hands before she walked over to the living room. Sitting down in the chair Aki looked at Konan, "It's eleven at night and I got home a few hours ago."
Konan leaned back on the couch as she closed her eyes, "My head really hurts."
"Do you want me to take you to your room?" Aki inquired.
"Sure...also I'm sorry for drinking more of your beer." Konan stated.
Walking over to the couch Aki helped Konan stand up, "It doesn't bother me that you drunk the beer. I just wish you didn't drink so much." She then began to lead them to Konan's room.
Leaning against Aki's body the blue haired woman tried not to fall back asleep, "I don't know if I can."
"I'll help you, Konan. I want to help you overcome your depression." Aki stated boldly.
"Why would you want to help me?" Konan asked as her words slightly slurred.
"Because I love you, Konan." Aki then opened the door to Konan's room, "Because you're my best friend, Konan. I don't want to see you like this every time I come home."
"You wouldn't understand since you've never lost someone you loved." Konan slurred.
Helping Konan lie down Aki began to walk away, "I let the person I love go so they could be happy. I'll never love anyone else either." Aki then walked out of Konan's room, closing the door behind her Aki walked to her own room.
*The Next Day*
Aki was currently in the kitchen as she was cooking breakfast, she also had some coffee made for Konan. The blue nail polish was beginning to chip off and despite knowing this Aki knew she had all day to repaint them since she had the day off. She was currently wearing black shorts that stopped just above her knee and a black tank top. Hearing the wooden chair slide across the wooden floor the blonde looked over at the table to see Konan, "I've got some coffee made for you."
"Is what you said last night true?" Konan inquired.
Finishing up breakfast Aki carried the two bowls of rice and eggs over to the table and sat them down, "Is what true?" She then walked back over to the kitchen to grab the coffee.
Averting her gaze Konan looked at the table, "About letting the person you loved go."
Carrying the coffee and a cup over to the table Aki sat down, "Yes, that's true. I honestly didn't think you would remember that."
Grabbing the coffee pot the blue haired woman poured herself a cup of coffee, "Who was it?" Konan inquired as she now looked at Aki.
Sighing Aki ran her hand through her hair, "I don't like to think about the person because I still love them."
Despite being hung over Konan could tell it was a touchy subject for Aki, "Very well, you can tell me more if you're ever ready."
Aki nodded, "I'll keep that in mind." She then looked at Konan and smiled genuinely, "Do you remember me saying that I was going to help you stop drinking?"
"I think so." After taking a sip of her coffee Konan looked at the cup, "I hate having a hangover. Plus it's not fair that I'm staying here for free." Konan was unaware that she was smiling slightly, "I know you told me that you didn't mind me staying here free of charge, but I want to help with the rent and stuff for the apartment."
"I've missed her smile." Aki was still looking at Konan, "Do you want me to see if there is a job opening where I work?"
Konan shook her head slightly before she looked at Aki, "Nagato said that I could come back to work once I was ready."
"I almost forgot about that." Aki then looked out the window, "So what shall we do today?"
After my hangover is gone we could watch a movie and I'll repaint your nails for you." Konan suggested.
Looking at her nails Aki chuckled slightly, "I didn't even notice that the polish was chipping."
Konan laughed slightly, "You've always been that way." She then realized that they were blue, "I thought you use to paint your nails black."
Aki looked back at Konan, "I was a teenage then. I can't wear black nail polish every day. Besides I really think the blue suits me."
"To be honest I never thought the black nail polished looked good on you." Konan admitted as she finished her coffee.
Standing up Aki grabbed the dishes and carried them over to the sink, "I was going through a phase back then. I would have dyed my hair, but I never had the money to do so."
Konan stood up and walked over to the couch, "I don't think any other hair color would have suited you anyway." She then sat down on the middle cushion.
Walking over to the couch the blonde sat down on Konan's right and got comfortable on the couch, "When do you want to watch a movie?"
Bringing her legs up onto the couch Konan leaned her body up against Aki, "In a couple hours, for now I want to see if a nap won't help my hangover." She then closed her eyes and fell asleep.
Carefully moving her right arm Aki grabbed the throw blanket off the back of the couch and covered Konan up. Watching the woman she loved sleep right next to her caused a smile to grace Aki's face for the second time that day, "Leave it to Konan to be my reason to smile. She may never love me in return, but I accepted that years ago. As long as she's in my life and is happy, then that's all I need to be happy. Even if she's never as happy as she was with Yahiko, as long as she's not depressed anymore, then I won't ever have to regret my decision." Aki then looked at what was left of the blue nail polish on her right hand, "You're the reason I paint my nails blue, Konan. The color reminds me of you and I feel closer to you."
