Chapter 33:With highways making up the verse
A few days after moving into the pad,Stephanie was slowly beginning to get settled in after finally coming to terms that the pad was officially her new home. After turning the once unknown third bedroom into something that she was able to consider to be all hers,Stephanie had no idea that her world was once again going to change by having to start a new school which Mike was very adamant to get done as soon as possible.
It was on an early Tuesday morning when Stephanie was sitting down at the kitchen table having breakfast with Mike,Micky and Peter who decided to spend their morning talking about Davy who still wasn't home from the date he had gone on the night before. Unable to understand why they would talk about their friend that way,Stephanie kept her head down and her mouth shut even as the front door opened and in walked a very exhausted looking Davy.
"Well, well the prodigal son finally returns." Micky said as a smirk grew upon his face
"Not now Micky,I'm too tired." Davy said with a yawn
"Another late night Davy?" asked Peter
"Uh huh." Davy yawned once again "And I've got another date tonight."
"Davy man,why not hold off on going out tonight?" Mike suggested
"I can't all because of the bet I made with him" Davy said as he pointed at Micky "Now if you'll excuse me,I'm going to get some sleep before tonight."
Watching silently as Davy walked into his and Peter's bedroom,Stephanie finally looked up from her cereal bowl and decided that now was the perfect time to open her mouth about how the others were treating poor Davy.
"Y'all should be ashamed of yourselves." said Stephanie
"What are you talking about Steph?" asked Micky
"I'm talking about the way you're treating Davy." Stephanie sighed "Now I know I ain't been here for long, but from what I've seen so far I don't like it one bit."
"I think she's right fellas." Peter sighed "We haven't exactly been nice or sympathetic to him, especially you Micky."
"Me?" Micky said in shock "Now hang on a minute, the whole bet thing was Mike's idea so wouldn't that make him just as guilty?"
"Mike? you started this?" asked Stephanie
"Well... yes and no." Mike said as he adjusted the collar of his shirt "Mostly yes."
"I thought y'all were supposed to be friends." Stephanie said as she got up from the table
"We are friends Steph." said Peter "And she's right we should try being nicer to Davy."
With the four of them sitting silently for a few minutes,Mike looked down at his watch and then told his sister to get herself ready to go. Wondering where she was going so early in the morning, Stephanie knew better than to question any member of her family, which was a lesson she learned the hard way the one time she had dared to question her Aunt Kate's authority.
Leaving the house with her brother and climbing into the car,Stephanie sat in silence as they pulled out of the driveway and were finally on their way. As much as she wanted to ask what was going on,Stephanie soon got the answer to her question the minute Mike had pulled up in front of the local highschool. Sighing as she got out of the car,Stephanie slowly followed her brother in the building and down the hall to the principals office.
Sitting down on the bench outside the office,Stephanie waited as Mike talked to the principal about enrolling her into the school for the new semester. Beginning to grow bored,Stephanie got up from the bench and decided to explore the school, and ended up meeting two of the girls who already went there.
"Hey kid,are ya lost or somethin?"
"Casey! that's no way to talk to the poor thing."
"Oh Amy,lighten up would ya." Casey said as she rolled her eyes "You got a name kid?"
"Nesmith. Stephanie Nesmith." Stephanie sighed
"Nice ta meet ya Nez." Casey said as she shook her hand
"So,Stephanie are you going to be coming here next semester?" asked Amy
"My brother is handling that part right now." said Stephanie "What are y'all doing here? Ain't it summer time?"
"Summer school." Amy sighed dejectedly as she glared at her friend
"Its not my fault!" Casey said defensively
"Sure it isn't ." Amy sighed
"If y'all don't mind my asking, what exactly happened?" asked Stephanie
"Its a loooonnnnngggg story." said Casey
'Oh."said Stephanie "Well,I better get back to the principals office incase my brother is looking for me."
"It was nice meeting you Stephanie." said Amy
"Yeah, see ya around Nez.!" Casey shouted as Stephanie was walking away
Arriving back at the principals office just in time,Stephanie saw both Mike and the principal walk out of the office together as they shook each other's hand once they were in the hallway. Giving her brother a fake smile,Stephanie felt relieved once they left to go back home.
Listening as her brother went over what to expect once she started school,Stephanie couldn't help but wonder about those two girls she met today who seemed a bit odd to her but, then again so did living in a whole new place with her brother and his three friends who she still barely new but trusted since Mike himself trusted them...well most of the time anyway.
