He used his form of it often, during the day, he helped with the ranch after sleeping in and helping around the village. At night, he changed into his wolf form to keep monsters away and watch the village. Will his secret be found out by the villagers?
Chapter 1
The summer breeze settled in Ordon, the kids played outside, birds sang and the people worked on crops and cooled down in the shallow ends of the pond or underneath the trees. A swordsman swung his sword next to the stream leading to the pond, his wife sitting nearby with their baby, the baby was their second child, a baby girl. The baby's name was Mya, being held by her mother, Uli. A small blond child ran after some butterflies and almost tripped on his mother's hand, though he did not hit her hand, he tripped into the soil with a slip. Uli looked at her son with a soft sigh.
"Colin, be careful." She said to the boy, but he lifted his face and spat out some mud and looked to his mother, grinning sheepishly.
"I'm fine!" Colin squeaked in a childish way as his baby sister giggled at her big brother, gurgling and blowing bubbles. "See? Even Mya finds it funny."
"I never said I didn't find it funny." Uli commented with an amused grin on her face. "Why don't you go play with the other kids, or find Link to get him to teach you to ride a horse?"
Colin lit up after she said Link's name. Link was his hero, and he felt like he was a big brother to him. "I'll go find Link!" He exclaimed and scrambled to his feet. Running towards the entrance to the village.
"Colin! Also make sure to invite him to dinner tonight, it's Mya's birthday tomorrow and he has to work tomorrow!" She called after him then shook her head softly, wiping the baby's drool away from her face. Rusl looked at his wife after striking the sword into the ground and panting. "Don't overwork yourself." She said to her husband as he waved his hand.
"I'm fine. I'm just worried about that boy." Rusl responded, standing up straight from his slightly slouched frame. "He hasn't been running around here as often and sleeping in more than he used to do."
"I thought you were talking about Colin for a second. Link's fine, I'm sure of it. Remember, he did save Hyrule, so he must be catching up on sleep when he couldn't." Uli pointed out before tending to the small child, making the child more comfortable in her arms as Mya fell asleep with soft snores.
Colin ran through the entrance of Ordon to make it to Link's house, only to find him not even outside. That's strange. He's usually awake at this time. He's been sleeping in often ever since he came back home two weeks ago. I wonder what's up with him. Colin silently thought to himself as he took a deep breath in to over has it slapped out of him as the man himself opened the door, walking out with a yawn and stretch. Colin watched him as Link blinked his eyes awake after shutting them tightly from the piercing sunlight. He let his arms sway to his side and looked down to see the little blonde boy standing there and watching him carefully. The teenager waved his hand slightly which diverted the child's staring and made him smile.
"Your up!" Colin smiled as the boy climbed down the ladder, when his feet hit the floor, Colin hugged the teen.
"You make it sound as if I was ill, Colin. Did I worry you for some reason?" Link said, softly patting the kid on the head. Colin looked at him and shook his head.
"Everyone was getting worried over you sleeping in late. It's strange that you are sleeping in so late, does working on the farm make you really tired?" Colin's expression changed from excitement to worry.
"No, no. It was from my adventures, I hadn't been able to get much of a blink of sleep in so long. Though I still made time otherwise I don't think I would even be alive right now." Link bit back grumble towards himself. He realized people are starting to notice things from him. The last thing he needed was an entire village worrying for him. "I'm alright. Now, why did you come over?"
Colin let go of him and slightly bounced, "Mama said you should come over for dinner tonight because of your ranch work tomorrow. Tomorrow's Mya's birthday so she wants to make sure you can celebrate it with us before you get in the rest for work."
Link looked at him with soft eyes, "Let me make a decision, okay? Besides, I know its not your only motivation to come see me. What else?" He asked, giving a confused look.
"Oh yeah! You promised to teach me to ride horses!" Colin grabbed his arm and tugged it softly to only have Link recoil with a wince. Colin tilted his head.
"That's right. I did promise that a while ago. How did I forget?" He said, grabbing his arm Colin tugged and pulled it behind himself. "We can do that. Let me grab Epona from the spring and I'll meet you here in a few minutes. While I do that, go tell your parents I'll be there tonight for the dinner. If I'm late then just start without me." Link said as he started to walk over towards the way of the Spring. Colin gave a quick nod and ran off back towards the village.
Link sighed softly before sprinting off towards the Spring. He slid his hand along the smooth walls of the gate. He walked into the Spring after a bit of a sprint. He made a nicker type of noise to catch the brown and white horse's attention. Epona lifted her head from drinking the water and neighed at her owner before walking over to him slowly. "How are ya, girl? Feeling better from the adventure yet?" The horse nuzzled Link as he was petting her nose. He chuckled softly and smiled at her. Then soon enough, a frown followed. "People are starting to get suspicious, I don't want a fuss over me. Think I should tell them the truth..? Do you think they'll accept me?" He asked the horse as she whinnied at him, making him give her a small smile.
"I'm afraid that they'll not want me around anymore if I say anything." He said, sitting on a rock nearby as Epona followed and nudged him gently, as to reassure him. "Thanks, Epona. Even if I'm not in the right form to understand the animal language, but you seem reassuring. Also, don't forget about the work we have to do tomorrow." He said, patting her neck gently. Wincing slightly with the arm he used. It was the same arm Colin grabbed, he didn't pull very hard but he had a wound that was still trying to heal there.
During the night, he was attacked, so he had winced when Colin touched it. He had to hide it behind his back as if nothing was wrong and he was playing around. Link took off his shirt to reveal several scars and some wounds that still have not finished healing from last night's patrol around the area. He was touching it gently as he got up and sat in the spring, cupping some of the healing water the Spring withheld. He smeared the water on his arm and other wounds. The water soothed his pain into a dull pain. Link leaned back and let the water lap at his sides and cheeks. Staring at the sky as Epona walked towards a grassy part near the sand to graze. Link closed his eyes slowly, the silence and soft waters lulling him to sleep...
"What? Say something! Am I so beautiful that you've no words left?"
Thought to be dead, Midna rises again but in a different look, her true form. Link stood there in awe, his eyes wide and shocked. Zelda came running up after him to see Midna as well. Her eyes widened then turned to a soft look, smiling to her friend. "It broke the curse on you. That's great!" Zelda exclaimed, reaching out to hug her friend. Midna accepted the hug as Link fell to his knees.
Hot tears seemed in his eyes and began to crawl down his face. He wiped his tears away as the girls finished their hug to turn to the hero. "Aw, don't cry Link. See, I'm fine." Midna smiled as she walked towards him to help him up from the ground. He smiled softly and accepted her hand, allowing her to pull him up and right into a hug. She was much taller than he imagined, then again it had made sense. A tiny imp to a possibly average sized Twili. Though, he did not care of her size, he only tightly hugged her back. He trembled in her arms.
"I-I thought you were dead.. I... I was so scared... Midna.." He gasped for breath, tears still leaking out of his eyes. Midna shush him softly, reassuring the poor hero.
He sniffled and pulled out of the hug slowly, wiping the rest of the tears as a big smile crossed his face. "I'm sorry that I just cried all over you."
"It's alright, you hylians are so emotional." She teased, winking as Zelda giggled behind her. Link's face went into a bright red that made him look away.
"No, I'm not..." He mumbled, his eyes looking in a different direction. He huffed softly, and shook his red face until he managed to make it go away.
"Though sadly," Midna started with a sad sigh, "We must make way to the Mirror Chamber, my realm needs its princess to help rebuild our city. I'm sorry I cannot wait for a day or so." She looked away and grabbed her arm softly. Link looked at her with a sad look in his eyes, then soon enough, he looked in the direction of the desert. His head lowered to face the ground. Zelda watched the young hero's actions then faced Midna.
"We understand, but how are we going to get there? It's almost a half week journey there on foot." Zelda questioned with a confusion as Midna looked at her with a small laugh.
"Who said we are walking?" Midna said, lifting her hand, snapping it as the other two went engulfed in black and turned into black square particles, with Midna following right behind them.
Later on, they were warped to the mirror chambers. Midna walked forwards to the mirror, stroking it gently with a hand, a sorrowed look crossing onto her face. Link looked at the twilight princess, the hero sadly sighing, "I'm sad you have to go so soon, right after just returning Hyrule and yourself to normal.." He mumbled quietly, even though it was loud enough to be heard.
Zelda watched the hero and other princess, "We are not ready for you to leave, but we completely understand. Duties of your people must always come first." She spoke as Link looked at the Hyrule princess and then back at Midna with a short nod.
"Well, before I leave, I actually have some wishes or just as gifts to you two." Midna looked back at them with a sad smile as the two hylians walked forward to her. They stepped up the steps and looked up. Link lifted his head in realization and scrounged around in his satchel. Grabbing out a blue necklace of the sort, glimmering with sapphire gemstones.
"I actually have a gift to you as well." He said, giving a small smile. "I was working on it when you had slept on our adventure, I made it myself and wanted to give it to you, but never knew how. I hope you enjoy it." The hero lifted it to Midna's held out hand, gently placing it in hers.
Midna picked it up after being given it, then putting it on and giving Link a small kiss on the cheek. "Thank you, Link." She spoke with a soft smile, Link held his cheek with a soft blush.
"Y-Yeah. Your welcome." He softly said as Zelda watched the two and giggled.
"Now, what is the wish you want to grant us? It's nearing sunrise and your people are awaiting as are mine." Zelda spoke up, rising a hand.
Midna looked at the hylian princess and nodded, "I give you a wish of a safe rule, where Hyrule will be peaceful as long as it can hold, and as well to a long rule, to you Zelda." She bowed properly, then turned to Link. She made the cursed gemstone appear before him, "I give you the gift of the curse you had, making it to where this gemstone is no longer needed and more of a blessing instead to allow you to turn into a wolf at will, also along with a safe life. Live long, until you are old. That it my wish to you." She said with a tear trying to pierce through her soft gaze, her yellow to red eyes giving a warm effect to them.
Link watched the stone break and the magic heading his way into him. He felt it blaze into his veins and finally felt it gone, but he knew it was there. His beast form hibernating until he calls upon it. He looked at Midna as she headed to the mirrors steps to the twilight realm.
Words exchanged and lead to the final words, Midna started to cry and Link looked at her with deeply saddened eyes.
"Link... I... See you later.." She cried softly as a tear drifted down and she pushed it way to the glass, she started to teleport away and the tear drifted to the glass and shattered it. She disappeared into the twilight realm as the mirror completely broke. Along with the mirror, his heart broke on the inside, seeing her so sad, and leaving him. Someone he had loved ever since he grew attached.. Had disappeared into another realm and broken the only way of seeing each other ever again.
That was when he was awoken by someone leaning over him. Seeing the darkness spread into his closed eyes instead of the usual sunlight. The former hero started to slightly open his eyes to see a face in front of his. Someone leaning down in his face, that gave him a startling sight.
"Thought you were dead, since you were laying so still in the water. How'd ya fall asleep in the water?" It was Rusl, leaning down to boy he raised as if he were his own. Link was there since he was basically born, his mother carried him to the remote village as his father was fighting in the war of monsters, though he died in that battle and his other was heavily wounded to the point where she died to infected and poisoned wounds. He was given to their closest friends of the village. Grown up and raised by Uli and Rusl.
"R-Rusl!" Link started as he choked with some water in his throat. He heaved to his side that wasn't injured as bad and coughed.
"Woah, sorry to startle ya, son." Rusl chuckled softly with a face of concern, "You alright?" He asked, gently patting the boy's back. Link nodded in response.
"I must've moved to where the w-water went into my mouth. So, what's up?" The former hero asked, coughing a little but sat up. Epona walked to his side and nudged his face with her soft nose. "Sorry if I worried the both of ya." Link said, chuckling and rubbing the back of his head, brushing his fingers through his hair.
"Well, for starters, I was coming out to look for ya, it's getting dark and Colin said you haven't returned to teach him about riding a horse. So, I thought you were either chilling out at the Spring or fighting some monsters." Rusl bent down on his knees next to Link.
Link gasped in realization. "Dammit, I forgot. I'll make it up to him." He sighed softly, gripping some of his hair out of anxiety. Epona nudged him again to make him stop doing so, he hugged his horse and slowly stood up, becoming a little wobbly. Rusl quickly noticed his legs slightly shaking and grabbed an arm to help him up. Due to the Spring keeping down his pain, it didn't hurt when Rusl touched his sensitive arm. He let go of the boy when he got his balance.
"Are you sure you are alright?" He asked Link, the former hero nodded right back at him.
"Yeah, I'm just a bit tired-" He said, though right after he said those words, his stomach growled. He realized he hasn't eaten a single thing today.
"Haha. Come on, its dinner time anyways. Let's go eat before you starve." Rusl laughed, patting Link on the back. The two of them left the Spring and Link felt the pain return to his wounds that were almost finished healing. His soreness crept into his arm and he shrugged a little with a shiver. Rusl looked back at the boy, tilting his head, "cold?"
Link nodded slowly while walking towards him and Epona followed closely behind. Besides, that's not the only reason... He thought to himself as he watched Rusl take the lead and grabbing his horse's reins for him.
"I'll hold onto Epona, don't forget your shirt." Rusl snickered softly as Link looked at himself and blinked, hanging his head low and walking back to the rocks to where he left his shirt at with embarrassment.
After they made it back from the Spring, they walked to Rusl's home, letting go of Epona's reins so she can graze in the soft grass and to rest. She had a tense feeling on her, he knew it was probably worry for her owner. He saw the scars and bandages on Link's body when he came to the Spring, so he must've either had wounds that were really serious and hasn't healed completely yet or just gotten into a fight with some monsters.
Walking right inside, Colin was sitting at the table, holding his bread in one hand as Uli was feeding Mya, then turned her attention to her husband and the former hero. She greeted them with a silly grin. "You men took your time." She spoke then Colin turned his head to see them and gulped down some bread and rushed out of his seat to greet them.
"There you are! Where were you? Are you okay?" Colin asked with a concerned look on his face. Link blinked at the small child, then released a guilty sigh.
"I'm so sorry for worrying you and missing on the promise I made to teach you to ride a horse today." Link looked away, softly grasping his sore arm. Colin noticed it earlier and he noticed it now, seeing the pain in Link's eyes then he looked away himself then lifted up the rest of his bread to him. It was a bit left, still more left on the table but he wanted to show that he forgives him. Link looked at the small boy and gave a soft smile, taking the bread and taking a bite. "Thanks.."
Rusl shuddered at the tension then huffed. "Time to eat. We're almost done eating but feel free to stay and eat." He said, patting Link on the back. Link tensed and winced, backing up a little. Rusl looked at the boy, Colin and Uli did too, watching him back away after that wince.
"You alright dear? Does your back hurt?" Uli asked Link with a concerned look on her face, standing up slowly. Link nodded to being alright but shook his head to being hurt. He turned around and opened the door.
"I-I think I'll just go home. I'm just really tired." He said. Shuddering and crossing his arms in a distant way. Rusl looked at the former hero and thought for a moment.
"Before you go, take some food with you. I haven't seen the smoke from the furnace to your house light for a few nights. You need to make sure to eat, and keep well rested. I can see your sore, don't try to hide it." Rusl said, grabbing Link's shoulder with a soft hand. Link looked back at him, thinking for a moment then nodded. His body shook with soreness and exhaustion. Rusl turned to Uli as she grabbed a cloth from a drawer, wrapping some bread and other food in it, then handed it to Rusl. Rusl turned to Link as Link turned all the way to grab it, his eye lids slightly closing on him. "Son, you look like your going to faint. Are you sure you are alright? You can stay here if you want."
"No, no. I'll be fine. I'm fine." He mumbled and slightly bowed in appreciation and walked out the door to grab Epona's reins. "C'mon girl. Let's go h-home." He said, shuddering a bit more before his legs gave away. Rusl was about to shut the door before he saw Link's legs buckle and fall to the ground, the food dropping to his side and Link collapsed.
