Omg I am so sorry! It has been forever since I wrote anything here! Damn it has been to long! But I have been busy with school, studying to the Cambridge exam and writing my book. Yet I am so sorry!
I hope that I will be able to write more often now, I won't promise anything but I hope!
Anyway, let's see. Rahl, Jagang, Nicci, Richard, Kahlan, D'hara and all that are from Sword of Truth! An amazing series, if you haven't read it, do! And I changed some small things so it works for the story, and I also avoided telling the whole story because it would take forever, and if someone decides to read the books, I don't want to spoil it.
Sigyn are Loki's wife in the Mythology, and the twins are Váli and Nafir, they won't be in the story, but I may mention them and the other children again.
Angrboda are another of Loki's partner and the mother to Hel, Fenri and Jörmungard. They won't be in this story either.
Warmweed are from Rangers Apprentice.
Modafinil is a real thing, and what ever drugs you think she is doing, you decide.
Thor was just a small part of it, but I just wanted to set it up for the future, not doing much with it now.
I thinks' thats all. At least everything important.
And as always thank you for reading, reviewing and everything, enjoy!
He woke up when he heard someone moving around and mumbling, a bit disorientated for a second or two he searched the room for an intruder before he understood that the sound came from Cara.
It was obvious that she had a nightmare and for a second he wished to know what it was about. From what Loki had observed, nothing seemed to frighten her, at least not to the extent of fear she seemed to be in now. He didn't took his eyes of her as he thought about his options.
He thought of leaving her be, being possibly that the dream would come to an end and she would either wake herself or continue sleeping, but after a few minutes without such a thing occurring, he thought of waking her. He hoped she would not mind, but from the state she was in, he felt it was better to wake her anger than seeing her in such pain.
He was once again surprised by his own compassion for her, she was barely more than a stranger, yet he did not wish to see her suffer and be in pain. If it had been anyone else, he would have left them be without a second thought, he shook his head, feeling that it was too early for such thoughts. Besides, he had tried to find a reason for it the past couple of days without result so he doubted he would now.
He stopped by his bed, looking down at the blonde woman as she was tossing and turning and he was unsure of how to wake her. He tried by uttering her name but it was without result, not even when he spoke a bit higher than normal and he guessed he had no choice but touching her. Yet it felt wrong, Cara seemed reluctant to touch, he was unsure of why, and it made him wish to touch her even less, nonetheless it seemed like his only option.
As soon as Loki's hand reached her shoulder, her eyes opened and she grabbed him faster than he could react, throwing him on the other side of the bed, and she pinned him down by sitting over him, and he soon had a knife pressed to his throat. He forgot to breath for a second, feeling fear for a short moment, something ridicules seeing that the woman would be unable to kill him.
Yet her behaviour had surprised him, and furthermore the coldness he saw in her now red eyes, it was unlike anything he had ever seen. It was as he stared into death, which was ridicules because he knew Hel, and his little girl's eyes were warm and lively, this was something else.
Loki wondered if he dared to speak or what that may do, at the moment it seemed as Cara waited for him to do something, and he could with ease, she was strong and it was clear that she knew how to hold someone. If he had been a mortal he doubted that he would be able to break free without dying, here he could easily do it, but he didn't want to, knowing it would hurt Cara. Instead he kept his eyes on her, before he took a deep breath.
"Cara?" He felt the knife being pressed down deeper, and how it broke the skin, not enough to be deadly, even for a mortal, but enough to draw blood. "Cara, it's me, Loki."
He expected the knife to slit his throat, but instead her eyes became blue once more, and warm as she blinked, she seemed to come around, taking in the situation and she threw the knife away.
"Loki…I am," she freed him at once, looking at him in horror, but he simply smiled, he shouldn't be as fascinated by this as he was, yet he couldn't prevent himself from being. Seeing how she almost scared herself, and how different her behaviour had just been was nothing else by fascinating, and it also felt like he had seen a side closer to who she really was, even if he didn't liked it.
The coldness, he had nothing against it, but the fear he had seen and felt was simply wrong. He was unsure of why he thought so, but seeing her afraid if didn't felt right. It also reminded him of how he felt when he had nightmares, he was terrified when he woke up, and he never felt as himself.
"Cara it is alright," he sat up, but his words didn't seem to reach her as she seemed to be on the brink of shaking. He understood that it wasn't due to her actions, she had done worse things than almost slitting someone's throat, and he did a calculated guess and come to the conclusion it was due to the dream. "Cara?"
The blue eyes turned towards him and he gave her a small smile, hoping it would calm her down, but it seemed to have the opposite effect and he stopped, wondering how a smile could be frightening?
"You are bleeding," Cara said after a few minutes and Loki touched his throat, he couldn't feel the pain, or maybe he had been to occupied to do so, but he was still bleeding.
"I am alright, it will soon stop, so no reason to fret," he assured her, but she remained silent and he observed her, only now noticing that she was wounded too, to his surprise. "You are hurt as well!"
He tried to remember if he had accidently hurt her? But he had only touched her shoulder, and it was he wrists that were bleeding, almost as she had been chained. He could not understand how she had afflicted such wounds. But he slowly stood up, as to not scare her and walked over to his bathroom and collected a med kit. He had used it mostly in his younger years to treat the wounds he would at practise, and his father had forbid him to seek out his mother for treatment.
He returned to the bed and slowly sat down, pushing the kit to Cara, so she could treat herself. He was baffled to see that her magic hadn't healed her yet, if it was as great as he had thought it was, but he guessed her internal injuries was still server enough that her body only focused on that. She seemed to be better, however, he had seen the damage and he almost thought of it as a miracle that her body could heal at all from such injuries.
"Cara?" He asked when she had done nothing to move, or stop the bleeding. He saw that her pyjamas had become bloody and it was dripping down on his bed, it didn't bothered him being easily cleaned with magic. However, he feared that she may bleed to death, the wounds was not deadly per see but without treatment they was, yet the woman did not seem to care. "Cara?"
His voice made her turn towards him and he nodded towards the med kit and she seemed to see it for the first time and she opened it with shaky hands, removing what she need but soon stopped again and Loki met her eyes.
"May I?" He asked, thinking she needed assistants, as she barely seemed to be aware of the situation. He could see that she thought it over, unsure about it but slowly nodded and held out her wrists.
Loki observed the wound, once again wondering how she afflicted them? They were deep and the skin was missing in places, it seemed as she had been shackled for months, he knew that was impossible because she had been here the last couple of days and she had none of these wounds when she went to bed yesterday.
He understood that it was due to some sort of magic, magic that was unfamiliar to him and he wondered where it came from and who had given her such injuries? He could almost laugh over how it felt as he knew nothing around her, which was ridicules because he possessed great knowledge, yet she knew about things no other knew about.
He carefully dressed the wounds, making sure to add enough pressure to stop the bleeding, but not tight enough to cause her pain. But at the moment she didn't seem to notice and it started to scare him a bit, and he wondered if he should call for his mother, maybe she knew what to do. Was this a Midgardian thing? Despite studying Cara's kind a bit, he felt that he lacked even the simplest knowledge about them at the moment, and what was worse was that the woman in front of him was from another world, so it was possibly that her kind reacted different than theirs.
He could feel the headache building behind his eyes as he finished treating her wounds and he placed a bandage over his own throat before returning the med kit to his bathroom. He threw a glance in the mirror and he could almost the the dark circles under his eyes being created and he closed his eyes for a second before returning to Cara.
"You should try to get some rest, you seem to be exhausted," he told her and she shook her head violently, and he understood that she thought of the nightmares. "I can wake you once more if you are having more dreams."
"You may not be able to," she said and he blinked in surprise, he normally found it interesting and almost comical that she never gave him a straight answer, but at the moment he wished she did! Then he wondered if this was how everyone felt as they spoke to him, and that made him smile. "But you need to sleep, I apologise for waking you."
"There is no need for an apology, and what kind of host would I be if I left my guest to herself?" He tried to joke, surprising himself once more, if it was anyone else he would have left them and gone to sleep. "Cara you are in need of sleep, you are barely present."
"I can't!" She shouted at him as her eyes met his. "You saw what happened! I don't even know if I can get away again, if I go back to sleep, not even if you try to wake me!"
He glanced at her wrists, so the wounds were inflicted in the dreams, how was such a thing possible? He almost sighed, for every answer she was gave, he was left with more questions, and then he smiled once more, just as he did towards others. However, he was unsure if she did it intentionally as he did.
"You desire to speak about it?" He offered, showing that he wasn't offended by her shouting.
"You need to sleep Loki."
"So do you, but if you are unable, I am offering to keep you company, if you so wish," he knew that almost everyone else would have declined, not that he would have made such an offer to many others. Cara seemed to be unsure of what to answer, so he decided to take it as a yes. "May I return to the bed?"
"It's your bed," she answered with a giggle and Loki smiled towards her, thinking nothing sounded as good as her giggle at that moment, it was anything than the fear she had expressed, and anything than that pleased him.
"It is, but I have lent it to you as we speak, and if you prefer to speak to me from over here, I will accept that."
"No it's alright, but thank you for asking," she said as he walked over. He may be cold at times and far from caring, but he had manners, and he knew how to be polite, compared to Thor. It was almost ridicules that they had the same tutors and yet Thor had learnt nothing, it didn't stop everyone from loving him, but Loki repressed those thoughts, seeing it wasn't what he wished to focus on.
"You wish to talk about it?" He offered again as he laid back against the pillows, eyes on the ceiling as so many nights before, when he had been unable to sleep. He soon felt how Cara did the same, and the silent hang between them for a while, it wasn't a heavy one, no he was rather relaxed, however he feared that he may fall asleep if she weren't to speak soon. He wondered if it was her plan and he turned towards her, to see that she was staring at the ceiling and it seemed as she was unsure of where to start.
"The world Rahl came from was a world full with magic, since it's included in everything, not only spells, but also the land and every person. Most ones had a hint of the gift but unable to use it, and the ones who doesn't have it, well they are still bound to the magic, in some ways. I will skip the history lesson," Loki almost intervened, saying he wished to hear the history of the land, but he knew it wasn't the right moment for such a thing. "Darken Rahl ruled a country named D'Hara, and to say that he was a cruel man is an understatement, he tried to rule the world and he almost succeeded, would have if Richard hadn't stopped him."
"Is Richard a former partner of you?" He heard himself ask and Cara turned towards him with a smile, seeing far from offended by his question.
"No, his true love was Kahlan and no one else, but their love is another story. However, Richard killed Darken Rahl, his father and became the new ruler of D'Hara, and a close friend of mine. Back then I was still young and I used my magic freely, unaware of the fact that my father can find me that way. Luckily he could not travel between worlds yet."
"You are using your magic now," Loki pointed out and she nodded.
"He already knows that I am here, so there is no meaning in not using it. Anyway, we all tried to get by in this world, especially when another war came around, the enemy army was lead about a man named Jagang, a man as cruel as Rahl, or according to some, even more so. The difference between him and Rahl was that Rahl was a wizard, a powerful once, but just a wizard, while Jagang was a Dream Walker."
"Was? Is he dead?"
"They all are," for a second he heard sorrow in Cara's voice. He had never thought of how it must feel to live longer than others and see them die. "A Dream Walker is a person who can enter anyone who possess the gift's dreams. The stronger your gift are the easier it is. As he enter your dreams he can force you to do things, and also do things to you, it's one of the worse form of torture, especially since he doesn't need to be near you. Jagang did a lot of damage this way during the war, capturing a lot of wizard and witches this way, forcing them to do his bidding."
"How did he die?"
"Oh, he was killed by my partner at the time, Nicci, she was more than displeased with him," Loki was for a second surprise to hear that Cara was attracted by both genders, he saw nothing wrong in it, as many others did in Asgard. It was not illegal, his mother had seen to that, yet it was frown up on my many.
"I apologise for the questions, but if he is dead, how can he hurt you?"
"Never apologising for asking questions, that's how we learn," she told him and Loki smiled, his mother had said the same to him when he was a child, yet there was moments when one did best in not asking questions. He felt that questioning Cara now was rude, or maybe it was because he was more direct by it, but he had a hard time follow everything. "He isn't the one hurting me, my father is."
"How? Can anyone become a Dream Walker?"
"I am unaware of how, and no, not everyone can. You have to be born one. They were common in the world before Richard and the others were born, but they died out until Lothian entered the Temple of Winds and made sure that a new Dream Walked would be born, a story for another time. The temple used to be between the worlds before Richard brought it back, however, it should be impossible for my father to enter, because Richard decided on which few could. But how is not important seeing that my father managed somehow."
"Is there a way to stop a Dream Walker? I may be wrong here but it didn't sound as you were affected by Jagang."
"I was not, there is a protection from a Dream Walker, created by one of Richard's ancestors, a bond between the ruling Rahl and his subjects, if you swear loyalty to the ruling Rahl you are protected. Me and others were already loyal to Richard, so we were safe from the beginning, however, seeing that Richard passed away a long time ago I doubt that won't work since I don't know who the new ruler is. It should be one of his relatives, yet not knowing him, I can't be loyal to him."
"Are you sure?" Loki asked and Cara became silent for a while before shaking her head.
"No one can be sure, but first of all Richard abolished the bond, he was a big speaker of freedom and disliked the bond, and with Jagang gone he saw no reason for people to plead to him. He could not remove the bond but was no longer forced to utter the words. Secondly I am unsure if it would work between worlds, magic as this are only bound to their world," Cara bit her lip before she sat up, placing her hands on her knees and closed her eyes. "Master Rahl guide us. Master Rahl teach us. Master Rahl protect us. In your light we thrive. In your mercy we are sheltered. In your wisdom we are humbled. We live only to serve. Our lives are yours."
Loki listened to the words, understanding that if Richard had been a speaker for freedom why he was against the words, however, if they protected his people did it really matter? But he found the words laughable, it was clear that the one who first wrote them down thought highly of themselves, and he wondered if they were as great as they thought?
"Did it work?"
"No."
"How can you tell? And is it because you aren't loyal?" He met her eyes as she lay down again, and he had a hard time seeing her say those words to someone and mean them, making him wonder who Richard had been. From what she had seen she was a strong and independent person and such words felt beneath her, but it was possibly that Richard didn't forced them on people, if he now spoke highly of freedom. All this made him more confused and as the woman next to him was more of a stranger than ever, he couldn't figure her out.
"I would have felt the bond between us, and it may be because I am not loyal or because of the worlds. Yet it doesn't matter, only that it didn't work." He thought that she sounded desperate and he could understand it. If she could not fight in her dreams she could not fall asleep, but he knew that no one worked without sleep, not even the Gods, the only difference was that they could not parish from sleep deprivation.
"Can there be another way to protect you?"
"None that I know off."
"Maybe we can find a solution, if your father are not supposed to have these powers they may not work in the same matter as before, therefore it may be another way to stop him."
Cara turned towards him and the look she gave him almost seemed say that there was no meaning to hope, and that he was stupid to do so. For a second he thought of her words of people entering a war they knew nothing about, and that's how he felt at the moment, yet he was unwilling to give up without a try.
For a second he paused and questioned why he was willing to try so hard for a person he knew so little about? She had not asked for his help, in all honest she tried to make him stop assisting her, yet he was willing. Was it because she saw and understood things about him few others did? Was it simply because she had woken his curiosity? He was unsure, and nonetheless he was willing to assist her.
"I will ask mother, she may know, she is after all a few thousand years old."
"Thank you," the words did not sound as genuine as they had done before, but he didn't comment on it. "You should try to sleep Loki."
"I appreciate the consideration, but I am alright, and in all honesty I am unwilling to leave you, if it may result in you falling asleep and never waking up." Cara turned towards him, laying on his side locking eyes with him, as she sighed.
"You are to ignorant for your own good," she said and Loki just smiled, being from anyone else if would have been an insult, but Cara said those words with worry and care. "But I will thank you, knowing that I can't stay awake by myself."
"As a Prince of Asgard it's my duty to assist a Lady in need."
"Is that so?" Cara raised any eyebrow. "Guess I have no other choose than accepting, seeing that infuriating a royalty by refusing their assistant can be dangerous."
"I hope you know that I would never hurt you for declining my offer?"
"I know, so don't worry. I am not as the other peasants around here," she answered and he could do nothing else than chuckle as her words took him by surprise.
"And thank the Gods for that."
"Doesn't that mean that you are thanking yourself by saying that?" Cara gave him a questioning look and he smiled.
"I am a God, a very great one, and I do deserve to be thanked from time to time!"
"Yes you do," hearing how sincere she sounded almost made overwhelmed, he often felt as she took his emotions on a wild ride, awaking them with simple words and actions, in a way no one else managed. "Does it hurt?"
Loki saw how she glanced at the bandage he had over his throat and he shook his head, he hadn't thought about it.
"I apologise for attacking you."
"The situation made it justified, however, I am glad I am not mortal seeing how easily you could have ended me then," he said and she smiled.
"I could have," she said it in a light tone, but he knew those words were true, and he thought about how dangerous she could be, he needn't fear her being immortal, yet he knew that he should be vary against her, since she was a stranger. But again he found himself reacting differently towards her and everyone else.
"So do you have a desirable topic you wish to speak about?" Loki asked her and she shook her head.
"You are the one staying up with me, so I will let you chose," he could almost always turn a conversation into what he wished for, but having someone giving him the choice was once again new, only his mother did that, not even Thor was that polite. It may be because the big oaf knew that he wouldn't be able to keep up with the topics Loki found most pleasant.
"Do you have any more books in the series borrowed?" He asked and she nodded, and he soon had five options in front of him and he studied them before choosing one on the subject of illusions, a part of magic that he loved.
"How about you reading it for me, and when you have any questions you can ask me, and I will see if I can answer," Cara offered and Loki nodded, opening the book starting to read it out loud.
Loki blinked a few times, waking up. He was unaware that he had fallen asleep, but as soon as he came to that realisation he turned around in search of Cara, afraid that she would be hurt, and he felt his heart raise when he saw that the bed was empty.
"I am alive," Cara said as she left the bathroom, with wet hair, she had taken a shower, in an attempt to stay awake, he guessed, judging from how tired she seemed to be.
"How long have I been out?" She glanced at her watch as she reached for something to drink, something he was unfamiliar with.
"Energy drink," she explained seeing his questioning look. "And you have been sleeping around five hours."
"I apologise, I was meant to keep you company," he slowly rose from the bed, feeling somewhat energetic.
"You needed the rest, and managed to stay awake myself."
"I can tell," Loki observed the empty coffee cups and bottles of the energy drink. "Does they work?"
"In large sums, yes, and I apologise for not removing them, I try to keep count on how many I have taken, too much caffeine can stop your heart."
"How much is too much?" Loki observed the amount of cans and if they managed to create a heart attack, he thought this was too much.
"I am unsure, I rarely drink these, not finding the taste to my disliking, but sometimes you have to do it anyway, especially since coffee couldn't provide me with the amount needed."
Loki simply nodded, once again feeling as he knew far too little about Midgardians.
"Have you eaten?" He asked instead and she nodded towards a tray he assumed his mother had sent them and walked over, it seemed as Cara had eaten fairly little but he didn't pressure her about it as he took a plate before turning towards her again. "We can visit my mother as soon as possible, if you desire?"
"Yes please," she answered and Loki understood how exhausted she was since she didn't protest this time and he finished his breakfast as fast as he could, before changing from his sleeping attire and making himself presentable, and they then left.
"I have never heard of such a thing love," Frigga met his eyes almost sorrowful, especially when she glanced at Cara who showed no emotions. Being another situation he would have found it interesting to see how she was unwilling to show much to anyone else besides him, and he would have wondered more over why, but he pushed the thoughts away and turned towards his mother instead.
"Do you think we have something that can aid her?" Frigga turned towards the bookshelves, feeling as if their library should have some spell that could be of use.
"I am sure we do love, but I am afraid it may take some time to find," Frigga glanced at Cara once more who simply nodded. "Could I ask you to write down everything you know about a Dream Walker, and its full history? Are you able to do so dear?"
"I will write everything I know, Your Highness," Cara assured them and Frigga turned to her youngest, with a conflicted expression, unsure if she should ask Loki to keep Cara company or ask for his help.
"Loki can you help me search?" She came to the conclusion that they had a higher chance of finding the means to help the girl if they both searched among the books.
"Of course mother, any particular titles I should look out for?"
"No, bring me everything you can find on sleep, spells, bounds, curses and protections," they both knew that it would be a high amount of books, but as of now it was the only thing they could do.
"What did you take?" Loki turned towards Cara as she swallowed some pills. She had been awake for three days already and he knew that she was only alive due to her healing magic, but he was fearing of how much her body could take.
"Modafinil, it can help a normal person to stay awake for two days, so hopefully it will give me a few hours," she tried to smile towards him but she failed miserable.
"Is it wise to mix it with all the others?"
"No, definitely not, but I don't have much of a choice, do I?" She snapped, she had done that more recently but he was not offended, she always apologised and he knew it was due to her lack of sleep.
"For how long do you think it will work?" Loki had noticed that she had started to become immune to everything else she had tried, the coffee, energy drinks, some drug from Midgard he was unfamiliar with, and now these pills.
"I don't know, hopefully for some time, not forcing me to do something else."
"Such as?" Loki wondered how many methods she had to keep awake.
"Other drugs, worse once, injections of different sorts, and well death is the final solution." She simply admitted and he could once again see death as a solution, that how she rather died than went to sleep.
"Let's try to avoid that last one," Loki tried to joke with her but she just shrugged her shoulders. "How about a walk, it will keep you active."
Cara only nodded as they left his room.
"Loki!" Thor's voice echoed between the walls as he came running towards them, soon pulling Loki into a hug.
"Can you stop doing that every time you see me, you big oaf," Loki complained, he loved his brother, but he wasn't overly found of being smashed every time Thor saw him, however his brother only laughed in response.
"Father just informed me that I soon will be king, the coronation will be in a few months!" Thor clapped his hands and Loki almost sighed, this was there new king, a man that clapped hands as a young child.
"I am pleased," he simply answered when Thor leaned forward and for a second he feared that Thor would hug him once more, but instead Thor tilted his head, scratching his beard.
"There is something different with you," Thor started. "You look awfully tired, oh both of you do, hi Lady Cara!"
"I hope you learn to become sharper than this before you are crowned," Loki said as Cara only nodded as a greeting, however Thor smiled towards them.
"So why are you so tired? Have you stayed up and practising some hocus pocus?" Thor asked and Loki almost sighed and he was about to answer his brother when Cara did.
"Yes, we are trading spells, and some of them are very difficult for the other one to learn."
"Hm, wish I could help you with that, but I fight without all the illusions and sparkles and such, I have heard that some tea can help," Thor offered and Loki wished to laugh, they were way beyond tea now.
"Thank you for your advice, we will take it into consideration, but we have to continue now. Congratulations on your coronation."
"You are welcome to attend if you wish Lady Cara," Thor waved as he rushed down another corridor, to inform his friends, Loki presumed.
"Why did you lie to him?"
"He would have tried to help otherwise, most likely not taking no for an answer, and I do not wish him to do so, he is too much of a brute to be of any help," Cara informed him and Loki chuckled, that was his brother. He could understand the woman's action; Thor would try to stand guard against her nightmares or try some other ridicules thing. Loki only nodded as they continued walking.
"Are you sure about this?" Loki met the blue eyes, she was barely standing up by now, being the sixth day and was really worried about her, thinking she would die at any second. The worry was almost ridicules, he had never worried about the death of anyone before, possibly because Gods didn't die, unless they went through a ritual, or possibley fell over the edge of Asguard, but that may only be a myth invented by scared parents.
His Grandfather had, but he had gone willingly after turning hundred thousand years old. Thor had been devastated, Loki had not felt the same sorrow, but he doubted he would do that unless it was his children of his mother, yet now he feared that Cara may die.
It was almost laughable, he hadn't known her long, and he shouldn't fear such a thing, especially knowing that she may move on one day. Nonetheless he knew that he would feel some sort of emptiness he hadn't known in a long time, not since his children and Signy left, but yet he felt that he wouldn't feel the same about Cara as Signy. He loved the other woman, yet he never felt an emptiness after she left.
Their relationship had been heated, quarrel after quarrel and he felt that she never understood him, not fully at least. He missed his sons, and he was still upset that she had left with them, without a word to him and he had searched for them, yet without result and he guessed she had gotten help to hid themselves, hopefully she would come back with them one day, if not they would have a good life with their mother. Because if there was one thing Signy was, it was a good mother, no matter how much he and her argued and all their problem, she never stopped loving the twins. In comparison to Angrboda, who had stopped loving their children long before they stopped loving each other.
Yet Cara didn't meant to him what either of those woman had, and their relationship was different, he didn't love her and she didn't love him, no this was something else. Maybe he just thought that it was something else, because she saw him differently from everyone else, but this was how Thor described his friendship with those four mumbling idiots he kept around. But Cara had sad no such words, so maybe he was just imagine things, trying to understand the woman.
Which he had come to understand was impossible, no matter how he tried, he couldn't, she was a mystery to him. As her actions now, he could tell that she was terrified of doing this, of taking Warmweed, as she had informed him it was, because it would make her mind numb and for her to only follow orders. She was terrified and yet she had asked him to help her. she didn't trust him, nevertheless she would give him the power to order her.
He was more than confused and for a second he felt as he wanted to take the leaf, to make his own mind go numb, so he could stop thinking about this.
"I am sure Loki, I can't stay awake on my own anymore, so I need you to order me to do so," he saw the fear in her eyes, even if her voice was steady. He had agreed to help her, but seeing how afraid she was he almost said no, he was about to when he heard a knock.
"Loki?" It was his mother and he rose from the sofa and walked over letting her in, she kissed his cheek and he smiled towards her, before Frigga turned towards Cara, with a concern look, but she was intelligent enough not to ask her any idiotic questions, as Thor would have.
"I think I may have found a way to help you dear," Frigga walked over to Cara who blinked a few times, barely able to concentrate on the Goddess and Frigga gave her the time she needed before continuing. "I have found a spell that can create a similar bond to the one you had with Richard."
"Oh?" So many questions were in just that sound, and Loki almost smiled, despite how exhausted she was, Cara was still curious, and suspicious.
"It will work in a similar way, you will swear loyalty to someone and that will protect you, whomever it is does not need to be a magician as the Rahl's were, and with this spell the bond shall work between different worlds," Frigga smiled a bit proud of herself for what she had achieved. "So do you have anyone you wish to swear loyalty to? The one does not need to be here in this world."
"Does the person need to be alive?"
"Yes, that is something that is required," Cara laughed at those words, not a happy and relieved one, no she sounded more mental than anything.
"They are all dead, at least the ones that I could be loyal to," she said when she calmed down meeting Frigga's eyes. "I appreciate that you tried your highness, but it seems as death is my only option."
Cara chuckled and Frigga turned towards Loki with a worried expression and he shared her concern.
"Mother may I speak with Cara alone?" Frigga nodded and soon left the room and Loki turned towards Cara. "Are you sure that they are all dead?"
"I have buried almost all of them all, so I hope they were dead," she almost snapped at him and Loki nodded. "No relatives of them you know about?"
"I am unsure, time moves differently between the worlds, as you know, but even if there is, it would be the same problem as it was with Richards relatives, I don't know them and I can't be loyal to them."
"Are you sure that death is your only option?"
"I can't function on drugs for much longer, and if my options are between returning to my father and death, I chose the freedom of death," and there it was again, he could not understand how death was a freedom, but he didn't ask.
"You could swear it to me, if you are willing," Loki offered after a few minutes of silence, the first one he found uncomfortable between them.
"And drag you into this fucking mess more, no thank you!"
"And how would you have avoided to drag any other being into this, if you swore loyalty to them?" He gave her a look and she sighed.
"They knew what they signed up for when they entered my life, they could walk away, or I could, here not so much. I am stuck in this world, which mean that if you get more involved in this, you are stuck in this as well!"
"So killing yourself is a more suitable solution?" He simply wondered and he saw a glint of something in her eyes.
"Than the alternative, yes. You have no idea what you are getting yourself into Loki, you have only seen some of it, and I should have been rude and walked away from the beginning. So maybe it is better to end it before someone else gets involved," Cara's voice died down and Loki met her eyes.
"You clearly have no desire to die."
"Of course not! I barely ever had! I only wanted to live my life my way!" She snapped again and Loki gave her a calm look, he know so little of what she had been through, but if her father was willing to do something like this to her, he had no problem imagine what else he may do.
"Then why end it? I am not going to force you to swear loyalty to me, seeing that we barely more than strangers, but I am willing to offer you a alternative solution," he honestly said and he saw how her eyes became watery and how the tears soon started flowing. He almost screamed for his mother, unsure of how to handle the situation, he hadn't meant to make her cry, and he was unsure of what had made her cry.
"You really are to ignorant for your own good," she said with a small laugh and Loki smiled back.
"Luckily for you," he answered as he called for his mother who returned and smiled, almost knowing that her youngest would be able to convince the woman, he wasn't said to have a silver tongue without reason. "I think we found a suitable solution."
"I am pleased to hear it," Frigga turned to Loki almost knowing what he would say before he uttered the words.
"Are your present needed for the spell to work?"
"No, your magic is more than enough to cast it," she kissed his forehead before handing him the papers.
"Would they still work if I alter the words of the oath some?" He glanced at the paper and Frigga thought about it, the words in the oath per see was not as important as the words of the spell, as long as the subject showed loyalty they would work.
"They should, the spell should have a direct effect," she gave them another smile. "I wish you both a good night's sleep."
"Thank you Your Highness," Cara said with a more genuine tone than she had ever used towards the older woman.
"You can call me Frigga, dear, and I am glad I could help you," Frigga waved goodbye leaving the room as Loki altered the words of the oath before turning them over to Cara who read them, smiling.
"I am ready when you are," Loki assured her and she took a deep breath.
"Loki: God of Mischief, protect me. Loki: God of Mischief, keep the shadows away from me. Loki: God of Mischief, help me. In your home I am sheltered. In your library I can find knowledge. In your world I can be free. I live to find my freedom again. My life is my own, no one else," Cara ended the oath, just as he ended the spell, and it was as his mother had spoken, he could feel the bond immediately.
"Did Richard feel this all the time?" It was almost a bit overwhelming, feeling the contact of another being all the time, he could only feel that she was there, in another way than his physical body could, nevertheless it was overwhelming.
"Hm in a way yes, he had a whole country connected to him, so he didn't felt them as much as we felt him. We was able to tell if he was alive or not, so the times he went to the temple or between the Veil, we couldn't feel him anymore, we could not say he had died, only that he didn't exist anymore, until he return. I guess it's different for you, seeing I am the only one who is bound to you, meaning you feel it much stronger than he ever would."
"It is not what I imagined," Loki finally answered and Cara shook her head.
"It's most likely because you are exercising magic that are meant for another world, even if the spell is from your world," Cara answered as she tried to keep her eyes open.
"You need to sleep before you pass away from exhaustion!"
"If you move from the sofa I will," she gave him a small smile and he shook his head.
"Take the bed, it's more comfortable," he left no room for arguing, the sofa was far from uncomfortable, but not as comfortable as the bed. He could tell that Cara wished to protest, but it seemed as she didn't have the energy to do so, which pleased him because neither did he. He may have gotten some sleep during the past week, but not nearly enough to have him functioning proper. Cara walked over before she turned towards him.
"It's big enough for us both, unless you wish to sleep on the sofa."
"Are you sure?" He had fallen asleep next to her some of the days, but she had always left the bed in attempts to keep herself awake, and he had guessed the thought of sharing a bed with him had been undesirable. But when she nodded he walked over, uninterested in arguing with her, preferring his bed over the sofa, and he soon laid down on the opposite side of her. He had almost fallen asleep when she spoke again.
"Thank you Loki," she whispered but he heard her none the less.
"I am glad I could be of any help," he answered, being far from often he could, Cara only hummed before he heard how she fell asleep, and he soon did the same.
