Chapter 4: Essence Of A Witch

"Focus Evie, I don't want you to be too distracted when you go out hunting on your own."

Evie focused her breathing as she took out Shadow and aimed it at the mannequin in front of her. This training, this ancient technique her mother wanted her to use, took a lot of energy from her. Charging forward, she used the shadow slice maneuver and chopped it up to bits. Various other witches stood beside her mother, taking notes about how she performed well.

"She has a ton of potential, Lady Kuroe." A scratchy voice witch commented, giving her a smile. "I've seen many of witches in my life not even fully master the powers of darkness like she does."

"Indeed, I see her powers growing exponentially." A British speaking one spoke beside her. "I would want her in my coven as soon as possible."

"Sorry ladies, but my daughter already has a coven, my coven to be exact." Her mother's silken tones spoke out over the crowd of voices. Evie looked up to see her mother smiling down at her through her hooded face. "I couldn't be any prouder of her progress."

She had changed back into her regular form after school and was currently with Shadow at her mother's mansion. A large gathering of witches had come over to see her progress and ask her mother if they could have her in their covens to take down the humans and exterminate the soul reapers. No matter how many times she told her mother, she refused to accept the fact that her daughter wanted to be a soul reaper like her father.

Her father, Stephen Blake, was a meister that helped out at a school in New York. He was trained by his parents to protect the weak and innocent from getting their souls taken from evil people and witches. Her mother, Kuroe Mitikahara, ran a secret organization called the Red Moon Huntresses. They were all witches that used their powers to steal the souls of meisters and use their powers to strengthened their partners. They had met perchance during a raid in a nightclub where her father took out a number of Kiishin souls while her mother took a ton of them right under his nose. He had tracked her down outside the city, but was hesitant to take her down due to the fact that she had saved his life during the scuffle. Her mother had married her father in order to gain his soul along with his partner, but the more time she spent with him, the more time she fell in love with him. For a short amount of time, they were fools in love.

That is, until she realized she was pregnant.

The first child is something to celebrate. Kuroe hoped that the baby was a female that she could pass her blood onto and train her under the mark of the Red Moon. Stephen hoped it was a male so that he could train him to become a meister like himself and defend the weak. To his surprise, the baby turned out to be a male. Frustrated, Kuroe dumped their first son, Gabriel, onto Stephen as they tried again for a female. The worst happened as they continued to have males for six more times. Gabriel soon became a big brother for Rio, Matthew, Aaron, Micheal, Raphael, and Stephen Jr. Kuroe was getting madder and madder the more males she had until finally Angel or Evie was born.

With the birth of her newest prodigy, she divorced Stephen out of spite and left for her home in Nevada to take back her leadership over the Red Moon Huntresses. She made sure that Evie was trained to be nothing but the most powerful witch in the city, even more so than the Gorgon sisters. Evie was sadden that she couldn't see her father at all due to her mother wanting her to never interact with the boys or her father. Secretly, however, she would message her older brother and get updates on how he was doing in New York along with the other boys.

One day she wished that her mother would get it through her thick skull that she didn't want to be a witch. For now, she would play along with her delusion and be the daughter that she wanted her to be. But she would not stop "Angel and Hoshi" from attending school and making new alliances with the students of Death Weapon Meister Academy.

Evie was currently wincing as her mother tore her hair up with the brush. The woman was quite the beauty for her time and her beauty carried over to her aged self as well. She was a tall, thin woman with pale skin and mint-green eyes. Her long black hair came down to her ankles, a single white streak in her hair due to a curse that was placed upon her. Her attire consisted of a long, sleek, black dress, long black gloves, and a matching cape. Leaning against the wall was a long black staff with a crescent moon stone on the top.

"So how was school today darling? Did you see any potential souls to take?" No surprise that her mother would first start off a conversation with asking that.

"It was good, I learned a lot when I went there, I guess. I met a lot of-" Evie started to say before she was rudely cut off.

"That sounds fascinating, can you pass me the gel right there? Your roots are atrocious!"

Evie sighed as she handed her the white tub of gel. Her head was suddenly jerked backwards as she harshly brushed the sides of her hair. Shadow stood in the background, sitting on the windowsill and smoking in front of the open window. Kuroe blushed as she kissed the top of her head.

"You are beautiful, powerful, and worthy of inheriting what I have built for you. I hope that one day you and your partner will carry on my legacy and take over this town." She hugged her back, smiling slightly. "I love you very much."

"I love you too mother." With that, Kuroe left the room. Evie stared at Shadow with a sadden smile.

"Hey are you okay?" He asked her, seeing tears coming from her eyes. Running over towards her, he wrapped his arms around her body and allowed her to cry on his shoulder. "It's okay, you can cry on me."

"Shadow, no Hoshi, why is it hard to be honest with people and even myself?"
