"Isn't she beautiful, Jacob?" Newt asked. "Her hair is the shade of a Norwegian Ridgeback."
Jacob laughed. "Go on then, go talk to her." He pushed Newt in the direction of the beautiful young woman. She looked sad, her red hair was long and curly, and her eyes were golden brown, shimmering in the dim light beneath the trees.
Newt cleared his throat. "Ma'am, I—" he stopped; she looked up at him, as if puzzled by the way he addressed her. "I'm Newt Scamander." He held out a hand. He couldn't help but notice she was wearing black gloves as she reached out her hand to shake his own. "And that is Jacob." He pointed to Jacob in the corner near a tree.
"Renesmee Cullen," she introduced. The trip had been to find vampires, and the small town of Fawks, Arizona, was said to hold an entire clan of them.
"Might I ask why you are in the forest all alone?" he asked, looking around as if to see a group of other Muggles that she would be with. Perhaps she had been split from a hiking group. She laughed.
"I am the scariest thing out here." She seemed to think about it, and then spoke again, "At least, my uncle Jasper is."
"Your uncle?" Newt asked, puzzled. She nodded.
"He was quite the army man, in his day," she explained.
"I heard that there were vampires here," the sudden voice of Jacob interrupted, startling both Newt and the woman. The announcement seemed to amuse her.
"Oh I see, some local gossip. What do you intend to do if you find vampires?" she asked, turning her attention to Jacob, and the intensity of her stare made him back away. Although the question hadn't been asked to him, Newt replied.
"I wanted to find out more about their habits. I have heard it is rather difficult for vampires to remain in one area, since rumours start, of course," Newt explained.
Her eyes observed him curiously, as if she was scrutinizing him, making sure he was being honest. He held her gaze with a gentle smile.
"Might I say, you are rather stunning," Newt said, a slight blush coming over his cheeks.
"Are you trying to flirt with me m…" her voice trailed off, it was clear she hadn't thought before she spoke.
Newt noticed the pause. What was she going to add? Muggle? Surely, the woman could be a witch, but why would she be in this area alone? It seemed to be highly unlikely.
It wasn't more than a minute later that a man arrived. 'Was this her husband?'
"Nessie, who are these strangers?" the man said. He had long blond hair, and his eyes darted between the three of them. Jacob tried to make himself look smaller.
"I hate that," she said viciously, ignoring the question about the men.
"Do you think they are to be trusted?" he asked. Her eyes sparkled at Newt, and he felt his knees grow weak.
"Uncle, that is Jacob, and this is, Newt was it?" she asked. He nodded.
"Uncle?" Newt asked. He hardly looked old enough to have a niece his own age. She had a musical laugh that she uttered.
"Oh right, we are the vampires you have been looking for," she said, slipping off one hand of her leather gloves.
"Impossible," Newt said in wonder.
She reached out her palm outstretched, and he mimicked her movement. She moved her hand forward, and when it touched him, it was like he was being sucked into a Pensive. Her memories were around him, memories of her from birth, until the death of her husband, Jacob, a couple of years ago. She suddenly pulled back from him, as if the memory of losing him was still too painful for her to bear.
"Impossible," Newt repeated. Jasper laughed, but his laugh was hollow and without real pleasure.
"Mortal, surely you know better," he addressed Newt.
"Mortal? Perhaps, but no regular mortal, I am a wizard."
"How fascinating," Nessie said. "Is he one as well?" She nodded to Jacob. Before her eyes landed on Newt again, Jacob shook his head vigorously.
"Nessie, you have a new fan," Jasper joked.
"That isn't funny," she insisted, it was clear she was annoyed with him. Only later, Newt realised it was because of the loss of her husband, due to him refusing to become immortal.
"You love me," Jasper said with a wink, but then he was gone in a flash. She laughed softly.
"Wow, he is fast," Newt said, checking to see if anything had been disturbed during the vampires exit.
"Mum is the fastest one," she said, sitting down. "I used to slow down, you know, for him. I mean, shifters are fast, but…" her voice trailed off.
"I am sorry you lost someone you loved, I know, well, my childhood sweetheart is marrying my brother," Newt admitted with a long sigh.
"Well, that sucks," Nessie said. She patted the ground next to her, encouraging him to sit down.
"Well, Newt, buddy, I will just get back to Queenie then, shall I?" Jacob said, edging backwards towards the trail they followed to get here.
"See you later, Jacob." Newt smiled.
"There is one thing I don't understand," she said slowly.
"About what?"
"Your brother is stealing your woman, yet you do nothing," she said seriously.
"I wouldn't say he stole her," Newt mumbled.
"No, I don't suppose you would, you don't seem like you hold it against either of them."
Newt shrugged. "They make each other happy; I've always been more content around creatures. I find you oddly easy to speak to."
"I like humans, I love how simple everything is, life, death, love, it must all be so heightened, so passionate."
"But time, time is so essential, how does one create a novel breaking stereotypes when…" he trailed off. His mind clearly somewhere else.
"Time? What is time? What is the passing of time when it's without someone you love?"
Newt sat there, considering her question. He could understand what she was thinking, how her life wasn't worth living without someone to share it with.
Newt wasn't scared of her. He watched her feasting on an antelope and simply sat making notes in his spiral notebook. The longer he spent around her, the more he longed to be a part of her world, and not just a stranger looking into the glass window.
She looked up at him, the change in her mood was evident. She always became edgy when hungry, but Newt supposed that was normal. He himself felt slightly better after a good meal himself. She smiled at him. Blood was dripping from her red lips, and a fleeting thought passed over Newt that Nessie sure was a messy eater.
After his meetings with the Cullen clan, he just couldn't help but find a strange acceptance from Bella and Edward.
"She looks tough, but she's easily hurt," Bella's words echoed through his mind as he watched her. He swore to himself he would never hurt her, in a couple of months he had fallen in love, he had fallen for a vampire.
"I wish I could be part of your world," Newt said, his voice slightly more than a whisper in the wind, but her expression changed, and he knew she had heard him. He could feel his cheeks turn red, and suddenly she was sitting beside him. She reached out her cold white hand to touch his.
"I don't think I could, you know," she stuttered, for the first time since Newt had met her, she seemed to be at a loss for words.
"Renesmee, I think I love you," he blurted.
"You can't," she said, puzzling him.
Newt's eyes looked at her with a hidden question. 'Why not? Does she not love me? Or is she scared to love again?'
"I have lost a man I loved before, I don't think I can handle another," Nessie admitted.
"You wouldn't lose me," Newt said, taking the hand that she had pulled back.
"How do you know?"
"You could turn me, I could stay with you forever," Newt said. It was clear from the look on her face that she wasn't sure what to make of this confession. This declaration was something different for a mortal, or a wizard.
"I can't," she said softly.
"Why not?"
"I am only half vampire, I cannot turn anyone," she shrugged.
"I'm sure Bella wouldn't mind, your mum seems to love me," Newt said cheekily.
"You would be giving up magic," she said with a sigh.
"It doesn't seem like I'll be giving up anything if I think of what I'm gaining. I love you, and that won't change."
As words failed her, she nodded, leaning in to kiss Newt, and Newt held onto her, kissing her passionately until he needed to stop for air.
"Mortals, such fragile beings," she joked, and ran a pale hand over Newt's freckled cheek; he leant into her touch, and laughed.
"I won't be mortal forever, love," Newt said. He watched the passion flare up inside her, and he knew that neither of them would be able to refrain for long.
