"Ow," Élise groans as Reid was driving to the hospital. "Oh. Ow-ow-ow!"
"Don't worry; we're almost there," Reid assures his already-in-labor wife.
"I hope so," Élise whiningly replies. "Promise me that if I start making threats to you or hurt you in any way, shape, or form, that you won't take them seriously."
"I won't," Reid promises before he tries to ramble. "It's common for…"
"No statistics right now." Élise orders.
"Okay." Reid guarantees her before asking, "How are you feeling, turtle dove?"
"Aw," Élise looks loving to Reid. "I find it so incredibly sweet of you to ask me how I'm feeling. So…let me tell you how I'm feeling." She lets out a breathy air before, "I'M ABOUT TO HAVE TWO BABIES COME OUT OF ME!" Élise starts shouting at the top of her lungs. "AND THE YOTCOSECOND YOU GET ME PREGNANT AGAIN, I'M GOING TO CRACK THAT COCONUT HEAD OF YOURS OPEN, AND DRINK YOUR BRAINS LIKE MILK!"
"Élise…" Reid tries to talk.
"I'LL CHEW YOUR BRAINS LIKE BUBBLEGUM!" Élise shrieks.
Reid opens his mouth,
"TALK AND I'LL KILL YOU!" Élise seethes through her teeth.
Reid meekly raises his finger.
"I'LL CASTERATE YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS!"
Reid was in complete silence for thereon.
Élise and Reid were in the hospital room when their OB/GYN, Dr. Foster, came into the room.
"Oh, my," Dr. Foster exclaimed. "You're really ready to have those twins out."
"I am." Élise whines in pain. "Oh. Oh-ho-ho! Please! Just get these 37-week babies out of me! I can't take it anymore!"
Dr. Foster chuckles in amusement. "You know very well you can't rush birth."
"Let's do some of those breathing exercises," Reid suggested. "You can do the ones we learn at those classes or maybe the ones in the rhythm of that song? That one that goes, "We will…we will…rock you. Come on, sing it."
"I WILL…KILL YOU…IF YOU DON'T…SHUT THE HELL UP RIGHT NOW!"
Reid pursed his lips tightly together and stood still.
"I just wanted to remain you both of the C-Section. Normally, your twins can be delivered vaginally if the first baby is facing head down, but from your recent ultrasound, Baby A is still in a breach."
"I was still hoping for a vaginal delivery, but in the end, I just want to hold my healthy babies."
"We're going to give you your babies today, okay?" Dr. Foster reassures her and Reid before asking, "Now, do you want an epidural?"
"Hopefully, doc, I don't…" Élise cries out in pain. "Maybe, yes."
"I'm going to get everything set up, okay?"
"Okay." Élise nods her head before she cries out again and Dr. Foster left the room, leaving Élise and Reid alone.
"I wish I had some food or something to drink," Élise began talking to herself. "Unfortunately, I can't because I'm about to have two lettuce-size babies cut out of me instead of the vaginal way and…"
Élise noticed Reid standing still with his arms to the stand and in silence.
"WHY THE FUCKING HELL ARE YOU STANDING LIKE THAT, YOU EMPTY BIG-HEADED JACKASS CLOWN SCARECROW?!"
"What the hell you want me to do?!" Reid bursts out.
Élise lowers her eyebrows and snarls at him.
"Élise." Reid gives her a sweet smile. "How about some ice cubes to melt in your mouth?"
"Please?" Élise flutters her eyes.
Reid kisses her forehead and leaves but not before correcting her,
"And actually, the babies are Swiss chard-size…"
"I'm going to kill you." Élise hisses, causing Reid to leave immediately.
Hours later…
Élise and Reid—both dressed in scrubs—were now in an operating room with a team of other doctors and nurses. The room was prepped for potential emergencies and stocked with life-saving equipment and medication.
"So, dad," Dr. Foster starts a conversation with him, "Are you ready?"
"Well, I helped deliver a baby while I was on a case in Boston six years ago, so yeah. I'm ready."
"Wow," One of the other doctors, Dr. Ryan McKnight, overheard Dr. Reid. "Where'd you go to medical school?"
"Oh, I'm not a medical doctor," Reid reassured him. "I'm an academic doctor; I have three PhDs. I actually memorized the delivery manuals just in case one of my former colleagues went into labor in the field when she was pregnant with her first son."
"Extraordinary." Another doctor, Dr. Avery Benson, exclaimed.
"Uh, doctors," Élise tries to get their attention as she's sitting on a cold table, receiving a spinal block from the anesthesiologist, Dr. Liam Jackson. "I'm ready."
As Reid rushes to Élise's side, holding her hand, "Are you ready?"
"Let's do this." Élise was ready, but quickly warns Reid, "And try not to faint like when you did when we were having twins."
"You're doing great, Élise." Reid encouraged her, squeezing her hand.
"Okay, you two," Dr. Foster said as she carefully but was almost finished with cutting through layers and tissues and muscles, "I'm in the uterus and…"
"Here's Baby A!" She cried as she and the other doctors gently pull it out.
Reid's jaw dropped; as did Élise's.
"Oh, my…"
"Say hi to mommy and daddy!" Dr. Foster quickly shows them their baby after being suctioned and carried to the warming table to be cleaned and examined.
In less than three minutes, Baby B is delivered, arriving headfirst.
"Say hi to mommy and daddy!"
The same as Baby A, Baby B is sectioned and carried to the warming table to be cleaned and examined.
Both Reid and Élise are watching their babies being tendered to their own nurse and the neurologist examines them.
"You did it, mama." Reid endlessly gives Élise kisses on her forehead.
"You, too, papa," Élise gives Reid some credit before adding, "Even though I did all the work."
Back in the recovery hospital room in the hospital, Élise and Reid were holding their newborn twins for the first time.
"Hey, little buddy." Élise whispers. "It's mommy." Élise motions her head to Reid. "That's daddy holding your sister."
"We've been waiting 37 weeks and two days for you," Reid added.
"You're going to inherit your intelligence from your old man," Élise whispers in her baby son's ear.
KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK!
Dr. Foster peeked her head in.
"Hello, you two." Dr. Foster smiles.
"Hey, doc." Élise noticed her.
"Would you two like some company?"
Reid agreed, "Of course."
After a few seconds,
"Hey-hey-hey!" Garcia walks in; then Rossi and Krystall, Prentiss, Will and JJ, Alvez, Simmons and Kristy, Morgan and Savannah, Hotch, Jack, and Anastasia.
"You couldn't wait, could you, Garcia?" Élise figured, considering the number of bags she was carrying in her hands.
"I couldn't." Garcia squealed. "I was just so excited for you two!"
"Alex. James." Reid was surprised to see them.
"We had just arrived into town this morning," James explained.
"I'm giving a guest lecture at Georgetown in a few days and heard that you were in labor last night." Alex continued before adding, "Kudos to you both."
"Well, thank you both for coming and…"
"Where is he?" A jovial Diana Reid dashes into the room.
"Mom!" Spencer's face lit up to a new level when he saw his mother before he saw, "Aunt Ethel and Uncle Gordon."
"Oh, happy day!" Ethel was blissfully delighted to them. "What a happy day this is. I have a grand-niece and nephew."
"It is." Élise agreed.
KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK!
"May we come in?"
Élise was really surprised to see,
"Hey, bro. Brenda. Mother and dad."
"Did you think we would want to miss this?" Mr. Micha asked, smiling.
"I know I didn't want to." Ms. Geneva replies.
"Well, I'm glad you didn't," Élise said.
Kristy curiously asked, "So, what are their names?"
"Our son's name is Ethan Riley." Reid proudly announces.
Alex held her hand to her heart, "Ethan meaning strong, firm, and enduring and Riley meaning valiant, courageous, and rye clearing. Great names."
"I know my son's going to be strong, firm and enduring, which is why I wanted to name him Ethan, but Riley…it's in honor of Riley Jenkins."
"The boy who practically inspired you to do what you're doing right now." Morgan knew who Reid was talking about.
"Yup."
"And the girl? What's her name?"
"Our little girl's name is Zara Paris."
"Oh, exotic," Savannah said.
"There are many meanings to Zara," Élise explains. "From Arabic to Hebrew to Russian; blossoming flower, princess. And Paris…makes me think of dreams. Like how Paris is commonly known as The City of Dreams."
"It is." Hotch agreed before asking Anastasia, "You want to hold your siblings?"
"Yeah." Anastasia excitingly answered as Hotch placed her on the bed with Élise. After Reid gently placed baby Zara in her right arm and Élise places baby Ethan in her left arm,
"Hi, babies. I'm Anastasia. And I'm your big sister."
Almost everyone in the room went 'awww' and their hearts were melting.
KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK!
"Just wanted to see how's everyone." Dr. Foster walked in, smiling.
"Uh, excuse me, doc," Garcia hands Dr. Foster her small digital camera. "Can you take a few pics of the families?"
"Of course." Dr. Foster takes the camera from Garcia and as she's focusing the camera on Élise, Reid, Anastasia, and babies Ethan and Zara. "Big smile! And say 'Family!'"
"Family!"
Days later…
"Our kids are asleep," Reid said as he and Élise got into their bed.
"Yup." Élise grabs the photo album from the nightstand and opens it. She began to smile once she saw the pictures of them and their kids. One with Reid's family; another one with Élise's family. There was a picture of both families. And finally, one with everyone.
"What are you thinking?" Reid asked as he stared at the album with her.
"That we have a whole journey ahead of us?"
"And a great future," Reid added before kissing her on the lips.
