It was a normal patrol.
Shane and four others he was in charge of were to walk and scout around nearby forest close to the city limits and the camps outside of it.
As they got out of view of the city and camps the group of men stopped marching in unison and instead free walked. Quickly after Shane spoke
"At ease men, try to relax and just keep a look out. We have no need to rush back and get put on a shitty work detail"
"I can agree to that!"
"Me as well!"
Shane didn't know the people he was with. He and the four others were grabbed by a veteran and told to go patrol the nearby forest. Shane was put in charge because of his merit during sparing and the recent grimm attacks.
They spent hours just walking in circles looking busy just in case someone happened by and see them
After a while one of the men spoke up
"Hey how about we check out those woods over there?"
The woods he spoke of was about a mile down the path and kind of out of the way
Shane responded
"We don't need to, unless you want to be marched all the way over there"
They all stared at each other for a moment and then had a silent agreement
"We have nothing better to do and the day is still young, also I heard some merchants might be nearby. I've been wanting to see if I could buy a new scroll. Someone stole my last one"
Shane looked at all of them for a moment and then Shane gave in
"Alright then, form up"
After the march down they first scouted the woods. Of course they found nothing so the quickly headed back onto the path and formed back up
The man form earlier spoke up
"Alright, the merchants sho-"
He was cut off when a bullet rang out and shot him through his head. The man was unlucky enough to not of unlocked his aura yet and paid the price.
"Sniper in the trees! Form square and kneel!" Shane shouted
The men quickly did so. With the four of them the square was very inefficient and they all knew this
"Oh fuck, Rick is dead!"
Shane glanced down at the man and saw blood now forming around him. He died before he hit the ground. He was just unlucky enough to be the one the sniper chose first to shoot.
"Shut it! On my word we quickly move into the woods"
Shane quickly looked around trying to see if he could find the sniper. Without any lucky a bullet hit him in his helmet and ricocheted off.
"Fuck, now as one!"
They quickly moved into the woods taking several more shots until they reached the safety of the wood line. As soon as they were deep enough in the trees Shane ordered they break formation.
But before he could get another word out two people dropped from the trees onto them. They quickly took out two unnamed spartans leaving just Shane and the other. To his surprise another dropped down.
Him and the other man had the same idea as the both jammed their spears up into the assailant their spears going through their stomach and chest.
"At them!" Shane shouted
They then both heaved the body at the two attackers the body hitting them both throwing them off balance. Shane took the one on the left and the other spartan took the one on the right.
With several feint jabs of his spear and block some of the attackers strikes Shane finally saw an opening. He quickly thrust his spear into his opponents foot but finding they had an aura. So Shane stared attacking more aggressively.
He landed several hard hits into their torso and legs taking a couple of his own until he finally landed the killing strikes.
He jabbed at his leg but this time the spear went in and the attacker yelled. Shane then quickly yanked his spear out and thrust it into the stomach and then chest killing them instantly.
Shane then turned to help his comrade.
The attacker and the other spartan was still fighting until Shane came up giving the much needed support. After a quick struggle getting through the attackers arua, the attacker was finally finished with a spear to the throat and another to the chest.
Both men then took a second to catch their breath. They both then stood up and met each others gaze
The other spartan spoke first
"Fucking hell, the gods sure wanted us dead"
Shane chuckled for a second then looked to his side seeing his dead brothers
"To some they succeeded" He said as he pointed at them with his spear
"Shit. What do we do now?"
"Well. We should drag their bodies to the road for now and one stand guard as the other goes back or finds help along the way"
He nods to this as the both bend down to grab the first spartan
"I'll stay if need be, I have no problem with it"
Shane shakes his head
"No, it wouldn't be right for me to leave them behind and besides I'm ordering you to go anyways"
He scoffs but knows he has no other word in the matter
But before they fully lift the spartan up another shot rings out.
Shane cursed to himself.
Apparently the sniper from before wasn't among the three they killed
As he dove for cover he looked for the other spartan but to his surprise as he looks up the other spartan already had his shield up.
But before Shan could yell for him to take cover a much larger blast now sounded. One way bigger than the sound of a regular antimaterial rifle. It had to of been a antimaterial cannon. But those needed at least two or three people to even use
After a long, long wait Shane stayed on the ground not wanting to give away his position. Practically playing dead.
After a while many footsteps could be heard. When one approached him Shane shot up and stabbed his spear at the closest one.
To his surprise he was put on his ass and when he looked up to see who it was he saw only another spartan. A higher ranking one at that
"Calm yourself brother, we are friends not enemy."
Shane looked around and saw at least a hundred more men around and behind him
"Who are you?" Shane asked
"We were coming from up the road. I am from a nearby camp. We heard the shots and ran over as fast as we could"
The man lifts Shane up to his feet
"What were you doing out here?" He ask
Shane looks now at the bodies of men he was with being lined up on the road
"We were patrolling the woods for grimm when we got ambushed"
The man looks at him
"I see well, we will help you with your dead back to the city."
Shane gives him a nod
"Thank you"
The man looks at Shane
"Did you know them?"
Shane shakes his head
"N-no… I hadn't the honor of asking of their names"
Shane then awakes in his bed. He stares at the celling for awhile letting his eyes adjust to the darkness before sitting up and looking at the time. He awoke around seven this time.
Its been a couple of weeks since the start of this school and Shane is still having his reoccurring nightmares.
As he gets dressed he contemplates his dreams. He keeps having them. The nightmares of his past.
He shakes his head doing his best to forget them.
When he gets dressed he walks out of his room and to his surprise Pyrrha was in the hall walking in his direction. She stops when she sees and and offers a smile
Shane and Pyrrha being the first to awake form their teams every morning have bumped into each other every now and then going to breakfast.
Its more of a habit of the two now and Shane has learned to enjoy the company of her now it being a welcoming distraction to his dreams
"I was just about to come and see if you were awake."
He looks at her and gives her a smile in return
"And me the same. Seeing as its just you again I can only assume my team isn't ready"
She nods
"Yes, one could assume"
"Well then, will you join me for breakfast again Pyrrha?"
"Yes please, Im starving"
Shane laughs
"Yes me too, I didn't eat dinner"
They both enjoy breakfast with Shane having his plate loaded with just bacon this time and five cups of orange juice.
"So Shane, I have a curious question" Pyrrha ask
He raises and eyebrow hinting for her to ask
"How come you don't wear your cape with your uniform like Ruby? And why not as long either?"
Shane swallows his food and replies
"Well, I find myself looking quite the fool wearing my cape and no armor, and the length? Ruby's situation with the bird at the cliffs is my reasoning"
Pyrrha nods as she digs into her omelet
"Okay my turn"
He waits for her to finish chewing
Shane looks at her with a serious face
"Why don't you wear a cape, like one on your shoulders instead of your hip?"
Pyrrha laughs and takes a moment to recover
"What? It's a honest question" He says as to defend himself
"Im sorry, I just… wasn't expecting that sort of question from you."
The both share a laugh until Shane ask again
"But really did you even think about wearing one?"
Pyrrha shakes her head
"Well I did one time, but my family just made fun of me too much I never did it again so I just went with the one around my waist. I find it suit me better"
She smiled as she shared her memory
"I see, well if you ever reconsider you have me and Ruby's help Im sure"
She giggles
"That is very kind of you Shane"
Without much of any more conversation they both head back to their rooms, but this time Shane heads to the RWBY dorm and knocks on the door.
He hears the yelling of what he thinks is Yang and Weiss when a black haired girl answers the door.
It was Blake and she just kind of stares at Shane for a moment as he looks past her seeing Yang throwing something at Weiss and yelling about hair brushes
Blake clears her throat and regains Shanes attention and he looks down at her
"Sorry, I was just coming by to see if you guys were ready for class"
Blake looks back at her team with Ruby now joining the fray
"Give us a minute to sort that out, Weiss misplaces Yang's favorite hair brush and now shes kind of angry. We will be out shortly"
Shane gives a nod as she closes the door and after a short while the door opens with all of team RWBY filling out
Shane raises an eyebrow at Ruby and she just meekly chuckles
Shane chooses not to investigate and gets on with the day
"Well, at least you guys are out of the room on time today. Ruby what is our first calls of the day?" Shane ask
"Oh! It's combat class with Ms Goodwitch"
"Ohhhh finally! I get to bust some head!" Yang shouts as they walk down the hall
"Yeah, that's is way better than listening to another story from Professor Port " Blake joked
"Maybe this time I can finally get put with someone who is a challenge" Shane comments
They all walk down the hall and makes a couple of turns until they finally reach the room.
It was more like an arena than a class room with a big fighting floor at the bottom with rows of seats over looking it. The walked in seeing the rows somewhat filled up and with Ms Goodwitch at the bottom standing in the center
"Good morning students, now pick your sets up top and what for class to start"
They do so but as the pass Ms Goodwitch looks a Shane
He quickly gives a nod and a thumbs up
They talked after Shane met her in the hallway weeks back and Shane told her he was giving this school another chance
She doesn't nod in return but instead just watch his team take their seats.
"Ohhh I hope I get to fight today! Yesterday was sooo boring. Im getting sick of only looking at books everyday" Yang says
"Book can be good for you and teach you alot" Blake responds
"Yeah right, a book never taught me how to fight"
Blake just rolls her eyes and focuses on Ms Goodwitch as she starts to talk
Shane as usual tunes out only listing in for the important parts.
After a while of talking the class she sets up the stage
She pushes some buttons on her scroll and two random students pop up on the screen over looking the arena
It was no one Shane knew but they were instructed to go get their gear and be ready to battle. After a while they both returned.
They both battled, not being anything too special but both giving Ms Goodwitch flaws to point out and to give examples to the class.
After a while and some fights later two boys did spin up on the screen that Shane both knew. It was the trouble maker Cardin and the blond knight Jaune.
Shane looked to he left were team JNPR sat and saw Jaune looking nervous as Pyrrha gave him a encouraging pat on the back sending him off to get his gear.
As Cardin walked out into the platform Shane could now see his gear. For Jaune being a shield user Cardin's huge mace could provide a challenge if he has the strength and skill to use it.
As they both meet and the fight starts Shane is absolutely surprised.
Not only is Jaune just a joke of a fighter but the guy isn't even using his shield properly or to his advantage. He might as well as just went out there only just using his sword.
The fight was clearly one sided and Jaune rather brave but pathetic last charge was his end. Cardin finished him and diminished his aura without even getting a scratch on him.
Ms Goodwitch ended the fight and pointed this out to the class and too Jaune as well his flaws and to keep an eye on you aura
Shane never really watched the boy fight but the one day he did he wished he hadn't.
Shane knew Cardin was a bastard and he bullied Jaune. He had wished Jaune might actually show him up and beat the boy down but, that of course didn't happen.
The class ended and everyone walked out. It was lunch time and team JNPR and RWBYS ate together almost every time.
When they got to the dining hall, they got their food and sat down at a table. Norah started telling some wild story about her dream.
Shane had heard it before with this being about the fourth time of her telling it with slight alterations every time.
Shane and the rest of team JNPR were not exactly friends but with him hanging out with Pyrrha every morning he sometimes ate with Norah and her friend Ren as well.
He made up to them about when he insulted them after the initiation and apologized. Eventually they came to a small friendship to which Shane would put up with them and mainly Norah's excessive talking.
He found that he liked the girls brute strength with her hammer and he liked Ren's zen like nature when he fought and saw he could actually learn from the two.
While Norah went on with her story with team RWBYS listing in, well besides Blake and Weiss. Blake was reading a book and Weiss was busy filling her nails.
Ren would chime in correcting Norah's story as the man must of heard it over a thousand times now.
Shane was sitting to the far right of his team when Pyrrha looked over and saw Jaune disconnecting himself from the group. He was just picking at his food obviously troubled by something. Ruby looked and saw this too.
Pyrrha eventually asked him if something was wrong and Jaune snapped out of whatever he was thinking
"Huh, oh yeah.. why?" he asked
"Its just you seem a little… not okay" Ruby chimed in
"Guys I'm fine seriously, look" He gives a thumbs up with smile
He looks over a to the table next to them with Cardins laugh being heard. Him and his team were around a lone rabbit faunus girl.
"Jaune Cardin has been picking on you since the beginning week of school" Pyrrha states
"What? Cardin Winchester? He just likes to mess around, practical jokes."
"He's a bully" Ruby says
"And also a damn thief" Shane chimes in
"Oh please guys, name one time he bullied me" Jaune says
"He slapped your books from your hands in the hallway" Ren says
"I saw him activate your shield while you were walking through a doorway" Weiss also adds in
"And the time he pushed you into a locker and launched you off campus" Pyrrha says
"Wait what? He did that?" Shane ask
Jaune just shakes his head
"I didn't land far from the school"
"Jaune you know if you ever need help you can just ask" Pyrrha says
Norah shoots up
"Oh! Well break his legs!"
"Now that I can arrange" Shane says getting looks from his whole team
"Im jesting, I would never" They just shake their heads looking back a Jaune
Shane shoots Norah a nod mouthing the words "I will help" getting a giggle from her
Jaune stands up with his tray having not eaten a thing
"Guys really its fine, besides its not like he's only a jerk to me. He's a jerk to everyone."
With that being said the rabbit girl can be heard
"Ow that hurts!" With one of her eyes being jerked on by Cardin and his whole team just laughing
Shane stands up as he watches the whole situation unfold in front of him. He's had enough of this degenerate and his team bully the poor rabbit girl who doesn't even defend herself.
Two things right in front of the spartan that piss him off more than anything. Weakness and degenerate. You couldn't have ask for more of potent combination to set the spartan off.
He then looks at both team RWBY and JNPR
"If none of you will handle this, then I will"
He goes to walk around then table and confront them but Weiss stops him
"Shane no. You cant just start a fight in the middle of the cafeteria"
Shane doesn't even look at her as he continuous walking
"There will be no fight. Only a culling so to speak."
Her and the rest of the table were puzzled by what he meant by that.
Shane walk up past the faunus girl right up to Cardin who was still sitting down.
Cardin snaps out of his laughter and looks up at him
"Huh? What do you want?"
Shane activated his semblance as he quickly brought his right knee up crashing into Cardin's jaw causing him to let go of the girls ear and fall to the ground at the same time.
Shane quickly looks back at the faunus girl as she tries to walk away
"Gods be damned if you walk away coward! Watch and see what you can accomplish if you stand up for yourself."
He then turns to see all three of Cardin's teammates hopping and sliding over the table. The green haired one jumps off and tries to land a flying punch on Shane.
Shane grabs to boy's arm and flings him into teams RWBY and JNPR's table using his momentum against him.
The force of the impact greatly damaged his aura as Shane could see a weakening shimmer upon the impact.
Out of the corner of his eye Shane can now see the gray haired boy is throwing a punch at Shane. Shane quickly dodges right narrowly avoiding the guys blow.
Shane grabs his arm and before the guy can jerk it away Shane plants a foot into his stomach sending him flying into his teammate behind him knocking them both down.
Just as Shane thought he had dealt with all of them the green haired boy was back for more now jumping on to Shane's back locking him into a chokehold.
Locking his legs around Shane's waist so he couldn't just throw him off.
Shane tried his best at grabbing at his legs or arms trying to throw him off but it was no use so quickly Shane formulated a plan.
He activates his semblance and jumps up, landing on his back and practically crushing the guy.
Shane was almost certain he heard something pop when he landed on him.
As Shane stood up as the last remaining member that hasn't actually been hit, the blond haired boy was charging at Shane.
The boy throws a wild left punch causing Shane to throw up his arms to quickly block. Shane feints with a kick to his stomach causing the boy to throw his hands down to block but as he does Shane lands a swift right punch onto his jaw knocking him out cold.
With the whole team now dealt with Shane takes a moment to breath and look around. A crowed surrounded him all with their scrolls out recording.
He ignores them and looks down at Cardin who was struggling to get up. He walks over and bends down grabbing him by his hair lifting him up to see the girl
Shane then smashes his face into the ground a good four times completely breaking his aura and his noes causing blood to profusely leak out.
He lifts him up again to the girl Shane looking at her while pointing to Cardin
"See this? If you would have done this and not me I could guarantee he would never mess with you or another faunus again. Now…." Shane lets go of Cardin's hair causing him to faceplant into the ground and stands up to meet the girl "If I ever catch you letting someone do that to you again, you will receive far worse than what they have."
The girl just stands their almost frozen
"DO. I. MAKE. MYSELF. CLEAR?"
She shakes her head and Shane smiles
"Good, now go along and take care of whatever business you need to"
She quickly backs off and trots out of the dinning hall.
Shane was about to walk over and sit back down at his table when he hears a yell
"You fucking bastard! I'll kill you!"
Shane turns to see the gray haired boy barely standing up but now he was holding a small steak knife. He probably was using it before Shane ruined their day.
He charges at Shane with the knife raised making it easily availably for Shane to counter but right before he reaches him a purple like matter glows around him causing him to stop dead in his tracks
Shane then hears a very stern and pissed off feminine voice speak
"What in the world is going on here?"
Shane turns to see none other than Ms Goodwitch and as he does she lays eyes on him too
"Mr Moon. Why am I not surprised?"
He was about to say something but as he does whatever Ms Goodwitch was using on the other guy she quickly used on him moving them far away from each other. Before Shane could even voice his distain for her doing that she cuts him off yet again
"Mr Moon I don't know what caused you to think this type of behavior is acceptable, but you will be explaining yourself to myself and Ozpin later today" She then turns to see Cardin's bloodied face on the floor and looks back at Shane
He simply shrugs
"He will be fine. I've suffered worse at half the age." He says nonchalantly
Ms Goodwitch was kind of taken back by what he meant by that but was still quickly overwhelmed with anger. She pulls out her scroll and can only assume calls some sort of doctor to come get the students. She then turns and faces almost the entire dinning hall recording the whole thing.
"Students, you will delete anything you have recorded or it will be automatically wiped. Also everyone head to class now and leave the cafeteria."
She walks over to check on Cardin as Shane walks off to team RWBY and JNPR
They all just look at him almost blankly. Jaune more than anyone.
Shane looks at him
"The same thing I said to the girl applies to you too."
He only nods before Norah erupts
"Shane! That was amazing! I mean besides bashing Cardin's face in into a bloody pulp, you totally just took at their whole team like it was nothing!"
Shane has a small smile
"Weren't you the one that wanted to break his legs?"
She looks at him for a second before she remembers she did in fact say that
"Oh yeah! Well at least we can still do that too!"
She is cut off
"Students! To your classes now."
It was Ms Goodwitch getting on to them and anyone else still their
Ruby cuts in
"Alright gang, that's our que."
If anyone else wanted to say something to Shane they didn't. It wasn't that they were afraid of him but it was the fact that Ms Goodwitch was still within earshot distance and that everyone else was around too.
They would just have to wait until they had privacy.
As they all walk to their next class as group of four staff workers dress in white medical uniforms walk past them
