I pause at the top of the fence to take a deep breath and pray for patience. I notice movement in the woods and jump down without even bothering to climb down a few feet. I use my magic to cushion the ground slightly even as I start to walk off the momentum. Luckily, Luna has stopped in order to capture something on the ground, probably whatever creature caused her to climb the fence. Looks like I was going to have to talk us out of trouble again. At least I had plenty of experience. I casually hand Luna a carrying habitat that was similar to the area around us, and focus on my breathing and the area around us.
Five men carrying guns move out of the woods, and I quickly revised the story I was gonna give. Sometimes I swear that I should use a child leash, but those things become a hindrance when it's Potter luck that gets us into the mess. Judging by appearances, it's a combination that got us into the mess this time.
"Hello there. Are you aware that you're on private property?" A tall, blonde man asked
I look to the sky as if asking for patience my entire posture showing exasperation before glancing down at Luna, and running a hand through my hair. "Yeah, sorry about that. I love her dearly, but… She often forgets that she can't just climb random fences. If I could I'd use a leash to keep her out of trouble, but I think she'd strangle me with it." I gave another annoyed sigh, "I stopped for a second to tie my shoe and when I look up she's already jumping down the other side of the fence."
The men have looks of shared pain on their faces. However I could tell that we weren't going to get out of trouble that easily. My silver tongue had failed us. If I knew how Luna's new specimen would handle disaperation I'd have us out of here before they could bring their guns up, but Luna would kill me if I chanced harming one of her creatures.
Luna looks up having finished dealing with the specimen and she immediately gasps. I follow her line of sight to the smallest of the men. She is on her feet in a second ready to launch herself at him, but I grab her shoulder to stop her when all the others raise their guns. Luna is practically bouncing up and down. I think the only thing stopping her is my hand holding her in place. I can feel her magic twirling out from her reaching out for the guy and I understand. He is hers, the one she has been seeing in her dreams.
As she is clearly too excited to say anything I'm clearly gonna have to do the talking. Focusing my eyes on my little sister's mate I say "So… you must be Keelan." All their eyes snap towards me, so I shrug, "She told me she was dreaming of some guy named Keelan, and so we had to come to America. As we don't know, anyone the only reason she would be like this is if you were the dude in your dreams." I pause for dramatic effect, "Or you could have an infestation of Belzabees." At their confused looks I explain. "Belzabees are about an inch long, they look like wasps except for being all green instead of yellow. The female lays her eggs inside the ears of the host and when the babies hatch they crawl their way into the host's brain where they then consume the brain before leaving the host in order to find a new host."
Luna finally manages to find her calm for a second, "Don't be silly Harry. Belzabees only mate during the first full moon of winter every other leap year."
"But their eggs take nearly two years to hatch, and they consume their host slowly only emerging on Leap Day in order to search for a suitable mate." I could see that the men were equal parts amused and worried, so I turned my attention back to them, "Don't worry Belzabees prefer to take hosts who are at the end of their lives, and the process of consuming their brains mirrors that of dementia."
Luna smiled brightly and slipped out of my grip and skips over to the guy at a more sedate pace. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't what happened. As soon as she got over there, she licked his nose. To be fair it is Luna, so I'm not completely surprised, but there still. I lean down and pick the jar up from its place on the ground and am immediately surprised by what is inside. It was very small, only about the size of a large beetle, but mammalian in shape. It was a vivid violet color that beautifully set off the bright gold of its horns. The entire creature looked as if it had been crunched up and tossed. It also suddenly made sense why she had been unable to find it when she searched Sweden for it with her father. They had been looking for something the size of an Erumpent when it could either change sizes or was not as large as they thought. After long last she had found the elusive Crumple Horned Snorkack. I studied the adorable little thing for a second "You look like a Rowan to me." I say quietly to it. With that I conjure a name plate for the side of the lid that says 'Rowan Lovegood-Potter'. With a nod I carry my precious Snorkack over to Luna. She scowls and taps the nametag adding the middle name of 'Quincy'. I smile at her. "We shall share custody. You can have him on weekends, and every other holiday."
She stuck her tongue out at me and said "We live together."
I responded by cuddling the jar closer. "Mine."
The men shared a look "At least things will be interesting."
