Want for Nothing

"Where are we going, Daddy?" Rose asked, her short little legs pumping to keep up with her father's long strides.

"To Gringotts, Rosie," Ron said, struggling to contain the joy in his voice. "To see all the gold you have."

"Gold?" Rose frowned.

"Yes. We've been saving it for you. There's a lot."

Rose still seemed to have no idea why her father was so excited about the prospect of gold, but she followed him through Diagon Alley, not even stopping to peer through the window of her uncle's joke shop.

When they reached the bank, Rose stopped out the front, staring up at the giant building in part awe, part terror.

"It's okay, Rosie," Ron said gently. He offered his hand to her, which she accepted. Together, they walked into the giant building. Rose squeezed tightly at the sight.

Goblins.

She had known they were there, of course. She had seen pictures. But to see one in real life…

"They're so ugly, Daddy."

Ron turned a deep red as heads - human and goblin - turned to them.

Ron grinned. "My precious daughter," he said with a slight laugh. Then, lowering his voice, he added, "Rosie, just… keep your voice down in here. Please."

"Sorry, Daddy."

Rose gripped his hand and held tightly as they made their way to a spare bench. There was a nasty looking goblin manning it. She peered down at them.

"Ah, Mr Weasley. What a pleasant surprise."

Ron passed the key to her. "To our vault!" he said.

The goblin nodded and gestured to an even uglier goblin by the door. "Borix will accompany you, Mr Weasley."

Heads were now starting to turn for other reasons. Apparently - or so Ron had heard - it was a joy for people to spot him, Hermione or Harry out in public. One would think the novelty would have worn off - especially when they were spotted with their kids - but it wasn't so. Thankfully, no one was game enough to actually approach him.

"Everyone is staring," Rose said fearfully.

"Let's go, Rosie. We won't be long." He ushered her over to the goblin, who then ushered them both through the door to the vaults. On the other side, Rose stopped dead. Her eyes gazed up at the large doors already present.

"Keep going, sweetheart," Ron encouraged. "This isn't ours." He took her hand - a little more firmly this time - as they followed the goblin through the labyrinth of vaults. The further they got, the more Rose relaxed.

It took some time, but they eventually stopped out the front of a plain door with a single lock on the outside. It looked easy to get into, but anyone who attempted to break in would be in for a very rude shock; all thanks to his brilliant wife, of course.

"What's inside, Daddy?" Rose asked, watching as Ron took out his wand to remove the enchantments surrounding the door. Once done, the goblin placed the key in the lock.

"Gold," Ron said. "Lots of it."

"Gold…" Rose repeated, still appearing confused.

The door swung open, revealing a substantial amount of Galleons, placed in neat piles along the shelves. It had taken years to get to that stage, and a lot of hard work, but Ron was proud of what they had managed. It was more gold than his own family had seen in their lifetime. And it was all for their children to have whatever they wanted.

He looked to his daughter, thinking he would see excitement, delight, on her face. But she didn't seem to react at all. He couldn't help the mild disappointment that came over him. Why wasn't she excited?

"There's a lot," she said, matter-of-factly.

"There sure is," Ron said, grinning. "All for you and Hugo."

"Now?"

"Not now, no. But for later. When you're older. But I think we can take a little bit out now. To buy you something special."

"Okay."

"You don't want anything, Rosie?" he asked.

Rose shrugged. "A new toy, maybe. I guess."

"You guess?"

Rose nodded. "It was my birthday last week, Daddy. I got lots of presents. I got lots of new toys. I got everything I asked for."

"Oh." The disappointment in Ron grew. "Well, I realise that, but -"

"Can we get ice-cream, Daddy?"

"Um… sure."

Rose smiled up at him, this time being the one to offer her hand. He accepted, though they left without taking a single coin from the vault. He just couldn't understand why Rose had not been excited about the money. Him, in her shoes, would have taken all he could carry and bought everything he wanted. What six-year-old wouldn't?

Well, Rosie, he supposed.

It wasn't until they were sitting in the ice-cream parlour, Rose licking her Starlight Sugarcube ice-cream, did it come to him.

From the moment he had held Rose in his arms, it had been his life mission to make sure she never wanted for anything. He didn't want his children having hand-me-downs as he had. Everything they would own would be theirs, and theirs only.

And he had followed through with that.

That was why Rose had not been excited about it. That was why she had just wanted ice-cream when he had offered her anything she wanted.

She already had everything she wanted, because he'd made sure of it.

His Rosie really did want for nothing. Just like he had always wanted.

A big thank you to Resa (halfravenhalfclaw) my lovely Chudley Cannons teammate for beta-ing this for me. I hope you all enjoyed reading this!
