Ch 10
Teaspoon walked over to Rachel's the next morning. He knocked on the door and walked inside as she opened it.
"They all set?" Asked Rachel.
"Yeah, almost ready. I needed to talk with Jimmy and Louise. I just want them to be aware of what is going on."
"Sure, Cody and I moved them into the same room yesterday. Figured they could keep each other company. Come on. Teaspoon, do you think this is the best way to handle all this? I just couldn't sleep last night for worrying about it."
"This is the only way I know to keep everyone safe. They shouldn't have a clue that it is here. Cody and Ike will be here with y'all until they get back."
"Kid was upset about going."
"He has to. I can't let Ike go what with all that has been going on. It weren't safe for him. Kid understands."
Rachel nodded and walked over with Teaspoon. Lou was propped up reading one of Cody's books while Jimmy was sleeping.
"Louise, you're looking better today."
"Hey Teaspoon. Yeah it hurts but not so bad as long as I try not to move it. Sides Doc gave me something to ease the pain." She smiled.
Teaspoon walked over and shook Jimmy.
"Hickok, wake up. I got to talk to ya."
Jimmy swatted at Teaspoon and groaned. He cracked his eyes open. He saw Teaspoon smiling in his face. Rachel walked over and helped him sit up in the bed. He grimaced as he pulled himself up.
"Jimmy, I hate to wake ya up but this is important."
"It's ok. What's going on?"
Teaspoon filled both of them in on the plan and the payload that was sure to be heading their way.
"So, we have to hide it here." Said Jimmy.
"Yes. I'm gonna put it in Rachel's cellar. Lock it up tight and hide the key. It will only be here two days before we move it along. The army will take delivery then."
"What if they figure it out? Kid and Buck could be killed." Said Lou.
"No one knows but me and the Lieutenant. We will be extra careful but it should be fine."
They all jumped as the door opened. Ike stepped in and saw them in deep conversation. He turned to leave.
"Ike, it's ok. Was just telling them what was going on. You can stay."
Ike nodded and moved to the corner.
"And you plan on hiding the keys?" Asked Jimmy.
"I do. Figured if they got me then they couldn't get the keys. That's where you come into play."
"Me?"
"Yep. You."
"Teaspoon, I can't hardly get up much less help."
"Sure ya can. You are going to hide the keys."
"He is?" Rachel and Lou asked at the same time.
"Who would ever think to look on the sick who can't defend himself for a set of keys."
"I guess no one."
"My thoughts exactly. I'm going to lock it up tight then I'm gonna wrap the keys in your bandage. Not a soul will look there."
"What if they do Teaspoon, you can't be serious?" Asked Rachel concerned.
"I am dead serious." Teaspoon said as he pulled Jimmy's guns from the back of his waistband.
"Reckon it makes sense." Jimmy said as Teaspoon stood and held his guns out.
"Of course it does."
Jimmy reached and took his guns. He slid one under his pillow and the other under the blanket. Lou watched from her bed.
"When do Kid and Buck leave?"
"In just a few."
"Tell him, I'd like to see him before he leaves."
"I don't have to. He will be over in a few."
Lou nodded as Teaspoon stood to leave. He tipped his hat at them and walked out. Ike stood and followed him. Buck was finishing his horse as Kid ran over to see Lou before he left. Cody was over next to Buck double checking everything. Teaspoon and Ike walked up.
"Ready for this?"
"I think so. We should have all we need. I think we'll ride straight. Stay the night there and try to head straight back."
"Stay off the main trail. The wagon will be going that way."
"Don't worry. No one knows the way we are going."
"Perfect."
Kid walked out the house and to Katy. Buck and Kid mounted up.
"Ride fast and ride safe boys. See you in a few days. I'll be here waiting."
Kid and Buck nodded as they spurred their horses out onto the plains.
