The Thumb Goes On the Outside

There was a lot of screaming, which made it hard for Ginny to figure out why all her brothers were there. Was Percy following the commotion because he was trying to tell the twins to stop, or was he impressed that Fred and George were actually using underage magic to lift Ginny up by the ankle and dangle her above the ground? Was Charlie worried about her, worried about the twins getting in trouble, or worried about the old Grindylow that lived in the pond that the twins were threatening to drop her in? She was pretty sure that Ron was just curious about how this would all turn out, but Ginny was also screaming so it was hard to tell.

Her heart was beating in her throat as they actually dangled her so low that the tip of her hair was brushing the pond's surface. Charlie had once told her that it was rare for Grindylows to eat people, but it definitely happened if you were unlucky enough. Ginny figured the odds weren't in her favour if she was unlucky enough to have all these stupid idiot brothers, so she screamed even louder until she heard a new voice say: "Seriously? Knock it off!"

She could easily have fallen into the pond, but she heard Bill say: "Accio Ginny!" Just like that, she wasn't dangling in thin air anymore, she was in Bill's arms. He put her down.

She turned towards the twins.

"I'm going to kill you!" Ginny shouted.

Fred and George jumped away, but Bill reacted the quickest. He grabbed her by the waist and sunk his heels into the ground as she wrestled against him.

"Get out of here!" Bill told the rest of the boys, who scattered. She wrestled against Bill for a few more seconds and then, when her brothers were out of sight, she realized how scared she'd been and started crying.

Bill held Ginny as she caught her breath again and stroked her hair until she felt better. Then she was just mad at her brothers. Why were there so many of them? What had Mum and Dad been thinking?

"Look Ginny," Bill sighed. "I… I shouldn't be telling you this, but you're the littlest one so someone has to, and I'm about to go back to Hogwarts. When you fight back, try to hit someone on the nose or between the legs."

"Between the legs?" Ginny repeated.

"Only if you have to," Bill said. "But yeah, it really hurts. And if you're going to punch someone, don't put your thumb in your fist. You'll just hurt yourself. Keep your arms at the same height as your shoulders so that you punch strong, and pretend that you're punching through something not just at something so that it really hits. Got it?"

Ginny paused for a minute, processing.

"Got it," she said.

"Do you want to go practise on some bails of hay?" Bill asked.

"Yeah," Ginny said. Yeah, she'd love to punch something—and when she got around to Fred and George, she wanted it to be good.

He nodded, took her hand, and led her away.
