I threw this together yesterday because I realized I hadn't actually written anything for it.
This was a long awaited scene for me, because it's when everyone realizes Alice is an Unnatural.
Juliette really wants to make friends with Alice. Or at least make her not-hate her. Thing is Alice is still majorly creeped out by Juliette and her deadly touch, so when Juliette reaches to touch her things happen.
She had only meant to tap her on the shoulder.
Alice hadn't noticed her walking up to her and leaning down to peek at the cover of the book she was reading. It was in Swedish, so she hadn't understood. But maybe it was one she had read.
It had been days since they had realized that Juliette was able to touch other people without harming them, and she hoped that maybe, maybe she would be able to make amends with Alice.
Talking about books seemed like the logical option, considering how often Alice came into the gym to just sit around and read.
James had been able to start talking with her, and Kenji joined in sometimes, because Kenji didn't seem to be able to stay out of any conversation.
So, she had fidgeted for a moment, looked over her shoulder to meet eyes with Kenji (he gave her a thumbs up), then in a fit of courage reached out.
"Hey-"
Then things happened very quickly.
Alice had looked up. She had looked up and must have registered who it was who was about to reach for her.
Her eyes had been so wide.
Then
She was gone.
Juliette blinked.
Alice was gone.
Then she gasped in surprise as the book fell to the ground.
"W-wha-?"
Juliette blinked again. Had she blacked out? She didn't feel like anything was out of the ordinary, but she put a hand against the wall just in case and took a look around.
Then she had a second shock.
Alice was standing over by Warner. Actually, it looked like she was taking cover behind him as he was talking to Castle. He didn't seem to mind her, which was no surprise considering how close she usually kept to him or Delalieu.
She must have ran really fast to get all the way over there, Juliette thought. Or she had blacked out for way longer than she thought.
"Woah?!"
It was Kenji.
She thought he was exclaiming at her. But when she turned her head she saw that he was looking at Alice.
"What just happened?!", he demanded.
Everyone looked over, including Warner and Castle. Alice clung closer to Warner's side.
"What, Kenji?", Castle wondered.
Kenji looked flabbergasted.
"Didn't you see?!"
He pointed at Juliette.
"She went from there-"
He pointed at Warner.
"To there. Like:"
He snapped. Then pointed back and forth again for emphasis.
"Who did?", Castle asked patiently.
"She- Alice did!"
Everyone looked at the blonde girl still hiding behind Warner. Warner frowned and turned sideways to look at her. She was hiding her face against his jacket.
Kenji looked at Juliette for confirmation.
"You saw it too, right!?"
She nodded and picked up the book.
"I just…" She stopped herself, feeling embarrassed for admitting she had wanted to talk to Alice, despite everyone in the room knowing the girl's attitude to the lot of them. Still, everyone understood what she had been trying to do.
"Did you?" It was Warner.
"You're not in any trouble, my dear", Castle added. He was using his most coaxing voice.
Still Alice merely shrugged. Still with her face planted in the fabric of Warner's jacket.
"She did!", Kenji perked up.
Castle admonished him with a glance.
"Could it be…", he continued, lowering his voice.
"...that you didn't want miss Ferrars to touch you?"
Juliette tried not to feel bothered, but she did. She went over to Kenji as Castle and Warner continued to coax Alice into explaining. Warner managed to untangle himself from her and squatted down, trying to catch her chin so that she would look at him.
Warner POV
"Does this happen often? That you show up in one place to another?", Castle wondered.
She shrugged again.
"Alice, you can tell me", Warner said.
He was still trying to wrap his head around this.
Alice.
Alice without a past. Could it be that she had… an ability? But he hadn't noticed anything about her, not even after realizing he had an ability of his own.
Still it made sense in so many ways.
How she managed to sneak up on him time and time again. If her feet never touched the floor he obviously wouldn't hear her.
"I just forget while I'm walking sometimes", she mumbled suddenly.
"But it's not a big deal", she tried.
"But you get through locked doors", Warner said, realizing it in the same moment. His office that first day when he and Delalieu ran all over base to try and understand how she got inside.
He could feel a wave of intrigue in Castle. Still he focused on Alice who was slowly becoming more and more upset.
She was feeling cornered by them. She didn't understand this any better than they did.
"Teleportation", he said while turning his head to look at Castle for confirmation:
"Is that something you've come across before?"
"I'm not…!", Alice protested. Castle furrowed his brow.
"It really depends on how you define it, son. We've had a boy who could ran so fast he broke the sound barrier, but there was much more ruckus when he dashed around. I didn't even notice your Alice walk up to you. And traveling through doors, that's something I've never heard of…"
Then he put a finger against his lips gaining a twinkle in the eye.
"The physics alone must be out of this world…" He lost himself in thought.
"I can't teleport", Alice said to Warner, her voice was starting to break. Then she started to weep. Big tears rolled down her face.
"I just forget…!", she repeated.
"Especially when I… when I want to get away fast, then it's as if it's in no time at all. But I just forget." She was trying to convince herself he realized; but it was hard to look away from the evidence.
"I just didn't want her to touch me Aaron...", she whimpered.
And as much as it annoyed him that Alice kept on refusing acknowledging Juliette as a human being he brought his arms around her. He patted her back to try and make her calm down, but she just kept mumbling things. And her lungs were whistling.
Damn that Kishimoto who had to make a scene out of everything.
Warner and castle talk more about the potential of Alice's ability. They hypothesis that distance may not be an issue, it's only limited by energy. Warner realizes that Alice may have dashed all the way from Sweden to Sector 45, potentially by accident. And that the energy needed, combined with Alice's trauma, may have caused her to forget what happened. (I, as the author, realize in hindsight that it would make much more sense to have Alice being found unconscious somewhere in the first chapter, but whatever.)
Alice's ability as I imagine it: She breaks the laws of physics by deciding how fast she wants to go distances. This works both ways however, so if she wants to get away it's in an instant (So she basically teleports) and if she wants it to take five minutes to walk to school, it will take five minutes.
Her whole backstory is that (and this is going to sound incredibly far fetched but stay with me!) she did a velocity homework asking for how long it would take to walk to the US. She gets the comma wrong when converting and ends up with an answer saying 15.6 years. (I got the idea from making the same mistake when researching this concept) She receives a fail on the homework, and in a fit she wants to prove that she was right. It results in her actually going to sector 45 in the span of 15.6 years. (Don't ask why she isn't 27, she's already breaking the laws of physics, okay? (lol)) So she has missed out on all the natural disasters and RE taking over etc. She becomes sick in the lung plague because her immune system isn't up-do-date.
I don't think anyone suspected this kind of ability TBH. My little sister thought she was Warner's daughter from the future. I'm like: "No that's physically impossible! She's from the past :D"
Warner is going to figure this out in the next chapter, when he goes investigating.
