Ch 2

Cody took the buckboard out to Pam's house to pick her up for her date. He knocked on the door and shook hands with her father. He helped her into the wagon. They drove into town to the hotel restaurant to eat. Cody pulled her chair out and sat across from her smiling. He looked at the table behind her and there was Noah eating dinner. Cody frowned.

"Something wrong William?" Asked Pam.

"Oh, no ma'am. Not at all. You look absolutely stunning tonight Pam. I'm so happy to see you again."

"Do flatter me, William. I'm so glad that you asked."

Cody and Pam ordered and continued to eat. Cody was a bit distracted by Noah but he seemed to pay them no mind.

"I almost forgot. I bought a little something for you." Said Cody as he pulled out the little bag.

"You shouldn't have!"

Pam opened the bag and pulled out a small bottle of perfume. She smiled at Cody.

"I saw this in Thompkins and it smelled wonderful. I wanted you to have it because you are wonderful."

"William!" Pam said as she pulled the cork out the bottle.

Noah looked their way trying not to smile. Here we go.

Pam opened the bottle and took a long sniff. She pulled the bottle away and gagged. Cody looked shocked. Noah pulled his hat down to hide his smile.

"Is this some kind of joke, William? This is the most putrid thing I have ever smelled!" Exclaimed Pam as she put the bottle back on the table pushing it away from her.

"What? It's rose water. How could that smell..." Cody dropped off as he smelled the bottle. He pulled it away from his nose too fast and spilled the liquid on the table.

"William!" Yelped Pam as she jumped up.

Cody jumped up as well knocking the table over. All the food splattered on Pam's skirt. She looked around embarrassed.

"Pam, I'm so sorry! Let me help you!"

"Don't touch me William! Just take me home!"

Noah tipped his hat forward to hide his face as Cody held the door open for Pam to walk through. Noah stood and paid for his meal. He rode back to the station. Jimmy and Kid met him in the barn.

"Well? How did that turn out for him?" Asked Jimmy.

"Y'all should have seen her face. Then on top of that, he spilled it all over the table. He jumped up and dumped the table over on her!" Laughed Noah as Jimmy doubled over.

"That'll teach him!"

"You think we went too far?" Asked Kid still laughing though.

"I don't." Said Jimmy.

They all stopped as Buck walked into the barn. He saw the three standing around.

"I miss something?"

"Nothing, just talking. I'm turning in." Said Noah walking away.

Buck shrugged and went to check the lanterns. Jimmy walked away beside Kid.

"You better not rat us out either. And don't say a word to Lou." Whispered Jimmy.

They were on the porch when Cody came riding back in. He put the horse and buckboard away. He walked up the steps.

"How was your date Cody?" Asked Jimmy.

"It didn't quite go as planned."

"You mean it didn't work out for you?" He asked looking at Noah.

"No it didn't. I don't feel much like talking about it. Good night." Cody said as he fell on his bunk.

Jimmy cut his eyes over at Noah and Kid. They smiled to themselves as they went to sleep.
