Ch 14

Buck left Noah and rode back into town. Teaspoon was sitting in his office with his head in his hands. He heard the door close. He looked up to see Buck.

"Well?"

"He doesn't know anything. He said he remembers being at the dance and that's it. He doesn't even know how he got out to the valley."

"Noah stay?"

"Yeah, we got him cleaned up and some fresh clothes on him."

"Ya tell him?"

"We did. He ain't taking it too well. He doesn't understand how he could do it and not remember."

"We still don't know if he did. I know why he don't remember."

"Why?"

"Cody took it too far. Jesse came clean."

"What did he do?"

"Apparently, Cody had Jesse buy some medicine powder from Thompkins. Cody put something in his drink and Jesse was supposed to get his food. Only Jesse panicked and put too much. Claims Cody only wanted him to make an ass out of himself in front of the town but it took a turn for the worse."

"How are we gonna fix this?"

"Might not be able to if Jimmy killed those people."

"He couldn't have."

"He doesn't even know what he did. How can we?"

Kid and Lou were talking to people around town about the night before. Someone had to see something. They had been asking around for hours and nothing had turned up. Lou walked down the alley beside the saloon. She saw the town drunk, Larry, propped up against a barrel. Larry saw everything. He saw her and went to walk away.

"Larry! Hey!"

Larry didn't answer as he tried to run. Lou chased him out onto the street. Kid saw Lou running behind Larry so he stepped in front of him to cut him off. Larry bumped into Kid.

"Larry! Why are you runnin?! I just want to talk to you." Said Lou out of breath.

"Why would you want to talk to me?" Asked Larry nervous.

"Why are ya so jumpy, Larry?" Asked Kid.

"I ain't! I tell ya, I ain't!"

Kid looked at Lou as he pulled Larry to the jailhouse.

"Where we going?! I ain't done nothing wrong!" Yelled Larry.

Kid pushed him inside the door as Teaspoon stood. Lou closed the door behind her and blocked it so he couldn't run.

"Shut up! We just want to talk to ya!"

"What's going on Kid?" Asked Teaspoon.

"Lou went to ask him about last night and he ran."

"I didn't know she just wanted to talk."

"Larry, what did you see? It's important." Said Teaspoon.

"Nothing. I can't say!"

"So you saw something then."

"No! I didn't! He said he'd kill me!"

"Come clean, Larry. Ya got two minutes!"

"I saw your boy Hickok at the saloon!"

"And?"

"I saw him come out with another man that I didn't know. He was laughing. The man grabbed a hold of that young girl. He pushed her into the livery. The girl fought. Your boy grabbed his arm and fell in behind. I don't know nothing else!"

"Why did you say that he would kill you?"

"He knew I saw, he told me that if I opened my mouth that it would be the last time I ever did."

"What he look like?"

"Your height, short black hair. He had a slight beard. He was dressed all in black. He was missing two front teeth."

"Ok Larry, you can go."

Larry stumbled and ran outside. Teaspoon looked to Kid and Lou.

"Well now we got to find our missing link."
