A Squeal To A Little One Shot
10 Years Later
James Rodgers fidgeted nervously with his tie for what seemed the billionth time that evening, he blamed it on that nervous energy which he got every time he thought about her or saw her. They had been best friends for ten years and now he wasn't sure what they were two friends going to a dance. He was the perfect mix of his parent's blond hair and green eyes, smart, funny and loved languages especially Gaelic and Russian which he had been picking up from his parents. There was a knock on the door and his father walked in closely followed by his mother. "Hey Jamie, you nervous?" his father asked. "Steve leave him be, come on sweetie let's get some photo's of you" his mother said with a smile, James groaned as he saw the camera his mum was holding.
"No photo's you promised me" he whined.
"We want one honest just so we can remember this special evening" his mother said with promise in her eyes. That one photo turned into at least a dozen before they let him go and pick up his date.
…..
Morgan Stark stood in front of her full length mirror her mum had just finished doing her hair she smiled at her reflection. "Morgan come on let's go and show your father" her mum said. Morgan grabbed her jacket and bag and followed her mum into the main living room of Stark Tower. Tony looked his daughter up and down and frowned "nope your not wearing that go and change"
Morgan's mouth dropped open "you have got to be kidding me dad, this dress is perfectly fine and within regulations." Pepper sided with her daughter "Tony be reasonable, let her enjoy tonight, it's homecoming" Tony relented with a sigh and smiled at his daughter.
"You look stunning darling, come on let's get some picture's of you" Tony said raising the camera.
A few shot's later the lift dinged and Morgan smiled "I'll see you later guys"
Pepper looked at her daughter "No you don't we want a couple of photo's of you both before you disappear." James stepped out the lift and smiled at his best friend and date to the homecoming. Morgan's stomach lurched at his smile, he was just so charming and if she were to admit it but never would like his father in the old film reels she had seen at the museum.
"You treat my daughter right tonight young man and keep her safe" Tony said just as they were leaving.
"Yes sir" James said with a salute. He was never in a million years going to let Morgan Stark come to harm and Tony Stark knew that.
….
As they danced that night James felt knots in his stomach as he thought about the alternate motivative what if she rejected him would it affect their friendship he thought back to when he asked her to go with him he felt as though he had two left feet.
Flashback
He cursed under his breath for the thousandth time as he gripped his books why couldn't he just approach her he was the son of a super solider and spy for crying out loud he could do this. Why did girls have to travel in packs? He cautiously approached them and tapped Morgan on the shoulder. She turned and smiled at seeing her friend of ten years "Hey roger's"
"Hey Stark" he answered flashing her a smile which make her go weak at the knees "Can I talk to you for a minute about the family business"
"Sure" she answered they came up with the phrase family business as a way of talking about their parents work. They walked some distance away and stopped at the edge sports fields.
"Are our parents ok?" Morgan asked worried.
"They're fine I just wanted to ask you away from everyone else" he said he felt like his stomach was flipping pancakes "James are you alright?" concern laced her voice.
"Yeah" the nerves started up again nerves which had developed since he first started to like her. Morgan waited paitently for him to continue talking she found it sweet how flustered he got when he was nervous or unsure about something her dad said that before his parents got together that whenever some kind of 'modern' pun or reference was made then Steve would get all flustered.
Taking a deep breath he pulled out two tickets from his jacket pocket "so I picked these up from the office and was wondering if you would like to be my date to the dance" his green eyes danced with hope. Morgan's heart nearly skipped a beat when he said that and she flung her arms round him.
"Yes I would love too" her dark eyes lit up with delight.
…
"Hey James are you ok?" Morgan asked noticing that her chatty friend and date to the dance was being oddly quiet.
"Yeah it's just I've been thinking" he said
"Ooh that's a dangerous pastime" Morgan stated.
"Your not wrong but I don't want us to be just friends anymore" he said. Morgan stopped dancing and let go of his hand his words stung her like the lash of a whip. Then she turned and walked away, sighing James ran after her.
"Morgan wait listen" he called she paused at the entrance and turned.
"I get it James you're calling off our decade of friendship, the whole dance thing was a way of you trying to break it to me gently" she said wiping away her tears so they wouldn't smudge her makeup.
"No that's not what I meant listen to me" James said grabbing her hand "I don't want us to be friends anymore because I like you Morgan. I really like you, you're smart funny, beautiful, kind, talented. Your amazing and you know what I love you for that I don't care that your father is a billionaire you know that I love you for you Morgan" he stated he could feel his heart speeding like a freight train as Morgan stared at him "You like me?"
"No I love you" he corrected her "I asked you to come with me because I didn't know how else to ask you" he said.
"Ask me what?"
"Ask will you please be my girlfriend Morgan Evangeline Stark?" James asked his pulse racing. There was a silence between them as the words settled in.
"Yes all the way yes" she cried throwing her arms round his neck James gave her one of those charming grins and kissed her. There was a cough behind them and they saw a teacher standing there with a small smile "while as entertaining as this is Miss Stark and Mr Rogers and I'm sure that your parents will be delighted please refrain from PDA on school property" James gave the teacher a salute and looped his arm with Morgan's.
"Well then Miss Stark shall we go and dance the night is still young"
"Indeed I would love that Mr Rogers" she answered smiling and the pair walked back into the mix of lights music and confetti.
