The day Henry came home from the hospital was rainy and dreary. Kitty watched from the porch as the two ambulance workers rolled his wheelchair up the ramp. He looked at her like a starving dog would look at a T-bone steak.
"I've been far too long without the comfort of your beauty," he pouted. "Why didn't you visit?"
"I just couldn't stand to see you lying there helpless and in pain," she told him. "I was so worried about you I could hardly sleep at night. I prayed for your recovery every day. I was so happy when I found out you were finally coming home."
One of the attendants rolled the wheelchair into the house.
"Where to first?" he asked.
"The bedroom," Henry replied. "This kind of weather just makes me want to sleep."
The attendant rolled the wheelchair into the bedroom, where both attendants plus Kitty struggled to help Henry's massive frame into bed.
"Can I get you anything, sweetheart?" Kitty's high pitched voice trilled.
"A glass of white wine would be nice," Henry replied. "And put my favorite show on for me."
Kitty turned Netflix on and selected 'Borgias.'
"Perfect," said Henry. "Now, sit beside me and watch it with me."
Kitty slipped of her shoes and got into bed beside her husband. Henry lay his head back against the wall and was snoring within ten minutes. As soon as she was sure he was sound asleep, Kitty got out of bed, grabbed her cell phone, and made her way downstairs to the den. Once there, she settled into the incredibly comfortable sofa and called Tom.
"Hey, babe," she heard him say.
"Hey," she replied. "I just called to tell you he's home now, so we're gonna have to be super careful from now on."
"Aw, man!" Tom groaned.
"I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do," said Kitty. "You know he made me sign a prenup before we got married, so if he ever found out about us, I'd be out the door with nothing but what I came here with."
"Yeah. Kinda sucks, huh?"
"Big time. Listen, I gotta get back. I left him asleep in the bedroom, but you never know when he might wake up."
"OK. Take care, babe."
"Thanks, you too."
"I can't wait to tell her," said Louis. He and Anne stood hand in hand at the airport, waiting for Reese's flight to come in.
"Neither can I. I hope she's happy about the news."
"Why wouldn't she be? She loves you, Anne."
"Do you really think she does?"
"I know she does!"
"Some little kids are still hoping their parents are gonna get back together."
"Reese was so young when Marie and I separated, I doubt she remembers much about our marriage."
At last they saw her in her hot pink coat and purple sweat pants. She grinned as she ran into her father's arms.
"Daddy!"
"I'm so glad to see you again!" Louis cried as he held her tight. "Look who I brought with me!"
Reese looked at Anne. "Hi, Anne!"
"Hi, sweetheart," said Anne.
"Can I play with Katie again?" asked Reese.
"I'm sure we can arrange a play date soon," Anne told her.
"Good! I like Katie. She's nice," said Reese.
"How do you like pre-K?" asked Louis.
"It's fun!" Reese told him. "We're learning the letters of the alphabet. Last week, we learned 'G', and Brennan brought his Grandpa to school."
"Really?" Louis laughed. "Well, I wish I could have been there during 'D' for 'Daddy' week."
"Me too, Daddy!"
"We have a surprise for you," Louis told his daughter as they walked back out to the car. "Anne and I are getting next week, and we want you to be the flower girl!"
Reese frowned. "What's a flower girl?"
"You walk down the aisle sprinkling flower petals," Louis explained.
"Yay! I love flowers!"
Louis drove to Pepperoni Pete's Pizza Parlor. He ordered salad for himself and Anne and pizza for all three of them. He bought tokens for Reese and let her ride the indoor Ferris wheel.
"She's grown so much since the last time I saw her," Louis observed as he and Anne watched Reese go around and around. "I feel like I'm missing so much of her life."
"At least you get to celebrate Christmas with her," Anne pointed out.
"I know, but somehow, it just doesn't seem like enough," Louis replied.
Later, the three of them played skee ball and were having so much fun they were shocked when a voice announced over the loud speaker that the restaurant would be closing in fifteen minutes.
Louis had taken Anne home and was carrying a sleeping Reese into his own house when he noticed the light blinking on his answering machine. He pushed the playback button and heard his mother's voice.
"Hello, Louis. I'm calling to let you know Terri went into labor this evening, and Charlie drove her to the hospital. Elisabeth and I are here with him. The doctor said the baby will probably be born sometime after midnight."
The following morning, Anne was eating breakfast when Louis called her.
"Guess what!" he cried. "Terri went into labor last night. I'll have a new niece or nephew soon! He or she might have even already been born!"
"Wow, that's great!" Anne enthused.
"I'm going to the hospital just as soon as I get off work this evening," Louis continued. "I want to get there as soon as I can. Can you meet me there?"
"Of course I can!" Anne replied.
"Did Reese get in all right yesterday evening?" Anna asked her when she went in to work.
"Yes, and Louis's sister-in-law went into labor while we were picking her up," Anne replied. "I'm meeting Louis at the hospital after work."
Anna smiled. "That is exciting news!"
