Kathy heard the doorbell and looked through the peephole to see Tommy standing there. She opened the door slightly but left the chain lock in place.

"Go away!" she yelled.

"Not until you tell me what's going on," Tommy replied. "You won't answer the phone or reply to my texts. What's wrong?"

"You're really good at pretending you don't know!" Kathy shot back.

"I have no idea what you're talking about!"

"It might have something to do with that slut you were seen with in Brennan's." Her voice was as cold as ice.

"I've never even been to Brennan's!" he protested.

"Liar!" she screamed. She slammed the door shut and did the deadbolt, and he turned and walked away, shaking his head in confusion.

"The bitch is gone! Woot, woot!" Mary did a victory dance for the benefit of Philip, who was watching from Germany on Skype.

"I don't believe it!" he said. "They were just married last summer, and he seemed quite besotted with her then."

"He caught her having an affair with Tom Culpepper," Mary told him.

"I see." Considering the age difference between Henry and Kitty, Philip wasn't really surprised, but of course, he'd never say that to Mary.

"I'm so glad!" Mary continued. "I hated that woman!"

Philip chuckled. "I know you did, and I thought you were also still pretty upset with your father for how he treated your mother."

"I am," Mary replied. "I'm glad Kitty cheated on him. It gave him a taste of his own medicine, but I do feel sorry for Edward. He's lost another mother now."

"Poor little tyke," Philip agreed.

"I'm sure my Dad will find someone else soon," said Mary. "I just hope she's much nicer. How's law school going?"

"It's a real challenge. Much more difficult that I anticipated, but at the same time, rewarding as well."

"Are you still coming for the summer?"

"I sure am!"

"I miss you so much, Philip."

"I miss you too, sweetheart. It won't be much longer before we're together again."

"I can hardly wait!"

"Guess what!" Kitty said to Anne at the dinner table one evening. "I got the job!"

"I'm so glad," Anne replied. "When do you start?"

"Next Tuesday. It's only part time to start. If they like me, they'll give me more hours later on."

"Well, I hope it works out for you."

"Thanks."

"What will you be doing?" asked Louis.

"Selling shoes," Kitty told him.

"It's at that new shoe store that just opened up near the mall," Anne added.

"I see." Louis shoveled a huge fork full of salad into his mouth.

"I can't wait to start helping those little kiddies try on shoes!" Kitty enthused.

"You like kids, don't you?" asked Anne.

"Yeah, I really miss Edward."

Anne gave a deep sigh as she thought of her miscarriage.

"What's wrong?" asked Kitty.

"Never mind."

George and Elisabeth were going for a leisurely stroll in the park when Elisabeth spied a leaf with a caterpillar crawling on it and took out her sketchbook.

"I want to draw it right now, before I forget what it looks like," she explained to George, who looked on in amusement.

"You always live in the moment," he replied. "It's one of the many things I love about you."

Unsure how to respond, she blushed and looked down. George cleared his throat and then continued.

"Listen, Elisabeth. We've been going out for some time now and, um, well - " He inhaled deeply. It's now or never, he told himself. "What I'm trying to say is, I've come to love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you." He dropped to one knee. "Will you marry me?"

Elisabeth smiled as she took his hand and raised him to his feet. "I love you too, George, but you aren't Catholic. If I am to marry, my husband must believe as I do."

"I can convert!" said George.

"It has to be something you really want to do," Elisabeth replied. "You must take classes in preparation for confirmation, and you have to have a sponsor." Her brow wrinkled. "Perhaps my mother will agree to be your sponsor."

"That would be fine with me," George replied. "I'll do whatever it takes to win your hand, my love."

Elisabeth smiled and embraced him.

Kitty was fitting a young boy for a new pair of sneakers when she heard the door make a jingling noise and looked up to see a handsome man with dark hair and eyes walk in. She gave him a wide smile.

"I'll be with you in just a minute!" she sang.

He grinned, and she melted inside.

"No problem!" He sat down to wait, and Kitty finished taking care of the child in a hurry, praying another of the sales clerks wouldn't get to the newcomer first.

After sending the little boy on his way, she turned to the new customer and gave him a brilliant smile, showing off how white her teeth were.

"Hi there! How can I help you?"

"I have an important appointment coming up soon and need some new dress shoes," the young man replied.

"We have a wonderful selection." She led him to the appropriate area. "I'm sure you'll find just what you're looking for. Is it a job interview?"

"Court date." The young man grimaced.

Kitty frowned. "Do I know you from somewhere? You look a bit familiar."

"Probably. I get around a lot."

"What's your name?"

"Charlie Bourbon."

She gasped. "You're Louis's brother, aren't you?"

"You know my brother?"

"He's married to my cousin Anne."

"Well, I'll be darned!" Charlie laughed. "Small world, isn't it?"

"It sure is! Just wait until I tell Louis I ran into you here!"

"When will you see him again?"

"When I get off work. I'm staying with him and Anne temporarily until I can get back on my feet."

"That's interesting. Maybe I'll come by sometime. Would you like that?"

"I'd love it!"
