Kathy couldn't sleep. It was the night before her wedding, and she could do nothing but lie awake and think. Was she sure she really loved Henry, or was she simply impressed by his money, his flashiness and gallantry? She remembered how she'd felt about Tommy Seymour - the thrill that had gone through her every time she'd heard his voice, the feel of his hand in her own, his lips pressed to hers. Did she feel the same way when she was with Henry?
At four in the morning, she got out of bed, dressed, and drove to the nearest Whataburger. She was dying for a chocolate malt. She bought her malt and went to sit in a corner booth. On her way, she noticed the back of a brown-haired head that looked familiar. Intrigued, she stepped around until she could see the face and saw that it was none other than Tommy Seymour's!
He was sitting alone, drinking coffee. His eyes met hers, then looked down. She slid into the booth opposite him.
"Where's your girlfriend?" she asked.
"Girlfriend?" He stared at her as if she'd grown an extra head. "What girlfriend?"
"The woman Henry saw you with in Brennan's a few months ago. He showed me a picture of the two of you together."
Tommy slowly shook his head. "I've never even been inside Brennan's, Kathy. If Henry showed you a photo, he must have fixed it somehow to make it look like me, because it definitely wasn't."
Kathy gasped. "Do you mean to say he - why, that creep!" Her eyes blazed. "He tricked me, then!"
"I'm so glad you finally realize that!" said Henry.
"Oh, Tommy, I'm so sorry!" Kathy began to cry. "I never should have listened to him!"
Tommy chuckled. "It's all right. I'm just glad you finally came to your senses."
"Me too, considering today's my wedding day!"
"You're not actually going to go through with it, are you?"
"Yes, and you're invited." She winked at him. "Be sure to wear your best."
Too startled to say anything, he watched as she left the restaurant. She drove back home, where she went to bed and slept like a baby.
"You aren't going, are you?" asked Louis.
"Why should I?" asked Anne. "I didn't even go when he married Kitty!"
"Stupidest thing I ever did!" Kitty, who'd come over for a visit, lifted Edmund to her shoulder to burp him. "I'm so glad he turned out not to be Eddie's father, after all!"
"So am I." Anne watched the mother and son interaction with longing in her heart. "If he had been, Henry probably would have won custody, and you would have been lucky to even get visitation rights."
"Oh, I know!" Tears came to Kitty's eyes. "I don't think I even knew what love was until Eddie was born. As soon as they handed him to me, I knew he was my whole world, and I would never give him up for anything!"
"I felt the same way the first time I held Reese," Louis said softly.
"I can't wait for my turn to come!" said Anne. "I feel like I've been pregnant forever!"
Kitty chuckled. "I know the feeling! I'm so glad Eddie's gonna have a cousin close to his age!"
Anne smiled as she felt her child move inside her. Everything had been completely normal at her last obstetrical visit. Surely nothing could go wrong this late in the pregnancy - could it?
Kathy and Henry stood together, facing the minister. Kathy glanced around quickly and was pleased to see he was there, after all.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony," the minister intoned. "If anyone present has good reason to object to this marriage, let him speak now or forever hold his peace."
"I do!" cried Kathy.
Henry chuckled indulgently. "Not yet, darling."
"No, what I mean is, I have reason to object," Kathy explained. "I can't marry Henry when I'm still in love with someone else." She turned to the groom. "You lied to me, Henry. You deliberately led me on to think Tommy was cheating on me, and I fell for it. Now I realize what a fool I was. I could never love you, not after what you did!"
Henry just stood there, his lips moving soundlessly, like those of a fish out of water. Kitty turned to look at Tommy, who was sitting at the end of the last row.
"Tommy Seymour is my true love, now and forever," she announced.
"You can't do this to me!" Henry had found his voice at last.
"I can and I am," Kathy told him. "Come on up here, Tommy. There will be a wedding today, but it won't be between me and Henry Tudor."
"I'll kill him!" Henry raged, but family members held him back, so he could only growl and snarl like a rabid Rottweiler as Tommy walked toward Kathy.
"I can't believe it!" cried Mary, watching the wedding on Skype with her husband. "So Kathy won't be my stepmother, after all."
Philip smiled. "Apparently not."
"I can't imagine he'd really do something like that." She paused to think it over. "Well, maybe he would, considering how he treated my mother."
"I wouldn't doubt it."
"Do you suppose he'll really hurt them? Kathy and Tommy, I mean."
"Let's hope he doesn't. I'm sure he'll meet another lady soon, anyway."
"Oh yeah, no doubt about that." Mary sighed. "I just hope she isn't another Kitty - or even worse!"
"Come here." Philip reached for his wife, and she went into his arms. He held her tight, thinking about how thankful he was that his own parents were still together and deeply in love.
