Chase pounded on the door.
"James, open up!"
James expected a visit from Chase, but not this soon. He opened the door, he had his defence rehearsed, but before he could utter a single word, Chase's fist contacted his chin, the force knocking him to the ground.
Chase stormed into the room.
"Are you kidding me James! What on earth were you thinking? You drugged her, so you could put that on her? That's a disgusting thing to do, you make me sick."
James knew what he did was wrong, his guilt kept him glued to the floor, he couldn't fight Chase after what he had done. But he had to reply, it was wrong what he did but not as bad as Chase made it sound. He thought.
"It was a mistake. I know that, I practised poor judgment, but to clarify I didn't drug her, that has some very dark implications. The only thing I did to her was put that necklace on her."
"Zoey thinks you drugged her, I'm inclined to believe her more than you, if I see you around her again we are going to have a problem, you got that?"
"You won't have to worry about that anymore, but you're naive if you think that Zoey didn't know she was wearing it, she knew it was going to hurt you. So be mad at me all you want, but some of that anger should be placed on Zoey as well and you know it."
Chase ignored his accusation.
"James, what did you put in her drink?"
"It wasn't anything crazy, it was just a high dosage of Melatonin, which is completely natural, it didn't harm her in any way."
Chase's eyes flashed with anger.
"You're delusional if you don't see anything wrong with what you did James, you drugged her and that's inexcusable."
James guilt was converting to anger.
"I told you I practised poor judgment, but this idea that I drugged her to have my way with her is ludicrous, she wasn't harmed in any way, I would never do that."
Chase's eyes darkened.
"Then why was her nose bleeding James."
"That was an accident, I would never intentionally hurt her."
"You expect me to believe that? After what you have done tonight?"
"Yes I do, because I'm not a sick person who punches girls."
James pushed himself up, the anger in the room was quickly escalating.
"Just a sick person who drugs girls."
Chase said coldly.
Chase's comment sent James over the edge, he hated what he was being accused of. He knew who he was, he wasn't perfect, but he wasn't the man Chase claimed he was. James stepped forward in anger, Chase anticipated a punch and threw one in response. James's right fist contacted Chases lip, knocking him off balance. Chase was able to recover and stepped into a right uppercut, James leaned in with a left cross that missed its target, Chases upper cut in turn contacted hard with James's face, knocking him back to the ground. James placed his hand to his face, pressuring the newly acquired wound. His face was tight with anger.
"This isn't over." He growled.
Chase stood over him, rage coursing through his veins.
"Yes it is, you're going to leave me and my friends alone."
Chase stated as he pushed himself out the door, brushing off the slight trickle of blood that his bruised lip produced.
The details of what his encounter with James had produced started to sink in with Chase, it was hard to believe what all had happened. He knew James was a good guy, but love does make people do crazy things. Chase tried to put James's accusation that Zoey knew she was wearing the Necklace to the back of his mind. He was now only concerned with how Zoey was doing, as he quickened his pace back to his dorm room. He doubted Zoey would still be there, but he wanted to be sure.
Chase arrived back at his room to the sight of Zoey sitting on his bed, her gaze locked to the floor, she was in a daze and it appeared that she had barely moved from when Chase last saw her. Chase slowly sat down beside her, he pulled Zoey into his tight embrace, Zoey allowed her weight to rest on him, she was emotionally exhausted as tears started to fall down her cheeks.
"Chase, what did you do… What happened?" Zoey managed to say, as her head rested on his chest.
"I… I punched him, I told him to leave my friends alone."
Zoey shifted her posture to face him.
"Did you guys fight?"
Zoey's gaze caught the blood that slowly started to protrude from his lip. Zoey's eyes widened in shock.
"Oh my God Chase, you guys fought, are you ok?"
Chase wiped at his wound.
"I'm fine Zoey, you should see the other guy." Chase tried to joke.
Zoey didn't find it very funny.
"I can't believe all this happened, I'm sorry you got mixed up in this Chase, but me and James are done, any guy who would devise a plan like that is not a person I want to be with, it makes me sick just thinking about it."
"Why do you think I punched him." Chase remarked.
Still holding her close by her side, Chase quickly wiped away a tear that descended down her right cheek.
"Thanks for always being there, please tell me you know I would never put that necklace on, especially knowing now what it represents."
Chase pondered for a second, James's accusation came to mind, but he quickly pushed it to the side again.
"I know Zoe, it was still hard to see you with it on, it brought back a lot of feelings, a lot of bad memories."
Her eyes locked to his, as a moment of silence befell them.
Zoey had no response; she couldn't believe what had happened today. The only thing she could think of was to give Chase a kiss on the cheek, to thank him.
Before Chase could react, Zoey pushed herself up, and grabbed a cotton ball from the bowl that stood on Michael's dresser.
"We have to fix that lip."
Zoey gently sat back down beside him. She placed the cotton on Chases open lip, soaking up the remaining blood. Allowing her face to lean in to focus on the task at hand.
Chase couldn't help but stare into Zoey's brown eyes, as she worked.
"There." She said satisfactorily.
"That should help."
Chase slowly smiled.
"Thanks Zoe."
Zoey's eyes shifted to his, her face remained just inches from his, she could feel his breath on hers.
Zoey couldn't take the tension any more, she slowly leaned in and gave a quick and gentle kiss to Chase's injured lip.
Chase didn't know what to say, he was surprised, Zoey blushed.
"Um... that should help it too." Was the best she could muster.
Chase slowly smiled.
"Thanks." Chase stated while giving her a quick embrace.
"Let's get you back to your room." Chase said as she pulled Zoey to her feet.
Zoey's mood improved at the prospect of Chase and her patching their relationship. He didn't pull away when I kissed him. She thought. Although he didn't lean into it either. Her heart stung with the obvious realization that Chase was with Mia, Zoey scolded herself for forgetting about her, what she was thinking, she had let herself get lost in the moment.
The silence persisted between them as they walked towards room 101.
Zoey wanted to say something but didn't have any words. She finally risked a question.
"So… besides what I saw, how did the date go with Mia?" She tried to ask in a friendly tone.
"It was pretty good until... well you know"
"Ya I know… but I am happy that you found someone Chase, she's a lucky girl."
Chase smirked.
"I don't know about that, especially considering we've decided to just be friends."
Zoey's posture perked up, after hearing the information.
"Oh, how come?" Zoey questioned.
"Romantic feelings were never really there, and we both knew it, we enjot spending time together, but we were trying to force it for the wrong reasons, we won't be going out again, and we're both ok with that."
Chase stated.
Zoey couldn't help her curiosity.
"What were the reasons?"
"We don't need to get into that now."
"And why not?" Zoey fired back.
"Because we've arrived at your room."
Zoey scolded her curiosity, she shouldn't try to guilt information out of him.
"Ok I get it, but you know you can tell me anything."
Chase gently nodded his head.
"I know. Thanks, Zoey." Chase said as he pulled her in for a hug.
They gently pulled away, they allowed their faces to remain close together, Chase's breath gently caressed Zoey's mouth, Zoey's eyes danced from his eyes to his lips, Chase looked deep into her eyes. Zoey gently closed her eyes and leaned in closer, Chase gently pressed his forehead against hers, and exhaled slowly. Zoey gently opened her eyes, she must've misread the situation. Their lips remained just an inch apart, as Chase rested his forehead on hers. Chase continued to look at her, Zoey craved for him to speak. He opened his mouth.
"Have a goodnight Zoey." He whispered, as he slipped away.
Zoey was frozen in her daze for seconds that felt like minutes. She finally shook out of her trance, opened the door and collapsed on her bed.
What a day, she thought.
