Chapter Two
Jacob Black couldn't help but stare at the young man who sat near the coast. He hadn't meant to stare. He hadn't even meant to be there but when his 22 year old son had the only set of house keys, he found himself at the beach in LaPush going to retrieve them.
"Earth to Dad!" His son, Benjamin, exclaimed as he waved his hand in front of Jacob's face, causing him to bring his attention back to his only child.
Benjamin had been born out of wedlock, a few years after Bella Swan's vampire boyfriend disappeared and never returned. Jacob had finally managed to get a real date out of the pale girl and the rest was history. They seemed to have a normal relationship, they had seemed happy until Bella had unexpectedly gotten pregnant and the reality of their relationship dawned on her. To her, having the baby meant that she was officially trapped in a relationship with someone who was only meant to be a rebound. Even though they had been together a few years by then.
Slowly but surely after the birth of Benjamin William Black, she became a shell of the person Jacob thought he loved. She was cold, distant and after a few more years Jacob knew she was also unfaithful. But instead of leaving any normal person would, he stuck it out. Trying to maintain the facade for Benjamin's sake.
The last straw had come almost 17 months ago when Jacob finally had enough. He had been patient, he had been forgiving even but once Bella started taking her resentments our on Benjamin, enough was enough.
It had taken 20 years for it to finally boil over and instead of taking out on Jacob, who tried his hardest to never rise to the occasion, she took her anger out on Benjamin and Jacob saw no other reason to stay.
So that night he packed up his stuff and Benjamin packed up his and left. They went back to Billy's and stayed their for a few months while Jacob moved forward with the divorce.
It had taken just over a year before everything was finalised and the two young Black men had moved into a two bedroom house in the same neighbourhood as Sam and Emily Uley. They had been living there only two weeks now and Jacob still hadn't gotten a second set of keys cut which is what led him to that moment on the beach.
"Sorry Benj.." he stuttered as he pulled him eyes away from the young man. He looked into the almost black eyes of his son that mirrored his own. "I zoned out for a second."
"Yeah no shit." Benjamin replied as he pulled the keys Jacob had been asking for out of his pocket. "Are you going to hang around?" He asked. "The guys say the elders and everyone else will be here in a bit."
Jacob rubbed the back of his neck as he glanced towards the man who had caught his attention. "Probably. I was going to head back and finish unpacking but I haven't seen everyone since we officially moved back."
Benjamin nodded. "Fair enough pops. I'm gonna go back to the game. I think Sam just pulled up anyways."
Jacob smiles at his son as he ran back to the pack of guys playing football a short distance away. He let a deep breath before turning around, trying his hardest not to look down by the coast.
"Hey Jake!" Emily exclaimed as she approached their old friend. Sam walked next to her and smiled as they got closer.
"Jacob, you don't look a day over 18" he chuckled. Jacob have a sheepish smile as he shook the older mans hand. "Old habits die hard." He responded as he spoke about phasing. Mostly everyone on the reservation had stopped phasing after the Cullens' had disappeared but others, like Jacob, still did so. For Jacob it was about having an escape. Whenever Bella has started one of her rants, he would phase and take his anger out on anything. Mainly large trees in the forests that surrounded Forks.
"You look good Jake.." Emily replied. "We we're sorry to hear about you and Bella.. But we're happy you and Benjamin are home."
"Thank you Em.." Jacob gave her a small smile as she touched his shoulder before walking over to set up by the fire pit.
"Welcome home man." Sam grinned. "Everyone's excited to see you." Jacob sighed. "I know.. I'm excited to see everyone. It's been awhile."
Sam nodded. "Yeah it has. Why don't you help me and Em set up before the others get here?"
Jacob nodded. "Sure." He response as he followed the older gentleman, briefly looking over at the man who continued to sit a distance away.
I couldn't help but feel the back of neck burning as I continued to spend the of my day at the beach with Nyla. Every time I thought someone was looking at me I'd quickly try and stop the person to no success. Every time I looked around no one looked in my direction. I sighed to myself. 'I must be imaging things..' I mumbled to myself before directing my attention back to Nyla.
"So I'm thinking about working for my dad's company.." she rambled. "Just until something comes along.. You know?"
I shrugged. "I guess. Better than doing nothing."
Nyla sighed before sitting up. "Yeah I know.. It's just there's so little going for this small town."
"I agree but you have your degree. You'll find something and at least working for your dad is better then working at a restaurant like moi." I gestured at myself with a sarcastic smile on my face. "I mean, come on I'm living the dream."
Nyla rolled her eyes for staring deeply into mine. "You could easily finish your degree at the University of Washington and come back to go your residency at Forks memorial. You're acting like you haven't got a brain underneath that amazing hair."
I gave her a small smile before turning towards the ocean. "I know that. I'm just not ready to start over yet."
"But will you ever be?" Nyla returned my small smile. "You can't hide out in this small town forever Leo."
"Gosh you sound like my dad." I scoffed.
"He isn't wrong that's why." Nyla replied as she stood up and brushed herself off. "I'm going to get a beer, do you want one?"
I nodded and watched as she wondered back up the beach. I deep down knew she was right but I wasn't ready to start over. I knew I had too like I said but I felt like I wasn't the person I had been when I started my degree. Now I felt different and I didn't know if the dreams I had before Keifen were still the dreams I wanted to peruse.
I sighed to myself as I pulled my knees up to my chest and rested my head against them.
"I think you could use a drink."
A jumped slightly at the sound of a deep husky voice. My head quickly looked to my left and my jaw dropped slightly as the Greek God from earlier stood above me with a bottle of beer in hand.
I swallowed the saliva that had pooled in my mouth and licked my now dry lips. "Ah.. Thanks."
He chuckled at me as he made his way down to the sand and sat next to me. "Here." He replied as he handed me the beverage.
"I'm Jacob."
"Leo." I responded as I took the drink from his hand.
"Nice to meet you Leo." He smiled. "What brings you down to LaPush?"
I raised my eyebrow. Not many people didn't know of the half 'breed' living in LaPush. It wasn't look down upon but some very close minded people living on the reservation hadn't loved the idea when my dad brought home my mother.
"I live here."
He seemed surprised. "Seriously? I've basically been here my whole life and I've never seen you before."
I smiled a little. "You probably weren't looking properly."
Jacob smiled at me again before taking a swig of his beer. "I doubt that. I would of noticed that smile."
I couldn't help but feel my face blush red. Even with my dark complexion he would of noticed it. "Well I've been away for the past three years so maybe we just never had the chance to cross paths."
"More then likely. I've been living in Forks myself. Only just moved back." I nodded as I listened to him.
"Well there you go. We just missed each other."
"Looks like we did.." he grinned. I couldn't help me feel my cheeks heat up again. It had been awhile since anyone had made me feel his way.
"So Leo.. I know we just met and all but is there any chance I could get your number before I take off?"
I couldn't help but stare at him. Was he crazy? What could he possibly want with me?
"I- I-" I stuttered. Not really knowing how to respond.
"How about this.." he started. "If I give you my number then the power is in your hands on whether you'd like to contact me.. sound good?"
I couldn't even form words as I just started at his almost black eyes and knobbed.
"Can I have your phone?" He smirked. I blinked at him before finally reaching into my pocket. "Here." I replied as he reach out and typed his number into my phone.
"I don't really do this.." he said quietly as he saved the number in my phone. "I've just gotten out of a long relationship and this is the first time in almost a year that I've wanted to take someone on a date.."
"A date?" I questioned. My disbelief taking over my brain.
"Yeah a date. You're probably one of the most beautiful people on this beach and I'd like to get to know you."
I couldn't help but shake my head. "Me? Seriously?"
He laughed as he got up. "Yes you." He smiled at me again before leaning down and placing a soft kiss on my cheek. "Call, text, email me etc. Just contact me." He said before winking at me again and then turning to leave. Leaving me stunned and unable to do anything but watch him walk away.
To be continued..
