Chapter 2
Silvina waved happily to Mika after Charms class ended and started walking toward her second class. As she entered the room, Silvina saw several desks on one side of the room that were all facing towards what looked like shelves full of books and vials. In front of the shelves was a larger desk that had a tall dark haired woman sitting behind it.
" Ah. You must be Silvina Vissity. We have been waiting for you. " Professor Patil spoke calmly with a smile before Silvina apologised.
" I'm sorry Professor. I got a little lost. " Silvina smiled nervously as Professor Patil asked her to take a seat. Once Silvina had sat down and got out her potion making textbook.
" Now. In potions class there will be little need for using your wands so unless the potion recipe calls for a spell, Please keep your wands in your robes. Firstly... My name is Professor Patil. In potions i will be teaching you how to mix everything from simple antidotes to the more advanced potions such as Veritaserum. Normally advanced potions would not be attempted until at least your third year however, I would like to gauge your skills as potion makers. Please find a potion recipe in your textbook and make said potion as a test. " Professor Patil smiled as whisper of excitement filled the room.
Silvina flicked through the recipes for potions until she found one that caught her eye. After collecting the ingredients listed, Silvina read the instructions from the book.
" Ok.. First step... Fill cauldron three quarters with water and boil. " Silvina spoke softly and completed each step as she read them. " Step two.. Add shrivelfig and porcupine quills. "
As the cauldron bubbled softly, Silvina continued the steps for the potion. " Step three.. Stir four times anti-clockwise then add a sprig of peppermint to counteract side effects. "
As the soothing smell of peppermint emanated from her cauldron, Silvina read the next step. " Crush Sopoforous beans to release juice and add juice to cauldron. " After crushing the required amount of beans and tipping the juice into the cauldron, Silvina stepped back nervously as her cauldron sizzled. After a moment, The cauldron fell silent and Silvina continued the potion. " Ok. Last step. Add wormwood and stir six times anti-clockwise. "
As Silvina finished the recipe, The potion turned a sunshine yellow colour as a sweet aroma filled the air. As Silvina motioned to call the professor, The professor's voice echoed from behind her.
" Interesting choice Silvina. Euphoria. Perfect colour and scent... Peppermint to alleviate side effects... But what about the taste hmm? Fill a small vial so that I might test your potion. " Professor Patil smiled as Silvina did as she was told before handing the vial to the Professor. Professor Patil looked at the vial curiously before taking a small sip and sighing contently. " Ah... Perfectly brewed. It's effects are almost instantaneous. The peppermint adds a wonderful smell and taste but doesn't overpower the sweetness of the potion itself. Very well done Silvina. Ten points to Ravenclaw. " Professor Patil handed the vial back to Silvina before walking away to check the progress of the other students. After about forty five minutes, A bell sounded throughout the school signalling the end of that class.
Meanwhile
" Headmistress i am not saying that things need to change but if students are as skilled on a broom as Silvina then exceptions should be made to accommodate the skill level of the student. " Professor Vissity spoke calmly and politely before Headmistress McGonagall responded.
" I agree with that but will that not appear as favouritism? " Headmistress McGonagall spoke curiously as Professor Vissity sighed.
" It might. But we all know there are students here that well outdo the year they are in. Take Silvina for example. She mastered her Firebolt when she was seven. Her wand is a handmade one of a kind wand that is made from two of the most difficult wand materials to master and yet she did it. And it isn't just her. Just today i had four first year students that could fly better than some professional quidditch players i have seen. Now i am not saying that we cater only to the gifted. I am just saying that we accept the fact that some are on a higher level of skill than others and accommodate both skilled and learning within the curriculum. " Professor Vissity spoke coolly as Headmistress McGonagall looked up at the picture of Albus Dumbledore that was hanging on the wall behind her. As the picture smiled back at her, Headmistress McGonagall sighed softly.
" I cannot argue the logic of your reasoning. But this is something that both the staff and students must agree on. We have plenty of trouble with egotistical students already. I have had several reports of students bullying others because they have better robes or wands or brooms than they do. I am just concerned that these incidents may escalate if we approve giving first years brooms. " Headmistress McGonagall leant forward and rested her chin on her hands as Professor Vissity spoke.
" I can understand that. May i at least hold some evaluation tests with the first years to see which ones are skilled and write you a report before you decide what to do? " Professor Vissity stood calmly and spoke in a tone that mirrored how she spoke to her daughter.
" If anything happens to the students.. " Headmistress McGonagall sat upright slowly as Professor Vissity finished her sentence.
" I will accept full responsibility. And if i am correct? " Professor Vissity almost challenged Headmistress McGonagall playfully before she responded.
" Then i will hold a meeting between the staff and myself to see what we all think. But you must take absolute care in these tests. If a student shows even the smallest amount of instability... " Headmistress McGonagall looked toward Professor Vissity sternly.
" Then i will defer to your good judgement Headmistress. " Professor Vissity smiled playfully before leaving.
As the door closed, Headmistress McGonagall sighed exhaustively." Between her and Wolfe... It's going to be a long year..." After shaking her head and smiling, Headmistress McGonagall continued with her work as the day went on.
In the hallway
As Silvina looked at her timetable, She realised that her next class was flying.
" This should be fun. I've been looking forward to flying class. " Silvina thought to herself with a smile before skipping happily toward the training courtyard.
As she arrived, Silvina immediately noticed her Firebolt laying on the ground neatly in formation with several other brooms. After walking over and standing next to her broom, Silvina heard her mothers voice along with several other voices.
" Alright first years. Find your broom if it is here otherwise choose a broom the school has supplied until you can get a broom of your own. Firstly, Put your hand over your broom and say up. " Professor Vissity watched calmly as several students including Silvina spoke and they're brooms immediately rose into they're open hand. Other brooms simply rolled around on the ground, Some sat motionless and one was even flying away from the first year that was attempting to use it.
" Those of you who need help will stay grounded for the time being. Everyone else mount your broom. " Professor Vissity observed the few students that had succeeded mount they're brooms while correcting any mistakes or improper mounting. After a few minutes, Silvina and the other first years were waiting for they're next instructions.
" Now then. How many of you have mastered the broom you have? " Professor Vissity smiled as three students including Silvina raised they're hands. " Excellent. You three form a group and demonstrate formation flying. You have five minutes to discuss your formation and decide who will lead it. "
The three students walked away from the main group before talking amongst themselves. Along with Silvina was a young boy with dark brown hair and bright green eyes wearing Slytherin robes and a young girl with fiery red hair and bright amber eyes wearing Gryffindor robes.
" Firstly my name is Silvina Vissity. It's a pleasure to meet you both. You are? " Silvina spoke happily as the young boy introduced himself.
" My name is Jinn Duran. Pleased to meet you. It must sound odd coming from a Slytherin but i do hope we can be friends." Jinn smiled at Silvina as she nodded happily and turned to the girl. " And you are? "
" My name is Aurora Shai. Pleasure to meet you both. Like Jinn i do hope the three of us can be friends. " Aurora smiled happily as both Silvina and Jinn nodded with a smile before Silvina spoke.
" So firstly we should discuss which formation to fly in. " Silvina spoke calmy before Jinn responded.
" Seeing as there are only three of us perhaps a hawkshead attack formation will work best. " Jinn spoke coolly before Aurora spoke.
" I agree. It is a simplistic yet efficient formation that only requires three people. Chasers use it in quidditch. " Aurora smiled as Jinn noted her knowledge of flying. After Aurora thanked him, Silvina spoke.
" Sounds good. And who should lead the formation? " Silvina spoke before the three first years thought for a moment before Aurora spoke calmly.
" Well during the sorting i heard your mother say that you grew up with your Firebolt. I have only had mine for the last few years. What about you Jinn? " Aurora looked toward Jinn as he spoke.
" I didn't grow up with my broom either. I got it for my birthday last year and my parents let me fly every day. I would say that Silvina is the best suited to lead the formation. " Jinn looked towards Silvina as she spoke.
" I have never flown with anyone except my mum before.. I.. I'm not sure about this... " Silvina looked at the ground nervously as Aurora spoke.
" I have flown in this formation before. I will tell you everything you should know as the leader. We will both be right beside you the entire flight. If anything happens we can deal with it together. " Aurora smiled as Silvina looked at her with a smile and nodded. " Ok. As the leader you guide the two of us where you want to go. To direct us all you need to do is turn your head slightly in the direction you want to go. If you want us to turn left, look left. Right, look right. Look up to increase our formation altitude or down to decrease. Other than that we will follow your movements. All three of us are riding Firebolts so staying together shouldn't be an issue. " Aurora spoke calmly and soothingly as Silvina listened intently before speaking.
" Ok i think i can do this... Let's go. " Silvina spoke softly and smiled as the three walked back to Professor Vissity and told her they were ready.
" Alright. Stand in formation and mount your brooms. When you are in the air try to stay coordinated. If anything happens I will intervene. Take off when you are ready. " Professor Vissity watched quietly as Silvina, Aurora and Jinn moved into formation before Silvina looked to Jinn and Aurora nervously. After they smiled back, The three took off and flew upwards in formation. As they flew, Silvina tilted her head to the right before flying in the direction she was looking as Jinn and Aurora followed in perfect sync. After several manuevers and flying around the castle in perfect formation, Silvina, Aurora and Jinn landed back in the training courtyard.
As they stood calmly and smiled to each other, Professor Vissity walked over and spoke calmly. " Well done. The three of you displayed masterful flying and formation sync. You may rest while i see to the rest of the group. "
Silvina smiled as her mother tousled her hair gently before walking back to the other first years to help them.
As Silvina looked up at the sky, Aurora nudged her arm gently. " See? I knew you could do it. "
" Aurora is right. I couldn't have lead a formation like that. You were awesome Silvina. " Jinn smiled as Silvina giggled.
" Thanks you two. It means alot to me. Not only that you both motivated me to lead but also that you both want to be my friends. Thank you for that. " Silvina smiled happily as a bell signalled the end of class. After checking her timetable, Silvina headed to the great hall with Aurora and Jinn for lunch. As they walked into the great hall, Silvina saw Mika and waved happily before saying goodbye to her new friends and heading to the Ravenclaw table.
As Silvina ate her lunch with the other students, Headmistress McGonagall's voice echoed throughout the hall. " Attention students! "
As everyone in the great hall stopped what they were doing and turned to face the Headmistress, Her voice rang through the hall again. " From today onwards Professor Wolfe will be teaching Duelling to anyone who wishes to learn. First years will be allowed to attend with permission from parents. The first class will be after lunch here in the Great Hall. " As Headmistress McGonagall finished speaking, Professor Vissity sat down in a space beside Silvina.
" I know you are going to ask sweety. Yes, You can attend Duelling with Wolfe. But i expect you to show restraint. If anything happens i want you to find me immediately or send Kari to find me. I don't want you or anyone else getting hurt. " Professor Vissity smiled as Silvina nodded happily. After tousling Silvina's hair lovingly, Professor Vissity stood and walked toward the entrance of the Great Hall.
As lunch ended, Most of the students left the hall to attend they're next class. The students that remained numbered around thirty. Once the tables were cleared, A duelling stage was set up and students gathered around, Professor Wolfe walked up a small set of steps at one end of the stage and spoke clearly.
" The rules for the duel are simple. Basic offensive and defensive spells only. And no spells of your own making.. Yes I mean you Silvina. " Professor Wolfe looked directly at Silvina as her hand shot into the air before a look of disappointment adorned her face and her hand lowered as Professor Wolfe continued. " Which is why you will first duel me. So your fellow students can see why i am not allowing personal spells and to allow me to explain proper defensive spells. You will ONLY use your own spells if are duelling me. Am i clear? "
Silvina looked up with a smile and nodded happily before walking to the opposite end of the stage and walking up the steps. As she walked towards Professor Wolfe, Several whispers echoed around her. Silvina stopped in front of Professor Wolfe and bowed before turning around and walking backwards until Professor Wolfe called for her to stop. " That is a good enough distance. Everyone else will step back as far as possible. Now then, The first defensive spell i will teach you is Protego. It has a few much more powerful versions such as Protego Duo, Protego Horribilis, Protego Maxima and Protego Totalum. However the basic spell is simply Protego. Use one of your special spells Silvina. I will use Protego to protect myself. " Professor Wolfe smiled as Silvina grinned before speaking.
" Fulmen! " Silvina spoke clearly as she pointed her wand forward. The moment her wand pointed directly toward Professor Wolfe, A bolt of lightning erupted from the tip of her wand. Professor Wolfe spoke barely a split second later.
" Protego! " Professor Wolfe spoke calmly as the lightning bolt hit her shield spell and sizzled loudly before firing back toward Silvina who spoke calmly as the bolt of lightning flew towards her.
" Finite Incantatem! " Silvina smiled as the bolt of lightning simply vanished before hitting her.
" Well done Silvina. As you can all see, Protego can deflect the majority of spells that will be used against you. Another option as Silvina demonstrated is Finite Incantatum. That spell will completely remove magical effects in the area. Once more Silvina, But this time i want you to use one of your most powerful spells. As i will use the most powerful version of Protego. " Professor Wolfe smiled as Silvina nodded and spoke clearly but with force in her voice.
" Percute Tempestus! " Silvina moved her wand in a graceful swirl as lightning built up at the tip of her wand. As Silvina pointed her wand forward, A huge ball of lightning fired forward with the force of a hurricane as Professor Wolfe spoke.
" Protego Maxima! " Professor Wolfe spoke just in time as the ball of lightning collided with her Shield Charm.
The shield held strong for a few moments but as it looked like the ball of lightning might be deflected, The shield began to crack.
" Finite Incantatum! " Professor Wolfe spoke clearly as the ball of lightning shattered her shield before disappearing. " As you can see, Silvina has all but mastered her wand and in doing so, Has created several spells that are unique to the core used in her wand. Only a wand with lightning as it's core can produce lightning based magic. On top of that it is incredibly hard to master a wand like Silvina's. It is a one of a kind wand so do not try to recreate her personal spells under any circumstances. " Professor Wolfe smiled as Silvina bowed again before walking back down the small steps and walking back to where she was previously standing.
Professor Wolfe watched Silvina walk back to where she was previously standing before speaking clearly. " Moving on. Let's have a pair of students this time. Remember to use Protego as your defensive spell and one offensive spell. Now then.. Let's have.. Jinn and Aurora. "
Jinn was on the left side of the room and smiled before walking toward the steps as Aurora walked up the opposite steps. As they approched Professor Wolfe, Aurora spoke teasingly. " Your not nervous right Jinn? "
Jinn chuckled mischievously. " In your dreams Aurora. "
The two smiled as Professor Wolfe spoke again. " Now then. Aurora you will use an Offensive spell first. Jinn you will use Defensive. Then you will switch. After everyone has had a turn, We will have some actual Duels. You may begin when you are both ready. " Professor Wolfe walked past Aurora and down the stairs as both Aurora and Jinn bowed before walking back until they were the same distance apart as Professor Wolfe and Silvina had been.
Aurora stood calmly before smiling and speaking quickly. " Rictusempra! "
As the bolt of red fired out of her wand, Jinn spoke. " Protego! "
The bolt of red barely touched the shield before firing back towards Aurora and hitting her in the chest. As Aurora groaned slightly and stood up, Jinn spoke again. " Sorry about that Aurora. I forgot to mention that i specialise in shield charms. Stupify! "
" Protego Maxima! " Aurora spoke forcefully as a shimmering shield formed around her. As the Stupify spell hit the shield, It appeared to be rippling slightly before the spell fired back and hit Jinn in the shoulder.
As Jinn stood up, Aurora smiled before speaking. " Then we are evenly matched Jinn. My mother taught me shield spells and practised them with me since i was little. "
After bowing, Jinn and Aurora walked down the steps and walked over to Silvina to watch the other students practice.
" You two are awesome! Those Shield spells were perfect! " Silvina spoke happily as Jinn smiled sheepishly and Aurora smiled proudly.
" We are nowhere near as good as you though Silvina.. You have your own spells and everything. I don't even know how to create spells. " Jinn spoke with disappointment in his voice before Silvina hugged him gently.
" You are just as good as i am Jinn. So are you Aurora. The only difference is that i have my own spells. But you will both have your own spells someday aswell. " Silvina smiled happily as both Aurora and Jinn grinned.
As the three were talking to each other, the final practice duel ended. As the two students walked down the steps, Professor Wolfe spoke. " Now that everyone has had a turn using a defensive and offensive spell, We will have some proper duels. The rules still apply. Basic Offensive and Defensive spells and no personal spells. Aurora and Silvina will be our first pair. "
Aurora looked at Silvina with a look of surprise as Silvina smiled and walked to one end of the duelling stage. Aurora walked to the other end of the stage and walked up the steps. The two walked to the middle of the stage and bowed to each other before walking back to the distance Professor Wolfe originally specified.
As Aurora motioned to speak, Silvina beat her to it. " Rictusempra! "
A bolt of red fired out of Silvina's wand and hit Aurora square in the chest, knocking her backwards. After groaning, Aurora stood and spoke clearly as she pointed her wand forward. " Stupify! "
Silvina spoke quickly before the spell hit her. " Protego! " As the spell hit her shield and bounced back at Aurora, Silvina spoke. " Locomotor Mortis! "
Aurora saw her rebounding spell and spoke " Protego! " The spell hit her shield and bounced away as Aurora watched and lowered her shield. As Aurora looked back at Silvina, She saw the second spell a split second before it hit her. Aurora stumbled and fell to the floor as her legs locked together.
As Aurora motioned to speak, Professor Wolfe spoke. " Finite Incantatem! " Aurora's legs were freed and she stood up as Silvina bowed to her. As Aurora bowed in return, Professor Wolfe spoke again. " Well done both of you... " Before Professor Wolfe could continue, A bell sounded, Marking the end of the period. " But unfortunately we are out of time. Please check your timetables and make sure you get to your next class. "
Silvina, Aurora and Jinn took they're timetables out of the pocket of they're robes and looked at them. As all three of them realised that they had Transfiguration together as they're next class, Jinn spoke nervously. " I.. Um.. I have never been any good at Transfiguration spells. The most basic one my mum taught was a... well...disaster.. " Jinn looked down sadly before Aurora spoke. " It's ok Jinn. Silvina and I will help you. We can sit together in classes and help each other. We do have all the same classes anyway so why not? "
Silvina giggled happily before speaking. " Aurora is right. Why should we struggle on our own if we can work together? I like this plan. "
Jinn smiled and nodded before walking towards the Transfiguration classroom with Silvina and Aurora. After entering the Transfiguration classroom, Jinn, Aurora and Silvina sat together in the third row from the teachers desk.
After a few moments, Professor Bell entered the room before the room quickly fell silent.
" Welcome to Transfiguration class. In this class you will learn to transform objects into other objects. The spell we will learn today is a good example. Reparifarge.
This spell counters the effects of a failed Transfiguration such as an animal that is only partially transfigured. As Transfiguration magic is dangerous, Learning the spell Reparifarge is essential. As you can see on your desks there are an assortment of poorly transfigured objects. You will practice Reparifarge on these objects for today's lesson. Please read the section on Reparifarge in your Beginners guide to Transfiguration. " Professor Bell spoke calmly before walking around the room and observing the students practising.
" I.. I'm not sure i can do this... " Jinn spoke softly with a blatantly obvious lack of confidence before Silvina spoke.
" You can do it Jinn. I know you can. Just take a deep breathe and try your best. " Silvina smiled as Jinn nodded and took a breathe before looking down at the half transfigured book in front of him on the desk.
" Alright... Reparifarge! " Jinn spoke clearly and pointed his wand at the half transfigured book. After a moment, The book trembled before transforming back into a complete book. " I did it! "
As Jinn smiled happily, Aurora and Silvina giggled and practised the spell themselves. After roughly half an hour, A bell sounded signalling the end of the lesson. After leaving the Transfiguration classroom, Silvina noticed that she only had one class left for the day.
" My final class for today... Defence Against The Dark Arts. " Silvina smiled at the thought of relaxing for the afternoon as she walked to the Defence Against The Dark Arts classroom.
As Silvina walked up the stairs leading to the second floor of Hogwarts, Jinn and Aurora caught up with her.
" Seriously Silvina... How do you walk so fast? " Jinn panted slightly before catching his breathe and walking alongside Silvina and Aurora.
" I just walk.. I'm not trying to hurry or anything. " Silvina giggled as Jinn gave her an "I don't believe you" look.
" Naturally. So... Defence Against the Dark Arts. Wonder what we are going to learn. " Aurora spoke calmly
" No idea. But I'm sure it will be educational. " Jinn chuckled softly as Silvina and Aurora rolled their eyes.
After a few minutes walk, Silvina, Aurora and Jinn entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom. At one end of the room stood a tall cupboard. The other students were still entering the classroom as Professor Bell spoke.
" Good afternoon students. Firstly..." Professor Bell stopped speaking as the tall cupboard shook for a moment. " Firstly... Today's lesson will be about Boggart's. Does anyone know what a Boggart is exactly? "
" A Boggart is a shapeshifter. It appears to each person as the thing they fear most. No one knows what a Boggart looks like when it is alone." Aurora spoke softly but with a slight tremble in her voice before Professor Bell spoke.
" Correct! And what is the spell used against a Boggart? " Professor Bell spoke directly to Aurora this time.
Aurora sighed softly before speaking. " The Riddikulus charm. It makes the Boggart change the appearance of the persons fear into something they may find amusing. "
" Correct again! Ten points to Gryffindor. Now then everyone form a single line. We will each face the Boggart and use the Riddikulus charm. If you fail the charm or are too scared it is alright. I will step in. " Professor Bell smiled as the students lined up. Jinn was first, Aurora third and Silvina sixth.
As Jinn stepped forward, Professor Bell opened the doors of the cupboard, A blazing inferno spilled forth and formed into a tall flaming snake as Jinn gasped and stepped back before speaking. " Fiendfyre..."
Jinn fell backward as the flaming serpent charged. Professor Bell stepped in front of Jinn and the serpent trembled for a moment before changing it's shape.
As Professor Bell stood still, The Boggart shifted into the form of Lord Voldemort and raised a wand toward her as she spoke.
" Riddikulus! " Professor Bell's voice almost echoed through the room as the Boggart's shape changed to Voldemort wearing a pink frilly dress and a large hat with various flowers on it. As the Boggart retreated into the cupboard and it's doors closed, Professor Bell giggled softly at the Image of Voldemort in a frilly dress that was now etched into her mind.
" Never thought I would see that. Now then..." Professor Bell turned and knelt down in front of Jinn. " Are you alright? "
" No. No.. I am not. " Jinn stood slowly and walked toward the back of the room with a pained look on his face as the second student stepped forward and had his turn.
As Aurora stepped forward, Professor Bell spoke softly. " Remember that it is alright to be scared and it is alright if you can't do this. "
Aurora nodded nervously before Professor Bell opened the cupboard doors. For a moment nothing happened. Then a a deep growl echoed out of the cupboard as two large paws thudded against the floor.
Aurora looked up in terror as a Manticore stepped out of the cupboard and looked at her before roaring loudly.
As Aurora stepped backwards quickly, She tried her best to use the charm. " Ri... Rid... " Before she try a third time, Silvina had moved forward and stepped in front of her.
The Manticore froze for several moments before trembling and changing into a perfect copy of Silvina herself. Silvina gasped softly before raising her wand. "Riddikulus! "
The copy of Silvina trembled for a moment before disappearing in a puff of smoke before the cupboard doors slammed shut as Silvina spun around and hugged Aurora tightly. " It's ok Aurora. Your safe. "
" I... I was so scared... I could barely speak.. " Aurora cried softly in Silvina's arms as Professor Bell walked over and spoke softly.
" Your greatest fear is yourself? Why? " Professor Bell listened carefully as Silvina responded.
" Because despite having mastered my wand... My magic is volatile and dangerous. If I cast my spells incorrectly they have devastating consequences. I have caused people to get hurt in the past and my wand has a tendency to... React to me. My emotions or thoughts have caused it cast spells randomly. " Silvina looked up at Professor Bell who had a look of astonishment on her face as she spoke.
" I have never heard of a wand reacting to it's owner in such a way. May I see your wand? " Professor Bell held out her hand as Silvina looked hesitant but slowly handed her wand to the Professor.
" This is no ordinary wand is it? Acacia wood is difficult to master. What is the core? " Professor Bell looked back at Silvina as she handed the wand back to her.
" Thunderbird tail feather. " Silvina spoke softly as she let go of Aurora and turned to face Professor Bell.
" Come and see me after class. I would like to speak with you in private. " Professor Bell smiled before turning back to the rest of the students and continuing the class.
Silvina turned and walked with Aurora to where Jinn was sitting in the corner of the room as the other students had a turn casting the Riddikulus charm.
After about an hour, A bell chime echoed through the school signalling the end of the class. As the other students left the room, Silvina followed Professor Bell into her office.
