It was still early in the morning, but small rays of sunlight fell through the cracks in the curtain. The heat felt nice on her face. Birds flew and Alyss slowly woke up to their fine songs.

The bed was so comfortable! She felt beside her for a moment, but her husband was no longer beside her. Only then did she smell the strong aroma of coffee and a smile came to her face.

She threw off the blanket and stepped out of the bed into her slippers. She got up and her nightgown fell messily across her long body. She turned around so she could pull the blanket tidily, then walked toward the door. In the meantime, she took a quick look at her reflection in the mirror. Her hair was messy and her nightgown was the same.

After straightening her nightgown and putting her hair in a bun, she walked to the door and slowly opened it.

She entered the cozy living room. Now she could smell the good coffee even stronger. But there was another smell in the air. The smell of fried egg. She sniffed the scent and was hungry.

And there in his brown, soft chair sat her husband Will with his wild hair and messy nightgown. He was reading a reporter with a coffee mug in his hand when he saw Alyss enter. He smiled broadly

"Good morning, honey!"

Alyss also laughed.

''Good morning''

"Coffee?" Will asked, nodding at the coffee pot on the stove. "That you have to ask." Alyss quipped. Will laughed. "You never know with you."

Alyss came up to him and gave him a morning kiss. "I'll take it myself. You just sit comfortably ''

"I made egg too!" Will said enthusiastically.

"Yes ... I already smelled that." Alyss called back.

After Alyss took a fried egg and a cup of coffee, she sat down next to him in her own chair. Will put down his report and took a sip of his coffee. Alyss took a bite from her egg.

It was delicious!

"Hmmm, well done sweetie," she said, enjoying the egg. "Thanks!" Will answered proudly. "I got the recipe from Halt. I just have the idea that he didn't come up with it himself, but Pauline did. "

Alyss laughed with her mouth full.

''Probably!''

When Alyss finished her egg and coffee she cleaned up. "So what time are you leaving?" Asked Will. Alyss didn't know what he was talking about. She looked at him questioningly, but then she realized she was going to leave with an escort on assignment.

''Oh! I had completely forgotten that!' She said. "They're expecting me at Redmont Castle around noon."

"I'm glad I asked about it, then," Will said with a laugh

"I have to get ready then!"

Alyss had taken a quick shower. You didn't know when you had another chance to wash yourself. Then she put on her courier uniform. A white dress with the symbol of a courier of the king. She had just combed her long blonde hair until there was no tangles left and then braided into a graceful long braid.

"You look beautiful," said Will as she entered the living room.

"Thank you sweetie!" She replied.

Will had seen her in her uniform often enough, but each time he was surprised at how good she looked with the white dress on. Her deep blue eyes matched the emblem beautifully.

It was almost time for Alyss to go. She had saddled her horse and packed her things she had prepared a few days earlier. Will had prepared some food for the road.

''I'm going to miss you! Do you know when you will come back? "He asked. ''I will miss you too. And I have no idea. It depends on how long it takes to convince the baron to join us. ''

Alyss was sent to some headstrong baron in the south, and Arald had received some complaints about him. He did not always obey the law and did his own thing. Baron Arald found Alyss a suitable candidate to put him in his place.

Alyss saw Will's expression. "It's going to be okay, you don't have to worry."

"All right then." he said, more relieved because he knew she was right.

"The question is ... are you going to make it while I'm not there?" She winked at him. "I have enough to keep busy," Will replied. "And besides, tomorrow I will go with Halt to a small village in the west of the empire. There seems to be a group of highwaymen there to plunder the harvest. ''

Will laughed.

"I love you!" He said. Alyss smiled lovingly at him. "I love you too!"

He kissed her and they stood there in each other's arms for a while until Alyss really had to leave.

"Bye honey," Will called after her. Alyss waved as she drove off. Will looked after her until she turned the corner and he could no longer see her.

Not knowing that was the last glimpse he would ever see of his wife.
