Chapter Nine

Unforeseen Sleep Over

"Ofelia?" Bruce called for her as the gap between them got smaller. When he finally was in arms reach, he pulled her to him in a crushing hug. Doll stood stiff in his arms unable to make sense of the situation. "I'm so glad you're okay. I'm sorry this happened to you." Bruce muttered into her hair.

"It's fine... I'm fine." Doll told him making her voice come out as soft as she could. She waited somewhat patiently for him to release her but it didn't seem like it was ever going to happen. It felt like an eternity when his arms finally loosened from around her and it was only because of the clearing of a throat that he did so. Much to Doll's annoyance he didn't completely let go. He still had one arm wrapped around her waist; afraid if he let her go The Joker would somehow steal her away. Doll glanced over Bruce's shoulder to see who interrupted them to find Commissioner Jim Gordon standing awkwardly watching them.

"I'm sorry to interrupt but I have some question for Miss Burkley if she doesn't mind?" Gordon asked. "I know you're probably pretty shook up but I was hoping you would speak with me."

"Of course, ... I'm sorry I don't know your name." Doll's acting was going to be put to the test. Jim Gordon was one of the few people that had spent a lot of time around Doll and was still alive. He hadn't just seen her from far away or from photos; he had seen her up close and personal. Doll had to make sure that he didn't see through her disguise.

"Oh yes, my apologizes. I was told you were new to the city. My names Jim Gordon. I'm the police commissioner." Gordon told her with a friendly smile.

"It's nice to meet you Commissioner Gordon." Doll told him. "You said you had some questions for me?"

"Yes, I've talked to a few guests already; they mentioned that The Joker targeted you. Did he say anything about why?" Gordon asked.

Doll paused a moment in thought before speaking.

"I'm not sure why he chose me but when he arrived, he was looking for Bruce." Doll told him truthfully.

"I see. So, you didn't do anything to grab his attention?" Gordon asked her.

Doll shook her head no. "Not that I know of."

"Okay, and when he held you hostage did he say anything that stood out as important? Maybe why he was looking for Mr. Wayne or anything like that?"

Doll stood in silence to try to seem like she was thinking it over in her head. Bruce still stood next to her with one arm wrapped around her; she felt his hand move in soothing circles on her back.

"I... I don't remember him saying anything about why he wanted Bruce. He just threatened to k-kill me if Bruce didn't show up." Doll explained. "I'm just glad Batman showed up when he did or well, I don't want to think about what could have happened to me." She felt Bruce's grip tighten on her with every word she spoke.

"Yes, you were lucky." Gordon told him with a small smile. "I just have one more question for you and then you're free to go. The Joker for the past several months hasn't been really seen alone. He has a... partner." Gordon hesitated on the last word. Nobody really knew what to call Doll and The Jokers' relationship. "She goes by Doll. So far, all the witness statements say they were no signs of her. I know it's a long shot but he didn't say anything about her to you?"

Doll was touched that Gordon seemed worried of her whereabouts. She was well aware that Gordon treated her differently than he did The Joker. They have been playing the game of cat and mouse long before The Batman or The Joker came around.

"No, he didn't mention her. I'm sorry I can't be of more help Commissioner." Doll told him in the most polite and innocent voice she could.

"It's fine. Like I said it was a long shot. But if you happen to think of anything, anything at all, please just give me a call at the police station."

"I will," Doll promised him.

"Alright, well I think we are about done here. We should be getting out of your hair soon," he told them both but most of it was directed at Bruce since it was his home.

"It's no bother Commissioner. I'm just glad no one was seriously injured." Bruce told him with a smile.

"Yes, of course. Well, you both stay safe. Call me if you need anything else." Gordon told them. After shaking Bruce's hand, he left the two of them alone.

"Are you sure you're okay? Be honest." Bruce questioned her.

"I'm fine. Just a little shaking up I guess." Doll told him. "It's getting late; I should probably be getting home." All Doll could think of was getting home to give The Joker a piece of her mind.

"Stay." Bruce told her. Doll's eyebrows rose in surprise.

"What?" She asked genuinely surprised.

"Stay here at Wayne Manor; just for tonight. Just so I know you're safe." Bruce explained. "I'll have Alfred prepare one of the guest bedrooms for you."

Doll stared at him for several long moments. She didn't understand the billionaire's logic. The Joker just walked into Wayne Manor like he owned the place yet Bruce seemed to think it was the safest place for her. Still, Doll wasn't going to turn down the offer. Spending the night here was exactly what she needed even if she didn't plan it in the beginning. She needed access to Bruce's computer and what better way to do that then late at night when everyone would be sleeping.

"I think I will take you up on that offer. I'd feel much safer this way." She told him with a smile.

"Good, I'll let Alfred know." Bruce told her. He gave her waist one more reassuring squeeze before he let her go completely. She watched him as he walked away to find his butler. Doll let out a sigh. She finally had her personal space back.

Doll gazed around the room as she waited for Bruce to come back. All the guests had pretty much cleared out. She saw a few that still lingered to talk about what had happen. Doll rolled her eyes. Did the so-called normal people of Gotham have nothing better to do than to stand around and gossip. Her gaze landed on the abandoned refreshment table. Doll made her way over to it. Champagne glasses covered much of the surface.

Doll wasn't a drinker. Allison back in her college days as her alias Katelyn Curt had got her hands-on alcohol from some of the older students. She thought it would help her forget about her parents and silence Doll. It worked for a time but it was only a temporary fix than left Allison with a massive hang over the next morning.

Since Allison's death Doll hadn't really seen the need. Doll didn't really like things that affected her mind. Being locked up in Arkham gave her plenty of experience with drugs. She didn't like that feeling and not to mention the side effects and withdraws from them were hell. She never understood why anyone would willingly take drugs that they didn't need. But being around all the so-called normal people of Gotham made her skin crawl. Doll enjoyed her reputation she had in Gotham. She enjoyed seeing the people back away from her like she was contagious. She liked the fear that radiated off them when she walked into a room. She was small but grown men were intimidated by her; even the mob members that still existed in Gotham knew not to mess with her. Ofelia Burkley though didn't intimidate anyone. Doll felt like she was pretending to be Allison and it was exhausting.

Doll took one of the champagne glasses and emptied it quickly. Setting the empty glasses on the table Doll replaced it with a full one and drained that glass just as quick and then a third.

"Miss Burkley?" A voice questioned from behind her. Doll rolled her eyes and sighed. She grabbed a her forth glass before turning around. An older gentleman stood there watching her with worried eyes. He was dressed nicely in a full suit and Doll was sure this was Bruce's butler Alfred.

"Yes?" She questioned. She took a sip from her glass instead of gulping it down. She briefly wondered how long he had been watching her.

"I don't think we have been properly introduced. I'm Alfred Pennyworth. Master Bruce asked me to prepare a room for you for the night. It's ready for you. I thought I would show you to it, miss." He told her politely.

"Oh yes, that would be lovely." She told him finishing her glass before putting it on the table with the others before she followed him out of the ballroom.

Doll took in all of her surroundings as she followed Alfred. Doll didn't think she had ever been in a home this nice. Her parents house couldn't even compare to Wayne Manor. They passed by closed door after closed door before finally Alfred stopped in front of one.

"This will be your room for the night. I laid out some night clothes for you and they are towels and other bathroom necessities in the connecting bathroom. Feel free to use whatever you like and of course if you need something don't hesitate to ask." He informed her as he opened the door for her and gestured for her to enter.

The room was huge with a king size bed in the middle. The room was decorated in red and gold with dark cherry wood furniture. Once again Doll had never been in a room so fancy. The places she usually stayed were either abandoned buildings in the narrows with minimal furniture or there was Arkahm were she slept nine months on a twin sized bed that was bolted down to the floor. Doll didn't really sleep a lot so she didn't really put to much effort into her bedroom.

"Is the room okay?" Alfred asked as she had stood there in silence.

"Oh, yeah, the rooms great. I've just don't think I've ever seen a bedroom so large." She told him honestly. The butler chucked.

"Ah yes, I'm sure you will get used to it." He assured her.

Doll didn't know how to respond to that since she knew after tonight, she would probably never see Bruce again... at least not as Ofelia.

"Where is Bruce?" Doll asked him. She was surprised that he wasn't hanging around her since he seemed reluctant to let her go earlier.

"Master Bruce had some business to take care of. He apologizes that he couldn't say goodnight to you personally. But no worries you are quite safe here Miss Burkley. Sleep well, you have no reason to be afraid." He assured her.

Doll wasn't sure but she felt like she wasn't being told the whole truth. She shrugged it off though. Less time she had to spend playing pretend with Bruce the better.

"It's fine. I understand." She told with a smile. "Well, I guess I'll get ready for bed. Goodnight Mr. Pennyworth."

"Goodnight, Miss Burkley." He told her before she shut the door and locked it. Doll was never so glad to finally be alone.

Doll took in the room more as she stepped further into it. She saw a neatly folded bundle of clothes at the foot of the bed. Doll grabbed them. It was a simple pair of gray pajama pants and a long sleeve black t-shirt. What surprised her about the clothes was that they were way too small to belong to Bruce or Alfred. From her knowledge there was no females that lived at Wayne Manor. Bruce Wayne was known to be a player though. She remembered seeing an article about him going out with several ballet dancers several months ago so maybe he just kept female clothes around for his latest fling. Doll wasn't sure and she wasn't going to question it too much. She was happy to be able to get out of her dress.

She also found that Alfred had brought her coat and purse to the room that she had brought with her to the party which was good news for her. The purse included everything she needed to keep her scars covered. With that knowledge in mind she carried the bundle of clothes with her to the bathroom. Doll smiled when she saw the large tub and wasted no time in turning on the hot water and pushing in the plug. As the tub filled with water Doll took off her wig and stripped off all of her clothes.

The items Alfred mentioned were all laid out on the bathroom counter. There were several large fluffy white towels for her to use as well as soap, shampoo, conditioner, and even some fancy bubble bath. Grabbing the bubble bath Doll opened it to sniff it. It smelled like lavender. With a careless shrug she dumped a bunch of it into to the tub. Bringing the other items over to the awaiting tub Doll let herself relax into the hot water. The hot water turned her pale skin red but she didn't care. She sunk into the water until only her face was visible.

She had no idea how long she laid in the tub but when the water started cooling down, she hurried and washed up before getting out. After drying off she put on the new clothes and wrapped her blonde hair up into a towel. The pants ended up being a little long on her and the sleeves of the shirt covered her hands but Doll didn't mind. It was way more comfortable then the gown she had worn and it covered up all of her scars except her facial ones so it got bonus points for that.

Doll looked around the room until she found a clock on the nightstand. In big red numbers it red 10:34. She sighed she needed it to be much later before she dared to sneak out to try to find Bruce's computer. She didn't want to take the chance of running into Bruce or Alfred. To pass the time she made herself comfortable on the large bed and stared at the ceiling in deep thought.

She could still fill the light tingle of the alcohol from the champagne pumping through her blood stream. It had a calming effect on her and made her brain slow down its usual ragging thoughts. Doll wasn't sure if she liked the effect or not. Doll was use to the way her brain worked. She liked that it never seemed to stop. Thoughts were always racing and bouncing around inside her head. It was one reason that she had such difficulty sleeping.

Doll continued to stare up the ceiling as she filtered through her thoughts. She wondered what The Joker was doing. She wondered if he was worried about her since she hadn't come home yet; if that was the case, he deserved it. He created the situation after all. She also thought of Gordon and about he had no idea how close he was to her today. If he had seen through her disguise, she would be sleeping on the table in his interrogation room or back in Arkham instead of resting on a king-sized bed.

Rolling her head to look over at the clock it now read 2:05. She figured it was now late enough to begin her search. Before leaving her room, she made sure to put her wig back on and take the time to cover all her facial scars again. She didn't want to take any chances if she did get caught.

Doll opened the door to her room slowly and stuck her head out to look up and down the hallway. It was all clear. She moved quickly but quietly through the large house. She didn't know the layout unfortunately so she opened as many doors as she dared as she explored. She found herself on the bottom floor where she found the kitchen, a dining room, and the ballroom where the party was held.

Unfortunately, she had not seen Bruce's laptop anywhere. Doll was about to give up until she saw a room with its light still on. She made she her steps were silent as she crept closer. The door stood half opened. Doll didn't hear any sounds coming from inside so she pushed the door open all the way. The room was a study of some sort. Bookshelves lined the wall as well as a fireplace. The room was decorated with a few expensive looking chairs as well as a desk. A smile formed on Doll's face as she saw what was on the desk; Bruce's computer. The same one she had worked on at at Wayne Enterprises. Doll couldn't believe her luck. She quickly got to work. She pulled out a few devices from the pockets of her pajama pants and started her work on hacking Wayne Enterprises security protocols from the main boss's computer. She was almost glad that The Joker's jealously lead him here tonight because if not she wouldn't be here but she would never let him know that.

When she was finally finished, she checked the time again. It was just a few minutes pass four in the morning. She made sure to turn the computer back off and put it back in the exact spot she found it. She quietly made her way back out of the room and to the stairs to find her room again. She had just stepped on the stairs when someone called out her alias name. Doll froze.

"Ofelia, is that you?" Someone questioned. She had heard the voice enough in the last week to know it belonged to Bruce.

"Bruce, you scared me." Doll told him with her hand placed on her chest over where her heart was.

"Is everything okay?" He asked her again as he walked over to her. Doll internally groaned as he came closer and closer to her.

"I just had some trouble sleeping." She told him. Bruce gave her a sad smile. To him she was sure she seemed pitiful. The poor defenseless girl that got threatened by The Joker. "I just thought a walk would help me but I think underestimated the size of your home and I don't remember where my room is." She told him with a light laugh.

"It's fine. Follow me, I'll get you back to your room in one piece." Bruce told her as he lightly took her elbow to guide her up the stairs and to her room.

It didn't take long for Bruce to lead her back to the room she was supposed to be sleeping in. She gave him another smile before turning to go back into the room and to be away from him but of course it wouldn't be that easy. She felt his hand on her elbow again making her pause in her movements.

"I just wanted to say I'm sorry about what happened at the party. I didn't know he would target you." Bruce told her sincerely. She watched as he took another step into her personal space. There was only an inch between their bodies and Doll had tilt her head so she could see his face.

"No one could have predicted that. It's fine, really." Doll tried to reassure him as he once again invaded her personal space. She flinched when he raised a hand to trace the fresh cut on her neck. His fingers left her skin crawling. She wasn't use to anybody but The Joker touching her so intimately. "It's nothing serious. I don't think it will even scar." She assured him.

"I still fill guilty about it though." He told her.

"You don't need to. It was The Joker's doing not yours."

"I know... I just... don't want anything bad to happen to you." He confessed. "I have a bad track record when it comes to losing people that I care about."

Doll didn't know how to respond to him. She wasn't prepared for this type of situation. Her and The Jokers' relationship wasn't like anybody else's. They worked together so effortlessly. They were like two puzzle pieces from two completely different puzzles that magically fitted together perfectly.

She stood rigid as he continued to hold her and her body felt like it was being electrocuted when she felt his lips press against her own. His kiss was not like The Joker's. Bruce's kiss was soft and gentle. It wasn't demanding and Doll could have easily pushed him away... but she didn't. Instead her arms snaked their way around his broad shoulders pulling him closer to her. His hold on her tightened and he pushed her lightly into the closed door behind her. She could feel the doorknob being pressed into her back but she didn't care. Bruce kissed her passionately but yet it was still gentle.

He broke away from her to catch his breath. Doll's breathing was heavy and her heart was beating out of control in her chest. Her eyes were wide as she stared up at Bruce. She felt frozen. For once Doll didn't know what to do. This was out of her comfort zone. She had used her looks to seduce people in the past but this was different. All the other times she done this it was always for a short while and the person didn't get to know her just her looks. Bruce however seemed to be actually be falling for Ofelia Burkley and Doll didn't know what to do. She just knew that she needed to get out of this current situation and out of his house as soon as possible.

"I should probably... try to get some sleep now." She told him quietly as she slipped out of his hold. She didn't give him time to comment before she opened the door and stepped inside than shut and locked the door. Doll let a long sigh when she heard his footsteps go down the hall.

Doll tried to take advantage of the large bed and get a few hours of sleep but it didn't happen. Her mind was racing with fresh events so she just laid there still in her wig and makeup as the time slowly ticked by.
