Chapter Eleven

Unwanted Interruptions

Doll walked into Wayne Enterprises as Ofelia for the last time on Monday. Doll didn't plan to be in the building for long. She just needed to get to her computer and use the information she got from Bruce's laptop so she and The Joker could come back tonight and set up explosives without anyone being alerted. Doll made sure to show up an extra hour early so no one would be in yet.

As soon as she made it to the IT department, she made a beeline for her computer. Setting in her chair she turned on her computer and then got to work.

"Ofelia, you're here early!" A cheerful voice called out to her as Doll was finishing up.

Doll turned her chair around to see the ever-cheerful Layla making her way over to her. Doll put on a smile that was forced. She just wanted to get out of the building. She didn't know if she could do another day of pretending with these people.

"I haven't been here long," Doll lied; the clock showed she had actually been here for about forty-five minutes.

"How are you feeling?" Layla questioned her. Doll just stared at her in confusion. "Ya know, after the whole party um incident." She elaborated when Doll didn't answer.

"I'm fine." She answered simply.

"You're braver than I am. If I was in your place, I would be afraid to show my face for months." Layla told her as she came closer and leaned against Doll's desk. "I know Bruce must have felt so bad about it. Good thing Batman arrived when he did since Bruce must have not been in the room. I know he would have stepped forward to save you if he could. You can tell that he is just smitten with you." Layla rambled.

Doll half listened to her. She needed an exit strategy.

Layla finally left her alone once more people started to arrive. Doll sat at her computer staring blankly at the screen. There was no work for her to currently do even if she actually cared.

"Ofelia," the voice of Mr. Herman came from behind her before a large hand came down on her shoulder. Doll flinched at the contact.

Yes?" She questioned her voice strained.

"I need you to help Mr. Wayne's secretary with her computer." He told her. Doll closed her eyes in annoyance.

"I'll get on that right now." She told him.

Doll had no intentions of going to help Bruce's secretary; she was taking her chance to leave the building. She got into the elevator and pressed the button to take her to the lobby. Doll bounced on the balls of her feet as she waited.

When the elevator doors opened Doll rushed forward and wasted no time in getting out.

"Ofelia, whoa hold up; what's got you in such a hurry?" Bruce Wayne had been standing waiting for the elevator when she exited. He gently grabbed her shoulder to stop her quick movements. "Is everything okay? I didn't get to talk to you before you left yesterday."

"I'm fine." She assured him with a smile.

"If you're sure." He didn't seem to completely believe her but Doll could care less at this point. She just needed away from him and out of this building. "Where you leaving?" He questioned confused. Doll wished she could just shoot him and everyone else that was determined to get in her way of leaving.

"Ummm, no," Doll said her words coming out slowly. "I was actually heading to your floor but the elevator must have decided to take me here instead. I didn't even notice." She laughed.

"Well, in that case we can ride up together." Bruce told her with a large smile as he guided her back into the elevator.

Doll stood stiff next to Bruce; one of his hands lingered on her lower back. The elevator felt to small and Doll kept herself calm by counting in her head. She had counted to seventy-six when the doors finally opened.

Bruce followed her closely out of the elevator and walked beside her and stood beside her when she stopped in front of his secretary's desk.

"I was told you needed help with your computer." Doll stated. The secretary's eyes that had been staring at Bruce, who stood to close for just employee friendliness, snapped up to look at Doll's face. Doll smirked at the woman's jealousy.

"Yeah, my whole computer is just frozen. I can't get anything done." The woman explained to her.

"Well, I'll leave you two lovely ladies to get that settled." Bruce told them. His hand brushed Doll's waist as he spoke. "I hope I see you later." He gave her one last billion-dollar smile before he went into his office and closed the door. Doll sighed in relief. She felt like there was bugs crawling underneath her skin where he touched her.

"Alright, let me see what the problem is. I need to you move." Doll told the woman. She just wanted to fix the computer and then hopefully she would be able to successfully leave.

The woman who Doll didn't care enough to learn her name moved out of her chair so Doll could set in front of the computer. The woman didn't give her space though. She stood just a few inches behind her. Doll could feel her stare on the back of her head.

"Are you two together?" The woman finally asked.

Doll paused in her movements and then snapped her head to look at the woman.

"What?" Doll asked her.

The woman rolled her eyes. Doll wanted to rip them out.

"You and Bruce Wayne... are you together?" She asked.

Doll stared at the woman for a few more seconds. She now understood why so many people went crazy in Gotham; some of the citizens were so moronic it drove others to insanity.

"We're not together." Doll answered a bite to her voice. She watched as the woman raised an eyebrow at her. "What?" Doll asked trying not to lose her patience.

"Do you expect anyone to believe that? Especially after the party this weekend. Bruce Wayne hasn't showed this much real interest in a woman since Rachel Dawes." She told her.

"Bruce knew Rachel Dawes?" Doll asked genuinely surprised.

"Yeah, I think they were childhood friends or something. He was pretty broken up about what happened to her. I also think he was pretty jealous that she was dating Harvey." The woman explained.

Doll filed this information away. She didn't know why but something about Bruce being close to Rachel Dawes just stuck out to her as interesting.

"Yeah, you two seem to have a lot in common. You both have Bruce Wayne chasing after you, you both been up close and threatened by The Joker, and even been saved just in time by Batman. Hopefully, you get a happier ending though." The woman told. Doll turned back to work on the computer but she listened and soaked up everything she was being told. She of course noticed the similarities in the situation with Batman and from what she heard that had happened with Dawes... except, thankfully, The Joker didn't throw her out a window. It did make her wonder how Batman always seemed to get there at just the right time.

"I don't plain on ending up like Rachel Dawes." Doll told her truthfully.

It took Doll about a half an hour to fix the nosy secretary's computer and Doll was ready to get out of the building. Thankfully this time she was successful. She had never been happier to be back home.

She didn't run into anyone on her way to her and The Joker's bedroom which she was happy about. She didn't waste any time in stripping her clothes off and throwing them into a corner of the room. She also ripped the wig from her head and tossed it in the trashcan in the bathroom. She glanced at the mirror above the bathroom sink and grimaced. She would never get use to seeing herself without her scars... it felt wrong. She didn't exactly like her scars but it was something that was uniquely her.

It was almost midnight when The Joker, Doll, and their men made their way to Wayne Enterprises. One of their men drove the black van while they both sat in the back. Doll was setting in the floor in between The Joker's legs. Her arms were curled around his lower legs to keep herself steady. She could feel his fingers playing with her curls as he hummed under his breath.

When they neared the building, Doll made sure deactivate all the security alarms. This was to be a simple in and out operation. They didn't want to attract any unwanted attention.

A few of the men stayed with the van. A few of the more competent ones went in with The Joker and Doll. They all split up to set the explosives around the large building.

Doll skipped down the dark hallways they she had become familiar with during her time working in the building. She placed explosives every fifty feet or so in places that they could be hidden. Her last stop was Bruce Wayne's office. The door was locked but Doll had learned how to pick locks from The Joker. She was under the desk sticking the explosive to the wood when the radio in her bag started going off. She unclasped it from her side and pressed the talk button.

"What?" She asked angrily.

"Boss, we have a problem." One of their men told her. She could hear what sounded like fighting in to background. "Batman is here." He clarified. Doll's teeth clenched in anger. This was not supposed to happen. She didn't understand how Batman always showed up. It was starting to annoy her. Didn't he take nights off or something?

"Take care of him," she yelled at him before throwing the radio across the room in frustration.

She needed to find The Joker. They needed to get out of her as soon as possible. If Batman was here it meant that Gordon and the rest of the police department wasn't far behind. She knew their men wouldn't be able to hold off Batman for long.

Doll moved quickly but quietly through the building looking for any hint of The Joker. The longer it took to find him the more her anger was building. She had taken so many measures so they wouldn't be interrupted she didn't understand how Batman was here and so quickly. She wanted to know how he knew to come here.

Doll quietly opened any unlocked doors as she came to them to check for The Joker but so far, she hadn't had any luck. She stuck her head inside another office door but she saw no sign of the clown. Sighing in frustration she closed the door to continue on but before she had time to process what had happened, she was grabbed from behind and thrown into the closed door. Her head hit the door with a thud but when she saw the reason for her situation she wanted to scream in anger; Batman had found her.

"What are you doing here?" Batman questioned her as pinned her up against the door.

"I could ask you the same question." She told him. "I don't remember sending you an invite tonight. Can't you just stay out of other people's business for once!" She told him. She had prepared for this night. She had suffered through being Ofelia and what happens... Batman shows up to ruin her fun. She had never been so mad to see the flying rodent until this moment. She squirmed in his hold as she tried to free herself. The more she moved the harder his hold became.

"What are you doing here?" He asked again.

"I was wanting to blow this building into itty bitty pieces but apparently that's just too much to ask for." She told him letting her frustration leak into her voice. "I mean don't you take nights off or maybe take a nice vacation away from Gotham?" She questioned as she glared up at him.

"Give me the detonator." He commanded.

Doll couldn't help the giggles that escaped.

"Sorry, but I don't have it." She told him between her laughter. "I wanted to wait until morning; make sure that all the little busy worker bees were here first; makes for a bigger impact that way." She explained to him. "Besides, you should be thanking us. The Joker and I know you're the good guy. We just want you and Gordon to admit it. To tell the good citizens of Gotham how you lied and took the rap for Harvey Dent. I know you Batman and you wouldn't kill anyone. It's your one rule, right? I just want everyone else in Gotham to see that; to know the truth. And if I have to blow up a building and kill a few... or several of them to do so then I will; happily. I mean I've gave you several chances already to come clean. I mean how many more people am I going to have to kill for you to speak the truth?"

He slammed her back back into the door and his grip felt like it was cutting off her blood supply to her arms it was so tight. Her feet dangled above the floor as he held her there against the door.

"I'm not letting you kill anyone else. It's over." He told her in his gruff voice. Doll rolled her eyes.

"No, it's not over; not yet." As she spoke, she stretched her hand out until she could just reach the door knob. She twisted it open and as she felt herself fall backwards into the open space she kicked Batman as hard as she could so he would release his grip; and luckily for her he did. Doll didn't waste any time recovering before she jumped up and started running for the stair case. She knew Batman wouldn't be far behind her. Her goal was to reach the roof. From there she figured she could find a way down the building and then blend into the dark street below. If she didn't come across The Joker on her way than he was on his own.

She pushed open the door to the roof with a slam and she could hear footsteps not far behind her. She didn't have much time before Batman caught up to her.

The roof was just a large flat concrete square and they were four doors that connected to different stair cases to excess the roof. Doll surveyed the area but didn't see a remotely safe way to get down the building. So, with no other choice she made her way over to another door. She went to open it but before her hand could reach the knob someone on the other side slammed it open; hitting her in the face in the process and making her loose her balance. She fell backwards onto the concrete. She let out a hiss of pain and used the sleeve of her shirt to wipe the blood that leaked out from her nose.

"Oh, sorry doll-face, didn't realize you were uh on the other side." The nasally voice of The Joker reached her ears and it didn't take him long until he was standing over her with his arms outstretched to help her up. She glared at him even as he grabbed her and helped her to stand.

"I've been trying to find you. Batman crashed our party." She told him.

"Yeah, I know. Your precious Commissioner Gordon and some of Gotham's other men in blue are here as well." He told her. Doll just wanted to scream. This was not supposed to happen. She worked so hard and it was all falling apart around her.

"We need to get out of this building." She told him. He hadn't let go of her from where he had helped her up and he continued to hold on to her as he made his way over to one of the other doors but it was locked so they rushed over to the next one. They didn't reach the door in time before the door Doll came out of opened to revel Batman. The Joker sneered at the interruption.

"Batsy I know I usually love when you join our nights out but not this one." The Joker told him as he pushed Doll behind him. Doll's eyes shot daggers at him for the protective move. She didn't need protection.

The Joker licked his scars as he prepared for a show down with The Batman. Before he moved he gave her a meaningful look. He wanted her to leave him. Well, at least if he goes to Arkham she could get him out. So with a nod she opened the door and started her journey down the stairs; leaving The Joker to deal with Batman.

Doll made it down one floor when she heard the echo of footsteps that didn't belong to her. She paused to listen and pulled out her gun from her bag.

"Any sign of Doll or The Joker?" The voice of Commissioner Gordon questioned. She assumed he was talking over the radio to his back up officers. She continued to listen quietly.

"Not yet, we are almost to the roof." She heard an answer a moment later.

"Same here, I should be there soon. Be careful and watch each others back." Gordon told the officer. She listened as he made his way up the stairs getting closer and closer to her. Doll squared her shoulders and pointed her gun just waiting for him to turn the corner. As soon as he spotted her he paused when he saw the gun pointed at him.

"You really weren't suppose to be here, Commissioner." She told him.

"Doll, just put down the gun. It's over. No one needs to get hurt." Gordon spoke to her calmly.

No," she answered him. "First Batman and now you... this is not how this night was suppose to go!" She told him infuriated.

"Doll, we don't have to do this. Just put the gun down and come with me without a fight." He tried again. Doll laughed at him but kept her gun pointed at him. She wasn't quite sure if she could really shoot Gordon. She liked Gordon. He had been there sense the beginning. If it was any other officer that found her first she would have already shot them and moved on.

"Gordon, are you there?" A voice came from his radio. Gordon raised an eyebrow in question towards her. Doll rolled her eyes but nodded. Gordon slowly reached for his radio that was attached to his police vest and pressed the button to answer.

"Yeah, I am here. What is it?" He questioned.

"The Joker's down." The officer told him.

Doll's whole body tensed as that sentence echoed in her ears. She walked down a few steps to be closer to Gordon and her gun pressed against his forehead.

"I'm sorry, what?" Gordon asked as he stared into Doll's cold blue eyes.

"He's been shot, sir." The officer clarified. "Any sign of Doll?" He asked. Gordon didn't reply as he watched Doll. This situation didn't seem good for him. "Sir?" The officer tried again.

"You better hope that when we get up there that he is still alive. For you and your officers sake." Doll told him.

Doll had took Gordon's handcuffs from him and cuffed his hands behind his back. She also took his gun from the holder and tucked it into the waist band of her skirt. With her gun pressed against the back of his head she marched him back up the stairs to the roof. Doll kicked the door open and let Gordon be her human shield.

Three officers stood on the roof along with The Joker lying a few feet from them; silent and not moving. Batman was no where to be seen. Doll pushed on Gordon until he fell to his knees in front of her. She used her other hand to pull Gordon's gun out and point it in the general direction of the officers as their guns were trained on her as well. She kept her gun pressed against the back of Gordon's head in warning to them though.

"I will shoot him if any of you just breathe in a way I don't like." She told him. "Is he still alive?" She asked them her voice low. Gordon had been threatened by Doll before but this was the first time he could honestly say he felt truly in danger of dying by her hand.

None of the officers answered her.

"I asked is he still alive?" She shouted at them.

"Answer her!" Gordon advised them.

"Yeah, yeah he's still breathing for now. I shot him in the shoulder twice." One of the officers informed her. Doll's gaze zeroed in on him and in a blink of an eye she shot him twice once in each leg.

"Doll, please the longer you stand here the worse this situation gets for everyone." Gordon spoke to her calmly.

"Your officers shot him! Do you think I care about them. I will kill all of your officers and it wouldn't make a difference to me. You shouldn't even be here Gordon!" She told him.

"Just put the guns down. I'll get an ambulance here. I'll get him medical attention. You just have to put the guns down and corporate." Gordon told her. "You corporate and you have my word that you won't be harmed either." She watched Gordon gave a look of warning to the other officers to listen to him. No one else needed to be harmed tonight. Gordon waited and a few seconds later he was awarded with Doll lowering the guns and placing them on the ground before she kicked them away to the edge of the roof.

She bent down so she was his height as he was still on his knees. He felt her grab a hold of the chain of the handcuffs.

"Now keep your word Gordon." She told him her lips brushing against his right ear as she took the key for the handcuffs and unlocked them for him. She watched as he spoke into his radio to request an ambulance to there location immediately.

She felt the eyes of everyone on her as she moved over to The Joker's body. Gordon followed a few steps behind her. Doll dropped to her knees to examine him. His clothes were soaked with his blood and Doll removed her own jacket to press against his wounds to try to slow the bleeding. He was breathing but just barely.

Doll's mind froze as she stared at him. The Joker was her other half. A misfit puzzle piece that connected perfectly to her. He understood her and didn't try to change her or fix her. He thought she was perfect just the way she was. She knew she would never find anyone else like that. He couldn't die. She wouldn't let him. She would do anything to keep that from happening. Even if it meant that their whole plan came to a horrible ending and she gave herself up. She knew Gordon would keep his word.

Gordon hovered just a few steps behind her as he watched her. He had never seen Doll seem so human. She had never shown any compassion for another person before that he almost couldn't believe it. She ignored them all as she tended to The Joker as best as she could. He just prayed that he survived until the ambulance arrived.

When the EMTs arrived on the scene Gordon grabbed onto Doll's shoulders to pry her away from The Joker so they could attend to him. He was surprised when she didn't fight him. It was like she melted into his embrace. He could feel her shaking and he wasn't sure if it was from the cold wind or if she was holding back her emotions. Gordon pulled her closer to him; her back pressed against his chest and she didn't resist. She just watched as they took The Joker away to get him to the ambulance along with the officer she had shot.

"Doll," Gordon spoke to her softly. "I need you to continue to corporate. I need to cuff you and bring you to the station." He explained to her. She didn't respond. "Doll," he tried getting her attention.

It took a few seconds before she turned to face him. He had never seen Doll look so broken. Her hair was a tangled mess and her face paint was almost nonexistent and below her nose was dried blood and her nose and under her left eye was starting to bruise. She had a cut above her right eyebrow that was still bleeding slightly. Her eyes were blood shot and Gordon thought they looked misty; like she was holding back tears. She didn't say a word she just held her hands out towards him. With a heavy sigh Gordon took a hold of them and put them behind her back and used the handcuffs that only moments before had been on him.

"Alright, come on. Let's get off this damn roof." He told her as he lead her down the stairs gently.

She was quiet the entire journey to the police station and she didn't resist when he lead her to the all familiar integration room. Once they were in the room he undid the cuffs for her and he watched her rub her wrists once they were free. She moved over to the table and hopped on top of it bringing her feet so they were crossed in front of her and she rested her elbows on her knees as her blue eyes stared at him her head tilted to the right.

"Well, here I am. In your little cage again." It was the first words she spoke to him since she agreed to stand down. "What now?"

"You're going to tell me what you were doing at Wayne Enterprises while we wait to hear news from the hospital about The Joker and Officer Ayers." Gordon told her. Doll sighed dramaticly as she let her top half fall onto the table her arms spreading out like wings.

"Officer Ayers could die for all I care. His life doesn't matter to me. What's one more death added to my record." Doll told him as she stared up at the ceiling. "And as for the building. It was all part of our little game Gordon. I just wanted to blow it up. It's not like Wayne couldn't eventually build another one. I mean the guy destroyed his own house and built it back. Sure a few workers might have perished but I was willing to take that chance. After all I gave you several chances for you and Batman to come clean and you just kept ignoring me. You forced me to do something more drastic." She explained to him.

"You murdered people." Gordon told her; she shrugged carelessly. "You abducted and murdered the DA's wife and daughter. I saw what you did to that girl! You tortured Allison Faye before you put her out of her misery!" Gordon's voice raised as he remembered Allison's broken body that was found along with her mother's body on the step just outside the police station. It was the worse crime in his opinion that Doll had committed. The girl didn't even look human. Her autopsy showed that she had six broken fingers, nails were hammered into her hands, parts of her skin had been peeled off, and her head had been bashed in with a hammer. The once beautiful girl who had her whole life a head of her died because two people wanted to play a pointless game.

Doll raised up so she was back to setting on top of the table. Her eyebrows were raised and she watched Gordon who radiated anger. She had never seen Gordon like this; he had never raised his voice to her. She wasn't quite sure what to make of it.

"Faye.. that was her last name." Doll mumbled to herself. She could feel Gordon's glare on her. "Come on Gordon, what do you want me to say? That I'm sorry because I won't. I'm not a liar. She and her dear mother were nothing but a message to be delivered to you to try to get you and dear Batman to tell the truth." She told him her voice cold and emotionless.

Gordon could feel his anger reaching it's limit. He turned to leave before he did something he would regret. He just needed some time to clear his head. It had been a very long night. If he lost his temper he knew Doll would just enjoy it. She enjoyed getting people to reach their limit; it's what she tried to do in any conversation. With out saying a word he left her alone in the interrogation room.

When the door slammed shut behind Gordon, Doll fell back onto the table to stare up at the ceiling. She wasn't exactly thrilled to be left alone with only her own mind to keep her busy. She wanted to be distracted. Alone made her remember why she was here. That The Joker's life was on the line. She knew he had lost a lot of blood and that his medical treatment would be limited. After all he was a criminal... a mass murderer that terrorized Gotham. She couldn't honestly believe that the doctor's would try their best out of the goodness of their heart to keep him alive.

To keep her mind off of the possibility of loosing him forever she played the events of the past few days over in her mind. She needed to know where she went wrong. She needed to know how Batman knew to come to Wayne Enterprises on this night at that moment. It just was to big of a coincidence. Some how she had over looked something and she was determined to figure out what it was. It wasn't like she was going anywhere soon. So Doll spent her time alone going over every detail.
