Chapter Twelve

Behind the Mask

"Is she tearing up the place?" Gordon questioned as he made his way closer to the officers standing outside the one-way mirror of the interrogation room. The two officers were the two unharmed ones from the roof top.

"No, she uhhh she's just lying on the table." One of the officer's answered.

"We think she's still breathing but she hasn't moved in a while." Another one told him.

Gordon shook his head. Of course, neither one of them was going to go check on her. After what happened to The Joker, she was hostile and emotional; not a good thing for anyone to be subjected to. As always, she was left to Gordon to deal with.

When he stepped into the room Doll didn't move a muscle. He couldn't tell if she was unconscious or even breathing from his position near the door.

"Doll?" He called out trying to get her attention; still no movement. With a heavy sigh he moved closer to her. He didn't stop until he was standing beside the table she was on. He thankfully could see that she was breathing but her eyes were closed. It wasn't the first time he had seen Doll in this position.

"Doll?" He tried calling for her again. He watched her closely but she showed no signs of hearing him; not even a twitch.

He took this time to study her. He could understand if she had passed out. He didn't think she was in need of immediate medical help but she received her fair share of injuries. Her nose was swollen and bruised and so was under her left eye. She had dried blood under her nose and a cut above her right eyebrow that had just recently stopped bleeding. Even if she had a concussion, she was in much better shape than The Joker was currently. The Joker was sent to the recently rebuilt Gotham General to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds. Gordon knew The Joker was lucky that he got any medical care due to who he was and Gordon would be surprised if he survived at all.

Gordon let out a long, heavy sigh. If The Joker didn't make it he knew that Doll would be a force to be reckoned with. Gordon never thought it was possible but he knew she actually cared for The Joker. It was easy to see after the show down on the roof of Wayne Enterprises. The only way he could stop her from killing anyone was to tell her he would get him medical help.

"Doll, I need you to wake up. You might have a concussion." Gordon tried speaking to her again. He gently shook her shoulder to see if he could get a response… and he did.

Doll was quick to set up on the table with her face now only inches away from Gordon's. She didn't say anything but her blue eyes stared into his brown ones until he made himself break the gaze.

"I'm glad to see you are okay." Gordon told her.

"How's The Joker?" She asked.

He cleared his throat and ran a hand through his hair. He was not looking forward to this conversation.

"Not so good. He lost a lot of blood and hasn't woken up at all." Gordon told her. He watched her for any sign of threat but she just continued to stare at him. "Doll, I'm sure the hospital staff is doing their best but," Doll cut him off before he could finish.

"Do you think I'm stupid?" Doll asked him. She didn't give him time to answer. "You expect me to believe that the hospital is really trying to save him?"

"Doll, I know how this works; trust me I know. But there is nothing I can do about it. He's a criminal." Gordon told her keeping his voice as soothing as he could.

"Of course, they don't want to waste precious supplies on him." Doll told him. Gordon watched as a large smile spread across her face; an expression he wasn't expecting to see. "I want to speak to Batman!"

"Why?" he questioned.

"Because, if you don't than I will find a way out of here or whatever cage you send me to and I will tear Gotham apart starting with your family." Doll threatened and Gordon felt it in his bones that she was serious. "All I want is a few minutes of the flying rodents time… just the two of us."

Gordon didn't see the harm. It wasn't like Batman couldn't take care of himself. "I'll be back."

"Hurry back!" Doll called after him as he left the interrogation room.

Doll didn't have to wait long for her demand to be answered. Twenty minutes after Gordon had left the door to the interrogation room opened again but this time Batman was her guest.

She was setting in the middle of the table with her legs crossed as she smiled at him. With her injuries and the dried blood on her face she truly looked unhinged with her large smile.

Batman stood just a few steps away from the closed door watching her. He had no idea what she wanted from him.

"Ahh there he is. Just the rodent that I wanted to see." Doll greeted him.

"What do you want?" He asked her getting straight to the point.

"First are you sure we're alone? I personally don't mind but you probably don't want anyone hearing our conversation." Doll told him.

Doll watched as Batman gave a small nod of his head towards the large mirror in the room. She figured Gordon was on the other side and that was his signal to let him know that it was okay to leave.

"It's just us. Now what do you want?" He told her.

"I want the best medical treatment for The Joker that money can buy and you are going to pay the bill… in advance... immediately." She told him simply.

"You expect me to pay for The Joker's medical bills?" He questioned. He was not expecting that to be the reason he was here.

"Well… when I say you... I really mean Bruce Wayne." Doll told him with a smile stretching even wider across her face.

He stared at her.

"I'm sorry, but I don't know Mr. Wayne that personally." He tried to tell her but all he got in response was hysterical laughter. He watched as she slid herself off the table and made her way over to him. She was practically skipping like a child.

"No, no, no," she told him waving a finger at him like he was a naughty child. "You can't play that game. I know that you know Bruce Wayne very well. So well in fact that I know whose face is really behind that mask." She stared up at him waiting for his reaction. "You see sometimes I like to play dress up and for the past couple of weeks I've gotten to know Bruce Wayne on a… personal level. Because of this I've noticed a lot of things about him that just don't add up. Since Gordon locked me away in his little box, I've had some time to think about all that's happened since I've gotten to know him."

"You see, I disabled the alarms for Wayne Enterprises from Bruce's personal computer. I got the one that would alert him at his house, at the police department, you know the usual things. However, you still showed up just at the right time even before the ever-dedicated Commissioner Gordon. So, with all this time being trapped in here it got me thinking. I obviously missed something which is very unlike me." She explained to him.

"Also being on the other side of Bruce Wayne's parties really got me thinking. Batman always shows up to them and so quickly. I never thought to much on it because I like playing with you. But then at the last party that The Joker crashed Bruce Wayne left me all on my own and he vanished without a trace but then Batman showed just in time to save me from The Joker's clutches. I did end up getting a nice little cut." She told as she tilted her head up so he could see the thin cut that she, as Ofelia, received from The Joker.

His mask didn't really allow her to see any facial expressions but she could tell that his jaw was clenched tightly and his eyes were glaring daggers at her. She knew she was right.

"You were the girl that The Joker threatened." He stated.

"Oh, I was much more than that. I was the girl you let stay over in your home because you were worried about my safety. I was the girl you kissed passionately against the doorway in the middle of the night." She told him. "Bruce Wayne the Billionaire playboy… I think not. Bruce Wayne Gotham's very own vigilante sounds more accurate."

Doll expected anger or surprise what she didn't expect was full on violence. He moved so fast Doll didn't have time to respond before he grabbed her and slammed her on to the metal table with more strength then she felt he usually used on her. One of his hands held her down while the other was on her throat. His grip wasn't enough to cut off her oxygen but it didn't make breathing easy either. Doll's blue eyes were wide as she stared up at the masked vigilante. Batman always prided himself on his one rule of not killing anyone but she wondered if she pushed him too far. She knew in a fare fight with no way to escape it was unlikely for her to win against Batman.

"This is an unexpected reaction." She choked out. "If I knew you liked it this ruff, I might have let you take our relationship further than that little kiss. You thought Ofelia was so innocent but she likes its hard." Doll told with a smile. She moved her legs that were freely dangling off the end of the table with Batman in the middle so they wrapped around his middle essentially move him closer to her. It took him by surprise and he let his grip on her neck go and that hand moved to the table to help balance himself above her. His masked face was just an inch away from her and their breaths mingled as they stared at each other. Doll leaned up and closed the distance. Her lips moved against his and when he didn't respond she bit down on his lip until she tasted blood. He used his body weight to slam her back down on the table. The back of her head banged into the table making her vision blurry for a bit. Her poor head had taken such a beating today that even Doll was having a hard time ignoring the throbbing pain. But for now, she had too.

So instead of focusing on the pain she let out another round of hysterical laughter.

"What? You don't want to kiss me anymore?" She questioned. She watched as he stepped away from her. "Speechless? I have that effect on people sometimes." She told him as she moved so she was setting on the table with her feet dangling over the edge. She rubbed the back of her head sending him a glare. "So, now that we got all the foreplay out of the way let's get down to business. You're going to use your money to save The Joker or I will make sure that every criminal in Gotham knows who Batman really is. You save The Joker I'll keep your dirty little secret between us for forever. Oh, and don't think locking me up will solve the problem. I will find a way to get the word out. So, how about it... do we have a deal?" Doll stuck her hand out for him to shake in agreement.

"How do I know that I can trust you?" He asked.

"I'm a lot of things but I'm not really a liar. It's much easier to just tell the truth. I keep my word. You've had to notice that. I always make good on my promises." She told him still with her hand out to him.

"What if The Joker still dies?" He questioned.

"Your secrets still safe. Gotham maybe not so much." She told him honestly.

She was almost surprised when he finally took her hand in his gloved one and gave it a firm shake; so firm she almost thought he was doing it on purpose. Bruce Wayne felt like he was making a deal with The Devil but he didn't know what other choice he had. He knew Doll would make good on her threat but one bright side is even if The Joker survived once he was healed enough, he would be sent to Arkham and so would Doll.

"You made the best choice. Now, go use your real superpower to save my clown!" She told him and watched with a large grin on her face as he left. Doll gracefully fell back onto the table. Her tongue darted out of her mouth to taste Bruce's blood that was on her lips. Play time with Batman would defiantly be interesting from now on. She just had to make sure The Joker never found out about any of this.
