Chapter Fifteen
Back to Arkham
Gordon arrived back at the police station at 9:00 A.M. exhausted after only a few hours of sleep. He carried with him a large cup of coffee and a bag of breakfast for Doll and himself. On his way to his office to drop off his briefcase and coat, he ran into the two police officers that were unharmed from the roof top. Their names were Aaron Collins and Jason Haywood and they didn't look happy.
"Can I help you?" He asked them finally when they just stood there in his office door not saying anything. Gordon was too tired to deal with that.
"We saw what you did." Officer Haywood told him.
Gordon's eyebrows rose in question. He didn't understand what they were talking about.
"I don't know what you mean." Gordon told them.
"What we mean is we saw that you gave her a blanket and a pillow… and I see you also brought her breakfast again today." Officer Collins explained to him.
"Yeah, why does she get special privileges? She is one of Gotham's top wanted criminals she doesn't deserve any kindness. She doesn't show Gotham any." Haywood chimed in.
Gordon let out a tired sigh. This is not how he wanted his morning to begin. No one had ever questioned him on how he handled Doll because no one else wanted to deal with her.
"Look," he began, "I know you are upset about what happened to Ayers, I am too. But she is still a human being who deserves some kindness. I also don't see anyone else volunteering on checking on her. The last time I left her in charge with other officers they put her in the holding cells with the other prisoners, who right now are her and The Joker's most recent employees. Do you know what happened? She escaped. I might have got the job as being Commissioner under horrible circumstances but I also got it because I'm good at my job. So, unless one of you want to take her meals and escort her to the bathroom, and doing so in a calm manner to keep her from being hostile, I suggest you let me do my job my way." Gordon told them. "Now if that's all I want to go enjoy my coffee and breakfast."
Gordon slipped past them and he could feel their gaze follow him down the hall but he didn't care. His treatment of Doll got her to open up and speak to him about her past. He had no intentions of breaking his promise to her about keeping it between the two of them. He was perfectly okay with this. Other people knowing her identity wouldn't help her anyway.
He turned the lights on in the interrogation room and walked in. Doll wasn't asleep this time; he could see that her eyes were open. She was still lying on the table with the pillow under her head and she was wrapped up in the blanket as she stared up at the ceiling.
"Good morning, Gordon." Doll spoke to him. Her voice was cheerful. Gordon expected her to be the opposite since later today she would be taken to Arkham. "I didn't except you this early since you pulled a long night."
"I thought you might want some breakfast." He told her as he held up the bag to show her.
She set up on the table with the blanket around her shoulders.
"Is it pancakes again?" She asked with a smile.
"I thought we might try something a little different this morning. I brought us French Toast with eggs and sausage." Gordon told her as he moved to put the bag down on the table to give her the container of food. "I hope that is okay?"
"That's fine." She told him. "Anything is better than the food at Arkham which I will soon be able to enjoy again."
"Yeah, they're supposed to be sending people to get you around 3:00 I think… so if you behave, I'll bring you a pizza for lunch." He said.
"Gordon, I sometimes wonder about your sanity. I do know that this is all special treatment and don't get me wrong I like it. I enjoy that you bring me food when I'm trapped in your little box. I just want to know why you do it? I mean if today was the first day you did it than I could maybe understand. The first time you did it I understood. You brought me here to help you catch The Joker. You wanted me to be comfortable so you gave me a few privileges. But yesterday I had just shot one of your fellow officers after trying to blow up Wayne's big tower. You had no incentive to bring me anything." Doll explained to him as she watched his every move as he removed items from the bag.
"Your right, I don't need to give you any extra privileges. Two of my officers, the ones unharmed from the roof, just questioned me about this too. Said that I shouldn't bring you outside food or give you a pillow and a blanket." Gordon told her as he slid her food over to her. Doll rose her eyebrows as she waited for him to finish his little rant. "But I'm the Commissioner and my job is to make sure while you are in my custody that you don't escape and that you don't hurt anyone else."
"So, bringing me food… is a bribe to behave?" Doll questioned him confused.
"Yes, well no," he began. Doll continued to stare at him in confusion even as a small smile started creeping up on her face. "You're still human." He finally said.
Doll stared at him but he didn't say anything else.
"Well, yeah that's good of you to notice. I will admit that some people might think that it is up for debate." She commented.
"What I mean is you still deserve some kindness." Gordon finally settled on saying.
"So, this kindness that I deserve I happen to know that it doesn't extend to The Joker." She reminded him. "But I guess he hasn't spent as much time quality time with you and your little box."
"I could have not called an ambulance for him at all," Gordon reminded her. "Any other officer probably wouldn't have."
"And I could have shot those other two officers and according to how I was feeling afterwards I might have even shot you," was her response.
Gordon cleared his throat.
"Can we drop this and eat our breakfast in peace? My coffee is getting cold." He asked.
Doll shrugged before she moved to take a seat at the table and bringing her container of food with her. He took the other seat and passed her a small carton of milk and a bottle of orange juice.
"No coffee this time?" She asked him with a teasing smirk.
"I learned my lesson yesterday." He replied. She had left her coffee to be undrunk and cold.
"For future visits I prefer tea." She told him with a small before she started on eating her breakfast.
"I'll keep that in mind." Gordon told her. As much as he wanted to believe he had no doubt that he would be dealing with her on the street again. Like she has always said Arkham is just a vacation.
"Have you heard anything more about The Joker?" Doll tried to ask it casually and emotionless but he could tell she cared.
"The last update that I got was that he was doing well; no lasting damage which is good. I was told he would be well enough to be transferred to Arkham in a few weeks." Gordon told her all the details he knew.
"I want to say that's good… but we're both ending back up in Arkham so…" She ended with a shrug.
"True," Gordon agreed.
It was times like this that made Gordon wish that Doll could have a normal life; something that he now knew she never had. She came from a broken and abused home and had never really been shown kindness growing up. As they finished up their breakfasts, he pondered what would have happened if the table had been turned and The Joker was here and Doll had been shot. Would The Joker done the same thing to save Doll or would he have just saved himself, Gordon wondered.
"How's your head feeling this morning?" Gordon asked as they were finishing up their breakfast.
Doll lightly touched the back of her head and winced. The knot was not as painful as yesterday but it still hurt.
"I've had worse," she shrugged. Gordon shook his head.
"Alright, well if it starts bothering you let me know. I'll have someone look at it again before you get sent off to Arkham." Gordon told her.
"Ohh would I get to see the riddle man Mr. Nygma again?" Doll asked him with a growing smile. Gordon however was not amused. Anytime Doll became attached to someone it generally was not good for the other person.
"No, I would have one of our actual medical examiners look you over." Gordon told her. He watched her deflate and a frown replace her smile.
"Aww but Gordon he was so much fun." She told him with a pout.
"I sometimes don't like your version of fun." He stated. She shrugged.
"It is an acquired taste but I do keep you on your toes." She replied with a smile that showed her teeth.
"That you do." Gordon agreed.
Gordon spent most of his day with Doll inside the interrogation room; sometimes talking about random, meaningless things and other times just setting in silence. Around noon he left her to go get them lunch; a pizza as promised for her good behavior. They enjoyed the greasy pizza and Gordon watched in amusement as Doll plucked off the pepperonis and ate them first. He had never seen anyone so obsessed with pizza.
Gordon stayed away from mentioning anything about her past and she didn't bring it up. It looked like she was just going to ignore that he knew anything; Gordon was okay with that. As the time ticked on getting closer to three, he felt discontent.
He was very aware that Doll needed to be locked up but he detested that it seemed like her only option was Arkham Asylum. The place did nothing to help her; he doubted any of the doctors would even try to treat her this time. The fear the doctors had was somewhat reasonable and Doll's own doing but he also figured Doll's behavior towards them came from boredom and their own attitudes towards her. He knew that she didn't like being talked down to nor did she like people feeling completely safe in her presence. She had attacked several people because they had underestimated her and she simply wanted to prove them wrong.
Three guards from Arkham showed up at the police station at five minutes till three. None of the guards looked particularly happy to have to escort Doll to their facility and Gordon felt their pain. He knew Doll's calmness around him usually didn't extend to others. He just hoped she would corporate.
To be transported she had to be put in a straight-jacket and Gordon stayed in the room while they put one on her. Thankfully for everyone she didn't put up a fight.
"Well Gordon I guess this is goodbye… for now anyway." Doll told him as two of the guards stood on either side of her with one hand on her shoulder to lead her out of the building.
"I'll try to come visit so you won't get bored." Gordon told her with a very small smile.
"It will take much more than that for me to not be bored." She told him. "But a visit from you wouldn't be so bad."
"Behave yourself." Gordon told her.
He watched as she softly giggled.
"Where is the fun in that?" She questioned between her giggles. Gordon gave her a stern look in return. "Fine, dad I'll do my best." She told him with a roll of her blue eyes and her voice dripping in sarcasm.
"You better." He said. "I'll visit you soon." He promised her.
With a feeling of discontent Gordon watched as the guards escorted her out of the building and into the vehicle to take her to Arkham. He was just glad that he knew Doll was strong enough to take whatever they tried to throw at her in the asylum.
Gordon left the police station at five that evening. He let out a large sigh as he walked out of the building. Doll had been successfully transferred to Arkham with no issues. Gotham was the safest it had been in a long time but Gordon knew it wouldn't stay that way. Gotham seemed to be a breading ground for the most unusual of criminals. If it wasn't the Doll or The Joker it would be someone else. But until that happened Gordon and the rest of Gotham would enjoy the break from the fear and insanity that the chaotic duo brought down upon the city.
