Chapter 2: The things we lost in fire
Am I dead?
That's the only thing Ezra could think at the moment. Then he thought again. If he was dead, then he wouldn't be thinking that. Right? And he wouldn't feel pain. And he wouldn't hear that persistent ringing.
Prying his eyes open, he confirmed it. He wasn't dead.
What exactly had happened? Weakly turning his head to look back, answered his question. Of course. The explosion. Ezra was helping some rebels escape and he was going to assist a injured one when it happened. The detonator was set off.
The blast had sent them sideways to the ground. Hard. It explained why he felt so sore. And man, his head. It hurt terribly. Especially his ears. He found himself clutching at the the sides of his head. The rest of his aches felt like nothing compared to the sharp pain there.
Someone nudging him, made Ezra snap out it. He saw the other rebel, who had crawled all the way to him. His lips were moving, forming words, but none of them reached his ears and the young Jedi could only guess what he was saying.
'Are you ok?!'
Groaning, Ezra lifted himself from the floor. Ignoring the soreness, he helped the rebel up, throwing his arm over his own shoulders.
"I'm ok. We have to go.", he replied, hoping he said the right thing.
Luckily for him, the ringing was starting to subdue, so that meant that he would be able to hear things properly again.
Groups of stormtroopers were no problem, as they were no match for Ezra. Carefully deflected shots and they were all down. As the last patrol got put down, he returned to get his companion back. While he was supporting him, he couldn't help but notice the look of worry that formed on the rebel's face.
Again, Ezra couldn't exactly make out what he said, but it was something that sounded (looked?) like a gasp.
'Your ears... They are bleeding!'
The Jedi stared at him confused for a few moments, but didn't take him long to realize that he wasn't wrong. Looking down at his hands there was some red. He then noticed the trail of still warm liquid that had trickled down the sides of his face, down his neck and eventually stained the cloth. He was so busy that he didn't notice.
Another terrifying realization dawned on him. There was nothing to hear. The ringing had long stopped and he still couldn't hear anything. What the soldier was saying, the blasts from the stormtroopers' weapons, the sound of his own lightsaber... He was... No it couldn't be, it just couldn't...
Ezra shook his head. "It doesn't matter now. We have to go to the Ghost and get out of here."
The duo quickly made it to the place where the freighter had touched down, the freighter Ezra had come to call home. On the ramp, Zeb was helping the soldiers he had escorted on the ship. It seems that somehow the Jedi's group had made it on the Ghost first, without any shortcomings.
The Lasat noticed them and mouthed something Ezra struggled to lipread. It is harder with non-humans, he figured out. 'Wh-... so long?... on!'
"Sabine's here?"
'Yes, she...-fore me.'
So far, noone except for the soldier from earlier seemed to have noticed his bleeding ears because of his somewhat long hair, and Ezra was somewhat grateful for that. He didn't want anyone to panic. Here he should have been panicking about it! So he would rather tell them when he felt ready, as to not cause chaos within the crew.
He quickly headed to the upper floor. Despite wanting to go to the fresher and get rid of the blood, Ezra headed for the cockpit. Sitting in the back seat, he kept low, hoping that noone would notice.
It seemed like Hera and Sabine had greeted him upon entrance, but he would never know. After the ship had taken off, avoiding the shots coming from the entrance, the two females had settled for a conversation Ezra wished he could hear.
Then Chopper entered. The Jedi didn't know until the droid entered his field of vision, so his sudden appearance surprised him slightly. After that things went downhill.
Chopper backed away, rotating his dome towards the women and then to Ezra. Probably he had warbled something to get their attention. Sabine's gaze fell on Ezra and then she gasped (or cried out. It wasn't really clear). Horror was visible in her expression.
He didn't need his hearing to understand what she said next. 'What's wrong with your ears?!'
Hera immediately wiped around and her eyes widened. Setting the ship at autopilot at once, the pilot went over to Ezra. Carefully looking over him for any kind of injuries, she confirmed the source of the bleeding.
'Ezra? What happened? Is there ... want to tell us?'
The teen was almost sure that Hera was using her strict tone. Guilt crossed his features and he didn't reply anything at all. It wasn't that he didn't understand what she said, he understood alright.
Ezra lowered his gaze to the ground, trying to avoid both Hera and Sabine's. The horrible truth had been uncovered.
Zeb entered the cockpit next. Again Ezra didn't realize until he saw him. This time he couldn't read what he said. But the expression that followed after that said it all.
Hera sighed. 'Ezra. Medbay. Now.'
With the landing of the Ghost in the base, Kanan felt a lot of negativity flood the place. It was worry, dismay, some sort of grief. That couldn't mean something good.
He tried to read Ezra's side of the bond, the bond he had long left neglected, just to find out that he couldn't. His apprentice had blocked out the connection. That scared Kanan all the more
After around half an hour, Hera walked up to him. He could feel her aura full of the feelings he experienced earlier, now a hint of sadness there too.
"Kanan... We need to talk.", she talked eventually, her voice sounding slightly shaky.
"Something happened at the mission?"
Hera relayed to Kanan all the report Ezra and Sabine had given to explain what exactly happened. The blind Jedi was already getting a very bad feeling about what he would hear next, but he didn't interrupt until she was done.
"Is Ezra alright? Is he hurt?"
"Not exactly... That explosion back there was too loud and he was too close. The medics say that his eardrums ruptured completely. Kanan... He's deaf."
A/N: I honestly didn't expect I'd update that quickly.
So yeah. Blueberry is deaf.
I have noticed that there were many times in the Star Wars universe that despite the fact characters have been ridiculously close to explosions countless of times, they still seem to be fine. Not that it bothers me, but it rather had me curious.
Now, I mainly wrote this, because I would like to explore the dynamics between a blind master and a deaf apprentice. It must be... quite interesting.
I got inspiration from some MCSM fanfic yet again which explores such a scenario and I wanted to try my skills at writing said scenario.
That's all... See you in the next chapter!
