Chapter 3: Silence
Kanan didn't know what he was to expect when stepping in the common room. Anything could play, especially when he waited out three days before actually coming to the point of talking to Ezra.
He just needed some time to let the fact sink in. His apprentice was now deaf. Just like he wouldn't be able to see anything again, Ezra wouldn't be able to hear anything again.
Kanan worried about how the teen would react if he appeared now. What if he took it the wrong way? After all, he had been avoiding him for a long while and now that he learnt something bad happen he started to worry. Probably in his current position, pity was the last thing Ezra would want.
Entering the room, Kanan felt three presences. The two turned to face him first and the third did so just because he noticed his companions. The blind Jedi, just by reading their signature, he could tell what kind of expressions they had at that moment. The Mandalorian and the Lasat were probably frowning knowing expressions, hints of worry and doubt hidden in there. The Lothalian orphan most likely had a neutral expression as cover for his frustration.
Hearing multiple steps, Kanan knew that the first two had left the room, leaving him and Ezra alone. A silence fell upon them. Then again, silence was the only thing Ezra could hear, so he doubted silence was even a suitable word to use anymore.
"Hera told me what happened.", Kanan spoke eventually.
Ezra didn't reply, either because he didn't make to read what he said, or maybe even didn't get in the cope to read it. The older male sighed and took a seat in the table, deciding not to say anything else for the time being.
"They said that I won't be going on missions anymore. Until we figure out what to do with... this situation.", Ezra said, the last two words most likely joined by some kind of gesture.
Kanan could now feel his gaze on him, probably the teen now expected some response. It made sense, now that he was deaf, the only way he would know that someone was talking was by watching their lips move.
"It's... probably for the best.", he replied slowly.
Again, none of them said anything. Even after a month or so of being away from each other, there was nothing left to say. There was so much to catch up on, so many things happened in this one month, and yet, there was this silence.
Silence. This blasted word.
"How you've been coping?", Kanan asked, making sure he got Ezra's attention first.
Ezra sat up, and looked down at the floor. "I don't think I'm coping... In a way, everything's as it always was, just with this one bit missing. It's weird that I can't even hear my own voice anymore."
"I know what you mean."
Context wasn't necessary to that one phrase. Both had lost something. This one bit of their lives was gone for good, and there was probably nothing that could be done for it.
When the small awkward conversation with Kanan began, Ezra somewhat expected that he would feel this something he had felt so long ago, when the bond had first been created.
This feeling of security and warmth, and yet neither of the two was present. And that somewhat unnerved him. He was subtly trying to grasp for it, this thread that connected master and apprentice, the same way he tried to grasp for any kind of sound just to be met with this emptiness.
No sound could be heard because his ears were damaged beyond repair and the bond was there but it felt like Kanan was on the other side of the galaxy, despite him sitting right next to him. Truth was that he followed the thread to be met with this wall. Tall and impenetrable.
This lack of communication on both physical and mental aspects just hurt. It was like being abandoned all over again, his master was just so close and yet so far away...
Some relief washed over his troubled thoughts, when Kanan nudged him to say something. There was this moment he wished that he still had his hearing, just to hear his master's voice.
'Maybe some meditation would help you clear your thoughts?'
Ezra read what he said crystal clear. He nodded and got up. The two walked around the base and eventually reached the point where Kanan usually spent his time alone.
The padawan hadn't meditated once since Malachor, since that was something he did with his master. He felt better that he was getting to do something familiar after so long.
Sitting down and closing his eyes, Ezra tried to focus and clear his head of any kind of thought. That wasn't very hard, over time he had gotten the hang of it. It was nice once in a while, to have a moment of quiet. On your own. In silence.
Silence.
Why did all his thoughts end in that word? Why was that all he would end up pondering on?
Maybe because that was the definition of his life from now on. He would never hear his family again. He would never hear Hera's soothing voice, Sabine's laugh, Zeb when being sarcastic, even Chopper grumbling.
That because he was deaf.
Deaf, deaf, death.
That one bit of his life wasn't just gone. It was dead. For good.
This is what Kanan felt like when he lost his sight? Ezra imagined that it probably hurt and such a loss made one never feel complete, but he never imagined that it would be that much. This was too much to take in. It was too overwhelming.
This was supposed to be a moment of peace. But all this moment brought him was sorrow and pain. Just because of that kriffing explosion!
The next thing Ezra knew was that he was bolting through the base. He was sure that everyone familiar to him was shouting for him to stop, but that didn't matter. Their cries fell on deaf ears as the young padawan ran aboard the Ghost and into his room.
And the thing after that, was that a small crowd had barged into the room and gathered all around him. Ezra's vision was blurry from the tears, but he knew exactly who was who. Hera had gotten him into her embrace, Zeb and then Sabine proceeding to do the same.
Ezra had gotten into a complete mental breakdown, sobs wracking through his body and the voices of his fellow crew members effortlessly tried to comfort the teen.
In a short while, he started mumbling incoherent words, but through them a single phrase was distinguishable. "I'm sorry."
A/N: I don't think I overdid it. Did I?
Rebonding between master and apprentice? Well... Task failed successfully :'(
I just figured that someone losing something that they considered so important in their life so suddenly would be overwhelming, especially for such a young person as Ezra.
And a mental breakdown would be just a matter of time. So hence the small fluff moment in the end of the chapter...
So I hope I didn't depress you too much, because I think I just made myself depressed xD
Too soon?
Till the next chapter!
