Lost in space 2019
Maureen/John fanfiction season 2
They had been on the water planet for almost seven months and life was not that bad. John enjoyed the routines and that he for once, in more than three years was surrounded by his family. Maureen was a little more conflicted about their present location. She was concerned for her children. They didn't have a chance to meet other young people. To fall in love. To have a family one day. And Jupiter 2 wouldn't keep holding up. She spent night and day working on a way off the planet. She was close to a solution, she could feel it. She had her "office" on the small beach. Over 10 ideas were hanging on paper from a string to remind her, that to every problem there is a solution. But maybe she had been working too hard. A wave of dizziness flowed through her and she held on to he tabletop, closed her eyes and bowed her head while she breathed slowly. Nausea made all color drain from her face. Oh no, what if she was getting sick. She didn't have time to get sick. Worse was, if she got sick in her spacesuit, that would be indescribably disgusting. Don was approaching and quickly determined something was off with Mrs. Robinson. "Are you okay Mrs. Robinson?" She was embarrassed to have been caught with her guard down and turned her head fast to excuse herself. But the fast movement drained to much blood from her head and she swayed on her feet. Don was fast by her side to support her. "I better call for John" behind closed eyes she sank a big lump of nausea and tried to stop Don "No, it´s nothing. I just missed lunch. I´ll be fine in a minute" Don wasn't sure about her answer. "Are you sure. You look both green and white at the same time. And you´re trembling"
"I´m ok..." She tried to stand on her own. It was okay. "I´ll go back for some lunch… I´ll see you at dinner"
"Sure" she walked a little wobbly and concentrated hard to look like she was fine.
Back on Jupiter she took an extra minute to control her nausea. She sat on a box with head between her hand and then headed straight for the bathroom.
Dr. Smith was laying in the window observing the life around her. She had seen Maureen come back towards the ship. She walked a bit funny she thought. Dr. Smith went over to the other window facing the livingroom with the big round table. After a few minutes she saw Maureen almost run to the toilet. Was she sick? When Maureen came back out, she went straight to her livingquarters. Maybe she was getting sick? Maybe something had changed on the planet that made her sick. Dr. Smith made a mental note to observe the rest of the crew for any changes in health or behavior.
At dinnertime Maureen was feeling fine again. Don kept an eye on Maureen, but she seemed fine now, so she was probably right. And he let the concern slip.
Christmas was getting close. They couldn't believe they had been on this hostile planet for seven whole months.
Maureens sickness was coming and going. She hadn't talked to anyone about it.
John and Will had prepared a secret for the family on Christmas morning. A Christmas tree made out of glowing seaweed, and everybody had made presents for each other. On this rare occasion Dr. Smith had been allowed to participate in the festivities without handcuffs.
Maureen discovered this to be one of the mornings that she didn't feel very well. She was getting a little suspicious. This was getting a bit to familiar.
They enjoyed breakfast together. Well most of them did. Don had prepared scrambled eggs generously donated by Debbie his little orange hen. "Eggs everyone! Let´s celebrate" He offered the plate to Judy who then passed it to Dr. Smith. Smith had kept a close eye on Maureen during the last couple of weeks. She knew Maureen had been feeling quicy. She also had a good idea why, but she needed proof. So, she handed Maureen the plate right up in her face, and the shade of green she quickly turned and her quick departure to the toilet confirmed her suspicion. Smith left her seat without anyone noticing, everyone was too wrapped up in joyous conversation and she followed Maureen to the bathroom. She found her kneeling and with her head above the toilet. Dr. Smith gathered Maureens hair in her hands and whispered close to her ear: "Morning sickness must be hell at your age". Maureen stopped breathing. Who dared put words to her worst fears? She looked sideways. God, she hated that woman. "What?"
Dr. Smith kneeled up against Maureen and stroke her hair. Maureen would have protested but she felt tied to the toilet and wasn't sure her stomach would hold. Dr. Smith stroke Maureens back and let her hand slide down and to the side until it stopped right on top of the small babybump and whispered in her ear "There! Haven't you noticed your little bump? New life. Are you so surprised? You and John can hardly keep your hands from each other. Kissing… touching… Don't think I haven't heard how you enjoy your nights together… but don't worry. Your secret is safe with me". Dr. Smith ran a cloth under the water in the sink and brushed Maureens forehead and the around her mouth and lips while shoving a smirk Maureen didn't trust.
"Why?... why do you care? Or not care?" Maureen gathered all her strength and pushed herself away from Smith and towards the wall. The movement didn't do anything good for an upset stomach and she swallowed hard against the nausea. "You´re my family, of cause I care" Smith tried to sound sweet but Maureen knew her enemy. "Then keep your mouth shot! And get me back in there" Smith smiled and offered Maureen both hands to get up. She gave her a fast tug and pulled her to her feet. The movement was like a car crash and Maureen was actually glad that Smith didn't let go of her just yet. She felt Smiths arms around her waist and opened her eyes to stare directly into Smith happy smile. "See, you need me… I can help conceal your secret. Remember: secrets are my specialty." Smith held Maureen a little too tight as she glared Maureen in the eye. This was to show Maureen her power over her. "Here let me help you" Smith guided Maureen back to the living room. Maureen didn't sit for long before retreating under the excuse she was a little under the weather. Smith smirked. A secret was just the thing she needed to get her way around this ship. For too long she had been under the power of the Robinson family. Time for things to change. Smith had a good idea why Maureen didn't want anyone to know about her pregnancy just yet. They all depended on her. She was the leader of the family, of the ship. Without her they would be stuck here. Something that Smith didn't like at all. At the water planet she had no freedom. No way to control her own life. So, it was very much in Smiths interest to support Maureen and help in any way necessary to get of the planet.
That night their corn crop died because of a leak and John decided to give Maureens plan a shot.
They began their boat adventure. Luckily morning sickness and motion sickness resembled each other and Maureen and Penny took turn throwing up. Penny recovered quickly with the help of the old trick of an earplug in one ear. But that didn't help Maureen and she was getting dehydrated. She was laying on the bathroom floor hoping they soon would reach the lightning storm and get back into space. Smith came down to look for Maureen. They needed her to keep a steady course. "Oh good, I found you" Smith said cheerfully. She hauled an almost unconscious Maureen from the floor. She got her into the living room onto a chair and held her head between her hands "come on old girl. Focus here. We need to know where we´re going. Look at the cards" Maureen came around and with great difficulty she focused on the map.
Maureen plotted the new course and they got to the lightning spot. Maureen and Penny fell into the bottom of the waterfall and now she was standing with her young daughter contemplating whether or not they would ever get out of there, or if the family would have to leave them. But Maureen was a woman who wouldn't let a little adversity dictate her way. They looked around trying to figure out what to do. Maureen felt so tired. If she could just lay down for a few minutes. Her blood sugar was very low and she was dizzy. "Mom! Mom!" Penny was shaking her shoulders. "Mom, are you okay?" Maureen opened her eyes and smiled "I'm fine. Sorry. Just a bit tired. How are you holding up?" Penny didn't like her mother's pale color, and something was telling her that Maureen was sick. She seemed sick. "Mom are you sure you´re alright? You look sick" Maureen held on to Penny's elbows. It was meant to reassure her daughter, but it was just as much for her own sake, so she wouldn't looser her balance. She sank to her knees, if she could just sleep for at few minutes. In the distance she could her Penny calling "Mom. Mom – Dad something´s wrong with mom" Penny's voice was desperate "Penny, what´s going on? What´s wrong with mom?" John was getting nervous. If there was a breach in Maureen's suit it would be a matter of seconds before her life would end. Don overheard the message from Penny, and they talked about using the chariot as a life pod and sending it into the waterfall.
"you stay here John. I´ll get Penny and Maureen back" John would have protested, but it made sense not risking both parents' life.
Don got to the bottom of the waterfall and went straight for Maureen. She was sitting on the ground trying to hold down what little content there was in her stomach. Don kneeled down to her "Maureen are you sick?" Maureen sat with closed eyes "I´m not sure" She turned her look up at the chariot hanging in the waterfall. "You want us in that?" Don smiled "yep… Let´s get going" He helped Maureen up. She was a little shaky on her legs. They got into the chariot just as the lightning caught up with them. Them weren't sure they were alive until John opened the doors. They all got out in happy reunion. "Mom I'd like to take a look at you!" Judy commanded. "Right, just give me a minute. I need a bathroom break" how the hell was she supposed to avoid Judy? Judy didn't leave her mothers side. She helped her out of her suit and to her parents living quarters. Maureen sat down on the bed "Judy… I need to tell you something, but I need you to keep it to yourself, okay" Judy sat down beside Maureen and took her hand. Now she was really concerned. "I´ve bee feeling sick for a while. Actually, I've been feeling sick for some weeks" "Why didn't you come to me?" Judy interrupted. Maureen didn't have the gut to have eye contact. "I, ah….I think I'm preg…" They were interrupted by Don "Hey if we want to get out of here, we need to takeoff now… The lightning´s getting intense. Let´s go folks!" Both Maureen and Judy got up fast. A bit to fast for Maureen. She took a second to close her eyes, swallow and then with a reassuring smile to her 18-year-old daughter they headed for the cockpit. "Mom, you were saying?" "Let´s talk later!" Maureen brushed her off.
Judy had a thousand question for her mother, but one kept lingering in her mind: was her mother about to say pregnant when they were interrupted? Was that why she had been feeling sick? Thinking of it, her figure had changed a bit during the last month. She didn't doubt her parents loved each other very much. And they had been very affectionate the last seven and a half months. The walls were thin on Jupiter 2 and everybody knew what was going on at night at their parents' quarters. It wasn't unusual for women to have a surge in fertility in their late thirties. Maureen was 39. Wow. Pregnant. She would have to make sure her mother took better care of herself. Which was a contradiction knowing her mother.
Maureen woke up from a metallic sound. Will was in danger, she could feel it. She ran in her nightgown through the ship and found a robot hovering over Will in his bed. Only when she got closer screaming Wills name, it wasn't Will, it was a baby. A sleeping baby. And then she woke up with a stir sitting in her suit at the cockpit looking out into space watching the resolute approach from afar…
The others prepared to board, and Maureen was making sure Smith didn't go anywhere by handcuffing her to a chair in the dinning area. "I´ll make sure the authorities are notified about you". "And I'll try not to let your secret slip" Maureen looked her straight in the eye. "Don't try to think you know me. You `don't know me!" fury was burning in Maureen's eyes. "Let me go, and I won't say anything. Tie me down, and I'll tell first one I see!" "I´m sure you´ll figure out a way to get free" and with that Maureen left.
She and John joined the kids and hand in hand they boarded the Resolute. The kids went ahead to find the other kids and John and Maureen wanted to find Victor Dhar. They walked along the corridors wondering where all the people had gone. "John, there´s something I'd like to talk to you about" John was listening. Maureen stopped. She didn't know how to say this. She didn't know how to feel about this. Of cause she expected them to be at alpha centauri before long, but was it a new baby they wanted? Could their relationship handle one more child? And what if they were stuck here in space? A baby on Jupiter 2, how? Still, it was early on in her pregnancy and the stress and physical strain so far had been enormous. There was no way of knowing if she´d loose the baby. But by the physical discomfort indicated the baby was hanging on tight. All these thoughts went through Maureen's mind. John could sense something was wrong "Maureen you´re pale as the moon. Still feeling sick? Did Judy get to take a look at you?". "No, there wasn't time… John about feeling sick, I…" "Dad, I found a little girl in the hallway, could you get down to deck 2?" Judy´s voice interrupted over the radio. "Damn" Maureen thought. "We´re on our way" John answered. "I´ll continue to the bridge" Maureen stated.
They continued in different directions. Maureen entered an empty bridge. She opened the ships log to find out why the Resolute was desolated.
Within hours the Robinsons had won a new fight against, yet another robot and Ben Adler was a new friend with robot experience. He and Will got close and he signed up for a mission to find Wills robot at the desert planet. Maureen had decided not to tell John about the baby and believed Smith to be in care of custody.
So here she was, on her way to a desert planet with her youngest son and a not that bad looking, charming man. It must be hormones running away with her. She actually felt a little hot in her cheeks. She was surprised to discover they were going horseback riding. Actually, it wasn't very safe to ride long distances when pregnant.
But she felt so relaxed in the saddle, the sun in her face, she could almost forget they were on a foreign planet. But small twinges in her abdomen reminded her, she had a secret passenger on board. She rubbed her abdomen where the small pains were coming from. She needed a break. She tried to breath in through her nose and out through mouth. She was a little nauseous. "You okay Maureen? You look a little pale" Adler had noticed her hand on her abdomen. "It´s nothing" Maureen answered, but Adler wasn't convinced. "Let´s make camp here. The sun will go down soon" Will wasn't pleased with the news but got down from his horse and started feeding it some apples.
Adler approached Maureen "aren't you getting down?" "Yeah, I just…" She didn't know what to say. Obviously, she was in some sort of pain. "Want a hand?" He offered. She was afraid to get down. The pain had increased, what if she was losing the baby, which she wasn't neither happy nor sad about. "Yeah, just some stomach cramps". "I thought you said you were used to this…riding" Adler reached up for Maureen and he could see she was in pain "just slide down to me. I´ll catch you" She did as told, and once in his arms, she crumbled in pain with a long moan. "What´s wrong with mom?" Will ran to her side. She was on her knees. "Just a stomach cramp. Guess its been a while" She focused on her breathing. "Will, go get your mother some water!". Will did as told, and Adler got a moment alone with Maureen "You sure it´s just stomach cramps?" She looked at him but found no words. "Let´s get you to lay down". He helped her up and to a nice sitting spot. Will brought her water and Adler got a fire going. Soon they were small talking around the fire.
Maureens cramps had subsided. She woke up feeling someone watching her. She found Adler starring at her. "feeling better?". "Yeah". "Want something to eat? You missed dinner. I thought it better to let you sleep. How´s the pain?". "better". Adler presented some food, but the smell was not agreeing with Maureen's stomach and a small retching sound escaped her. Adler quickly withdrew the food. "You sure you´re okay?". "Yeah, I'm just not that hungry" she lied, and they tried to sleep the rest of the night. Next day was a long ride. They found Wills robot, or so they thought. Actually, it was one of the bad ones, but with Adler's skills and with a little help from his special magnets, they neutralized the robot and found Wills friendly robot.
Will was teaching the robot to feed the horse with some apples when Adler found Maureen retching behind some rocks.
"Hey, Maureen, sit down… tell me… what´s going on with you?" She sat down further away from the rocks. She was breathing heavily, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. Adler offered her some water. "I, eh…I´ve been a little under the weather. It´s nothing" She avoided eye contact.
"Something which nine months takes care of?" startled she looked at him. "How?...".
"Come on Maureen, I got a family. I know the signs… Am I right?". She looked down at her hands. "Yeah… but, please. Nobody knows" Adler smiled. "You shouldn't be riding this much! Are you sure this trip is good idea?". "Probably not. But this whole situation isn't a good idea" she smiled. "What is John saying to all this?". She looked away "He doesn't know.. I didn't feel sure…" A tear escaped her. "My mouth is shot… Our landing site isn't far. Take it easy, okay. Here, have an apple" she accepted the apple. It felt good to get some food into her stomach.
They reached the landing site and it became clear to Adler that Wills robot wasn't like the others. Adler pulled Maureen away from Wills earshot "I really think you should tell John about the baby. You shouldn't stand alone with this kind of worry". Maureen smiled "I will…" But Adler sensed she was withholding something. Will wasn't standing far enough away, and he heard some of the conversation. He was certain he heard the word baby. Was his mother pregnant? Was that why she´d been sick? But he also knew this wasn't for him to know. So, he would have to pretend he didn't know.
They got on board the Resolute safely. The trip in the Jupiter transport ship was turbulent and not doing anything good for Maureen's shaky stomach. Adler looked concerned at her. He had come to like and appreciate her and Will very much. He was worried she would miscarry from her hard work. But this wasn't his wife and not his place to interfere. He would just have to help from a distance.
Maureen was once again going to save the day. This time from a maintainspod. And she did save the day. At least Don and Ava´s life. But Hastings had other plans for Maureen and her husband. John went out to help Maureen when her pod ran out of juice. So here they were. Left behind by the Resolute, who didn't know they were out there, cut away from their kids. They had no way of getting to any nearby planet. Just left here to die. Together. Each in their own pod. Maureen fiddled with her wedding ring. She felt so helpless and frustrated. "John? There´s something I need to tell you". "there´s no need to explain. You made a judgement call. You did it to keep the family together". "No, I'm not talking about Will… I don't know why I didn't tell you sooner… I guess I was afraid… John, I'm pregnant…"There was a long pause "Run that by me again". "I know this comes as a shock. But…". "How long have you known?". "A few weeks". "Why didn't you tell me?". "I.." they didn't get to talk more. They were surprised by some alien octopus which at first was extremely beautiful, but they got caught in its slipstream and were thrown off course heading towards the extreme burning middle of where the hell they were. Johns pod lost its grip on Maureen's pod and she went spinning away from him. She screamed having no control of her pod and no way of getting it. "JOHNNNN!". "I´m coming!". He worked fast and got a hold of her pod. They were both thrown around inside their pod and the seatbelts was almost crushing their ribcage from the increasing G-force. Maureen was concerned about the baby. She felt an increasing pain in her abdomen and stomach. She couldn't hold up much longer, and neither could the baby. With fierce determination John got them away from the heat "Maureen, are you okay?". It took a few seconds for her to answer. She had to focus on her breathing and finding her voice again. Her world kept spinning together with a throbbing pain in her abdomen "Yeah, I'm okay. You?". "I´m okay… The baby?...Maureen, is the baby okay?". She didn't know what to answer. She hugged her stomach. "Maureen! Answer me. Are you alright?". She cried "I´m not sure John". "Are you in pain?". She almost couldn't get the words out for tears "A bit". Knowing Maureen as John did, a little pain meant a lot pain. John saw Jupiter 2 leave the hangar at Resolute "John, it that our Jupiter… can you reach them?" He was so relieved to hear her voice "No… there´s not enough time. They´re heading away from us. I´ll try to get into the hangar, but it´ll be close". They made it, just barely. They came in hard and their pods crashed in the hangar and they both lost consciousness. John came around first and got out, only thinking about Maureen… a baby…she was pregnant… he was going to be a dad again… He got into Maureen's pod and found her still unconscious. He unstrapped her from her seatbelt, and she fell forward into his arms. "Maureen…Maureen, honey" He caressed her cheek and kissed her forehead. "Maureen?" She opened her eyes slowly. "John?". He smiled "a baby?". She smiled back at him with a single tear running down her cheek "Yeah… surprise". Their foreheads met and they laughed. "The kids are gonna get so surprised, and excited!" John laughed. "come on. We must get out of here before anyone finds us. Can you move?" She nodded and John helped her out of the crashed pod. They moved slowly and with each movement Maureen couldn't help to let out a small moan to Johns great concern. "How far along are you?" He lifted her onto the floor. "About four months". "That far?!" He looked at her stomach and breast and knowing what he was looking for, it was obvious she had changed figure a bit. How it had escaped his attention was beyond him. He saw her naked not more than a week ago. But come to think of it, he had noticed her breast seemed richer last week. But being a man, a man who adored his wife, especially his naked wife, he didn't think more about it, he just enjoyed it. They were met by Don who knew of a secret hiding place. "Come on folks, let's get going". They started heading out but stopped when Maureen moaned in pain and gripped her stomach. Don stood by "are you hurt?". John scooped Maureen into his arms "No, she´s pregnant". The shock on Dons face was evident. "pregnant? Did you just say pregnant?". "Come on. Get going" John commanded while running fast to the nearest conduit.
They got to safety in a closed off cargo room and Maureen was placed on the floor for some rest. Don didn't like the way she looked. So pale and heavy breathing. He went over to John and whispered, "She doesn't look good!". "I know. We need Judy". "I´ll go get her!". Don left the compartment in which they were hiding. He found Judy and explained where her parents were. "Your mother needs you". "Why? What happened?". "I think it´s better you talk to her yourself". Then Judy remembered her conversation with her mother when they were about to leave the water planet. Pregnant. Was her mother about to tell her she was pregnant? Was that why she needed her now? Judy took a few things from medical to stop induced labor or whatever to expect. She arrived with Dons help and found her mother insanely pale, covered in cold sweat, panting and in fetus position. "Mom. Mom can you hear me? Where does it hurt?". "Judy checked Maureen's wristband to check her pulse and heartrate. Both much too high. "Mom, you gotta tell me". Maureen looked at Judy "My abdomen" Maureen's look told Judy everything. A mixture of fear and sorrow, like she´d already given up on the situation. Judy opened her mother jacket and pants. It was obvious she had changed figure. A fine little bump was visible. Judy felt around the bump, but Maureen couldn't withhold her aching and gasped in pain. "I´m sorry mom. Have you been bleeding?". "I don't know" she whispered. "I need to take a look". Maureen felt completely out of her comfort zone. "Mom listen, I'm not your daughter right now. I´m your doctor!" She looked firmly into her mother's eyes. Her mother nodded and Judy began to pull Maureen's pants just down to her knees. Thank god for white standard issue underwear. "Mom there´s a little red spotting. I´m going to give you something to stop contractions. I hope it´ll be enough". Judy pressed the needle into her mothers' arm. I need you to rest, relax and breath all the way down to your stomach. Here let me help you get dressed again. How far along do you think you are?". "About four months. Give or take". Judy nodded. "You´ve passed the critical first trimester". Maureen smiled and reached out for Judy's hand "I know". "Sorry. I forgot you´ve been through this a few times" Judy smiled. "Why didn't you tell me, that you´re pregnant?". "Don't take it personally Jude. I wasn't ready to tell anybody. And I wasn't sure it would stay. I´m not that young anymore… and I wasn't sure how you would take it". Judy squished her mother's hand. " I think it´s lovely mom… bad timing, but lovely" Judy smiled. "I´m gonna give you something to relax". Maureen closed her eyes and drifted into a dreamless sleep. She was exhausted.
