Surprise Interrogation

Ren Amamiya sat alone in a police holding room. He had been taken into custody by the Tokyo Police Department at the scene of the Phantom Thieves of Heart's latest heist. But that was hours ago, and he had already succeeded in his little trick to catch the true culprit behind the death of Mr. Okumura. All had been going according to plan, at least it had been. Ren had been in this room for nearly eight hours already with an interrogator. That person was none other than Sae Nijima, a public prosecutor with a fantastic record. Our hero had managed to convince her to go along with their latest trick and was now awaiting her to come free him from his chains to the desk in front of him.

"That's weird, she's awfully late" Ren thought to himself. "If she takes too much longer another officer might take me to a holding cell before I get the chance to make my escape."

The teenager with the codename Joker shuddered to think what may happen if things spiraled out of his control, the plan he and his accomplices came up with was good but not without holes in a few areas. One of said holes was the escape route. While the thief who stole hearts was certain he had gained Prosecutor Sae's trust, he wasn't sure she would immediately commit to helping him with his latest plan. Joker began running more scenarios in his head of possible escape routes and managed to come up with two plans before about ten more minutes passed. Then, Sae Nijima entered the room again.

"Seeing as how you're still alive I assume your little trick worked on him?" she asked the young Ren.

"He did exactly as we predicted, I take it you're ready to move then? I'm dying to get out of these handcuffs" the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Heart responded.

The tall woman sat down with another file Ren didn't recognize from their earlier meetings, things were about to get weirder.

"I've already cleared your charges" she said to Joker, "The police are holding off on any press releases as per my instructions and our transportation is being arranged as we speak. I think you'll find I'm being very thorough."

Young Ren sighed in relief, "Well I'm glad that's all over with, any ETA on the way out of here?"

"About another hour, I had to make arrangements to fool our detective friend after all. That'll be your first opportunity." Sae calmly told him.

Ren still had a hard time talking to the relatively young Prosecutor. Just hours ago she had run him through a lengthy debriefing on the activities of the Phantom Thieves. He had managed to avoid confirming Ms. Nijima's suspicions as to the identity of his various accomplices, his friends. And while he had no doubt that she was now on their side, Ren was still nervous around her.

"But still I have to say I'm particularly curious." Sae said suddenly amidst the silence.

"What about?" Ren asked her. "I've essentially given you a detailed recount of my whole life since moving to Shibuya."

Sae's eyes reopend. Her gaze was cold and accusing, reminding the young man of the beginning of his time in the room.

"What exactly is your relationship with my little sister Makoto?"

…"Excuse me?" Ren responded, now incredibly perplexed.

Sae was completely serious. After this whole time he could tell when she wasn't going to let something go amiss. And if Makoto was as accurate about her sister's character as he assumed, this would not go well.

"What about your sister?" the thief known as Joker asked her.

"Don't be coy. You at least must be familiar with her seeing as she's the Student Council President at your school." Sae was confident in her assumption.

Knowing it would do no good denying this basic knowledge, Ren simply nodded in agreement. He didn't like where this was going Sae promptly moved on.

"You may feign ignorance as to the identities of you many accomplices, and of course given her recent behavior I suspect her of being one herself. But that's not why I'm back in here again." Sae opened the folder she brought in with her.

The contents included a myriad of photos of Ren and Makoto together, several scraps of paper with what looked like a detailed schedule, and what looked like childish doodles of the two of them together holding hands and smooching. If not for the cold sweat now washing over Joker he would have found the drawing adorable. There was fire in the prosecutor's eyes.

"So, care to tell me when in that little timeline of yours you started dating my little sister?" Ms. Nijima crossed her arms, sat back and watched as the Phantom Thief panicked for the first time all.

"Oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no!" Ren was screaming internally. "How did she find out?! Makoto never said she mentioned me to….was she following us? No, a private investigator maybe? This is bad. REALY BAD."

Sae watched the boy sweat in silence. His reactions were now far more typical of a thief caught red handed. Parts of her initial suspicions of the students at Shujin Academy were things that Sae had confided in her little sister Makoto. But she also noticed some time ago before the last summer vacation how strange Makoto had been acting. Long before Sae had ever suspected her own sister of being a part of the group she had pledged to prosecute, she had noticed little changes in her sister's usual mannerisms. Sae knew very well what it was like to have a schoolgirl crush, and recognized it fairly quickly. Who could have possibly caught the attention of HER little sister? She had to know.

Instead of the usual investigators she was used to having access to, Sae hired a journalist by the name of Ichiko Ohya to discreetly investigate her sister. Weeks later, said woman came back to her desk saying she personally knew the boy in question. Ren Amamiya kept a low profile for a high school student, but his eccentricities stood out easily enough to tail him relatively easily. Not many students walk around with a cat hiding inside a bag all day long. The boy was younger than Makoto, and unlike the model student she was this Ren boy was somewhat of an enigma. He had a police record, an assault incident that prompted relocation for disciplinary purposes.

The more information Ohya brought back the more concerned Sae became for her sister. But she held back. From the photos that she had seen Sae saw her sister happier than ever with a new group of friends, and particularly when she was alone with the dark haired boy in glasses. Sae was a domineering guardian, but she saw little to no further issues with the boy's behavior at first so she eventually let the matter go and paid the journalist for her time. Ultimately her sister's happiness was more important to Sae than her own standards for men.

Things changed once Sae had connected the dots and realized Makoto's new friends and the Phantom Thieves were one and the same. And although Ren had succeeded in convincing her of the righteousness of their cause, her sister was another point entirely. Clearly Saw felt the need to get the record straight and hear what he had to say on this front.

"Well? I'm waiting." Sae finally spoke again, startling the poor boy.

"Um, that is…well it started when she asked me for help with a classmate named Eiko" said Ren.

Ren proceeded to recount the events leading up to their eventual coupling. He told her what he liked about Makoto, her sense of responsibility, how earnest she was, her curious nature as well. While Ren kept talking, Sae was internally sighing with relief. He was being honest like he had been during the interrogation. It was kind of cute how earnest his responses were, but still a tad embarrassing to hear aloud. Ren as talking about Sae's little sister after all. She let him continue for a while before dropping the façade.

"Okay okay, you can relax. Yikes, if I knew you'd get this nervous I should have started this whole interrogation with this hahahaha!" Sae laughed.

Ren sat back somewhat dazed. This was the first time he had seen Sae smile, let alone laugh. Looking closely he noticed the obvious resemblance the sisters shared.

"That smile too." He said. The older Nijima sister stopped to look at Ren. "You both have that wonderful smile."

Ren had turned on the suave at a strange time and caused Sae to blush. The young hero was sometimes a little too good with his charm.

"Ahem!, well never mind that. Let's get you back home to get the rest of your plan rolling okay?" Sae said, attempting to reset the mood in the room.

"Huh? I thought you said we'd be ready in an hour?" the boy asked the prosecutor.

Sae smiled once more, "Just a little lie I told to keep you here a little longer. C'mon you want to go home right? Or would you rather I take you back to my home and interrogate you and Makoto together?"

"No thank you! Home please! My guardian at LeBlanc must be worried sick." Ren said rather quickly.

Prosecutor Nijima released the Phantom Thief from his shackles. She may have already become his accomplice, but unlocking him from that table felt to Sae like the biggest favor she could do for the Ren. That, and perhaps be supportive to the young man and her sister. The two drove out of the police compound, the thief known as Joker in a disguise the Sae had prepared for him.

"Just one last question Mr. Amamiya" the elder Nijima said. Ren was relieved to hear the qualifier of last question.

"Oh yeah? What's that?"

"Do all your accomplices get silly code names?" she asked grinning one more time.
