After breakfast, Sam and Dean decided to scope out the town, to look for anything suspicious or interesting at all. Before they left the diner the brothers asked the waitress if there were any tourist traps or town specialties around. The blond haired girl eyed them briefly but pointed them in the direction of the infamous "Mystery Shack". She recited a brief summary about the trap, usually used to lure gullible tourists looking for some kind of "mysterious adventure."
Sam chuckled, knowing it was really just a fun way to scam people out of their money, but Dean was actually intrigued. He asked a couple more questions about it, like how the Shack started and how long it had been standing. The waitress simply explained some local lore about it, but told them it was started by a man named Stanford Pines almost 30 years ago.
After that, Sam and Dean thanked the girl for their meals, paid and left a generous tip, mostly from Dean. As they got up to leave, Dean turned back to the girl and asked for her name, to which she smiled as sweetly as possible and replied "Pacifica." Before Dean could answer back with some poorly worded pick up line, the owner of the diner herself appeared behind the young waitress saying, "She's a whole 15 years old, my darling girl!"
A red faced Sam grabbed Dean by the back of his collar and dragged him out, spilling out numerous apologies as Lazy Susan held her chin high and Pacifica smirked, waving them out.
Dean remained fairly quiet as they drove around the town. As they figured, there wasn't much more in Gravity Falls than what a normal small town would have. There was a town hall, library, church, police station, local diner, grocery store and barber; nothing out of the ordinary. They had gone around the town once before circling the outskirts of the town, where the so-called, "Mystery Shack" was.
On the way, they passed a couple of kids and a pig, who were walking down the middle of the road. Dean grumbled as he drove around them because they didn't move much, as they hadn't seemed bothered at all by oncoming traffic. They noticed this was where a lot of the town locals lived, along with the town's mechanic shop and inn. It was only another couple of minutes before they reached the Shack.
Once they got to the clearing, Dean parked in an area with the most dead grass, which must have been where most people parked. Sam pulled out an old pamphlet from his jacket which read "The Mystery Shack: World Famous" in big letters, surrounded by the word "What?" and way too many question marks. He flipped through it as Dean craned his neck to try and read it. Sam noticed this and rolled his eyes, handing the pamphlet over to his brother.
"Yikes, this looks like a kid made it." Dean snickered as he flipped through the crudely done advertisement.
"Yeah, but it also seems like it is pretty popular. I heard some other tourists talking about its "wonders" and "displays" like they were the best thing they'd ever seen." Sam replied.
Dean looked up at the Shack. It was an old building that looked like it had seen much better days. It was rather quiet, and they hadn't seen anyone going in or out, or around it. Sam suggested that the Shack was closed since it was Sunday, so Dean took that as their cue to go. Even though it seemed like another normal cheesy tourist trap, something about it gave Sam an uneasy feeling. He waved it off as paranoia from his previous experience at a tourist trap. But he still hoped this wouldn't mean his brother would get hurt.
The brothers headed back into town and drove around some more. Sam had spotted a little ice cream parlor and suggested they go talk over a cold treat, especially since it was "300 degrees" outside, according to Dean. Dean parked the impala on the side of the shop and the two headed in. Upon entering the shop, they were hit with a refreshing burst of cool air, which Dean stood in for longer than what was appropriate, letting out a content sigh.
Sam looked back at his brother briefly before heading up to the counter to make sure he was following. Just as the brothers stepped forward, however, Sam stopped suddenly. This caused Dean to run into the back of Sam. Just as he opened his mouth to tell off his brother, Sam blurted out a quick but sincere apology. Dean looked over his brother's shoulder to see two kids and a pig standing in front of them.
"No worries sir! Accidents happen, and I wasn't paying attention either. Have a good day!" The brown haired girl with a brightly colored sweatshirt reassured Sam before moving past him and Dean, her pet pig and acquaintance following behind.
Dean watched the kids and the pig go by, wondering to himself if things like that were normal around here. They must've had different indoor animal exceptions here. Dean hadn't realized he was staring until he made eye contact with the boy who trailed behind the pig. He gave an awkward smile and turned back to his brother, who was at the counter already.
The brothers ordered their ice cream and paid, thanking the blonde teen behind the counter before walking away. Dean went back to thinking about the two kids and the pig, and turned to Sam.
"Hey, those two were walking down the street when we drove to the Shack. I remember cause they have the pig." Dean took another bite of his ice cream. "Are pigs allowed in places here?"
The boys had just sat down at a table in the corner of the shop and already Dean had eaten almost half of his cup. He would've been almost done if he hadn't stopped and held his head from the massive brain freeze he got. Sam laughed and spooned another bite into his mouth. Dean demanded that Sam shut his trap before he punched him, which only made him laugh more.
"Maybe the pig is an exception? I don't know. Service animal? Emotional support pet? Maybe they do have different rules." Sam shrugged and took another bite.
"Actually, I guess it's really just an exception to them. Mabel never goes anywhere without her pet pig, Waddles."
The brothers turned to whoever had answered their question. They saw the teenager who was standing behind the counter by their table. The kid was holding a package that was outside the door when they came in.
"Who's Mabel?" Dean asked, cocking an eyebrow.
"Oh yeah, right. Sorry, I forget that not everyone knows them. You're probably touring the town, right?" The teen pointed out the window to the two kids and the pig sitting on a nearby bench. "The girl there is Mabel and that's her twin brother Dipper. They come up every year for the summers and stay with their Great Uncle, Stan Pines. That guy runs the Mystery Shack down the road."
Sam and Dean glanced at each other before turning back to the teen. "Huh. That's pretty cool. Are a lot of people family around here?" Sam asked.
"There's a lot of families here who have lived here for generations since the town's founding, but then there's also people who just kind of, showed up one day."
"Showed up?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, actually like Stan Pines. But that was, like, 30 years ago or something. Could be more, that guy is pretty old now haha." The blond teen explained.
"So he came up here to start the trap? Seems like pretty common business around this part." Sam replied.
"Yeah, I guess so. My parents say that he showed up years before he started his business though. They said he bought a plot of land near the outer part of the town and built a house, which is now known as the Mystery Shack. But for years, they said they would see him going into the woods all the time. He barely ever came to the town, unless it was for food. Then he'd disappear in his own world all over again. Eventually, he stopped showing up in the town. Never left his house. Then maybe a year or so later, they saw him again, but he was different. Probably lost his marbles, haha. But shortly after that, he invited the town to come see the "World of Mystery" that he built in his own house."
Sam and Dean must have had very confused looks on their faces, because the teen laughed and continued.
"Sure, it sounds bogus, but after word spread that there was a new trap in town, people showed up left and right. The town was in a big drought at the time, so his trap saved the Falls. So if you ask me, I think it's a pretty cool story. I guess that's why you're here, to check it out!"
"Uh, yeah! We thought we'd do something fun this summer, and thought why not something new?" Dean assured.
With that said, the employee walked back to his station to put away the package. Sam and Dean looked at each other. They were definitely thinking the same thing. There is something up with this town, and it's a lot bigger than they think.
