Regulus asked him, once, how'd he'd fallen in love with Remus.

"Did you love him right away, Sirius?"

Sirius remembers pausing, thinking back to the fateful day he met Remus Lupin. The scarred face had attracted a second look, but there had been no fluttering in Sirius' chest, no stammering in his speech. No, those things had come later.

"No," he'd admitted after a long moment of thought. "He crept up on me."

Now, as Sirius watches Remus walk down the aisle—escorted by Hope, because she insisted they cling to tradition where they can—he's glad that Remus slipped past his defenses.

Remus looks into Sirius' eyes. There is a light blush blush dusting the shorter man's features, and Sirius' heartbeat quickens at the sight. He and Remus have been waiting for this day for what feels like centuries, and now that it's here… Sirius wants to hold onto it forever.

Remus is saying his vows. He wrote them himself with great care, and this is the first time Sirius has heard them.

The vows are eloquent and appropriately express the love Remus proclaims every day to Sirius. Sirius' vows, in contrast, are a little clumsy and don't quite express the depth of feeling Sirius has for his partner; Remus knows this and doesn't mind.

Remus' amber eyes are sparkling with excitement as he quietly says I do.

Sirius laughs as he runs past James, shooting his friend a gloating grin. James may be the better footballer of the two, but Sirius is faster. Sprinting downhill might be a dangerous idea, but the two boys have broken bones before and are prepared to take the risk—and Sirius lives for these moments of complete freedom, of feeling undeniably alive.

He's so distracted by this feeling, in fact, that he doesn't notice the boy reading by a nearby tree. Later, Sirius and James will accidentally knock the book from his hands, and Sirius will toss it back to him carelessly.

He doesn't think of the boy again after that.

Remus' smile is soft as he dances with Sirius. His steps are less sure, but Sirius thinks that only makes him more endearing. Remus doesn't seem to mind that Sirius is much more confident in this field, though, because he isn't even glancing at the other couples nearby.

"We're married," Remus murmurs. "For real. It's official."

Sirius laughs. "We are," he agrees, his grey eyes sparkling with excitement. Giddiness bubbles up within him. "You're my husband."

Remus raises a brow. "You're mine." He looks around the room and stifles a laugh. "We should never have let Prongs pick the revenue for the reception. He's rented a bloody ballroom."

"That he has." Sirius rolls his eyes, but in truth, he appreciates that his best mate put so much effort into making their night a special one. "Excellent catering, though."

"Mmm." Remus' eyes flicker over Sirius' shoulder. "Remind me when we can cut the cake?"

Though they weren't aware of their first meeting, it's another year before Remus and Sirius see each other again.

"Hey, James." Sirius' eyes are on the new barista working at the coffee shop he and James frequent—mostly because the object of James' affections, Lily Evans, works there. "Do you know who the new bloke is?"

James barely spares a glance at the man at the counter. "Er, begins with an r. He's a friend of Lily's, I think she said?"

Sirius raises a brow at his friend. There's a good chance this boy isn't straight if James isn't jealous of his closeness with Lily. "Think he'd respond well to me?"

James' hazel eyes are wary. "Mate… we want him to like us, so Lily continues to like us."

Sirius is affronted. "I'm not going to scare him off!"

James just sighs in a resigned way. "Just… don't come on too strong, okay?"

Sirius stood and popped the collar of his leather jacket. He dragged a hand through his hair until he was sure he looked ruggedly handsome, and then grinned down at a very skeptical James. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm delightful."

James drops his head in his hands and groans, but Sirius ignores him in favor of heading up to the counter. He's already ordered a coffee, but what's one more?

The boy looks up as Sirius approaches. There isn't anything truly remarkable about his face besides a few jagged scars, but there is something about the boy that makes Sirius want to get to know him.

"Hey." He waggles his brows and grins at the boy, then delights as a blush spreads across the barista's cheeks. "I just had to stop by and ask—did it hurt when you fell—"

"Stop." The barista holds up a hand, smothering his laughter. "I'll get you a coffee, but please don't finish that sentence."

SIrius pouts. "That's some of my best material!"

"It's tired," argues the barista—Remus, his name tag says. "Come back with something more original."

Sirius sighs and orders, and that should have been the end of it. But he comes back the next morning, unable to resist a challenge… or so he tells himself.

But Remus resists. He is sharp and witty, though the blush on his face gives away his emotions. It isn't until Sirius' infatuation turns into legitimate feelings that Remus' rejections start to sting.

Remus snorts as Sirius spins them around. He looks stunning in his suit; Sirius is obsessed with the sight. He dips his husband towards the ground in one quick, fluid motion, and Remus yelps.

"You and your cake," Sirius mutters affectionately. "We can cut it now, if you'd like."

Twisting out of Sirius' grip, Remus nods. "Yes, I think we've waited long enough."

He hurries off to do just that, and Sirius watches him go with a smile on his face. Sirius glances down at the ring on his hand and takes a moment to marvel at all it represents. After years of being together—of dating, fighting, and making up—he is finally married to the man he loves.

A hand on his shoulder rips him from his thoughts. Regulus stands just behind him, looking a little uncomfortable but happy for his brother all the same.

"I just wanted to offer my congratulations," Regulus tells him quietly. "I'll admit, I never saw you settling down, Sirius."

"Neither did I," Sirius agreed easily. "But then Remus came along."

"Then Remus came along." A smile flickers across Regulus' face. In truth, it's surprising that he's even shown up to the wedding; he and Sirius rarely speak. Sirius is glad he did, though.

"You really love him, don't you?"

Regulus' question is sudden, and it startles Sirius. He raises his brows and regards his brother with confusion. "What, did the wedding not tip you off sooner?"

Regulus coughs embarrassedly. "I meant… I suppose I meant permanently. You've had many lovers, Sirius, but I'd never thought you were serious about any of them until Remus."

Sirius dips his head in agreement. "Yeah," he murmurs. "He's the only one for me, Reg." He grins. "He's ruined me for anyone else."

Sirius goes back to the coffee shop nearly every day for weeks. He's learned Remus' schedule by now, and he likes to think that the tawny-haired boy looks forwards to the visits just as much as Sirius does.

Today, though, Sirius does something different: he doesn't try a pickup line on Remus. He jumps straight into small talk. Remus looks a bit surprised, but otherwise doesn't say anything.

An hour passes. Sirius buys three coffees and hogs Remus' entire lunch break. They have fun, and sometimes Remus shifts just so, and their knees brush. Sirius lives for those moments.

He's getting up to leave when Remus grabs his arm. Sirius pauses, surprised, and turns questioningly.

Remus looks nervous. He's biting his lower lip worriedly, and his amber eyes can't quite maintain eye contact with Sirius'. "I just—Sirius, I was wondering if you'd like to… to hang out sometime."

Sirius' eyes widen, and Remus hastens to explain. "Not here. Outside of my work. And it can be as friends if you'd like, but I'd like it if it was… you know. A date."

There isn't any breath in Sirius' lungs. "A date?"

Remus is pale, but slightly more confident. "A date," he confirms. "With me."

Sirius licks his lips and nods eagerly. "How about the cinema?"

Remus is glowing. "That sounds lovely."

Sirius' hand covers Remus' as they cut the cake. They feed each other a bite of cake, and then cut each other a slice; Sirius makes sure that Remus' is large enough to satisfy his sweet tooth.

At some point in the evening, every guest makes their way over to the couple to congratulate them. Remus, somehow, manages to eat his entire slice of cake between conversations. Sirius is impressed by his dedication to his love of chocolate and tells him as much, to which Remus simply replies, "Shut up."

There's time for another dance before they go. Sirius pulls Remus close, and they begin to sway to the music. The entire room is filled with happy people, as though no sadness can touch them in this moment.

Finally, people begin to trickle out. Sirius has had a great time, but he's anxious to get his husband home.

"Tonight," he murmurs in Remus' ear, "we'll be alone together for the first time as spouses."

Remus squeezes Sirius' shoulders. "I can't wait."

Sirius reaches out and pushes Remus' tawny curls away from his face. "Remus," he breathes out, "I love you so much."

Remus pecks him on the lips. "I love you, too," he says in a low voice.

There is nothing in the world that can shatter this moment, Sirius thinks.

They've been dating for years now. Sirius thinks it's time—hopes it's time—to take the next step.

Remus looks up from his menu. "You're deep in thought," he observes, amused. "Something on your mind?"

Sirius clears his throat. "Erm, no. Find anything to eat, yet?"

Remus shrugs. "A couple things look appealing. Now, are you going to tell me why you dragged me out here tonight?"

Sirius almost says no. He has a whole plan—he wants to wait for dessert, butter Remus up with chocolate, then pop the question. But suddenly… he doesn't want to wait. It's only Remus; he doesn't really care for grand displays, anyway.

So he plucks the box with the ring out of his pocket and places it on the table. He says, "I love you. I've never felt this strongly about anyone before, Remus, and I… I love you."

Remus' hands shake slightly as he reaches out for the box. He cradles it for a moment, then opens it to reveal the simple silver band that Sirius picked out for him. An unnameable emotion crosses his face.

Sirius clears his throat. "Will you marry me, Remus?"

A strangled laugh escapes Remus' chest. "Of course I bloody will."
