Sloppy Joes, Passing Notes, and Fighting

Charlie Brown was looking at Sally with a look of horror, no brother wanted to see his sister making out with anyone. Ecspeally while he was eating lunch, and surrounded by teenagers he had known since kindergarten. Charlie couldn't seem to look away though. Sally and Schroeder were waiting in the lunch line. Sally had her hands around Schroeder's neck and he was pretty sure they couldn't get any closer. It even looked like Schroeder's tongue was down her throat. But, of course everything looked worse when your sloppy Joe was about to make a reappearance.

"If it wouldn't sound so petty I would yell 'get a room'." Linus sat down across from Charlie, thankfully blocking his horrifying view.

"You would also sound like you were twelve years old. I hear that girls don't find that attractive."

It had been a week since they had disagreed on whether or not Charlie should tell Lucy how he felt. This was the first time they had really talked. It wasn't that they were still mad, it was just that neither of them wanted to say that they were wrong. They are both pretty stubborn. Most likely they wouldn't even mention it and just go back to being friends.

"Is that all girls or just the ones our age. I could go younger if I needed to."

"No, going younger would not help you. To go younger for you would be Seventh grade. The Older the guy the cooler the girl looks. I am almost positive there are laws about a seventh grader and a junior."

Charlie had missed their playful banter.

"Wow Charlie, I didn't know you knew so much about this topic. Here I was thinking you only knew about baseball."

With this comment Charlie smiled, he did know a lot about it even though he wasn't that great at the sport. That was one of the reasons he was going to major in Sports Broadcasting in college.

"Well", Linus added, "and Lucy".

The smile disappeared from his face. He quickly scanned the room for her, she was a few tables down from him. She was wearing a purple top that contrasted with her hair and took his breath away. Not that that took much. She was sitting in between Frieda and Violet, and Lucy kept glancing over at Sally and Schroeder.

Bringing his attention back to Linus, Charlie sighed. So much for not bringing it up.

"Linus..." Charlie started, "I can't tell her right now. Not while she still loves him, not right after he broke her heart. I would be selfish to do that and I care too much for her to ruin anything I have with her. None of this can be about me."

Now it was Linus' turn to sigh. He looked down at the table and then back at Charlie.

"I know but there has to be something we can do. She deserve better than him. Maybe..."

Linus stopped talking and started smiling.

"I have an idea. Meet me after your History class at the track. I have to get my thoughts together."

Leaving a very confused Charlie Brown at the table, Linus walked out of the cafeteria.

Mr.Bates was the most boring teacher in the world. He liked history but Norm Bates didn't make any of the topics intresting.

The one good thing about having Mr. Bates as a teacher was you could pass notes easily. He never looked away from the board. So, when a note landed on Charlie's desk he didn't even look up before opening the note. He knew at once it was from Lucy.

Meet me after class in the Library.

Quickly he wrote down a response and passed it back.

I can't, I'm meeting Linus on the running track.

You don't run, Char, meet me.

I already agreed to meet Linus. We are working on a project.

Work on it after you meet with me.

Why can't I meet with you after?

Because I am selfish and want you first.

Looking at her last reply it was hard to swallow. If she only knew what the words 'I want you' were doing to him. Ugh, this was going to be hard but he had to stand his ground. He needed to know what Linus' idea was.

I promise, Luce I will meet up with you after I am done with Linus.

I thought we were best friends, Char.

He didn't even dignify that with a response. Folding the paper and putting it in his pocket he tried to give Mr. Bates his full attention. Lucy gave him pointed looks until near the end of class when she asked to go to the bathroom.

When Class ended Charlie Brown started down the hall. As he was getting closer to the door that would lead to the track he was grabbed and pulled onto another corridor.

"Stop trying to get away from me, Char."

So she hadn't really gone to the bathroom like she said. She had been waiting on him.

Charlie Brown laughed at the thought of trying to get away from Lucy, it was actually the opposite. He was trying to do everything to get near her.

She was hugging him now and he was enjoying it a little too much. Her black hair smelled like lavender and her purple shirt felt soft. When she pulled away he tried not to frown.

"So are you done ignoring me?" Lucy asked with a smile.

"Ignoring you? Impossible Luce." Charlie replied with a laugh.

"You were going to ditched me for Linus."

This made Charlie roll his eyes.

"Jealous of your brother? You know that if it wasn't super important I would chose you."

"What is so important?"

"Come on Luce, it is just a project. Anyway, what is so important that you are pretending to be mad at me because I am going to meet up with Linus first?"

Pulling him down the hall toward the library she said, "I had an idea."

"Okay, that is never a good thing. What is it?"

"I want your help...", Here she paused for effect before rushing into the rest, "...convincing Schroeder to be with me."

Charlie stopped walking and Lucy, who was still holding on to his arm, was pulled back. She couldn't be serious. There was no way he was helping her get Schroeder. She belonged with him, Charlie Brown. He wouldn't be able to get her if he was helping her with another guy. She was staring at him and he had this overwhelming desire to kiss her. Which was crazy and he knew doing that would ruin everything.

"So, what do you think?" She asked. He could tell by the look on her face she was hopeful he would be on her side.

"No." He said before turning around and heading back the way they came.

"Wait Char, no?" She was following him.

"No. I will not help you."

"Why?"

Charlie Brown spun around. Lucy almost ran into him, good because he wanted to make sure she understood him.

"No. I will not help you get with Schroeder. I don't think he deserves you, or even Sally for that matter. If I am being completely honest I don't care for him at all. Actually I'm most excited about graduation because I can get far away from stupid Schroeder. I pray every night that he will move far away and play his stupid piano and leave me alone."

When he finish and had turned away from her he realized maybe he had over reacted a little. Lucy seemed to think the same thing. She got in front of him and put her hands on his shoulders.

"You are a great brother, Char, but Sally is old enough to make her own decisions."

She was unbelievable.

"This isn't about Sally. I am not being an overprotective brother. This is about you."

Charlie put his hands on both sides of her face. Lowering his voice, he looked into her eyes.

"He isn't right for you, Lu. I won't help you get him but I will help you get over him."

Lucy closed her eyes before pulling away from him.

"You don't need to come to Library if you aren't going to help me. Violet will be better anyway. I'm sure she will know exactly what to do."

She was walking away from him and the panic was starting to set in.

"Lu, don't push me away."

"I'm not… I will see you tomorrow." With that she left him standing in the hallway.
