Crushing

Seamus stared at her. Lavender was in the middle of a conversation with Parvati. The girls' heads were bent together as they whispered secrets that no one else was privy too.

He watched her. He watched the way her dirty blond hair bounced as she threw her head back and laughed. He watched the twinkle in her eyes when she found something particularly amusing. He watched the way she nearly bounced in her seat, her body unable to contain her utter excitement.

"Did you know staring is one step away from stalking?" Dean asked as he sat down next to Seamus.

The Irishman ripped his gaze away from the fourth year girl to glare at his best friend. "I'm not stalking her. I'm just admiring her."

Dean raised his eyebrows. "That's what all stalkers say."

Seamus crossed his arms over his chest. "I can't help it. Lavender is so pretty. And she's so happy and sweet. And her laugh is like the ringing of bells, don't you think?"

Dean rolled his eyes. "Oh Merlin, you have it bad."

Seamus blushed bright red. "I don't have it bad. I just think she's pretty awesome. Don't you think she's awesome?"

"She's okay, I guess, but obviously you think she's more than just okay."

Seamus nodded. "I wonder if she has a date to the Yule Ball."

"You can ask her."

Seamus turned and faced his friend, his eyes wide with astonishment. "Just ask her? Are you kidding me? If she says she's going with someone else, I'd be completely broken!"

Dean arched an eyebrow. "Wow. Never knew you to be so dramatic. It's just asking a girl out. It's not that big of a deal."

"When you start crushing on a girl, I'll make sure to remind you of that," Seamus spat.

Dean didn't seem unnerved by Seamus' sudden anger. "Well, you'll never know unless you ask. It would suck if you don't ask, and she actually wanted to go with you to the Yule Ball. Think about the lost chance."

Seamus knew Dean was right. The worst she could say was 'no.' And if she did say 'no,' he would just be broken and never date again. Then he could forever blame Dean because of the lousy advice. "Fine," he muttered.

He stood up and with his head held high, he strode over to where the girls sat. He cleared his throat. Lavender and Parvati stopped talking to each other to look at him.

There was silence for a moment while they waited patiently for him to say something.

"Lavender, would you like to go to the Yule Ball with me?" Seamus asked in a rush before he lost his nerve.

Lavender and Parvati shared a look. Then Lavender, with her pretty smile, and even prettier hair, shrugged. "Sure," she answered with a smile.

Seamus couldn't stop the wide grin that spread across his face. "Great!" He turned and walked back to Dean. He had a date with Lavender Brown!
