Underneath the Underneath

Disclaimer: I clearly don't own Naruto or make money from this.

A/N: It has been much longer than I expected and I deeply regret making you wait so long for this chapter. I'm not going to lie to you, I planned to have this up several weeks ago. On the seventh of June to be precise. However, when I went to grab the legal pad I had my notes on I couldn't find it and couldn't remember what the final matches were supposed to be. I just found it so we are back in business. In any event on to the story!

In response to multiple reviews: I noticed that a lot of people got confused on the seventh of June and I think I know what happened. The site and app don't differentiate between chapter revisions, additions or when a chapter is deleted. Normally, if I post an author's note as a chapter I take it down anywhere between 2-24 hours prior to the new chapter going up. Since I intended for the new chapter to go up on the seventh of June I deleted the author's note causing the story to be listed as "updated" with no way to tell what had been updated. I apologize for the confusion.

*************Explosive Matches***********

"Now that the ten minute break is over we will begin the one on one matches. Will Kimiko Namikaze and Rock Lee report to the arena floor for their match?" It didn't take long before the two genin were in front of them and looking at him expectantly. Nodding his head he brought his hand down.

"First match of the semi-finals begin!" No sooner than the words had left his mouth Kimiko surged forward, vanishing from most of the spectator's sight, and met Lee, who had followed her example, head on in a fierce bout of taijutsu that very few could follow. Every now and then they would reappear to regain their footing before vanishing once more. Then without warning the two reappeared locked in a stalemate as Lee struggled to try and overpower Kimiko, who was smiling at the green clad boy.

"That's some strength you have there. Not many can keep up with me."

"I try my hardest especially since I have little to no chakra available to use."

"While that may be true, don't think that I am unaware you have been converting your chakra to doton chakra internally to harden your body and absorb my blows better."

"I had hoped to keep that a secret much longer. Oh well." Lee said breaking away from the girl and quickly drawing several rods from his hip pouch. Jumping away from the girl he removed his weights and launched them at her before connecting all of the rods together to form a bo staff. Throwing himself forward once more he twirled the staff and swung it towards her hoping the increase in speed would help to catch her off guard. Much to his dismay it didn't as she ducked under the swing and quickly put distance between them all the while weaving hand seals.

"Katon: Gokakyu no jutsu." Lee stared at the fire ball heading straight at him and narrowed his eyes before spinning the staff rapidly in front of him creating a makeshift shield. Kimiko was about to comment on the nearly suicidal move when the whole staff lit up from end to end with seals that began to release a massive volume of water that was following the staff's movements.

"As I said, I have little chakra to work with however, I don't need that much when my opponent has a massive volume that I can use against them."

"I see. Seals that react to any chakra that isn't pre-programmed into them much like personal storage seals. All you need is a spark of chakra to tell them what they are doing. Absorbing or releasing. Even civilians have that much chakra. Well played. That actually shuts down primary ninjutsu users." Kimiko praised as the fireball was finally dispersed. However, her surprise didn't end there as Lee continued to spin the staff as he launched towards her the remaining water taking on a thinner more dangerous form.

"It also gives me a faux ninjutsu that is not only unable to be copied but can only be used by those with my level of speed and strength." He added as Kimiko was forced to dodge a make shift suiton: suiben.

"Quite dangerous. However, not unbeatable. Shakton: Daijohappa." No sooner than her sentence ended a massive reddish-white orb that she threw towards Lee who dodged quickly. However, when the ball met the ground it exploded and the heat alone was able to evaporate what remained of the water. Not deterred in the least Lee shot forward and once more swung the staff hoping to end the match before he was forced to give to much more away. Something that Kimiko wouldn't allow as she unsealed a sword and met his staff halfway only to hear a clang as they met.

"Metal staff to prevent being cut through. Chakra metal?" She asked in curiosity. Lee didn't respond before jumping back and spinning the staff once more before hurling the weapon at Kimiko as a make shift projectile. Knocking the staff aside Kimiko turned back to Lee in amusement only to sweat drop at his stance.

"Shomon Kai!"

"This is taking it a bit far for an exam don't you think?" She yelped jumping out of the way just barely avoiding the fist that slammed into the ground demolishing it.

"So is terraforming."

"Touche." She said cursing as she channeled chakra to her limbs and appeared behind the boy knocking him unconscious. "Sorry but Naruto would be upset if you continued to hurt yourself. That strategy would have worked on almost anyone but me."

"Winner Namikaze Kimiko!"

With the kages...

"Is there anything your genin can't do?" A asked in amusement.

"Mmm...I don't think any of them are ready to face a bijuu alone..." Minato said after a few moments of contemplation making the kage groan.

"Of course." Onoki grumbled. Minato just chuckled nervously as Rasa glared at the field.

"I will, however, be having a conversation with his jonin for teaching him something so risky at such an important stage in his development."

Back in the arena...

"Next match Hyuga Hinata vs. Kurotsuchi." As the two kunoichi met in the arena Hinata felt her eyes narrow slightly at the girl who was leveling her with a glare.

"Are both competitors ready?" As they nodded in affirmation he brought his hand down and jumped out of the way none to soon as both girls rapidly launched a fireball at one another before Hinata launched forward and withdrew a kunai. Kurotsuchi cursed drawing her own before letting out another string of curses as a jolt of lightening ran through her body. Jumping away she began forming hand seals again while trying to maintain the distance.

"Doton: Kaido Shokutsu." She called hoping to throw the heiress off before once more cursing as Hinata burst into a puddle of water right before Kurotsuchi was forced to dodge a hail of arrows. Quickly scanning the area her eyes widened as she looked up at the sky to see Hinata above her.

"How are you doing that?!"

"Sec~ret!" The heiress singsonged before releasing another arrow and focusing. "Aro Kage Bunshin no jutsu." The one arrow that had been flying towards the kunoichi suddenly began hundreds if not thousands of arrows, all of them crackling with raiton chakra.

"Katon: Gokakyu no jutsu." Launching the fireball towards the arrows directly above her, Kurotsuchi held her breath. A second later a second volley of arrows struck the kunoichi only to reveal Kurotsuchi's quick use of the kawarimi.Cursing quietly Hinata sealed her bow quickly and spun while gathering her chakra.

"Shugohakke Rokujūyon Shō." Kurotsuchi was momentarily surprised at the quick counter to her attack and was sent flying away from the girl as numerous cuts appeared where she had been struck.

"I have to say that your much better than most of Konoha kunoichi I've seen." Kurotsuchi admitted while standing, something was most definitely a blow to her pride.

"I try my hardest. That's all anyone in the world can do. Try to be the best they can be and never be content with average skills. Being average without the motivation to improve will only end in death." Hinata replied bringing herself to the ground. Kurotsuchi couldn't help but laugh at the statement.

"This is true." Standing herself the Iwa nin took a calming breath while staring at the puzzle before her. She had gone into this fight believing that she had the perfect strategy to dal with a Hyuga. After all, despite her display of spurning clan traditions there was no way that she was good enough or confident enough to fight her at a distance. Yet, she hadn't landed a single blow on the girl who was standing straight and somewhat defiantly.

'She is much like her teammates. She is definitely being trained at a level higher than genin or even chunin. Has their jonin ignored the peace time regulations or are they trying for a new generation of sanin? She is good at close and long range. How about mid range then?' Weaving through hand seals quickly, she inhaled.

"Katon: Gokakyu no jutsu." Kurotsuchi intoned once more.

"Katon: Gokakyu no jutsu." Hinata countered as both fireballs collided in mid-air and began to try and overpower the other. Neither kunoichi moved as they refused to give up the fight for dominance. Gritting her teeth, Hinata slowly began a second set of seals.

"Futon: Daitoppa." Without warning her fireball doubled in strength and easily overpowered the other and sped towards the second kunoichi who made quick use of kawarimi once more to escape. Unfortunately, Kurotsuchi had no time to breath as Hinata was upon her once more this time with a taijutsu that was most definitely not the Juken. Dodging a left hook aimed at her head, Kurotsuchi was quick to retaliate turning the match into a taijutsu bout once more.

"Tell me do you have four chakra natures? You have used suiton, futon, katon and if I'm not mistaken raiton." Kurotsuchi bit out at the heiress.

"No. Two of them are just jutsu I have learned to supplement my natures and take advantage of combinations." Hinata replied as she managed to break through Kurotsuchi's guard and bury her fist in the her stomach. The blow was quickly followed by several juken strikes shutting down the chakra in her arms and hands. An open palm to the stomach sent her flying away from Hinata and rolling along the ground. Hinata took a calming breath and held her stance as she waited for the girl to get up.

"You combined the juken with another taijutsu style didn't you?" Kurotsuchi gasped in pain as she struggled to rise.

"Wrong again. My second taijutsu style is to cover the forwardness of the juken. I just trained with both to the point that I can use them interchangeably at will. I've shut down the tenketsu in your arms, hands and core. Please forfeit. Fighting in that condition can cause irreparable damage to the chakra network and body." Hinata informed her opponent. Kurotsuchi growled while struggling in vain to get to her feet only to bow her head in defeat.

"I can't get continue." she grit out angry at her loss to the Konoha nin.

"Winner of the match: Hyuga Hinata." The roar of applause was nearly deafening to the two genin as Hinata walked over to Kurotsuchi and held out her hand.

"Do you think I need pity or charity?" Kurotsuchi growled.

"No. You are a very powerful kunoichi and a proud nin of Iwa. You need neither pity nor charity. This is neither. It's called good sportsmanship. I'm offering my aid in recognition of your strength in gratitude for the good fight. Besides, I'm sure you would like your chakra back sooner rather than later." Hinata explained feeling her irritation at the Iwa nins continue to grow at the hatred they refused to let go of.

"No thanks I can manage on my own." Sighing as she retracted her hand Hinata turned to walk away but not before glancing towards Kurotsuchi and shaking her head.

"You can be as strong as stone all you want, but a single stone on it's own can't do anything. Just like a single ember with nothing to burn and no oxygen can't do anything on it's own. Eventually, they need help. Whether it's to keep other's warm, safe or to hold an entire mountain. There is no element on the planet that works alone Kurotsuchi. Attempting to isolate yourself from everything but Iwa will only harm you in the end. I'm not telling you to throw away your pride either. Nor am I asking you to make friends with other nations. I'm only asking you to open yourself up to actually having friends and accepting help when you need it."

"Tch. Damn tree huggers." No sooner than Kurotsuchi was off the field silence reigned once more.

"Alright, will genin team eleven please report to the center of the field. We will now randomly select the genin that will fight against Uzumaki-Namikaze Naruto." As Kimiko and Naruto joined Hinata they smiled at one another and nodded.

With the Kage...

"You don't see an entire team make it this far in the exams together. As much as it hurts to admit that team of yours Hokage-dono is quite impressive." Onoki begrudgingly admitted. Rasa grunted in agreement but said nothing else.

"Their jonin is adamant about making them the next generation of sanin and as long as he doesn't push them further than they are ready I don't mind. Then again he said he is being forced to get creative with their training to keep up as they are absorbing everything that he teaches them at an impressive rate." Minato boasted proud of the team.

"Who is their jonin?" Rasa finally asked.

"The Sandaime saw fit to assign Hatake Kakashi as their jonin and I couldn't agree more with the choice." Minato replied honestly.

"I see. I admit I'm really jealous of all the prodigies that your village seems to produce." Onoki grumbled.

"Oh no. I can assure they are no prodigies and they would find being referred to one as an insult. Sometimes they have to be carried home or to bed because they have over done their training and passed out. I know for a fact that in addition to their clan training and training with Kakashi they meet each other around I'd say four or five in the morning to train together. After their training with Kakashi is done for the day, unless they have to prepare for a mission they spend at least another three or four hours together training. In addition, Kakashi has found it impossible to keep them idle on days that they are supposed to be resting from their missions." Minato replied making several eyebrows raise.

"They are truly dedicated to becoming the best possible version of themselves in order to protect their loved ones and the village. I couldn't be anything but proud of them."

"Speaking of prodigies, I see that your village's vaunted Uchiha isn't here." Rasa remarked.

"Sasuke received severe potentially career ending injuries during the preliminaries as a result of his arrogance."

"By your adopted daughter if rumors serve true." Onoki added in. Rasa felt his eyes widen at the implications of the such a thing happening. 'Is this why we have lost contact with Orochimaru?'

"Oh? I fear I hadn't asked for details, only whether or not they passed." Rasa confessed.

"Yup. Girl warned him not to use his sharingan in her presence and he didn't heed her warning. Tore his eyes from his head before anyone could stop her." A replied snickering.

"I'm afraid Kimiko had some rather bad encounters with the sharingan before she came to live in Konoha. So when she saw them she reacted. Unfortunately, remembering the incidents causes her to become angry. We are working on it though." Minato replied sweat dropping at the reminder. Rasa was quiet as he observed the kunoichi that had subdued the Ichibi carefully.

'That girl is not only dangerous but vicious as well. We need to keep an eye on her.' Unknown to him Onoki had the same thoughts.

With the jonin...

"Yes! I told you they would be the last ones standing!" Kakashi cried victoriously as the other jonin groaned and reached into their pockets to pay up.

"Kakashi, what exactly have you been teaching them?" Asuma complained.

"Everything that they ask for so long as it is appropriate for their age, development and rank. Those three tear through everything I give them and then demand more. I have often found myself creating new exercises to hone their chakra control, and in Hinata's case reserves, just to buy time to come up with something new to teach them. They make my learning curve, without the sharingan, look slow. Just never call them prodigies. They consider that to be an insult." Kakashi replied happily.

"You really hit the jackpot with those three." Ebisu complimented.

"I wouldn't worry about it to much, Aimi seems to be shaping up nicely as a kunoichi. You have done wonders with her Ebisu."

"You really think so?"

"Hai. Just keep at it. I'm sure she will surprise you one of these days."

"She already has, Kakashi. She already has."

Back in the arena...

"Alright, inside this hat we have both of your names. If your name is drawn then you will receive a pass to the finals. The one that is not drawn will fight Naruto. Understood?"

"Hai." Nodding to the three genin, Hayate reached in and drew the slip before opening it up.

"Kimiko will pass to the next round. The last fight will be Hyuga Hinata vs. Uzumaki-Namikaze Naruto." After a few seconds of silence as the decision was made Hinata raised her hand hesitantly.

"I forfeit." The decision left everyone speechless.

"May I ask why? Especially after coming this far." Hayate asked in curiosity.

"We have been teammates for ten months and in those ten months I have never once beaten Naruto in a spar. The truth is he has more stamina, physical strength and chakra than I do. The most I could do was draw out the match and wear myself out. Even if I did manage to beat him, I would be in no condition to fight Kimiko and would have to forfeit anyway as she also falls in the above category. I am well aware of my limits and right now I am not ready to fight either one of them." Hayate nodded at the sound reasoning and briefly glanced at Minato who smiled softly and nodded.

"Hyuga Hinata was forfeit the match. The finals will be held in five minutes to allow everyone a chance to stretch their legs." As the three left the field Hinata blushed and looked over at Naruto.

"Sorry Naruto-kun."

"No problem Hinata-chan. You knew your limits and didn't try to fight a losing battle, even if I think that you underestimated your strength. That is what they look for in a chunin. You'll make it for sure."

"What the bonehead said. I, too, think that you underestimated yourself back there. However, if you felt that you weren't ready then so be it. It just means more intense training when we are done here." Hinata nodded happily as she made her way towards Kakashi and the other genin.

"You did well. Hold your head high with pride Hinata." Kakashi admonished making her blush but straighten out all the same. The other jonin nodded in pride while the genin stared in shock at the display that had been made among the three genin of team eleven.

"Naruto, what was that jutsu you did to that Iwa genin?" Ino asked in concern.

"Oh that? That wasn't a jutsu it was a seal. You saw how his anger and hatred of Konoha and its nin's clouded his judgement?"

"Hai."

"That seal is one in a series that I am creating to make a person confront emotions like hatred and anger and come to terms with them so that they don't go into a rage like that and can keep their heads in battle better. It forced him into his mind and as we speak he is face to face with his hatred. Unfortunately, the seal won't release until he comes to terms with his hatred and overcomes it. I have another version for training purposes but this was the better alternative to try and help him."

"Wait you mean he is trapped like that? Forever?!" Ino yelped.

"No just until he defeats his hatred. It really is up to him when he leaves the seal. Unfortunately, if he is as stubborn in this as he was in listening then it might be for forever." Naruto said sweat dropping.

"You can't honestly believe that right? I mean a seal like that is impossible and even if it was then there is no way that Naruto-baka could have learned it!" Sakura shrieked from where she was sitting.

"It is possible. I, myself, have used the seal for my training." Kakashi snapped making the genin flinch and look away. "Also, Naruto didn't learn it. If you were listening, he was the one that created it."

"In any event, Naruto what do you think your odds of beating Kimiko are?" Shikamaru asked curiously. He remembered the fight they had at the graduation exam and was wondering if they had seen everything.

"Um...If she's holding back...maybe 50%...if she's fighting seriously...none." Naruto confessed. "Kimiko is stronger than me and far more experienced."

"Eh?!" The genin shouted in disbelief.

"The why are you fighting her?!"

"To see where I need to improve of course and to show off to the judges that I am chunin material of course."

"That makes no sense! If she's that strong then forfeit like Hinata did!" Ino countered. Kimiko groaned and rubbed her head.

"What is with you Yamanaka? You take one step forwards and then randomly with no warning take three steps backwards. Tell me, were you allowed to quit when you were attacked by the demons brothers, or were you forced to fight them?" Ino's eyes widened.

"You had a chance to decide whether or not to quit the mission afterwards as a much stronger opponent was expected but not when the first complication arose. Hinata's reasoning was sound. She was incapable of fighting Naruto and then me if she defeated him. She made a strategic retreat that allowed her to continue the mission without needlessly risking her life. Like Asuma did when he wrote back to the Hokage to ask for back up. In Naruto's case he doesn't have the same excuse. In essence, Hinata retreated from the battle to continue the mission while leaving the stronger member of the team to fight the threat. A common tactic on the battlefield."

"By forfeiting without trying, I'm telling the judges that I'm not ready to handle a mission escalation on a mission I'm in charge of." Naruto continued making Ino's eyes widen. "See? I could forfeit like Hinata but the circumstances are different."

"I see. I suppose when you put it that way it does make sense." She mused. Then she shook her head. "I still think you just want to fight her."

"I do but I also want to be promoted. C-rank missions are getting boring. We are also out of genin appropriate jutsu to learn and master." He added as an after thought making everyone groan.

"You're hopeless."

"I know." Tilting his head to the side he smirked. "Time to run. Ready Kimiko-nee-chan?"

"H-Hai." She whispered shakily before following her adopted brother.

In the arena...

"Alright the final match of the chunin exams will now begin. Are both competitor's ready?"

"Hai."

"Good. Then begin." As soon as he lowered his hands Hayate jumped from the ring hoping he was fast enough as the two blurred from sight in a taijutsu fight that he was certain Gai would approve of. Neither of them were visible to the civilians, genin and most chunin. The only sign that they were even still there was the ground breaking occasionally and the sound of something impacting the ground. Then without warning the two blurred into sight again both holding onto different hand signs as they launched their jutsu at one another.

"Katon: Gokakyu no jutsu."

"Suiton: Daibakufu no jutsu." The massive size of the fireball Kimiko released was a testament to just how much chakra she had at her disposal as it easily dwarfed anything that had been produced in the exams. However, the crowd was in stunned silence as Naruto cast his water jutsu without a source to pull off of. The water jutsu slammed into the fireball and continued towards the vixen as she darted out of the way and flew at Naruto once more before the jutsu had even ended. Naruto reacted just as quickly and shifted his hand sign casting yet another jutsu.

"Suiton: Suiryudan no jutsu." A segment of the water that remained separated from the torrent and quickly took the shape of a dragon that slammed straight into Kimiko's side only to reveal a shattered log indicating the use of Kawarimi. Ducking a swipe from the vixen's claws, Naruto twisted his body and landed on top of the water and kicked outwards sending water towards the his friend's eyes hoping to distract her. Kimiko never once halted her assault as she ducked under the water and continued to assail the blonde forcing him closer and closer to the wall.

Sensing her intentions Naruto smirked at the vixen confusing everyone watching before vanishing without warning again in a manner reminiscent of the Hiraishin. Startled Kimiko froze and began to look around eventually looking up to see Naruto descending on her with a kunai held in a reverse grip. Grinning at the blonde's ingenuity she caught his hand and threw him across the arena making him skid atop the water. Managing to come to a stop, Naruto grinned at his teammate as the fight finally slowed to the point everyone could follow it.

"I see you managed to evolve them. You also seem to have a better grasp on the hansha." She remarked drawing attention to Naruto's eyes which were on display for the first time. Unlike in the forest when they had been a banana yellow lotus bud on a pale turquoise background, there was a light green partially opened lotus bud on a pale turquoise background.

"Yeah."

"I guess this means that we can kick it up a notch then." Kimiko grinned making the hairs on the back of Naruto's neck stand on end.

"I guess so." No sooner than the words had left his mouth Kimiko was in front of him and was already in mid punch. However, the punch didn't connect as Naruto's body broke apart into water particles that almost flowed around her arm and body only to reform behind her.

"What was that?" She asked in surprise. Naruto just gave a grin before vanishing himself only for a foot to slam into Kimiko's back sending her flying. Catching herself quickly, Kimiko was able to deflect a second attack and once more sent Naruto flying before forming familiar hand seals.

"Shakuton: Yudaina Chikyu no arekuruu kaze."

"Crap!" As the jutsu made contact with the water, a mist began to form from the steam concealing the arena from view and masking the fight that could be heard through it.

"Futon: Daitoppa!" No sooner than the mist cleared, Naruto could be seen kneeling on the ground hands still in the seals for the jutsu and Kimiko was behind him claws resting against his throat a small trickle of blood flowing down his neck.

"You're getting better but you still need to work on telegraphing your jutsu and shifting from ninjutsu to taijutsu." Kimiko informed him.

"Despite the fact I could use Mizu no jokyoto escape like earlier, we would just wind up in this position again. Proctor, I forfeit." Naruto announced making several eyes widen in shock.

"Very well. The winner of this match and the chunin exams is Namikaze Kimiko." Once more the roar of approval from the crowd was deafening. Relaxing her stance and withdrawing her claws Kimiko helped Naruto to his feet and they smiled at one another. The battle had been intense and they both had fun in the process.

With the kages...

"There is no way that those two are genin!" Rasa protested in shock. Yes, he had seen what they had done earlier but that had blown all of it out of the water.

"Would you like to see their public files?" Minato replied in amusement.

"You...how?!" Onoki spluttered.

"Kids with a lot of time on their hands, to much chakra and an insatiable desire to protect the ones that they love."

"I knew that Hatake's team was good from the joint missions that they have done with my shinobi but that was insane." A agreed nodding his head. Laughing Minato stood and headed towards the edge of the balcony.

"Can I have all the finalists who are able report to the arena floor?" He requested and smiled as they did so quickly.

"Look alive, all of you have performed marvelously today showing both your individual skills as well as what your village's have to offer. Each one of you came here for the pride and reputation of your villages and you have done them all proud. I will be informing the Konoha genin of the decision on their promotions in three days time. I suspect that the other kage will want to wait till you have returned to your respective villages. It was an honor to see such talented genin from each village that participated this year. If you take anything away from the exams this year let it be this: Never stop trying to achieve your dreams. So long as you have the determination and will to see things through to the end, anything is possible. After all, nothing is impossible until you stop trying. I wish everyone a good day and a safe trip home. Thank you." Turning back to the visiting kage he nodded in respect to each of them before looking directly at Rasa.

"If it is within your schedule I would like to speak with you about a debt between Konoha and Suna as well as correct some errors in our treaty." Rasa pursued his lips before nodding.

"When you have time Minato, I would like to discuss a proper treaty between our villages as well." A informed him, making Minato smile warmly.

Several minutes later...

"I apologize for bringing this up so suddenly Rasa however, I feel that it was better to settle our debt before anything else."

"I fail to see what Suna would owe to Konoha." Rasa bit out stiffly. Minato merely shook his head.

"No, you miss understand. It is Konoha that owes Suna a debt. It seems that despite the agreed upon price for the few goods the two countries import from one another, Suna has been underpaid for the last five years straight." Minato informed the wind shadow making his eyes widen in shock. "Please have a seat. The over sight occurred due to some loop holes in the treaty that I want to close. There is also the number of missions that Konoha has received from your daimyo and other clients that my shinobi are unsuited for or don't ave knowledge of the terrain to accomplish properly. I was hoping to discuss a mission exchange between our villages for such occasions."

"I..." Rasa found himself speechless.

"At the very least it would prevent Suna from feeling the need to ally with someone like Orochimaru in the future. You know he planned to assassinate you on the way to the exams right?"
