The Love of a Lycan Ch. 3

Kari sat outside by the Black Lake in the early morning light. She took in a deep relaxing breath, enjoying the various smells as the early morning dew covered the plant life. Very few knew of her morning routine and favorite pass time. She enjoyed the silence away from the busy castle. Just listening to the sounds of nature around her, the fresh smell of the air and the cold breeze on her tan skin. Inhaling deeply, Kari caught a most tantalizing scent coming closer to where she was sitting. A shadow fell beside her as the gorgeous blonde from the French Academy stood just behind her to the left. Kari felt a small smile pull at her lips as the blonde remained silent.

"I didn't think anyone would be awake this early in the morning, let alone out here in the cold," Kari said to start a conversation. The blonde remained silent for a moment, before slowly sitting down beside the American. "Bon Jour," came the melodic voice. Kari felt her smile widen at hearing such a lovely sound. "My name is Kari. What may I call such a beautiful creature as yourself?" The blonde stared at Kari, blushing lightly much to the silver witch's delight. "Fleur," she said softly. Kari nodded, still smiling. "Fleur, the name certainly fits such beauty."

Fleur frowned at the comment, which confused Kari slightly. "Why because I'm a delicate flower? Think I need protecting and just some useless piece of eye candy," the blonde suddenly hissed. Surprised Kari held up her hands in surrender. "Whoa there darlin, easy. You certainly are beautiful like a flower, and clearly have the thorns to protect yourself." Fleur sighed and turned to face the lake. "I am sorry. Far too often I have people thinking that I am nothing but a pretty face." Kari nodded in understanding before standing up. "Well in my experience that more beautiful the flower, the more deadly they are," Kari winked at the blonde before starting to head back into the castle.

Fleur turned back to the silver-eyed mysterious women as she began to walk away. "What are you exactly," she asked suddenly, "it feels familiar somehow but I cannot place it." Kari stopped at the question and slowly turned her head to look at the French witch. With a smirk she responded, "Veela are always so curious. See you around my beautiful flower." With that she continued into the castle to meet with Hermione. Thoughts of the brunette brought a smile to Kari's face. The shy little bookworm had certainly intrigued the young American. She just couldn't understand how such a brilliant mind, and beautiful soul would allow that red headed garbage Shute treat her so poorly. It had been a week now that the other schools had arrived, and through that time of getting to know Hermione, Kari had noticed how she was treated. That boy would always complain about not getting enough food, how unfair their teachers were, and most annoyingly would pester Hermione to do his homework for him. Not check it, not proofread it like Harry and Neville did, no. He wanted Hermione to DO his work for him. What pissed Kari off the most was that he would harass her until she caved in and did it. That was not friendship in Kari's eyes. There was not much that Kari hated more than someone using another for their own gain.

As Kari entered the main hallway she saw the center of her thoughts standing with Harry and the trash bin. When she came nearer, Kari heard them arguing yet again over Ron's homework. Nope, Kari thought to herself, not today little fucker. Stepping up to Hermione, Kari threw her arm around the brunette's shoulders gaining her attention.

"Hey beautiful, sorry it took so long. Had a hell of a time finding the perfect spot." Harry and Ron looked at Kari in confusion. "What d'ya mean," the red head asked. Kari smirked at him," Hermione and I are having breakfast out by the Black Lake." Ron's face suddenly lit up with a smile, "yeah! That sounds great! We can get away from the Slytherin and.." Kari quickly cut him off. "Sorry dude ladies only today. Maybe next time," she said as she began to lead Hermione outside. Hermione stared at Kari in silent question, make no mistake she was thrilled to be having alone time with the silver witch. However she was pretty sure that they had made no such plans.

Kari lead them both out to the black lake in silence. Once they sat down Kari couldn't resist the urge to pull the brunette into her lap, earning an adorable "eep" from the younger witch. Hermione's wide eyes made Kari chuckle before she was smacked in the shoulder by said brunette. "Kari! What was that about? We never made plans to come out here and why on earth did you pull me into your lap?" Kari continued to chuckle for a moment. "Well beautiful I decided to save you from that idiot you call a friend. You shouldn't be doing his work for him darlin. As for the second question, well I just couldn't resist having such a beauty in my lap," she grinned mischievously. The blush was reward enough to Kari even as Hermione smacked her shoulder again.

"You are a big pervert aren't you," the embarrassed girl asked as she hid her face behind her hair. Kari grinned, "yup, and having you squirming is in my lap is my goal in life." Hermione groaned at the comment before scooting off of the perv's lap, much to both of their displeasure. Oh well, Hermione thought, I suppose I can compromise on that given how beautiful and smart she is. Kari pouted at losing Hermione inn her lap but didn't press anything. They sat in comfortable silence for a while longer before the brunette stood up, dusting off the dirt and grass from her skirt. "Well its time to head to class. I hope you're happy making me starve until lunch, seeing as you made me miss breakfast." Kari stood up next to her, then tossed an apple at the shocked teen. "I would never deny my precious 'Mione her meal." Sighing as another blush filled her face again. She wondered briefly if it was possible to turn permenantly red from blushing so often.

The two headed into the castle, Kari walking Hermione to her first class before heading off to join her own fellow classmates. Hermione sat down in her usual seat next to Harry, who looked ready to strangle someone. It didn't take her long to realize why. Ron was complaining about his homework not being done and how he was going to get a bad grade thanks to her. For the rest of the morning until lunch he just would not shut up. As they began exiting their last class of the day to head to the Great Hall for lunch Harry had finally snapped at Ron to shut up. "Honestly Ron you cannot blame Hermione for your failing grade. You should've done the homework when we did but instead you chose to bugger off and play chess instead. It's not her fault. Now stop complaining and maybe actually learn something from this." Everyone stared at The-Boy-Who-Lived in utter shock. Harry almost never snapped at Ron like that, even in defense of Hermione, often choosing to remain out of their arguments.

Ron's face quickly lost its shocked expression in exchange for anger. "How the bloody hell can you say that? I'm your best mate! Why are you suddenly standing up for the useless know-it-all?" Harry just sighed and shook his head at his male friend. Ron continued his rant, slowly getting louder and drawing a larger crowd of students. "It's her bloody fault I got a troll on my paper! She should've done it when I asked her to, but no instead she chose to trot off with that slag from America!" Hermione started to see red at that statement. Insulting her was one thing, she was used to it, but to insult Kari for no reason? That was just unacceptable! Before Hermione could say or do anything however, a hand clamped down on Ron's shoulder and swung him around. The golden trio were all shocked to see Kari standing there, her face stoic, but Hermione could see the anger in her eyes.

No one saw the punch until it was too late, many wincing at the very loud CRACK, as Ron fell to the floor clutching his now broken nose. Kari continued to stare emotionlessly at him before saying quietly, almost in a growl, "if you ever insult Hermione like that again I will ensure you become a permanent resident at the hospital." Ron lay on the ground crying in pain and trying to stop the bleeding. The rest of the students were frozen in place staring at the scene before them.

"What are you looking at," Kari suddenly barked causing many to jump in fear," disperse!" Kari smirked as all but Harry and Hermione quickly fled the hall towards their destinations. Seamus and Dean both picked up Ron to haul him off to the infirmary. Hermione finally snapped out of her own shock and smack Kari on the arm as hard as she could. "Ow! What was that for," Kari asked pretending to be hurt. "What were you thinking? Do you realize the trouble you could get into for hitting another student?" Hermione was furious, how could Kari do something so reckless? Kari shrugged and threw an arm around Hermione's shoulders. "He deserved it. I'll gladly do it again too. It isn't right for him to treat one of his supposed friends like that. Even more so to use said friend to do all his work for him. He needs to learn that if he wants anything in life he needs to work for it himself." Hermione blinked at Kari's little rant, shocked at seeing such sincerity in those gorgeous eyes. If she was being honest with herself, Hermione would admit that it felt absolutely amazing to have someone actually stand up for her for once. Kari pulled Hermione closer and began leading them to the Great Hall for lunch, all three happily forgetting about the incident with Ron for the time being.
