"Quiet, Jack."
Riza stirred at the sound of voices. She was disorientated for a brief moment while she woke from her slumber, half tempted to close her eyes and let sleep reclaim her once more.
"I am being quiet," was her son's hushed reply.
"You're talking," Roy retorted.
"You spoke first!"
Riza chuckled at her son's indignant whisper. He'd become more and more like his father as he grew older, and Riza had noticed a more prominent change over the years. He took after Roy a lot, and it was always entertaining to watch. Her two boys were perfect, and she wouldn't change them for the world.
Although now… She wouldn't be the only girl in the family.
A quiet sound to her right caught Riza's attention. In the hospital crib was a small baby girl. She was tiny, but perfect in every way. Like all werewolf children, she was blind when born and Riza had to guide her little girl into the world.
Roy had been present outside the room during the birth, anxiously waiting to see Riza and to see she was all right. After Jack's birth he was much calmer about the whole process, but still wasn't entirely happy with it. Riza understood the reason, but she too still wanted Roy in the room with her during the birth. However, it was safer not to have him there. She would do anything to protect her children, and if sacrificing having Roy by her side during their birth was what she had to do, then Riza would do it. So would Roy. Plus, she knew he was outside the door. He'd never truly left her to do it alone.
Another noise left her baby girl and she began to fuss in her swaddle.
Leaning over, Riza picked up her daughter with the biggest smile on her face.
"Hello, baby girl," she crooned, pulling her against her chest. Her eyesight still wasn't great, but little Mia Mustang managed to open them and blearily look around the hospital room. Eventually her gaze turned up to her mother's and Riza melted on the spot.
The door across from her creaked open, and two heads peaked through the door.
"Hey," Riza beamed at her husband and her son. "Come in," she beckoned.
"Oh, wow," Jack gasped in wonder, entering in a daze. "That's a baby."
Roy placed his hands on Jack's shoulders and steered him towards the bed.
"Jack," Riza announced, showing off their daughter and his baby sister proudly. "Meet your sister, Mia."
"Oh…" he trailed off, bewitched by her. "She's beautiful."
Jack was now in his forties but had stopped aging with the body of a someone in their mid-twenties. He would continue to age however it would be so slow, over the course of the years it would look like he didn't age at all. Werewolves were blessed with lifespans over hundreds of years, and Riza was thankful, because it gave her so much time to watch her children grow up and allowed her family to expand like she'd always wanted.
Their son looked between Roy and Riza, a happy smile on his face. Then, he returned his gaze to his sister.
"This is going to sound childish," he prefaced. "But I don't care." Jack lifted his finger to caress Mia's cheek. She jerked at the touch and opened her mouth to yawn. "I'm going to be the best big brother to you, Mia."
"This kid is literally going to the fucking death of me," Roy stated grimly as he flopped down in bed. Riza was in the same posture, too exhausted to move to change into something more comfortable to sleep.
"We had it easy with Jack."
"We did."
"Now I know how hard Rebecca and Jean had it."
"Right?" Roy groaned and lifted his hand to cover his face. "I'm too old for this."
Riza snorted. "You're barely thirty."
"I've been alive for longer than that," he griped, his voice muffled underneath his hands.
Riza snickered. "Okay, old man." She rolled over onto her side and watched him. At the "old man" comment, he pried his hands away and slowly turned, glaring at her.
"Okay, your body is in it's thirties. You can't say it's too old to deal with all this running around after her."
"I'm seventy-four in human years," he grumbled.
"But you're not a human, sweetie," Riza smiled sweetly at him.
Their bedroom door opened and Riza got a brief fear that Mia had woken up from her sleep.
She loved her daughter, she really did… But my god, she wanted to sleep.
Rebecca and Jean weren't kidding when they told her how tired they were when Julia was young. They hadn't had another kid since, and Riza didn't blame them. Compared to Mia, they had it easy with Jack. He was a walk in the park. Mia barely slept. She was at the age where the wolf was waking within her and she was literally a puppy. However, it was the energy of a puppy and a young child combined, so she was always on the go. She napped throughout the day which meant she didn't sleep for long at night.
Riza just wanted to sleep again…
Three more months. They had three more months before Mia would calm down enough and the wolf would settle into her body. The pair would become at peace with one another and wouldn't run riot at three o'clock in the morning for hours, wanting to play.
Jack entered the room without knocking and flopped down face first on his parent's bed.
"I think I'm dead."
"Why?" Riza asked, amused.
"Mia has killed me, I'm sure." He lifted his head, his eyes fearful. "I don't think I've slept in the last three days." His mouth pressed into a grim line.
"Join the club," Roy groaned. "But add two more days onto that total."
Riza chuckled at their dramatics. "At least I know where you get your attitude from, Jack. You could both be actors."
Jack frowned at his mother, pushing up onto his elbows. "I wonder where Mia gets her energy from?"
"That's called being a werewolf puppy," Riza reminded him.
"Was I ever that bad?" Jack asked.
"You were a walk in the park," Roy stated, his hands covering his face again. "We got lucky."
Riza elbowed her husband and he grunted in response but didn't move.
"We love her, don't we?"
"I'll love her more when she sleeps through the night," Roy replied.
Riza elbowed him again and this time Roy whined.
"Shut up," Riza muttered.
"Mummy?"
The three of them froze, sharing a look with each other.
Oh no. She'd only been asleep an hour.
"Uhhh, I gotta go," Jack announced, booking it from the room.
"Daddy!"
With a resigned sigh, Roy dragged himself from bed.
"Hello, Mia," Roy greeted tiredly. Despite the jokes and the moaning, Roy really did love his daughter. Riza understood his frustration because they all felt that way, but they all adored her. She was the energy and centre of their family right now, and they would all make sure she was the happiest toddler in the world.
"I had a nightmare," Mia sobbed.
Roy hushed her gently. "Do you want to tell me about it?" he asked gently.
There was movement and from Roy's response, Riza guessed Mia shook her head.
"That's okay," Roy reassured her. "Why don't you try and go back to sleep –?"
"No!"
"Mia," Roy soothed her. "I'm not going anywhere, okay? I'll keep watch while you sleep. I'll try and keep the nightmares away."
Riza quietly let out an "aw" as she listened. Rising from her bed she quietly crept from their bedroom through to Mia's. She didn't want to abandon Roy to do it all.
Entering the living room, Riza saw Jack leaning against the front door, listening in. He nodded when he heard Roy talking to Mia then left to return to his own house just a few metres away.
Despite running off when hearing Mia was awake – Riza understood the feeling – Jack waited to make sure she was okay before actually going home, and Riza appreciated that. She knew that boy would die for his sister, not that it should ever come to that, but it was true.
When Riza poked her head in, Mia was already asleep, and so was Roy. They were both out like a light. Mia was curled against Roy's side and he had his arms wrapped around her shoulders, holding her close to his body.
Grinning at the sight, Riza backed out and re-entered her own bedroom.
As she curled underneath the duvet cover, she couldn't help but pray Mia would sleep for longer than a few hours.
She slept for eight, and it was the most wonderful night Roy and Riza had ever had since Mia had been born.
