Chapter 27

Varric let loose an arrow which hit the beast in the eye causing it to shriek in pain. Garrett slashed at it's ankle while Amelie threw whatever was around at the creature. Fenris drew it's attention and was making it focus on his attacks. He was mostly dodging but able to take a swing at it's head every now and then. Think Ami, what did you do last time? Well you had your arse chewed, she thought bitterly as she picked up another large boulder. Aiming at it's face it clipped it on the temple making it stagger. Aveline dealt the killing blow. We'd knocked it over and I pinned it with a cage. I've been trying to reserve my mana but I don't think I've got enough, plus I don't think it's near weak enough this time. We need to kill it quickly. At least they were doing better than last time, nobody had been seriously injured, they were just tired which could be just as lethal. She became aware of someone shouting at her. 'Amelie!'

'Varric?' She shouted back as she watched the rogue dart back and forth avoiding it's tail. 'Idea?' She asked as she jumped back to avoid a claw.

'How did you kill that dragonling?' He said as he let loose a flurry from Bianca. 'This hide is too thick, my arrows are just boun-' He didn't get to finish his sentence as the Dragon thrust out with it's hindleg and catches him in the chest knocking him aside.

Amelie panicked for a moment but saw the dwarf get up after a moment or two. Garrett ran over and pulled his friend out the range of the swinging tail and motioned with his hand for them to take cover. 'Regroup!' He called as he pointed to a hiding spot. 'Varric flash bomb,' he instructed. It would give them a couple minutes. The rogue obliged and once Fenris had backed away and covered his eyes then he threw the explosive into the field causing a blinding flash. They all made for the area Garrett had found. The dragon scratched at it's eyes and screeched as it began to randomly attack.

'We need to kill this thing fast,' Amelie panted as she knelt beside Varric and checked his injuries. Cracked ribs, broken ribs at most; painful and it meant that he wasn't going to be any good for the rest of the battle. Amelie grabbed a health vial and tore off the wax lid forcing it into his hand. It wouldn't fix him completely but it would take the edge off.

'We need a more solid plan of attack, my weapon just isn't good enough and I can't wound the damn thing properly,' Garrett swore as he poked his head out the cover to check how they were doing on time. 'Fenris what about your glowy hand-'

Fenris shook his head. 'The chest cavity is too deep and I am not strong enough to tear out it's throat,' he said simply.

'Sparky,' Varric said through a wheeze. 'The dragonling,' he gasped.

'I don't think there's a rock big enough for her to squash it,' Hawke said trying to make some humour. 'Last time you said you pinned it-'

'It's just too strong, I don't have the mana. Even if I did, it would still be thrashing and spitting fire,' Amelie interrupts. 'We were fighting it for a lot longer, but we almost died,' she sighed.

'Sparky!' Varric said slapping her thigh to get her attention. He was finding it hard to talk and breathe, let alone move. 'Pop,' he motioned to his eye and made a crackly noise.

Realisation hit Amelie and she jumped. 'OH! Oh! OH!' She said the idea forming. 'Pop! Yes, okay, one problem. I'm gonna find it hard to get up there,' Amelie clicked her fingers. 'Can anyone get me to the head of that thing?'

'You can not be serious,' Fenris said in a flat tone.

'I can fry it's brain if I can get my hands on it's eyes, it would kill it,' she explained. 'Have you got a better plan?'

'Better plan or not we're out of time,' Garrett said as he pulled Varric out of sight and pushed Amelie to get moving as he spotted the dragon coming closer to their hiding spot. Fenris swore under his breath and ran out into the open attracting it's attention. He dove to the side to avoid the stream of fire that burst from it's jaw in a thunder, Amelie and Garrett took the initiative and circled it. 'You need to get to the head?' He asked as he looked at his blade and then looked at Amelie. 'I'm gonna suggest something crazy,' he says simply.

'Crazy is all we got!' Amelie agreed as she picked up another boulder and aimed at the eyes.

'I've got a powerful swing right? So if you jump at the right time I can get my blade under your feet and give you a good shove in the right direction,' he looked at the dragon. 'It wouldn't be very high or far so we'll have to get the head to face this way,' Hawke frowns.

'It's insane but it might just work,' she shrugged. It's not like they had anything better to try. 'Fenris, this way!' She called to the elf who hesistated for a moment but quickly made his way over to her. 'Right, when you're ready Garrett!' She said not looking at Fenris who wore confusion and panic on his face. Garrett nodded as he watched the dragon's head swing over to face them, it lowered it's body as it inhaled deeply, the warrior spun and when felt like his swing was at it's strongest he shouted.

'Jump!'

Amelie tried to keep her feet together as she jumped up, feeling the flat of his blade meet the soles of her boots. She bent her knees and felt the force of his swing flow through her as she was thrown at the head of the dragon. She was slightly to the left but it didn't matter as the dragon abandoned it's attempt to set them on fire and instead snapped at the woman that was metres from it's face. Amelie screamed as it caught her ankle in it's jaws. Ignoring all the noise from her companions she claws at it's eye, making it loosen it's grip on her leg. She feels it's teeth scrape down her calf removing skin. She had one arm draped over it's snout so that she could hold on and not dangle, her other hand she thrust into it's eyeball nails first. It was tough and rubbery but she felt it give way as she pushed harder. The dragon whipped it's head back and forth in agony as it tried to shake her loose. She sobbed in pain as she held on for dear life, summoning her mana her eyes began to glow as she poured electricity through it's destroyed eye socket and into it's mind. All Amelie could hear was the roar of the dragon as it began to convulse. Fire poured over her leg and foot as the dragon lost control of it's body. 'Fucking die!' Amelie screamed as she forced more and more of her mana to pour into it's brain. She felt a jolt around her hand as it's eyeballs rolled back in it's head and it started to fall to the side. Thankfully for Amelie it landed on the the side that she wasn't; it didn't stop a wave of pain coursing through her entire being as it crashed to the floor. She cried out as her leg twisted in it's limp jaws. Within moments of landing she felt a strong pair of hands under her arms as she saw Garrett run over and begin to pull open it's mouth. She bit down on her lip and stifled a scream as she felt it's teeth be torn away from her skin. Fenris lifted her gently from the beast and carried her over to where Varric was sitting up. Amelie panted heavily and shook as her body calmed down from the adrenaline, unfortunately that meant that the pain returned tenfold.

'Who's damn idea was that?!' Fenris demanded to know as he looked at Amelie's leg and ankle, how she wiped her eyes to stop herself from crying. Fenris turned to her and stroked her cheek, making her smile a little before he wiped a little that she had missed. He stood up and began to move over to the other warrior.

'Well it was a joint decision-' Garrett said apologetically, he felt awful about what had happened to her but he was also thankful that the dragon was now dead. Amelie leant back on her elbows as she gingerly moved towards Varric who was holding out the last health vial to her. '-At least it's dead, it's not gonna be hurtin' anyone now- Fenris, you need to calm down...shit!' Garrett said simply as he stepped back, the look on the elf's face was somehow more terrifying than the fight that they had just been in.

'Sparky... Broody is-' Varric said quickly as he pointed towards the pair.

'Leave him, he'll calm down in a moment,' she said breathlessly as she sniffs heavily and waves a hand in dismissal. She opened the vial and almost inhaled the contents, sucking in air between her teeth as her leg began to heal. 'The most he's gonna do is-' There was a cry of pain and the sound of skin hitting skin.

'SONOVABITCH!'

'-Punch him,' Amelie said without feeling. She kinda wanted to hit Hawke herself as she wasn't feeling any sympathy right now, she hurt too much. 'Fenris,' she called, hoping that that was the end of it. Within moments the elf had returned to her, a face of thunder and blood on his knuckles. 'Oh.. you didn't hurt him too much did you?' She asked the guilt dropping like a penny.

Fenris grunted and shrugged half a shoulder as he knelt next to her and began to examine her leg. 'God damn bastard of an elf!' Garrett swore loudly as he moaned in pain. Amelie had to put her hand over her mouth as she turned to look at Hawke. He was holding his nose and wandering around like a lost lamb.

'Oh Fenris,' she said reaching out to touch his shoulder.

'Do not!' He says sharply making her jump. He breathes in heavily and forces himself to look at her, 'I am not happy with you either,' he states but in a softer tone. Amelie nodded ashamed and swallowed the burning ball in her throat. He was right, she was reckless during that fight. 'You should not have put yourself in such danger, there were other ways,' he says quietly as he begins to peel back her ruined leggings around her calf and inspecting the wound on her thigh. He sat back and crossed his legs gently lifting her damaged leg into his lap. Amelie hissed and clenched her hands to brace herself.

'I think something is broken,' she murmurs.

Fenris nods and takes out a dagger. 'I am going to just remove the boot and some of your legging, about up to here,' he says motioning to her upper leg. Amelie nods and reaches out to grab his arm as he begins to remove her clothing. She swears heavily and holds onto him tightly, he doesn't say anything more and concentrates. Only when Amelie actually cries out does he pause for a moment and then tenderly touches her ankle again, trying to feel the break.

'Ow Andraste! Fenris! I told you it's broken! Maker!' She says thumping him lightly on the arm. She leans back onto to the floor and covers her eyes with her hands. 'Okay, okay,' she says breathing heavily, 'do what you're gonna,' she prepares herself.

'Not broken, dislocated and fractured, by the feel. Isabela's boots protected your foot rather well,' he said softly as he leant over and brushed her hair out her fingers. 'Come on, up,' he said pulling her to a sitting position. She moans in pain but allows herself to sit up. 'Hold on to me and bend your leg,' he instructs. 'I know it hurts but this is the easiest way,' Fenris says apologetically. Amelie inhales sharply and does as he asked, she's sitting in his lap, her arm over his shoulder. 'Breathe in deeply.'

Amelie closes her eyes and nods as she breathes in, only to scream out in agony. She falls back to be caught by Fenris. 'Fucking hell,' she whimpers as her leg begins to throb in tenderness. Fenris shushs her lightly and she buries her head into his shoulder as he holds her.

'I am sorry,' he says quietly.

'I know, I know, it's the only way. It needs to be done,' she mumbles. Fenris strokes her hair and kisses the side of her temple. 'I'm sorry too. I didn't think about what the repercussions were about what we did. I just wanted it to all end as fast as possible,' she said into his chest. 'Forgive me?' She said looking up at him. Fenris allowed her a half smile as he gently brushed aside a loose curl.

'I think you have been through enough pain,' he says simply. 'Lean back and I will bandage your wounds, then we can go back,' Fenris says as he takes some medicinal supplies from his belt. After a couple of minutes Garrett wandered over having grabbed a spare bit of cloth from around the place.

He held it to his nose and knelt next to the three of them. 'Well, I think you broke my nose, asshole,' he says to Fenris who simply looks at him with a raised brow. 'At least it's dead. Varric, you still breathing?' He asks and laughs a little painfully at the dwarf's thumbs up in reply. 'Okay, Amelie, you okay?' He inquires, still a little wary of the elf.

'Yeah, I'll be fine, eventually. Not gonna lie, I don't think I want to come out with you again,' she teases.

'I don't think I want you to either if this is how your boyfriend acts every time you get hurt,' Garrett says flicking a pebble at Fenris. Fenris scowled at him and went to retort but Varric got there first.

'You think... this is bad? Wait till... Catherine finds out,' he says slowly as he gets up to his feet. 'Boy, your ass will be … eaten by a dragon,' he laughs holding his ribs in support. Amelie had blushed at the mention of a boyfriend, she knew that that's technically what they were, she supposed, they hadn't really labelled it. Hadn't seen the need to. Garrett went pale in the face.

'Ach shite,' he sighed as he stood up. 'I'm gonna go... check the corpses and see if there's anything useful,' he mutters dreading the impending doom of what waited for him at home. Varric smiles at Amelie and Fenris and limps off to go help Hawke.

'Do you think you could stand?' Fenris asks as he slides out from under her.

'Honestly? No, but we'll give it a shot,' Amelie said shrugging a shoulder. Fenris had wrapped almost the entirety of her foot and leg up to the middle of her thigh. 'I'm gonna have some serious scars,' she sighs. 'Thank the maker this day has ended,' she rubs her eyes before giving her hands to Fenris and wincing as she stood up, placing all her weight on her good leg. Fenris helped her take a few steps but it became apparent that if they wanted to get back to the cart this century she would have to be carried. Garrett came over with a large bag full of collected valuables and crafting items, Varric had taken a few lighter things to carry. 'Are you sure you can carry me and your sword as well?' Amelie asks. Fenris looks over at the weapon that was against a boulder.

'Hmm, I am tempted to leave it,' he mused. 'It was of no use against that dragon's hide and it got damaged badly,' Fenris sighed. Garrett shook his head and picked it up, strapping it across his back with his other one.

'We can get it fixed,' Hawke says simply. 'Come on. The pub is calling.'

'A bath is calling,' Amelie corrects. 'I'm covered in dragon goop,' she smiles as Fenris picks her up easily. Varric laughs and slaps Fenris on the backside earning a shocked noise from the elf, he almost dropped the mage and gripped her tightly as he recovered.

'What was that for?' Fenris asked in surprise and in a higher tone than Amelie had ever heard. Garrett snorted in laughter and pain as Varric winked at the elf.

'Your hands are full and so I took the opportunity,' Varric chuckles as he walks ahead, Amelie trying to shove her hands in her mouth to stifle her giggles.

'I just heard that a bath was calling that's all,' the dwarf smirked. 'I don't think she's going to be able to do it all on her own,' he teases. 'She'll need help. I've heard how helpful you can be,' he continues.

Fenris looks at Amelie who shakes her head and holds up her hands in innocence, 'I've not said anything,' she says through her laughter. 'Nothing at all.'

Fenris clears his throat and flicks his hair out his eyes, 'is the dwarf too injured to be hit?' He asks grumpily as he follows the rest of them. Shifting Amelie's weight to a more comfortable position she wraps an arm around his shoulders and leans into him.

'Most definitely,' Amelie says giggling.
