Chapter 31

'My that's a sharp tongue you have there,' Danarius grins as if he finds her amusing. 'I wonder if it would be quite so quick if I was to tear it from those pretty lips?' It had begun to rain as Amelie's temper rose, he looks at the sky and then back at her. 'Well, well, well, you are powerful aren't you,' he says simply. 'I've changed my mind, little wolf. You can keep her as a pet. Her blood will be quite potent and no doubt any offspring you have would be strong.'

Fenris bared his teeth and his hands shook. 'You will not touch her,' he snarls his fingers itching for a blade. He could hear his friends coming down the dunes and sand tumbling as they made their way over to help him.

'You will be reminded as to whom your master is! Danarius scowls as he throws up a large shield and smashes a hefty vial of blood on the ground. Amelie could feel the power surge through the earth beneath her feet as the faded was torn open.

'Shades!' She warns as she gathers her mana in her hands. Her friends reach where they're standing and Hawke passes Fenris his blade, Varania screams and runs to the ship where slavers and men of the same ilk ran down the gangplank towards them. 'Remember what I told you,' Amelie shouted over the roar of the rain that swirled around the area. Her fear had made the storm she attracted surge and the wind buffeted and beat the ship and shore, sea spray turned the air salty as demons swarmed towards the group. Hawke growls as he mimics Fenris and dashes forward cutting a large swathe through the oncoming horde the two of them destroying enemies easily. Danarius roared an anger and his mana rose once again as he summoned more and more entities to do his bidding. Amelie threw a large cage around the slavers and slowly began to crush them without mercy, Isabela and Varric picking off the men that had tried to flank them. Amelie could hear nothing but the clash of blades, the unholy screaming from the demons that were vanquished and howls of agony of the slavers she had been torturing. There was a loud rumble from the clouds above and the tell tale prickle on her skin of a building thunderbolt, 'disperse!' She commanded to the others who looked at her hair as it began to rise from her shoulders. Fenris looked reluctant but they had already discussed what would happen, Danarius stared at her in curiosity, barely concerned that his men had been utterly decimated.

'Will you be alright?' Fenris shouts over the din of the wind as the others began to run and give her space the demons focusing on the closest target; Amelie.

She smiles softly at him as she holds her hands at waist height, palms upward, 'perfectly,' she says softly her eyes swirling into a deep black as the heart of the tempest found it's conductor. He bares his teeth at his master and then looks at the woman he had come to care for more than his own life.

He grabs her wrist ignoring the jolt of electricity that shot through his arm. 'Promise me,' he begs.

'Always,' Amelie replies nodding. Fenris nods and slowly lets her hand go as Hawke runs back over the sand and grabs the elf roughly by the upper arm and drags him away to give her berth. The shield she had thrown up as the creatures from the fade and living Magisters came close dissipated and within moments she was lost under a heaving pile of demonic bodies and spells. Fenris felt his heart clench as the sight of her disappeared. Sand began to whorl around the group and the static in the air became visible, they could hear Amelie scream loudly in either pain or power they weren't sure. Fenris had to be held back by Hawke, throwing his arm over his shoulder and across his chest as he held the man back. A deep boom echoed over the beach as the clouds burst, the strike of lightening pierced the mass of fiends and blew them away from Amelie, scattering and incinerating them across the shore. The closest humans had been totally obliterated from the blast as she funnelled the energy through her being and towards the man she despised, the bolt danced over the sand and struck Danarius' shield with a ear splitting crack that reverberated over them all.

When the smoke had cleared they could see Amelie half standing, her arms held in front of herself as she panted. Danarius had been thrown into the surf and was clearly injured, his attempt at subduing them all had failed, his men were dead and the portal to the fade disrupted. Amelie's plan to wipe out the brunt of his force had worked better than they expected, it meant that it was over quickly and they wouldn't have to worry about anyone getting hurt. Fenris pulled himself free from Hawke and pelted over the sand dropping his sword as he got close to his lover. 'Amelie!' He said urgently and went to grab her but she shook her head, her body still contained a high level of energy that she didn't want hurting him.

'No... Just.. go...' she breathed deeply trying to control it. He nodded and began to walk towards Danarius who had risen from the water, his fury clear in his face. Fenris clenched and unclenched his hands as he got closer and closer only for another shield to be thrown up in his face.

'Do you really think it would be that easy my little wolf?' Danarius sneered, water dripping from his clothing. 'I knew you might have some stupid last attempt to keep your freedom so I came prepared,' he hissed as he looks at the hill. Amelie turned to look with him and wondered what he meant, he clearly had expected something to happen and she could hear what Danarius had said but there was nothing. She cleared her throat and began to jog over to whatever he was looking for. When she was halfway across the shore a figure appeared on the hilltop, he was covered in blood and holding a sword and his side in an awkward way.

'Leto!' Amelie screamed in realisation before running towards him as he fell to the ground. He dropped his sword and began to slide down the dune, Hawke reached him before Amelie and pulled him half upright inspecting his wounds. She slid onto her knees and paused before she touched him not sure if she was still charged. 'What? What happened?' She asked in fear as she looked him over, there was blood everywhere and even a couple of crossbow bolts still lodged in his chest. 'Look at you,' she had begun to sob. 'What are you doing here?' Amelie looked at Garrett who shook his head, they hadn't brought a healer with them as Anders had been less than sane lately. Leto coughed and grabbed her hand smiling at her.

'I saw the slavers...' he murmurs weakly. 'I couldn't... let them … hurt you..' Leto says as blood began to drop from his nose. 'Fenris... he'll keep you safe and you can both be free... together.'

'No, no, you'll be okay. You will. We just have to take out the arrows and then... then you can start to heal. We have health potions,' she says shaking her head, the rain dripping through her curls as she stared at him in terror that he might actually not come back from this. 'Garrett get the draughts!' She snaps at him making him jump, he knew it was fruitless as the man had lost too much blood but he did as she asked and went to go get them.

'Ami,' Leto said softly as he shook his head, the rain had washed the streaks of red from his face into his hair. 'It's okay,' he says quietly before groaning in pain. She shook her head in defiance and pulled him onto her lap.

'No, no it's not. It's not, you'll be fine, I promise, I promise,' she kisses his forehead and then summons what was left of her mana attempting to somehow manipulated it into healing. All that happened was a few sparks that flickered and died around her fingers. 'No! No! Come on!' Amelie sobbed, her voice catching in her throat. She looked over to Fenris who was standing stunned by the scene and unable to get to his master because of the shield, Hawke returned with a health draught and Amelie tore of the wax seal and forced some between Leto's lips. 'Just d-drink, you'll be fine,' she says simply, repeating herself in a hope that it would work.

'I have always loved you, Amelie,' Leto said softly as he lifted his hand to brush away her wet hair.

'You didn't have to do this,' she wept as she leaned into his hand, feeling her tears drip onto his shaking hand. She grabbed his other hand and cradled his head on her lap. 'Not for me,' she said feeling her heart shatter. 'It was never supposed to be for me,' she whispered.

He chuckles as she kisses the inside of his palm, 'it was always going to be for you,' he replied weakly. 'Only you,' he murmured before his eyes closed and his hand dropped from her face. Amelie froze in horror as she felt his breath leave his body.

'Leto?' She whispered. 'Leto!' Isabela had covered her mouth with her hand and Varric bowed his head. They could only watch as Amelie screamed into the torrential rain and wind, the sound of her broken voice tearing into their very souls. Hawke gently pulled her aside and without asking picked Leto up, he was sure that whatever happened next his friends would be fine. Fenris breathed in deeply and turned to face his demon the rage inside him was palatable, Danarius' backup plan had been taken care of and they had lost a friend because of it. Amelie had gotten up and started to walk towards them, the clouds above her had regrouped and darkened once more, her eyes black with heartbreak. Every step she took a bolt of lightening struck the ground beside her, her mana becoming visible as it whirled around her. 'You took him from me!' She screamed at Danarius, 'you will take no more! No more! You took my Leto!' She sobbed as more and more bolts hit the sand creating beautiful glass structures that shattered as soon as she came near. 'You will pay for taking him from me!' Fenris didn't even try to stop her as she walked up to the shield and placed her hand against it crushing the protection around the mage like a leaf. 'I hate you! I hate you, I hate you, I hate you! You have no idea! No idea what you've done!' She spits venom at the old man who had begun to cower under her onslaught of mana and presence. 'Everything you touch you hurt and now you've taken one of the people I love with your selfishness!' Amelie created a cage around him and began to slowly contract it making it crush him painfully. Her breathing and tears were hard and heavy and only when she felt Fenris take her hand did she jump and realise what she was doing. This wasn't her place, this wasn't her demon to vanquish. She released her cage and there was a dying man curled up in the sand, turning on her foot she left him. She didn't want to know what Fenris did to him. It didn't matter. He had already done the worst he could do to her.

'Amelie,' Isabela tried to talk to her as she walked past.

'Where is he?' She asked bluntly.

'Hawke took him to the camp, Varric is making sure that the slavers are dea-'

'I'll be at the camp,' she cut the Pirate off simply and felt more tears well up. 'Please, bring the horses,' she mumbles. 'Leave Fenris... he'll find me,' Amelie said wiping her eyes. Isabela nodded and patted her shoulder before walking down to where a couple of spooked horses had been tethered. Amelie walked without thinking and soon found herself in the camp that the others had set up. Hawke was waiting outside a tent and opened the flap for Amelie to go inside. She felt a lump in her throat as she saw him, Garrett had done his best and cleaned the blood from his skin and removed the bolts but it wasn't enough. To see him so still and without life broke Amelie in a way that she never knew possible. She fell to her knees and wept, huge shuddering sobs that tore through her body with every breath. She moved to the bedroll he'd been placed on and half rested on his chest as she held him close wishing and praying that he would open his eyes. 'You weren't supposed to die for me,' she sobbed pounding her fist against his clothes. 'Never for me...' she cried until tears came no more, the rain falling heavily against the canvas of the tent. After a while she sat up wiping her eyes, she had lost friends and even siblings but this one was the hardest, she pulled her knees up to her chest and leaned her head on her arms as she curled up. Her entire body hurt from the storm but the tightening and ache in her chest, the burning in her throat was all due to her loss.

Varric entered the tent and passed her a mug of tea, 'come on, I'll watch him for a while,' he said kindly. 'I know it hurts but there's someone else who could use your company right now,' the dwarf strokes her hair gently. She looks up at him and takes the tea.

'He's back already?' She murmurs.

'Waiting for you in the other tent. Go to him, mourn, help each other heal and Hawke and I will watch over him tonight,' he assures. Amelie can't help but feel tears drop down her face as she nods. She doubt anyone would get any sleep tonight, they'd all be watching over him.

'A pyre,' she says quietly as she stands. 'We need to build a pyre.'

'We will,' Varric says firmly. 'Go on,' he nods as he opens the tent, the rain had let up a bit and Amelie couldn't see anyone in camp, she spotted Isabela and Garrett in the far tent, simply sitting on their bedrolls by the look of it. She walked past the smouldering fire to the other tent, she opened the flap and found Fenris sitting on the edge of a make-do chair. He stood as she entered and it surprised her to find that he had looked like he had cried.

'Fenris...' she said through a sob.

'I know,' he murmurs.

'He's actually gone,' she begins to shake dropping her tea as she covers her mouth to try and stop her crying. Fenris doesn't say any more and simply closes the distance in one stride pulling her into his embrace, she broke into him as he held her tightly. His demon was rotting on the sea floor and he should have felt happy but the only thing that sat in his heart this night was grief.

So yeah. I apologise for any spelling or grammar mistakes, I haven't looked over this chapter to proofread it as i didn't want to write it, let alone read it several times.

That happened.

I'm not the great at writing these scenes so please let me know what you think.
