AN: I wrote this a few years ago when the thought of "what if" came into my mind. What if Sonic held a secret darkness within himself that none of his friends knew of...?
This was also something of an exercise in writing second-person POV.
Self-destruction is such a pretty little thing.
"RUSTING OVER"
Of all people, this had to become of you.
Look at you now. All through the years, you've kept on smiling, kept on that phony, happy face. Recently, however, you've begun to slip. The pressure has finally started to take a toll on you. At last, you have realized that any amount of happiness is only temporary, and that there is no escape from your life. There's no way out but death.
Years of constantly being told what to do and what to say have caused mountains and mountains of stress to build up inside of you. The career that you chose all those years ago will never be what you thought it would be. Everyone expects so much of you. Everyone is always watching.
A swirling storm of blackness has started to move in over your head. Buckets and buckets of acid rain in the form of words pour over you, drowning you in sorrow and pushing you deep down into depression. Silently, you scream from your golden pedestal for the world to leave you alone. All you want is to live in peace and quiet, as a normal citizen. Fame is a monster that has swallowed you whole.
You could hurt yourself like the weaker ones do; but you won't even attempt it. Although you desire a permanent escape from your reality, you still hold too much respect for yourself to ever take a blade to your arms or your legs. You're not that far gone yet. Instead of giving in to such a mental weakness, you block out the world and occasionally let the thought of suicide drift into your mind. The world will never take their eyes off of you as long as you're still living. Once you die, they'll all gradually forget, won't they? You won't have to deal with them anymore when you're dead. You won't have to worry about keeping up your carefully constructed image or focus on not letting a certain word tumble from your lips. You'll never have to think of marrying a suitable woman, or having children, or what everybody would think. In fact, you won't have to worry about the future at all! Nothing will matter if you die, right?
Oh, Sonic, if only you were strong enough to actually end your life.
-End-
AN^2: Now I'm depressed.
