AN: I submitted this piece as part of my final portfolio for a creative writing class in my third semester of college. I wrote it when I was about a month shy of turning 18.

"Your Dream, My Future"

Holding hands on that last night,

We gazed into the infinite possibilities

Of our future together.

Standing side by side, we envisioned

A world in which our harmonious existence was unbreakable.

Together, we created an illusory paradise,

A swirl of color just beyond our reach.

Our dream was still newly born when

The warmth of your hand vanished suddenly

And I locked myself inside the realm of our creation

Blocking out the sound of the gunshots

Telling myself that the blood raining down

Was just that – rain –

I closed my eyes and felt those final words,

Sensing that our era had come to an end.

Unable to deal with my sorrow,

I deluded myself with images that I could not touch,

Discarding reality in favor of your smiling face.

Surely we're still standing together

At the brink of an uncertain future,

Preparing to run away into the world where

The dreams of today are the untouchable inevitable

And the dreams of yesterday

Are undeniable truths
