AN: I won't take any more of this running away.

"The Great Divide"

For as long as I can remember, things have been this way. When a situation emerges that is simply too difficult for him to face, he runs away. Over bridges, through valleys, and into forests he goes – anything to get way from the ugly truth. On any other day, I wouldn't dispute it; for that is just who Sonic is. On any other day, I would walk away, sinking into my own solitude.

I won't be doing that today, however.

He runs away, and I chase after him. The flowers bend to our will, and the trees shake their leaves down upon us. The birds sing and chirp eagerly as if to encourage me in my pursuit. Bitter wind strikes me suddenly, sending into my nose warm notes of cinnamon and the sweetness of freshly cut grass. Hesitation creeps into my mind, an unwelcome addition to my curiosity. I shake it from my quills along with the dirt that he left behind.

When he stops, so do I. Much to my surprise, he turns to face me, grinning as if he's just won first prize in a contest.

"You finally decided to come after me, huh?"

"Why not, I figured."

"I'm glad you did." He moves towards me, but I do not step back as I normally would. "You know–" His blue-quilled head lowers in an uncharacteristic display of shyness. " –this whole time, I was hoping you would."

I offer him my long-hidden smile, as nothing more can be said.
