AN: Hi All!
Thanks to all who read, review, follow, and fave! Humongous thanks to, catgrl, for reviewing last chapter!
And now, the event you've all been waiting for!
But before you start picturing K-Stew, stahp! This version of Bella (being Sarah's biological daughter, not Renée's) has a very different look than canon Bella. So before you even meet her, I want you to go to Google or your prefered search engine and type in: Madison Cheeatow.
She plays Jade Virani on Heartland, which, if you've ever seen that, you would know she's just cheeky and ballsy enough to pull off what I am envisioning for Bella Blackswan. And she also looks great in a cowboy hat ;-*
Anyway, here comes Chapter 14!
Chapter Fourteen: More Babies and More Friends
In the three months since Suzie's harrowing brush with death, we had been so invested in helping Harry's family through their challenges that we'd hardly taken time to prepare for our own impending arrivals. Baby Seth had spent six weeks in hospital after being born at 33 weeks gestation. Sue had been recuperating from her hysterectomy for much of that time as well.
We had been helping them out by watching LeeLee and taking Harry's patrol shifts and bringing them meals and really anything we could do for them. We'd been keeping pretty busy between helping the Clearwaters and attending to our regular duties as well.
Of course, we'd taken the time off in August to have a party for the twins' first birthday. Yep, our girls were already a year old, if you can believe it.
RaeRae was our talker, babbling words almost constantly. "Cat" was her favorite and she would say it whenever she saw us in wolf form. We tried hard not to get our fur in a twist about it.
Becks was our walker, already toddling around after LeeLee and Sam, though she wasn't nearly as solid on her feet as they were and tended to fall down a lot.
Willie was only ten months, but he had taken his first steps and said his first words and was trying hard to catch up to his cousins and sisters. And there would be new siblings trailing behind them all soon, as well as a new cousin coming up in the new year. Just after Easter this year, we attended Jennie's wedding to Carl Weber. Their honeymoon baby, Angela, was due in January.
If I was being honest, it was easier to focus on what our extended family and friends had going on than what was actually going on at home.
It was the beginning of September and Sarah was due any day. After watching her go through labor once before with the twins, and after what Sue had recently gone through having Seth...needless to say, my wolf was terrified. If I could, I'd give birth in her place but sadly, the science wasn't there yet for that. Maybe one day that would be an option.
"Is the overnight bag ready, Charlie?" Sarah asked me, as I stood, washing the lunch dishes.
"Yep, I finished packing it last night." I smiled. "We'll be all set for when you go into labor, don't worry, Babe."
"Good. Thank you, Charlie. Can you please take it and put it in the car now? I think it's time." She winced.
"You mean...it's time? As in...you're in labor now?" I frowned.
"Yes, Charlie. Please don't panic. My water broke a few minutes ago, so we should head to the clinic."
"But it's early, right? You're not due for another five days!" I worried, washing my hands and grabbing the bag.
"Isabella is still considered a full-term baby, Charlie. It won't be like it was for Sue. I promise," she assured me softly.
"Yeah, I...I guess you're probably right." I nodded.
"I'm going to leave a note on the door for Billy and Renée. When they get home from the grocery store, they will see it and come to the clinic and meet us, okay?" Sarah offered.
"Sure, sure, I'll take the bag to the car. Do we need to phone the clinic?" I confirmed.
"Already done. Just the bag, please, Charlie. Oh, and my purse if you don't mind," she requested.
"You got it. I'll be back to help you out to the car in a minute." I nodded, gathering up her things.
Several hours later, Renée and Billy eventually made it to the clinic and joined us in the labor room. "There you are, finally! What took so long?" I frowned, sponging Sarah's forehead as she whoowhooheehee'd her way through another contraction.
"Sorry! We stopped for burgers on our way home from the store and then once we got home we had to get a sitter." Renée apologized.
"It's okay, Hunny, I'm just glad you're both here now." Sarah smiled reassuringly. Ever considerate, even during labor pangs.
"What can we do?" Billy asked me.
"I haven't had a chance to put music on yet if you want to do that," I suggested.
"Sure, sure, Country or Rock?" he asked Sarah.
"This one feels like a little badass. Let's go with Rock." Sarah grinned.
"Okay, Rock it is." Billy nodded looking through the tapes. "Slippery When Wet?" he offered, holding up Bon Jovi.
"Sure, that's a great album in spite of the title." Sarah laughed but it ended abruptly as another contraction hit her.
Renée rubbed her shoulders and I held her hands and slowly but surely, one contraction at a time, we got her through it, with a little help from Bon Jovi.
In the wee hours of the morning, a little girl emerged. Isabella Helen Blackthorn was born weighing 8lbs 8oz and both mother and daughter were doing fine.
"You did it, Sarah. And look at her! She's so beautiful." Renée beamed.
"We did it. I couldn't have done it without you three," Sarah corrected.
"Well, you'll be returning the favor in a few months." Renée smiled.
"I know. I can't wait." Sarah beamed.
"This Christmas is gonna be so much fun!" Renée grinned as we stood in the tree lot, picking out a big fur tree for the living room.
A little over a month after our Bella was born, we had Willie's first birthday party. It was much less stressful than the party for the twins had been because Sue and Seth were both out of the woods and everything was pretty much back to normal. Or at least, as normal as can be for a pack of wolves and their families.
And after that was Halloween and all the kids got to go trick-or-treating for the first time. Well, except for Baby Bella, but we dressed her up anyway in a cute little pumpkin suit.
RaeRae went as a mermaid and Becks was a unicorn. Willie went as a fireman. Baby Seth was too little for treats but they dressed him up as a bumblebee. LeeLee and Sam had on matching doctor and nurse costumes they had picked out themselves. Those two were still inseparable, even though Sam's family had moved to town over the summer. Allison's father had passed away and he'd left her his house in Forks.
It was much bigger than the house they were renting in La Push and it was right down the street from the parsonage where Jennie and Carl were living. He'd graduated in the spring and received his first appointment at a church in town. Connie was still living in the house she and Jennie had purchased and it was only a few blocks away from them too. I was glad that Emmie would be living nearby to the twins. If she couldn't stay close to us, that was the next best thing.
Another piece of news from their camp...shortly after they had moved to town, Lucas Uley moved in with them too. At first, we thought he was just trying to save money and be closer to his brother, but then we got an invitation in the mail. Joshua and Lucas would officially be marrying Emmie and Allison by tribal law in the spring. We were super happy for them since we'd spent enough time with them by then that we no longer felt we had cause to worry about Joshua's character. He seemed like a decent guy and by all accounts, Lucas was much the same.
We had also decided to invite all of our sisters' families for Christmas dinner. Even Nora and Malcolm were going to fly in. Of course, we made sure our girls were okay with hosting before we extended the invite, but they were thrilled. Altogether, we would have sixteen adults and six children, counting all of our household.
The girls spent several days leading up to Christmas doing as much prep work ahead of time as possible so that things would run smoothly on the actual day. And everyone had asked to contribute something which would surely help out.
The Webers were bringing buns and a tossed salad. The Uleys were bringing corn on the cob and candied yams. The Cumberlands were bringing the wine and providing a variety of pies. And the Clearwaters were bringing beer (for those of us with a less refined palate) as well as a green bean casserole. Really, that meant all Sarah and Renée would have to do was cook the turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes and make the gravy and cranberries.
The girls were very excited about getting to use our formal dining room since we had yet to do so. I was a little concerned about having so many people in such close proximity, especially when three of us had the habit of bursting into giant furry creatures whenever tensions ran high. At least we were all fairly even-keeled when it came to temperament, which should help. Even still, I had asked the girls to help steer the conversation away from any controversial topics should they arise.
Christmas morning came and went with all of the kids being very excited by their presents which was much different than the year before. I fully expected to receive a letter from Fisher-Price, personally thanking us for our business, after how many toys we got them. We hadn't meant to go so far overboard, but it was the first time we could really spoil them that they were old enough to appreciate it.
Thankfully, the morning's excitement had tired them out so much that they slept through the afternoon while Sarah and Renée worked on preparing dinner. We had tried to suggest to Renée that she didn't need to help since she was due any day. But she had argued that Sarah hadn't rested on her laurels at the twins' birthday party even though she was almost due to have Bella. And she promised to take lots of breaks whenever she needed to.
In the end, I was glad she had been willing to help because Nora and Malcolm's flight ended up being early. They were supposed to get in at 2:15pm but they ended up getting in at 12:30pm, so by the time they arrived from PA, it was a little after 2:00pm, so Billy and I couldn't really help the girls, even if we'd wanted to because someone had to entertain them.
Nora talked about their flight and their rental car and the drive over. Malcolm talked about his business and investments and how hectic work had been leading up to the holidays as well as his projections for the new year. I had to fight to stay awake because I didn't find that stuff very interesting and Billy seemed to be in the same boat. We kept plying him with beers hoping he'd get more interesting but he never did.
I was actually pretty relieved they'd insisted on staying at a hotel while they were in Washington because if I'd had to listen to him talk about the Dow Jones for another day, I might have gouged my eyes out. As it stood, I only had to make it through the evening. It got a lot easier once our other guests started arriving. I was really grateful to Jennie and Carl for coming early because it turned out that Malcolm was a religious man, so when he heard Carl was a minister, he switched from stocks to apostles which was comparatively less boring.
Billy and I left them to entertain each other when the Uleys showed up. I knew Josh and Lucas would want to talk sports which was much more to our liking. So we took them downstairs to look at our new television set that the girls had bought us for Christmas and we got it all set up while we waited for dinner to be ready.
And boy was it worth the wait! Dinner was absolutely delicious. Our girls certainly outdid themselves yet again. The only thing that wasn't as tasty as the rest was Emms' candied yams. Not sure why Allison let her make the more complicated of the two dishes they brought because Emmie is a terrible cook and always has been. But hey, maybe Allison was even worse. After all, the corn did seem a little rubbery and corn was pretty hard to screw up. If that was the case, I certainly felt bad for little Sammie having to eat their food all the time, poor thing.
Nora's pies were made by a bakery, which she never openly admitted to, but I'd seen the boxes they'd arrived in before the girls managed to hide them, so I knew her secret. Nora couldn't cook any better than Emms. The twins had inherited all of the kitchen talents in our family. Billy and I couldn't really cook either. Although we were both pretty good at cooking outdoors on a barbecue or open fire so at least that was something.
Anyway, the pies were delicious even if they were store-bought. And knowing Nora, they probably cost a fortune. It was a nice, fancy way to cap off a good evening.
By the time all our guests left, it was quite late. We'd arranged to have the Clearwaters stay over because we knew we wouldn't get as much time to spend with them as we would have liked with all our other guests here. So we'd planned to do our gift exchange with them in the morning.
Suzie and June helped our girls with clean-up and Billy and Harry watched television while I took the garbage out. I teased them about not helping, but they just shrugged and patted their bellies and complained that the girls had fed them too well. "Sure, sure. Nice excuse." I laughed. "You know, I ate the same amount you two did and I'm helping."
Just then, Sue came in from the kitchen. "I hope at least one of you isn't too stuffed or too drunk to drive...Renée is in labor."
Oh shit! There goes our leisurely morning!
"Yeah, I'm fine, I can drive, let's go!" I grinned happily.
"I'll stay with the kids," Harry offered as the rest of us piled into the station wagon to head to the clinic.
"One more push, Baby Girl, you can do it," Billy encouraged, mopping her forehead as our son was born in the bright hours of the late afternoon.
George Charles was just as beautiful as his siblings before him. Named for both Renée's father, George, and our father, Geoffrey, and maybe a bit for lil' old me. It was hard to say who he looked like because he mostly just looked like Renée. Just as with Bella, we didn't bother to find out whose biological child he was. We could have done a paternity test, but it didn't matter. We were both their fathers anyway.
"You did great, Kiddo, we're proud of you." I beamed, kissing Renée's forehead.
"You can thank Bryan Adams, I couldn't have done this without him," she teased.
"Oh shit, it isn't his baby, is it?" Billy snickered.
"No, but hey, if a famous musician did come here and wanted to knock me up, I might not say no!" She giggled.
Billy and I both growled quietly. "You better watch it, Woman, if you ever want sex again!" Billy huffed.
"She just had a baby, Billy. I'm sure sex is the very last thing she's thinking about right now." Sarah laughed, punching his shoulder lightly.
"Oh. Yeah, you're probably right, there."
Soon enough, we were able to take Renée and George Charles home. And the rest of the kids were very excited to find they had a new little brother. Willie was thrilled he wasn't the only boy anymore and the twins said that George Charles would be a friend for Baby Bella.
And about a month after his birth, our kids ended up getting another cousin, when Baby Angela was born. Jennie and Carl were elated. She was their first baby and poor Jennie phoned often to ask our girls for all kinds of advice, since we had, as she called it, "A whole brood."
But she was happy to have our advice, and really, she wasn't wrong. We were shaping up to have a pretty large family, but it was what we wanted, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Keep those kids coming, that's what I'd say about it. As many as God saw fit to give us.
AN: Okay so as I said, Bella: Madison Cheeatow
And also George Charles: Blair Redford
As always, I love to hear your feedback!
