Chapter 7
Terra had locked the door and drawn the curtains. She quickly changed out of her school uniform and slipped into a pair of yellow shorts and a black titans shirt. She looked on the dresser and found a pair of brown gloves witch she grabbed and put them on her hands. It was then that she noticed she was shaking. The feeling of the outfit was more than she anticipated. It felt like freedom, but also felt like guilt. Walking over to the mirror she practically burst into tears at the sight. She remembered how it felt the first time she wore this. It was the first time in a long time that she had felt wanted and belonging, but now it was just a memory of what she had done... something she wished she could forget again. There was a knock on the door which startled her. "Um, just a second!" She noticed a bathroom hanging on the hook of the closet door and she practically tumbled towards it. "Coming!"
Beast Boy stood at the door practically sweating with anxiety. When it opened and he saw Terra standing there in the robe he tensed. "Terra!" His voice cracked.
"What's up?" She asked pleasantly. Her smile was different.
"You ok? You seem a little less... stressed than earlier."
"Oh right! About that. Sorry I snapped at you. That was rude."
"Um... it's ok. I mean thank you." Beast Boy hung his head and rubbed his neck. "So there is this call and we think it's for you."
"But nobody knows I'm here."
"It's just a hunch. Might be nothing. Maybe I should leave you alone."
Terra looked at the little green teen and felt guilty for the self-doubt and embarrassment she had forced on him. As Beast Boy turned to go she grabbed his arm. "No, it's ok. Let's check it out." She said and closed the door behind her.
Beast Boy perked up instantly and walked up the hall with her. Terra was acting more like her old... old self.
Robin kept to the shadows as he made his way to the address Terra had given him for her foster home. "Time to get to the bottom of things," he muttered as he stepped into the light of the street-lamps which were just starting to come on to greet the night. He made eye contact with the home and advanced to the door, but the stillness of it gave him pause. There were no lights on inside. Not one car in the driveway. "Must not be home," he muttered but then recalled Terra calling this house not too long ago to speak to her foster parents about spending the night at Titans Tower. Robin rang the doorbell but there was no answer. He knocked but no response came. He jiggled the doorknob and the front door opened with ease. "Hello?" Robin stepped inside the dark house and instantly noticed the furniture was all covered but there were no pictures on the wall, no personal items, no sign of life anywhere. How could this be where Terra had lived so recently. Robin turned to search more rooms but was stopped when he heard a very soft "Hello?" come from the room.
"Who is there?" He turned ready to defend himself but the room was still. There was no sign of anyone else. "Hello?" The voice came again, only this time Robin saw it. It was a phone, sitting off the hook, and someone was on the other end of the call. Robin walked carefully towards it and lifted the receiver. "Hello?" the voice said, only this time Robin recognized the voice. He paused for a moment before responding, "Terra?"
No sooner had he said her name, than a swift fist met his jaw. The blow came out of nowhere and completely knocked him to the floor, leaving the phone hanging by its chord on the table. Robin backflipped back to his feet and stood ready to fight, but the silhouette of the person fighting him made his jaw drop.
"Hello Robin. Happy to see me?" It was Slade's voice.
The Teen Titans all starred with bated breath at Terra. She had said "Hello," over and over into the phone but finally stopped.
"Well?" Cyborg asked. "Is someone there?"
"Y-yes," she said nervously, knowing she had heard Robin. "But they haven't really said anything." She kept the phone pressed to her ear as she heard Slade's voice come out of the void followed by Robin shouting, "How?!" But when Slade's maniacal laughter was the response, she heard Robin's battlecry followed by grunts and metallic punches. Based on what she heard, Robin was fighting and loosing badly. "Hello?" She shouted desperately trying to spare him. Hadn't she done enough to the Titan's already. "Hello, someone pick up!"
The fighting stopped after she heard a loud blow followed by footsteps and the phone was picked up by someone. She stiffened as she heard Slade's voice "I gave you the chance to be free, Terra. You should have taken it. No matter who you think you are, you can't escape what is destiny. The more you fight it, the more people will get hurt I promise you. Look around. You're at Titan's Tower with those other little pests. Look at the people you once called friends. Do you really think they will save you? Do you think they care what happens to you? The only person who cares about you is me, Terra. Regardless of what you remember, you know how to find me. Your destiny is mine... and it would benefit everyone if you remembered that." She heard the sound of a metal boot issue a kick which caused a painful grunt from Robin. "Everyone," he repeated and then hung up the phone.
Hi still here. lol. Sorry it's been over a year since I actually wrote anything! Finally time to keep going! Let's see what happens to Terra now that she remembers who she is!
