Sayu sighed as she lifted her cellphone to her ear once again from the backseat of an upscale sedan. "Misa. I told you, I will be back in a week. My mother has the baby. Just take this week to rest and relax. I'm going to check this guy out, see if he's any good, and if we're lucky, we'll sign our first Englishman." Sayu let out a hearty laugh while avoiding the driver's steely gaze as she glanced out the window to see the scenery turn to countryside. "So, promise me? Eat take out, watch movies, this weekend is for you mama. Love you too. Bye." She ended the call and tucked her phone into her bag.
The car pulled up to a menacing manor. The iron gates creaked loudly from lack of use as they pulled open as the black sedan slowly rolled into an overgrowth of a once beautiful garden. Vines and moss covered the fountain in the center of the turnaround; the water long since stopped running. A maid exited the front door and waited patiently for the vehicle to come to a stop. The driver tilted the rear view mirror to view the passenger. "You'll need to turn your phone off. No photographs, incoming or out going calls and certainly no text messages."
Sayu quickly powered her phone off as she exited the car and stared in awe of the stone mansion that confronted her. Gothic in architecture, vines and moss had begun crawling up the building, rust stains wept from the corners of the windows. Her golden eyes quickly landed on the heavy set maid who smiled from behind chocolate curls.
The maid curtsied quickly, her curly brunette hair shined in the light, peppered with silver hair. A think Irish accent greeted Sayu. "Welcome to the Wammy House."
Sayu tucked her chin slightly in skepticism. "And… this is where L lives?" Her eyes departed the maid and wandered to the abandoned playscape that has long been rusted and broken.
"Why, of course, Miss Yagami. Him and his brothers. Like it or not." The maid smiled matronly. "I am Anne. Caretaker to the terrible three." She laughed wholeheartedly. "But, I mainly look after Marshall, the second eldest. Come in. You'll catch cold in that light jacket. English spring isn't anything to snuff at. They'll be the death of you. Come, come." She pushed open one of the duel mahogany doors. "I suspect you've come all this way to see Lawrence. I'll fetch him."
Sayu glanced around the large entranceway, deep blue walls cascaded throughout the home, deep red wood floors followed. "Yes. I did. But I'm also quite curious about… Marshall? I've come a long way. If possible, I'd like to meet with both of them."
Anne seemed to freeze at the request while glancing over her shoulder. "What business would you be havin' with Marshall?"
Quickly realizing the growing tension, Sayu flitted her eyes down. "I… I need to see him. The reasons are personal. But, nothing bad."
Humming suspiciously before leading Sayu to a nearing room. "I'll see if he'll be taking any visitors. It's unlikely, poor babe has been… distant… since returning home." Sayu nodded and sat herself on the red velvet love seat. The window mostly covered by overgrown shrubbery and vines, concealing most of the natural light.
Golden irises drifted throughout the seating room. Walls line with books on shelves that seemingly haven't been dusted in years. The walls framed with photos of a family. Standing herself up she wandered towards one photo. The manor stood clean and tall, the fountain trickled water, the gardens clean and manicured. A man in a suit had one arm around the waist of a woman with a brilliant smile. Two boys stood in front of them. Both young with ravened hair. A small baby in the woman's arms.
Sayu's ears perked slightly when she heard a guitar playing and a smooth male's voice singing. "I miss the years that were erased. I miss the way the sunshine would light up your face. I miss all the little things. I never thought that they'd mean everything to me. Yeah, I miss you. And, I wish you were here."
She followed the singing down the hall and stopped in the doorway. To see the man who had been singing, who had stopped to continue writing in a notebook before picking the guitar up and beginning to strum again. A voice called to her from down the hall. "Sayu."
Her eyes departed the musician for a moment to see the sight she both dreaded and delighted in. An oddly haunched man, barefooted, with a head of messy onyx tresses, baggy clothing. Glancing her eyes back to where the man had once been sitting, her eyes widened at his disappearance. She pointed into the room with an inquisitive expression. "Who was that? He was amazing! You've got to give me his contact details. I could make that boy a star!" She hurried over to the detective. "How have you been? I'd hug you, except, you hate hugs. I remember that much." The brunette smiled and chuckled nervously while rubbing her bicep.
Keeping a serious stare L sighed. "I can't give you the contact to him. He's under house arrest. However, you're appearance here did take me a little by surprise. I figured you had more sense than that. And where is… you-know-who?"
Sayu smirked knowingly and spoke a little louder. "Who? Misa? She has no clue where I am. I can't make a fully fair judgement until I've met this… B. It's hardly fair for me to decide her fate, and it's even less fair to lie to her… L… If I'm wasting my time here, let me know now. I'm a very busy woman."
The obsidian haired man turned on his heel and started down the hall. "Oh, I know. A music studio, on top of managing a super star. Not only that, but maintaining her social obligations. That's far more effort than I would have ever given. Did you bring it?"
The young woman nodded. "Yes." She reached into her bag and pulled a large envelope out. A little odd that you wanted a DNA mapping of her baby. May I ask as to why?"
Turning the corner and entering a large darkened office space. More bookshelves lined the walls. A large panel of numerous televisions sat across from a grand oak desk. "I needed proof."
An elderly man in a fitted suit took the envelop from Sayu and opened it. Holding the provided strip up to another strip of lines underneath a lit surface. "It's a match. This is indeed the offspring. Even down to the genetic mutation."
Blinking rapidly before furrowing her brow in frustration. "L! Did you just use me as an expensive mail carrying service?!"
Charcoal eyes met the angry woman. "Of course not. However, I needed proof that she is of the Lawliet line. To my dismay, she is. And now, its become my responsibility to ensure her safety. I will need you to bring me Misa's child."
"No." Sayu's voice was laced with frustration. "Not until you fill me in. If you choose not to, I have no obligation, neither legally or willingly."
Crouching in his large black leather chair, the detective sighed. "Very well. If that is the case, then you're welcomed to stay before your departure date, however, we have nothing further to discuss."
Huffing in frustration before lashing out venomously. "Then I guess we don't. But, I bet guitar man down the hall would like an update on his kid. You think me a fool, still a child! But, he's the only likely candidate for her father. Your maid told me only you three live here. Meaning, only you, B and your other brother. The other brother, I can only imagine to be Near, the detective who solved the Kira case, you'd only ever trust your family to solve that kind of case. So, given the child shares a genetic mutation with one of you three twits! I'm going out on a limb and guessing it isn't albinism. And, no one in their right fracking mind would ever breed with you! So, that leaves just one last brother. Marshall, aka, B, aliased as Beyond Birthday. And, Lula has such beautiful scarlet eyes. Doesn't she? So. You can talk to me like a grown up, or I can pick both Misa and Lula up and disappear until you can track us down again. But even the great L has his weaknesses… doesn't he? Tell me, when was the last time you were able to surveillance the United States, or Russia, or…"
Interrupting the irate female, L interjected. "You've made your point. The entire Yagami family is very adept in the art of deduction." Running his thumb over his bottom lip while hugging his knees. "Indeed, Marshall Lawliet is its father."
"Her."
L tightened his grip around his knees. "Her father. And, in being her father, she is singly the first heir to the Lawliet household."
"She doesn't need your money or your house. She needs her father. And if that bastard won't come see her I will deliver that news myself!"
The bitter scent of a lit cigarette filled the room as a shadow loomed in the doorway. Sayu turned to see a man, nearly identical to L. Brilliant scarlet eyes narrowed with anger. The detective sighed "Marshall, I've told you not to smoke in the house."
A venomous response came from the opposing raven. "And I told you to keep me informed. Looks like we're both liars." The former murderer's nostrils flared, exhaling a large cloud of smoke from his nose. "Care to enlighten me as well?" He flicked his end of his cigarette, ashing directly onto the carpet.
Sayu stared wide eyed at the enigmatic presence in the doorway. Only silence came from L. "You? You're B?"
Ruby eyes landed on the brunette before sizing her up. "Charmed, I'm sure." His fiery gaze landed back onto the detective. "Not going to introduce us?" He slowly clapped his hands together. "Well done, such hospitality." The raven bounced his shoulder off the doorframe and entered the room.
Sayu quickly flitted her eyes away from the hostile embers and bowed. "I am Sayu –"
"Yagami. Daughter of former Deputy Chief of the NPA, music producer and collaborator…" Beyond's voice trailed before glancing to her. "Sister to Light Yagami, aliased as Kira. 5'11" in American height, shoe size 10, 8 in European size, approximately 120 pounds, died at the age of 24." His eyes flicked back to the detective. "Or did he? Nathaniel couldn't even recover a body. Needless to say, Sayu Yagami. There isn't anything about you that I don't know."
Roger rang a bell. "Anne, your charge has intruded."
Sayu stared at the lanky man in horror. "It was you… I spoke to you. You hacked my computer the night Light passed… You're the one who solved it. You made me promise to never tell my mother."
Beyond smirked as he took a long drag from his cigarette. "She didn't need to know. It would have broken her." He exhaled another large plume of smoke. "Lost her husband over the hubris of her only son? I sent the letter. I bought the train tickets to the remotest place Japan had to offer. I did it in case the media caught wind of Kira's true face. All from the safety of my cell in the United States."
"Did you know who Misa was? Before leaving with her?"
Trailing himself towards L's desk. "Not at first. It wasn't until she showed me the picture of her and Light." He put his cigarette out in L's tea. "But it had no bearing. It didn't matter to me who she was. I saw a woman on the edge of a bridge. At that point… does it ever matter?"
The detective rolled his eyes as Anne came into the room huffing, cheeks flushed with anger. "Marshall! Don't harass your brother! Come."
Sayu stomped her foot. "No! I came all this way to speak with him! He's the only one in this room I need to speak with! The rest of you are wasting my time. It's him. It's only about him!" She quickly pulled her cellphone out and powered it on. "And before anyone dies of gasps, I just need to show him something! You're obviously not doing it, L, so I will!" She opened the camera folder and opened a folder. She glanced up and shakily handed her phone to the renowned murderer. "Her paintings… it's only ever been about you…"
Sayu analyzed the slender man as he scrolled through her phone. 'How can this be the man who stole your heart? He's terrifying.' She watched his once hostile body movements seem to soften as he viewed each photo. 'Now I see… it wasn't him who stole your heart… you stole his…' Her eyes flicked towards the ravened detective before they returned towards Beyond. "Thank you." He handed her the cellphone back. "I am unable to leave the country. Nor am I permitted to even leave the grounds. If I was, there wouldn't be a force on this planet strong enough to keep me away." Her golden eyes watched a sullen man leave the room without another word.
Anne sighed and threw her hands up into the air while scoffing. "Marshall! You owe your brother an apology!"
"He can fuck off straight to hell! I hope he forgets and drinks the shit!" A loud door slam followed the angered shouts.
Sayu smirked towards L. "Seems we're at an impasse. I know you're investigating the disappearances of those children. What a discovery Lula would be…" The cellphone chimed. "Seriously? A voicemail and five missed calls? It's only been off for a little bit." She pulled he phone up to her ear and listened. As she listened her face filled with terror as tears threatened her eyes. "L..?"
The detective stared with interest as she set the phone on his desk and replayed the message on speaker.
The voice was of a terrified Misa. "Sayu? Oh god, I tried calling several times. I called the police, and they're on their way. But…" the voice hushed before panic filled the air once again. "Someone's here and they're tearing the place apart. I'm scared. Please, please get this." The voice hushed but crying could be heard before a scream, leaving the device abandoned on presumably the floor.
