GONDOLA

She's like a kid in a candy store, her first time in Las Vegas, and he almost, almost regrets bringing her along for this case as she rushes around the hotel again - an hour ago, it was the fountain in front of the Bellagio, now it is the gondolas at the Venetian. He could have been making lots of money by now, or losing it, either way, he imagined his night in one of the many casinos, not rushing around from one show to the next and looking at all the other extravagant experiences each hotel has to offer. The fact that they lost the case and Jessica cut their trip short to just one night is not helping his mood.

"Come," she pulls on his arm, clearly trying to get him in the waiting line. "This should be fun."

He eyes the line, at least twenty couples waiting in front of them, and he groans then.

"If you want to go on a gondola so damn bad, I'm taking you to Italy myself, but not this fake crap right here."

To her credit, her eyes only widen for a second, and her mouth snaps shut. She doesn't act hurt and doesn't comment either. She simply nods in agreement and hooks her arm around his, guiding him inside the casino at last.

He feels like an ass the second the words leave his lips, but she's pulling on his arm and directing him to the table, so he doesn't comment on it either apart from a soft "sorry" he mumbles as he places his chips on red.

She simply shrugs and tells him he at least should win big now, for he's taking her across the ocean.

Her comment draws a smile out of him, and he apologises again. She says it's fine, gets them both a drink and settles back down on the stool next to him as his lucky charm.

Years pass, and neither has thought about this interaction again, not until they're on their honeymoon in Paris and it isn't exactly close by, but they're closer than ever. So when he gifts her an envelope with a bow at dinner later that night, she looks at him curiously before she pulls out two plane tickets. He simply shrugs and says, "I promised I'd take you to Italy once."

Once they're there, she has the same excitement written all across her face as they walk along the canals. And when she asks him to take a gondola ride, he happily agrees.
