Somewhere In Between part 1

"I'm Diego, and you would be?" From the way his words extended, and his pupils dilated, I realized that he was attempting to compel me. Nice try.

"How am I supposed to be mysterious if you know my name?" I teased, amusement bubbled up inside me. The last thing I wanted to do was use my powers in a crowded bar. I just hoped Kol would be out soon.

"Can't be compelled, huh? You're a witch." He seemed very interested in my answer.

"I'm something." I answered vaguely. "Doesn't actually matter though, does it?" The bartender (Jane, I learned) came back with my drink and a bowl of something that smelled just as delicious as it looked. She kept her distance as she surveyed my interaction with the vampire.

"It doesn't matter at all, actually." He answered strangely as he got up. He stared as if he were taking a mental picture of me. He was definitely going on my creep list.

"Is everything ok?" Jane asked as I settled back into my seat and took in the smell of the jambalaya.

"I'm fine, I'm just waiting for someone." I answered then took my first bite instantly wondering why I couldn't just eat this all the time.

"They live here?" Jane continued.

"No, we're actually traveling together." I answered as I started to feel questioned. Something about her expression was alarming. I was beginning to feel like something weird was going on. First, the prodding vampire, now the nosy bartender. What did I walk into?

"Sounds like fun. Here let me take that from you-" She said as she reaches for my glass.

"No it's fi-" The sting from the shock hit me first, then the stream of emotion. Fear, worry, and pain. We both stared at each other, until a call from the other side of the bar broke our spell. It was only confirmation of who or what she was. She might be exactly what I came here for. She was a witch and even if she couldn't help me, she could probably point me in the right direction of someone who could. I discreetly followed her through the employee door of what must be the office. I found her pacing back and forth trying to decide something.

"Hey, sorry I'm if I scared you." I tried being polite, hoping to ease the tension. "It's some power I have that I haven't figured out how to control it."

She shook her head as she told me, "You can't be here. The vampires, they won't allow it."

"I'm not afraid of vampires and the one I'm not traveling with isn't either." I answered with confidence.

"Why are you here?" She asked concerned.

"I need help contacting an ancestor of mine."

"An Ancestor?" Now she was confused.

"Can you help me? She knows everything about me, I even have this ring and I don't know how I know, but I know it's hers." Her facial expression changed as if something went off in her brain. I couldn't explain it but she seemed a little more eager to help. I slowed down realizing that she may need some time to process everything.

"Okay, but we can't do it here. Meet me outside in the back in 5 minutes. "She was serious about these vampires. Why were they controlling the witches, and most importantly, how?

As she gathered what she needed, I walked out the back area to figure out what lie I was about to tell Kol. He already knew enough about me, so I had to figure out the best way to sneak away. When I emerged back into the crowd, I glanced around to see if I could spot Kol. Luckily I didn't find him, so carefully left for the side of the bar to an alleyway.

"What's that?" I quizzed the brunette as she carried a large duffel bag.

"Salt and other things we need to contact the dead." she replied confidently.

"And where exactly are we going?" I wondered as I followed Jane.

"The woods. I know a shortcut." We began to walk through the back alley behind the store front.

We traveled deep into the woods, probably the furthest I have ever walked. Jane and I made a circle with the salt and carefully placed the candles outside the salt. I lit the candles with my magic until I felt that familiar chill in the air. I felt the earth's power around swirl around my fingertips.

"Now cut your palm. We need blood to establish the connection." She instructed. Which was my least favorite part of any spell. I sliced into my hand and buried the pain deep hoping kol could just heal me later. As the blood fell to the ground and Jane started reciting the spell. The flames engulfed but I felt no different. I started to wonder what was happening. I didn't feel closer to Tatiana.

"Sorry." was all she said as I tried to force myself out of the circle. The spell kept me in the circle. Whatever she did it didn't keep people out, it kept me in.

Soon we were surrounded by what I assumed were other witches. I hoped they were witches. I could persuade them, maybe. Sadly, I had been wrong. Once I saw the guy Diego from the bar, I realized they were a band of vampires. Now I'm officially screwed. Once I could feel the spell come down, I felt a familiar feeling in the back of my neck. Pain. Then nothing.

When I woke up, I wasn't as sore as I should have been. I wasn't in pain at all. At the same time I wasn't being held captive by vampires either. I was on a beach with light pink sands and the clearest blue water. What the hell? I have I contacted her despite the witch turning me in to vampires.

"You called." I heard from behind me. When I turned to face the voice, she was there, and it wasn't less freaky then the first time. Her eyes were as green as Bonnie's and mine. It was still like I was looking into a mirror copy of myself.

"Hey. I'm really here." I was more than just a little freaked out.

"This is my afterlife. That ring you brought helped me bring you here it's our connection. But you are still in danger. The vampires still have you captive."

"Ok, well I'll just make this quick then. I don't have a grimoires, no way to explain to me how to use this magic or how it's supposed to work." I folded my arms into a safe stance. "I'm lost, I didn't know where to turn."

"You don't have to, as long as you that ring it will guide you. The rest is practice and knowing what you want to happen. There is no book on this and I wish I could be there to guide you. Your mother and I will be there the best way we can. When you feel danger or feel at your safest, we'll be there, right when you need us.

"Is she here now?" I asked hopeful to see my mother.

"No, not this time." She answered simply, looking apologetic. "But be warned about that ring, it reacts to your emotions. You won't be able to just side with your friends just because, but by what's right. You're going to realize that not all monsters have fangs."

'You don't have to tell me twice." I muttered. "There has to be more, something else to help."

"Never fully trust Klaus, he always has a backup plan. But he can't die, it will offset the balance. That cannot happen and kol is only loyal to those who are loyal to him. Protect yourself ".Is all said and I no

"Please explain why you gave a witch that powerful to the vampires" Sophie, Jane's sister, questioned as she placed in the crypt.

"To get them to lay off so I can do this spell without anyone knowing."

"What spell?" Sophie asked, confused.

"It's our ancestors. They gave me a sign and she's gonna save us." Sophie looked at her sister. She sounded insane but she had never been wrong.

As I woke up I automatically felt it. The headache and my sore neck. I was weak and dizzy but tried to gather myself. I wasn't in a dusty cellar or dark room but what seemed to be a large compound. It certainly wasn't built in this century. Also an M marked on every pillar. Hopefully, I was still in NOLA. I tried using magic to release me from the chains. I failed.

"That won't work, they're hexed." Of course I get kidnapped and had no idea how to deal with hexes. I focused more on the man I assumed to be a vampire. I stared at until I came to the conclusion I didn't know him. In all honesty, if he hadn't kidnapped me I probably would have flirted with him. Damn, why am I lying? I might still get his number. Why do all vampires look like heartthrobs? Shit, focus! He's obviously not a friendly.

"The name of my kidnapper would be nice." I asked. Looking up at the tall muscular man.

"Why would I tell you that?" He circled me like a vulture, making small precise steps.

"Because I'd like to the name of the man I'm going to rip apart when I get out."

"Marcel. What's yours?" He answered as if to challenge my threat. Getting

"Wait … I'm sorry." I say. "You kidnapped me and you don't know my name?" How rude.

"The truth is it's not you I'm after. It's the original you showed up with." Great, so I'm a pawn in Kol's mess.

"I have no idea what you're talking about ". I answered. I shifted myself seeing that being chained to a pole wasn't fun or comfortable. Snitches get stitches.

"I know he's here and I know he brought you here. "He used his vampire speed to get as close as possible gaining a gasp. "What I want to know is why?"

"Why are you so concerned?" I tried to sound as tough as possible.

"Why, because this is MY CITY that's why. The last thing I need are originals and their witches running around. "Is it bad that I'm just a little bit turned on? I need help. Literally and figuratively.

"I'm not one of their witches I only hitched a ride with him." his facial expression didn't change and I could tell he didn't believe anything I just said.

"Look, I don't actually know why he stopped here, but I pinky swear it has nothing to do with me. But I can't pinky swear with these chains around my wrist I said giving him a reason to release me.

He seemed to lighten up, but it was short lived as a head rolled between his and my feet. As rush of emotions cascaded through me that weren't mine. I immediately became a shield. Marcel used his vampire strength to hold me still with one hand and had the other hand ready to rip my throat out. Kol walked in with the same arrogance all the Mikaelsons seemed to possess as he walked into the room.

"Well it's as if I'm seeing a ghost." Kol said smiling, still showing his fangs. I could see that he didn't bother to wipe the vampire's blood off his face.

"One more step and she's dead."

"I see you have gotten yourself in a bit of a pickle, love." Kol asked as Marcel gripped me tighter. I mostly wanted to let me go so I could kick Kol's ass.

"Nope, this is your problem and I'm somehow in the middle of it. I swear if he-" I was unable to speak as Marcel was no longer holding back.

"I should kill her for the stunt you pulled!" Marcel shouted, not concealing any emotion. We noticed Kol didn't just kill the one vampire but more, over in the other room. Looking down at his fallen soldier, who seemed to be his friends. I felt every single one as I became further drained. The last thing I felt was anguish as I started to take my last breath. Kol knew what Marcel was going to be next and he didn't care. He was challenging him, deliberately risking my life. I was so killing him when I woke up.

As I took a breath, it was the most painful thing I had ever felt. Sadly now, I'm actually starting to get used to it. I realized that I was placed on a bed in some hotel. I could hardly process anything, as my body was still extremely sore. Every time I would shift my weight, my body crumbled in pain.

"I died. Again." Was all that rumbled out of my mouth as if I still didn't believe anything. All of this was hard and scary. Dying for the second time did it. This was serious and wondered how many times it would happen before I stay dead. "Why am I alive? I know you have the answers." I demanded from Kol as I saw him sitting on the next bed.

"And that's why you wanted to leave with me. Because you stole this." He spoke casually as he showed me the ring I thought I had lost while being kidnapped.

"It's strange, I have never seen it before but I felt like it belonged to me. And I want to know why." I said as I moved close to him.

"Soon pet. You will know everything." He placated. Which is what made me bring the "all powerful " Original to his knees not changing that provoking smile on his face bringing me to my decision to snap his neck. "Pet. Not In the slightest"

Getting kidnapped and killed and my fight for dominance with kol made me one thing. Hungry. I stepped over kol temporary lifeless body and grabbed my phone and left the hotel. My phone had been turned off but once I got a block or so I realized I had no idea where I was but I at least knew I wasn't in the French quarter anymore. As soon as my home screen came back on Carol's number popped up and the last thing I need her to be mad at me too.

"Evelyn! You didn't say you'd keeping your phone off. When do you plan on coming back, you're still an underage high school student. "

"Aunt Carol I'm fine. I just need a few more days."

"Young lady I want you back in school Friday morning. I don't care what's going on your education is still important."

"That's two days from now." I protested.

"Friday. And I don't want you and that Michaelson in the same room sleep together. "

"Omg we even like each other like that it solely business. "I answered feeling my still sore throat.

"I used to be a teenager I know how its happens. I don't want to but I will call your dad."

"Noooo, ok Friday morning in school. Got it. "The last thing I needed was my in the same state as me. New York is far enough.

"Good and keep your phone. Its bad enough Tyler is running around. Grey hair is not a good look for me". She "Expressed" to my dismay. We hung up and I checked my location and found myself and hour out of New Orleans. I found some local food and browsed through my messages. Everyone one's messages seems more about them needing my help. Bonnie's and Caroline's were apologetic. I did miss them but I need a little more time. The call ended and I proceeded to find my current location. Lafayette two hours out from NOLA and based on the time now I had to be out for four hours.

The information I had from the books I recently found were sketchy. Most of it was false but there were some truths. One pure iron burns me especially now that I have accepted my powers. I felt there was more, something Tatiana didn't get the chance to tell me. Kol knew what is was and he's going to tell me . As I turned off the residential block I noticed area of stores around the corner. This time I was going in a little more low key. I didn't to be kidnapped or worse.

I walked past a gas station then a seven eleven and thought about going there. That is until I saw diner and squeaked over the excitement for real food. I walked in and sat at the bar as the waitress waltzed over to me."Let me know when you ready sugar" in her deep southern accent handing me a menu. My eyes followed my fingers I contemplated the fries and a milkshake

Or maybe a burger. I ordered my food and patiently waited as my phone rang again. Bonnie. I hadn't thought about what I would say to her but something said pick up. As I heard my grams voice remaining me she's my cousin.

"Hello" I said clearing my voice.

"Hey, I sorry didn't know who to call and I really need to … talk" she said as her voice broke. She sounded frail.

"No hey talk to me what's wrong?" I answered with concern.

"You were right about everything, Not trusting Esther and ….. About abbey….she left again "I could hear her sadness with her mom leaving and couldn't help feeling me being overly critical of abbey pushed her to that decision.

"This is all my fault I shouldn't have acted like that"

"Actually she left because Damon turned her ...into a vampire."

"Shit, that had to be hard. "I answered as my food arrived. As hungry as I was the need to tell bonnie what was really going on. "Bon, I'm not just any witch. I'm a fairy. "I blurted and she hesitated.

"What does that even mean "she asked scared of her own question?

"It's a dominant trait- "I thought was the best way to explain it."-in our ancestry and the powers were given to me because I'm the doppelganger of the original. I am technically immortal"

"And you learned all this with kol?"

"No, he's not being very forthcoming ". Which was true it almost felt like I had to do something for him I order for him to give me any information.

(As Evelyn chatted on the phone kol snuck in the restaurant which she made easy since she hadn't realized he would wake up so quickly. He quickly made his rounds compelling everyone and stopping people from entering.)

"I'm still sorry I should have been there for you"

"I am too."

"I hang up the phone love" kol said with a demanding voice far worse than Klaus.

I would never admit it but that's exactly what I did "hey bon can I call you back". I hang up immediately before bonnie could say by. I gathered myself but kol didn't seem to be in a happy mood. Then I noticed the blood on his collar I could still smell the blood on his breath.

"Sup" I said with no confidence whatsoever and it did nothing but boost his ego.

"Well since I finally have your attention. I'm going to need you to come with me or multiple people will die". He said without any emotion.

"That's totally unnecessary. Where are we going I asked "trying to remain calm? He grinned getting his way.

"I will tell you on the plane." he answered as annoyingly grabbed my arm and left the diner.
