The thunderstorm continued, dumping buckets of water on the Whooves residence. It was dark inside the cottage, meaning everypony was asleep. Well, almost everyone. Dinky was having trouble sleeping, she was crying softly while she tossed and turned in her bed.
"No daddy... please don't go." Dinky cried. "Please daddy...don't..."
The thunder knocked Dinky out of her nightmare. But Dinky was still crying and tossing in her bed. The soft crying then turned into sobbing.
Derpy who happened to come in and check in her filly and found Dinky crying. Derpy rushed to Dinky's bedside and tried to wake her up.
"Dinky! Dinky, wake up!" She said shaking the filly with her two front hooves.
Dinky's eyes popped open. She was breathing hard. She couldn't stop crying.
"Dinky Doo, dear, what's wrong?" Derpy asked the young mare.
"I... I had a nightmare." Dinky said to her mother.
"It's about your dad, isn't it?" Derpy said. Dinky nodded at her mother's question. "Dinky, i told you your dad is stuck in a time vortex."
"I know it's just that I miss him so much." Dinky said.
Derpy whipped Dinky's tears with her her left hoof. She wrapped her hooves around her daughter and pulled her into a hug.
"I know. I miss him too." Derpy said.
Derpy released her daughter from the big and looked at her daughter.
"Now how about I sing you a lullaby that my mother used to sing to me." Derpy said.
Dinky nodded happily. Derpy got on the bed and took her daughter in her hooves and rocked her side to side like she used to do when Dinky was a foal.
Derpy started to sing the song that her mother used to sing for her years ago.
Stars and moons and air gallons,
fluffy clouds on the horizon.
I'll wrap you in rainbows and rock you to sleep again.
Teddy bears of pink,
ducks and lambs of white.
Don't you cry dear I'm here now,
I'll be your nightlight.
Dinky smiled at the sound of her mother's voice and yawned.
Stars and moons and air balloons,
fluffy clouds on the horizon.
I'll wrap you in rainbows and rock you to sleep again.
Derpy looked at her child and continued singing.
Smile to cure the frowns,
twirling and tumbling in laughter.
Someday life will always be,
happily ever after.
Derpy felt her daughter cling to her. Derpy ran a hoof threw her daughter's soft yellow mane as she continued on singing.
Never more will the storms come,
to destroy your little world.
Never more will the waters rise,
'til the mountains no longer touch the skies.
Dinky smiled at the sound of her mother's soothing voice. Her eyes started to close.
Stars and moons and air balloons,
fluffy clouds on the horizon.
I'll wrap you in rainbows and rock you to sleep again.
Even though Dinky tried not to doze off to sleep she sang the last verse of the song with her mother.
I'll wrap you in rainbows,
and rock you to sleep again.
Derpy looked at Dinky, who was starting to get tired. Derpy got off the bed and pulled the covers over Dinky.
"Goodnight, Dinky Doo." Derpy said.
Derpy kissed her filly good night and walked out of her daughter's room and went to her own room, she got into bed and turned her head over to her dresser and saw a picture of her husband, Dr. Whooves, herself and Dinky.
"Goodnight, Doc'. Wherever you are."
With that Derpy went to sleep, dreaming of her husband.
