Monday afternoon, all Drama Club members, plus honorary guests, were summoned to the auditorium for updates on the play. Jack couldn't say he was too thrilled about that. Recent developments aside, he still wouldn't consider himself an actor, and the prospect of pretending to be someone else in front the whole school didn't thrill him in the slightest.
"Good Afternoon, children!" Tooth greeted her beloved students, receiving not-as-equally-excited replies in return. "I was very pleased with your performances on Saturday and am happy to inform you that I have the perfect role for each of you at last!"
Tooth walked to the stage with a stack of papers in her arms and beckoned the students with a bright smile and wide hand gestures.
"These are the scripts, everyone take one copy, please," Tooth continued, handing the booklets to those nearby. As the scripts were passed around, she added, "Now, if you open it on the first page, you will find the cast list and your roles..."
Half-listening to what their teacher was saying, Jack grabbed one of the brochures and passed the rest to his friends. He flipped the book open and ran his eyes through the list. It didn't take long to find his and his friends' names on it.
He read:
Titania (Queen of the Fairies): Violet Parr
Oberon (King of the Fairies): Andrew Davis
Hermia: Elsa Arendelle
Lysander: Jackson Frost
Demetrius: Hiccup Haddock III
Helena: Astrid Hofferson
Puck: Dashiell Parr
"You have got to be kidding me," he heard Astrid mumbling under her breath.
"Okay." Jack waved the booklet. "Somebody run a Midsummer Night's Dream 101 by me real quick. Who's this Lysander person? He better be important."
"Lysander is one of the lead characters," Andy assured him as he ran his eyes through the script pages.
Jack pumped a fist in the air. "Awesome."
"He's also Hermia's love interest..."
"What was that?" Jack checked the roles list again.
According to Andy, he was going to play Elsa's boyfriend, and that couldn't be right, could it?
"Haven't you read the book?" Elsa asked with contempt. She quickly flipped through the pages on the script, eyes narrowing more and more as she advanced on the plot.
"Do I look like I read it?" Jack asked her with a brow arched.
Hiccup snorted. "Yeah, don't be silly, Elsa. Frost can't read books unless they have pictures in it."
"Shut up, nerd," Jack growled through gritted teeth.
Elsa sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Why am I still surprised?"
Jack smirked at her. "Because I can surpass your wildest expectations, and my awesomeness is undeniable."
Her eyes narrowed. "I was not complimenting you, Frost."
The silverhead shrugged. "So... Anyone wanna switch roles?"
"I'll do it," Astrid said, raising her hand.
"You're playing a girl, right?"
"Not only a girl," Violet explained with a mischievous smirk. "She's paired up with Hiccup."
"No way!" Jack's eyes opened wide at the new information.
Hiccup facepalmed, his face growing red.
"Like I'll just sit back and roll with it." Astrid got on her feet and stomped in the teacher's direction. "Hey, Ms. Tooth, can I have a word with you?"
Tooth beamed at the girl. "Yes, Astrid?"
"About the roles choices…" Astrid took a deep breath. "I don't think they are quite… right."
Jack nudged Violet, and the duo snickered together as they watched Astrid's struggles.
"Don't be silly, Astrid." Tooth put a hand on the girl's shoulder. "You're gonna be a great Helena. I have complete faith in you."
"Thanks," Astrid mumbled. "But you see, Ms. Tooth—"
"Oh, isn't this exciting? And look!" Tooth pushed an open booklet in Astrid's face. "You're gonna have Hiccup as your stage partner!"
"Awesome," Astrid said gritting her teeth and returned to her previous seat dragging her feet.
She shot a death glare at Hiccup, who looked puzzled at her in return.
"I blame you for this," Astrid snarled.
"Why?" Hiccup asked indignantly. "I had absolutely nothing to do with the casting."
Tooth continued explaining about their rehearsals three times a week, and about how she knew everyone was busy, and that she still hoped they could attend practice, and Jack had a feeling that she had exclaimed about that being the best play ever at least a thousand times.
"Okay, if Astrid is playing perky, adorable Hiccup's girlfriend, I can totally deal with Arendelle," Jack said in a low voice as the teacher's explanations continued.
Elsa rolled her eyes. "Always the charmer, Frost."
Jack winked. "You know it, beautiful."
"Alright, everyone!" Tooth clapped twice to get everyone's attention. "Let's read the script together once, shall we?"
"You know, it could be worse," Elsa said as she and her friends left rehearsal later that day.
"How?" Astrid asked.
Elsa shrugged. "I don't know, I'm just trying to keep a positive mindset."
"How's that working for you?" Andy asked with a chuckle.
"Not well," Elsa mumbled.
Andy threw an arm around the blonde's shoulders. "Hang in there."
Jack moved to the front of the group and walked backward so he could face the rest of the teens. "Well, as much as I would love to stay and strengthen our bonds of friendship and all that cheesy crap, Hiccup and I have places to go."
"How ominous," Elsa said with an arched eyebrow.
Jack folded his hands behind his head. "What's a boy without his secrets?"
"Trustworthy?" the platinum-blonde suggested.
"And where's the fun in that?" Jack scoffed.
Elsa rolled her eyes. "You're an idiot."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," the silverhead said with an exaggerated bow.
Hiccup cleared his throat. "Anyway, we have some stuff to do, so... see you at dinner?"
"Sure." Andy nodded.
Elsa sighed and threw a stern look at each of the boys. "Please, try not to do anything that would make Astrid want to kill you more than usual."
"Can't make you any promises, Your Majesty." Jack winked at her. "Astrid's murderous desires are as natural as the sun rising and setting every day, or as natural as your enviable beauty, Arendelle."
Elsa rolled her eyes. "Charming."
"Glad to be of service," Jack said, bowing elegantly.
"Alright, keep walking, Frost," Hiccup said as she pushed the silverhead forward. "Later, guys."
The pair disappeared after a corner, and the group continued walking down the hallway.
"Now, shall we try to get some work done?" Elsa asked.
Andy sighed. "Back to the grind we go."
"Sucks to be you three," Violet mumbled.
"And you?" Astrid asked.
"What about me?"
"Are you coming back with us?"
"Fuck no," Violet scoffed. "I think I'll wander around for a while."
"Do we need to worry about you causing trouble as well?" Elsa asked with concern.
"Worry not, Elsa. I will be a real angel."
"More like a fallen angel," Astrid mumbled.
Violet glared at her. "What was that?"
Astrid shrugged. "Nothing."
"Well, good luck with your duties, ladies and gentleman." Violet gave the Student Council trio a two-fingers salute. "Our paths part here."
"Please behave," Elsa said before the brunette could go far.
"You know I will!"
At night, just a couple of hours before lights out time, Astrid lied on her back, her head hanging off the edge of the bed and her arms stretched in front of her as she read the play's script.
"Oh, Hermia! I'm jealous of your beauty and your pure soul. I would do anything to be like you and have men crawling on the floor for me!" the girl freestyled and groaned, putting the booklet away. "Oh, Helena... What a resentful bitch."
"And you, lovely lady, are gonna bring her to life," Violet laughed, looking at the blonde from over her shoulder.
"Oh, joy," Astrid grumbled.
"At least you're not stuck pretending to be in love with Frost," Elsa reasoned.
"One sells her best friend for a guy that ignored her her entire life, the other abandons her whole life for a cocky bastard." Astrid rolled over on the bed and lied on her stomach. "Seriously, what is wrong with these women?"
"You're missing the point, Hofferson." Violet rolled her eyes. "They did it out of love. The story is about the misfortunes of two couples who are meant to be together, but are too stubborn to see it, and also about some fairies fucking up with magic."
"Somebody is deeply engrossed in their reading," Elsa commented with an arched eyebrow.
Violet shrugged. "Shakespeare is fun. Sexist, sure, but that was a consequence of his time period."
"Wow." Astrid stared at the brunette dumbstruck. "You are taking the play a lot more seriously than I expected."
"Well, I want the play to succeed."
"How altruistic of you," Elsa said.
"You know me, El. Always thinking of others."
"More like always meddling in others' life," Astrid grumbled.
"You see it as meddling, I see it as ensuring my friends' happiness."
"My happiness is not up to your manipulation, Violet."
"It should be, because you're the queen of the self-sabotage game."
Astrid frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Violet let out a contemptuous snort. "What do you think it's supposed to mean?"
"Isn't it too late for you two to start arguing?" Elsa asked with apprehension.
"You're right. You figure it out on your own," Violet said glaring at Astrid, then she looked at Elsa. "See? Composure."
Elsa sighed, leaning back against the bed frame. "Proud of you, Vi. Good job."
"You're starting to get on my nerves," Astrid hissed through gritted teeth.
"And what's new with that?" Violet laughed mockingly.
Elsa laughed as well. "Come on, ladies. We're supposed to be learning our lines."
"Say that to Miss Life Is So Unfair, My Character Is A Bitch over there," Violet said, gesturing at Astrid with her head.
Astrid sat up, crossing her arms. "Oh, so you're gonna throw it at me now?"
"Violet, I just complimented your newly acquired maturity." Elsa sighed, pressing her fingers to her eyelids. "Couldn't you just smile and go back to your reading?"
Violet's eyes narrowed, and it seemed like she was about to argue, but then she closed her mouth and threw a big, bright smile at the platinum-blonde girl and hid her face behind her script. Watching that, Astrid too switched her attention to the bundle of papers in her hands, grumbling incoherently to herself as she angrily flipped through the pages, occasionally throwing annoyed glares in the brunette's direction.
Elsa sighed, reaching out for her own script.
"Two steps forward, one step back."
"I hate Old English," Jack groaned, tossing his scrip on the floor and rolling on his back to stare at the ceiling.
"That so?" Hiccup asked with half-interested. He had his back to the silverhead as he sat on his desk working on his homework.
"It's so complicated and over-embellished. Like, get to the point already." Jack snorted.
"Hmm... True."
Jack's eyes narrowed. "And one time, I was skating on a frozen lake, the ice broke, and I fell. I drowned, and the moon brought me back to life," Jack said, glowering at his friend.
"That's nice."
Jack grabbed one of his pillows and threw it at the auburn-haired guy. It hit the back of Hiccup's head, and the latter let out a shout of pain.
Hiccup turned to glower at the other guy. "What was that for?"
"Oh, that caught your attention, didn't it?" Jack asked innocently.
Hiccup rolled his eyes before returning to his homework. "I'm busy, Frost."
"With what?"
"Something called homework." Hiccup looked at the other guy from over his shoulder. "Maybe you've heard of it."
"Yeah, maybe." Jack shrugged. "Isn't that a contraption created to drain us of our youth?"
Hiccup threw his head back and laughed. "Dramatic much?"
Jack laughed as well. "Come on, you're one of the smartest kids in our year. I'm sure your school records will be fine even if you miss a deadline or two."
"You know, it has some real impact when the person who can count with one hand the times they turned in their homework says those words."
"Did I convince you to join me for a round of Mario Kart?"
"No." Hiccup shrugged. "But nice try."
Jack groaned, letting his head fall against the mattress. "Ugh. You're such a nerd."
"Thank you, Jack. Keep trying to find more inventive ways of mocking me." Hiccup sighed. "Aren't you busy anyway? How's the reading going?"
The silverhead groaned, covering his face with his arms. "Horribly. Which is why I suggested a break."
"Andy said you needed to finish Act One until he came back from the bathroom."
"Andy can suck my dick—"
Jack stopped talking as the door opened and Andy walked inside on his PJs and with a damp towel slung around his neck.
"What heartwarming greetings, boys," Andy said dryly as he proceeded with his nightly routine.
"Uh..." Jack looked at his auburn-haired friend for help, but the latter simply shook his head negatively.
"Did you finish reading the script?" Andy asked.
The silverhead closed his eyes. "Brain melting. Can't comprehend words anymore."
Andy walked to Jack's bed and picked up the latter's script and checked the page it was open on. "Come on, Jack. You only got ten pages left."
"Ten pages!"
"Keep it quiet out there! Some of us are trying to study!" Hiccup shouted from his desk.
"Traitor," Jack scoffed under his breath before pouting and looking up at Andy with begging eyes. "Can I have a fifteen minutes break? Pleease?"
Andy's eyes were hard for a moment, then he caved and shook his head. "Fifteen minutes. And you're finishing those ten pages even if I have to tie you to your desk for it."
"Thanks, Dad!" Jack excitedly jumped to his feet and dashed to the game console in the corner of the room. "Join me, will you, boys?"
Andy sighed. "Fifteen minutes, Frost."
"Yeah, yeah." Jack waved the other guy off with brusque hand gestures. "Third?"
"I suppose a quick break wouldn't hurt," Hiccup reasoned, pushing his chair back.
Jack glared at the auburn-haired guy as the latter approached the other two. "You know, you're a two-faced bitch."
Hiccup shrugged. "It takes one to know one."
"And you still have the balls to call me the jerk."
"What can I say? I learned from the best."
"Tic-tac, people," Andy said, handing Hiccup a spare controller. "I thought you two wanted to play games."
Hiccup looked at the other guy with an arched eyebrow. "Is that a challenge, Davis?"
Andy shrugged nonchalantly. "If you're up for it."
The silverhead laughed throwing his head back. "Oh, Andrew..."
"You just asked to have your ass kicked."
